Week 11 Recs: He's a Magic Man

The Week 11 theme was "He's a Magic Man," or recs featuring the mystical, the magical, the fantastical, and a lot of werewolves, apparently! (If you missed your chance, monsterhuggers, don't worry: we'll have a monster-centric theme when spooky season rolls around!)

What Lies Undone by AsheRhyder [8,117 words]

There are rules to this sort of thing. Not the common sort, made to be broken and bent and outright ignored, but the old kind, made for dealing with dangerous things.

And they are all dangerous things, in Overwatch.

McCree survives by knowing which rules to break and which to obey and when to do the opposite of what he usually does. Dangerous things stay dangerous because they can change - he knows this all too well.

A small cowboy in a large hat wandered out of the mist one day, and asked a lonely young dragon to be his friend. Such requests hold great weight out on the edge of reality, where the dragon kept his cave. The dragon and the little boy shared secrets and adventures.

(Hanzo is pretty sure McCree can kill anything and both of them are trying not to be quite so in love with someone who can and probably will, kill them. Dragon and Monster Hunter AU)

Years ago, Cole retired as the Defense Against Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts to raise a little girl. Now, she's old enough to get accepted, but she dislikes the professor who took his place, and he has to intervene.

Hanzo has heard so many stories about the the man, the myth - nay, the legend - whose post he took at Hogwarts, yet not in a single one of them did anyone say anything about how attractive the Deadeye Cowboy is. But even if the man's daughter didn't hate him for no apparent reason, Hanzo can't afford to fall for someone who would kill him on the spot if he ever found out Hanzo's true nature. So of course, he falls head over heels.

His instructions were deceptively simple: visit the planet Hanamura and bring back two of the sons of the famous Shimada Clan.

McCree, captain of the Santa Fe and an independent contractor that worked with the Overwatch space station, should have known better than to think that anything about this would go according to plan.

Any hunter worth his salt knows that you should take all possible precautions to avoid messing with the Fair Folk. Most of the Fair Folk, however, don't really give a rats ass what precautions are taken and delight in messing with anything unlucky enough to get within arms reach.

Or: Hanzo is in way over his head and Jesse is loving it.

Jesse's got a pretty good job as the librarian in a magical library. He spends his days cataloguing, tracking down rare titles, fixing up the occasional spell gone awry, and dealing with the smoke monster in the basement.

Then Hanzo Shimada, Demon Hunter, shows up to turn his world upside down.

Once a year, magician Hanzo must perform a ritual to bind the dragon spirits to himself. This year, something about the ritual doesn't quite go right, and he summons a trickster along with the dragons. Now he's stuck with the stowaway until he can figure out how to dismiss him. Luckily Cassidy seems mostly benign, if irritating and predisposed to dressing as a cowboy.

Hanzo Shimada is an expatriate student of the Fine Arts, attending college in what he assumes to be a reasonably sedate corner of the American southwest. Jesse McCree is an occasionally leather-clad NPS ranger whose duties extend somewhat further than shooing lost tourists back onto the clearly marked hiking trails. Something weird is going on in the desert south of Santa Fe and their lives unexpectedly come together in the middle of it.

Hanzo has spent years of his life a captive werewolf, fighting in underground dogfights for a master that values his ability to kill and nothing else. One night he's stolen from the back of a transport van and wakes somewhere new.

Hanzo, an author who is struggling with his murder mystery draft, decides to move across the United States, trading the bustling city for quiet mountain life for inspiration.

Little does he know that he lands right in the middle of a real-life murder mystery and is suspect number one.

Fortune-telling was just supposed to be a way to make some money for Genji's business. It was easy enough with the dragons whispering secrets in his ears, and the outfit certainly helped bring in customers. But it was a skeptic named Jesse McCree who turned everything on it's head.

Jesse closes his eyes and he is not at home anymore.

He is not alone.

Jesse is in a large, open room with a high ceiling full of exposed wooden beams and what looks like straw mats spread out on the floor. Some of the walls are solid, others are made of paper. Words come to Jesse to unbidden like memories that aren’t his own. Dojo. Tatami. Shoji. The characters on the pillars are kanji.

Jesse is in Japan. Parts of him, anyway.

There are people lingering along the edges of the room. There are two figures in the center, one of them older with his eyes flashing eerie red, black hair greying at his temples. In front of him is a boy about Jesse’s age— seventeen. Eighteen, maybe. He’s kneeling with his eyes downcast, long hair pulled up into a messy bun, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. His clothes are hanging down off his left shoulder to expose an intricate tattoo, dragons and storm clouds and lightning in blue and grey and gold.

He’s beautiful like nothing Jesse has ever seen, a tangle of contradictions. He looks delicate.

He looks powerful.

He’s breathtaking and he’s afraid and oh, fuck.

He’s Jesse’s.

The table seems endless stretched between them; polished wood, incense filling the room with smoke, ceremonial cups of sake. Jesse stares across the length of it, his gaze locked on Hanzo with an intensity usually reserved for the hunt, except he’s never been interested in any prey the way he is now; voraciously.

Savagely.

Teeth curve long out of his jaw, and his body rolls into the half-shift all on its own. Ears pricked, tail sprouting from the base of his spine, eyes lit up red. Hanzo is doing no better.

His eyes are black, pupils blown wide, nothing but a thin ring of gold set in an impossibly dark sclera. Jesse watches Hanzo’s horns lengthen, watches his claws extend. Watches his cheeks turn red, even more pronounced against the blue of his skin.

Everything goes sideways, as Jesse always expected it would.

It just doesn’t go sideways the way he expected.

Jesse had been ready for a fight.

Cassidy takes a new monster hunting contract. It's pretty decent as contracts go: the pay is good, the perks even better, and he's got two competent companions to fight at his side when the monsters come.

Then a third companion arrives and ruins everything.

Watcher in the Woods by Kalikuks [84,072 words] Reccer 1 comment: "Kali does a lot of monster and magic/fantasy fics, but if I can only choose one, this is it"

Reccer 2 comment: ""Watcher in the Woods" by Kalikuks 🥰 (explicit, old name for Cass) Blind Hanzo and eldrich being Cassidy. Buckle up cause is a long one with sequels!❤️"

Hanzo gets the uncanny feeling that he’s being towered over and instinctually tips his head up, even if he sees nothing.

“You can’t see me,” a deep honeyed voice rumbles from above, a good few feet above, Hanzo guesses.

“I—“

Hanzo’s reply is drowned out when the hunting party crashes through the foliage behind him and the screaming begins.

AU Where Hanzo is Blind and Jesse is an eldritch being of sorts that drives men mad when they look upon him. They fall in love.

Current Projects

For those who may be interested, here's a mostly complete current status of my fanfic works in progress.

Assassin's Creed

The 11th part of Bleeding Memories has been completed as of January 27th, 2024!

Dragon Age

Tentative planning stages for rewriting The Sordid Tale of Meryell Verlen. This rewrite would allow for better planning of ideas that came in later chapters and also would potentially combine the main Sordid story with the Sordid Fragments.

Vampyr

Chapter 7 of Dear Hunter is started but needs to be completed.

Untitled Mary centric fic has been begun and is currently at 2,771 words.

Fifth part for Love Struck Fools series is started but may be one of two currently in progress stories (one smut, one not smut).

The second half of the Two Dragons series has 4 chapters completed and 5th is in progress.

Marvel

Started the tentatively titled The Soldier's Fox, a Bucky/OC fic that is currently 14 chapters completed. The 15th is in progress. Now in the process of being entirely rewritten.

Star Wars

Untitled story started, 7 chapters complete with 8th in progress. Eventually a Mando/OC fic with lots of other OCs and old EU content. Starts post-Mando S2, may or may not broach BoBF and Mando S3 content.

Warcrack

Five in-progress stories: a backstory filler for the high/blood/void elf crew (aka everyone's trauma from the fall of Silvermoon), a continuation of the plotline started in Blackmail, a side continuation from the Far From Home plotline, and two new stories concerning the relationship between two characters.

Overwatch

May or may not publish idk. Got a bug for a Hanzo focused story (I love a grumpy dragon man riddled with guilt) where he befriends Hana, hangs out with his brother, makes peace with Angela, and generally just adapts to being a person in the watchpoint.

Burning Bright [Hanzo-Centric, Slight Hanzo/Reader]

I felt like that there was no need for conversation

Some questions are better left unreasoned

Callused hands gripped the expensive sake vessel, lifting it in a well-practiced movement, pouring a thin stream of the clear liquid into a matching sake cup. There was perhaps no need for the whole bottle. Yet.

For now, he could still pretend to have a sense of control and moderation.

And I would rather reveal myself than my situation

Now and then I consider my hesitation

Cup to his lips, Hanzo downed the alcohol in one swift movement, his hands automatically moving in perfect motion to perform yet another pour.

The more the light shines through me

I pretend to close my eyes

Yare, yare how did he end up here. He’s been through this a million times, ran through all the scenarios, the choices and decisions. Drank more than his lifetime’s share of sake. Cheap. Expensive. Rare. Common. Watered down. He must have tasted them all in his quest to forget. Or perhaps to remember.

The more the dark consumes me

I pretend I’m burning bright

He was here now. Far away from Hanamura, years apart from the scene that haunted his memories. Sitting, no less, in the base of an organization that was once highly venerated only to fall from grace. Fate’s irony? Perhaps, but Overwatch was rising again. Did it mean he would rise with it? No. He did not have ties with it, save for one frayed thread.

I wonder if the things I did were just to be different

To spare myself of the constant shame of my existence

This Genji had seemed happy to see him when Hanzo had first stepped into the base. But the archer would never forget. He had crossed paths with his brother once before, back when he was still in Blackwatch. Till the day his last breath leaves his body and his soul was judged by whichever power saw fit, Hanzo could never forget how those crimson eyes burned with hatred. He would never know how they did not come to blows that day. Or whether he would have cast his bow aside and let his brother have his revenge, as was his right. Those eyes, now hidden behind a helmet, may still hold the very same look.

Hanzo was told Genji’s eyes was now back to his original brown.

I would surely redeem myself in desperation

Here and now I express my situation

He could never stand to be near Genji now. Every single time his brother came close, start a conversation, glanced his way… he could not… he could not help but analyse over and over again every single action, every single word, every single second of silence. What was he thinking? What were his motives? What were his feelings?

Hanzo wanted to rip that fucking helmet off

...Did he still look the same?

There’s nothing ever wrong, but nothing’s ever right

Such a cruel contradiction

They knew. The whole of Overwatch knew the history between the both of them. At least, the basics of it. The most damned important part of it. And they still smiled at him. Still tried to talk to him. Still tried to become friends with him.

Still… fell in love with him.

I know I crossed the line, it’s not easy to define

I born to indecision

He pushed, and pushed and pushed. And they pulled right back. Wrapped him in their arms. They knew didn’t they? He had snapped and asked. Yes. But you were not who you were. Who he was? He threw back his head and laughed, a sound filled with such bitterness and pain. Who he was, was a born and bred assassin, his weapons sharpened with his heart till there was not a shred of it left. A merciless monster they wanted, and a merciless monster they got. It wasn’t enough, it was never enough. And he, was never enough.

And yet they all looked at him with kind eyes.

There’s always something new

Some path I’m supposed to choose

With no particular rhyme or reason

The monk, his brother’s teacher was perhaps the worst of all. You are free to make your choices, hummed the omnic. Choices? The blade embedded dangerously close to the monk’s head.

Calm as can be the monk said

Genji did that too.

The more the light shines through me

I pretend to close my eyes

A roar of rage ripped through his throat as he flung the cup against the far wall, followed closely by the vessel. He surged up and slammed his fist against the nearest wall, once, twice and again, his mouth opened in a wordless yell.

The more the dark consumes me

I pretend I’m burning bright

The dragon stirred in his anger, the room began to be illuminated in the blue fury of a man so lost.

I pretend…

Hanzo didn’t hear the door slam open as you rushed into the room and took in the scene before you. He didn’t see the expression on your face nor see you cross the room to him. He only felt your arms wrap around him and his body stiffen. He only felt his body turn around and bury his face into your neck as he cried uncontrollably and your hand moved gently and soothingly up and down his back.

Why do you love me?

Why do you accept me?

Why did Genji forgive me?

Why… am I here?

Those were the words he wanted to utter but remained unspoken.

I feel like there’s no need for conversation.

A/N - Song Lyrics from : Burning Bright (Sanford Mix) by Shinedown (if you want to listen to it while reading!). So this was a fic/drabble that I've wanted to write for a long while now and have rewritten it several times till I'm somewhat satisfied with it, though I may drop a few edits in the future. You might have noticed that it shares the same name as my blog, which is partially because the song means a lot to me (it has helped me through the times I've felt conflicted), and partially because I felt the song, too, fits Hanzo's struggle. Rein

a song that reminds me of them - Danny Schmidt's Esmee By the River has immense Rein energy to me; gentle and a little bit mournful and nostalgic, but still positive and hopeful at the core - and to me it sounds like a song from a fairytale, very much his energy

what they smell like - just like ... man. I think he'd be the type to utterly despise smelling like something artificial. He buys tubs of the most neutral deodorant he can find and uses that. He's a pretty active person so he often smells a little bit sweaty under it, but it's more 'this is a person returning from a run' and less 'this guy hasn't showered in weeks' if you catch my drift

an otp - Reaper/Rein my absolute fucking beloved I love this ship and it seems I am the only one (Rein/Soldier/Reaper is also - as the kids say - very good)

a notp - I don't really like Ana/Rein as a romantic pairing all that much, but I'm not squeaked out by it so wouldn't call it a notp. There are definitely worse characters to ship him with, you just thankfully don't see those

favorite platonic/familial relationships - Brig, of course. Their dynamic is so charming and sweet. Rein and Torbs relationship is also really lovely and I like to imagine Rein gets along with Ingrid great as well! In general, the 'OG overwatch gang found family' is lovely and I love all parts of it

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with - He isn't dumb at all, or at least not in the way some people portray him to be. I like to think that he's easy-going and loud and joyful on purpose but a very attentive and - especially emotionally - intelligent person. Also! I HC that most of his friends nickname him ‘Will’ rather than ‘Rein’ in day to day conversation

the position they sleep in - boy sprawls like his life depends on it and will throw every cover off him in his sleep. He's known to even push pillows off the bed while sleeping to claim the entire thing for himself

a crossover au i’d love to see them in - put Rein in a cheesy christmas movie right this second I dare you

my favorite outfit they’ve ever worn - I'm weirdly attached to Lieutenant Wilhelm; the white and blue overwatch skin. It's simple and kind of plain but something about it just looks right to my eye idk

Hanzo

a song that reminds me of them - the first one that came to mind was actually Jason Isbell’s New South Wales. It’s not really really a present day Hanzo mood, but I like the idea of him having a nice quiet day; introspective and hopeful - at last. It’s less of a vibe and more of a song I’d love to write a Hanzo centric fic based on some day but oh well

what they smell like - similar to Rein I think he'd just smell clean. No products with a strong scent

an otp - Bapzo is spicy as heck and I am not immune to imagining Reaper and Hanzo bumping into each other in a bar and hanging for a while, though that last one isn't romantic as much as 'I could see it happen as a weird little fling/hook-up and that idea is intriguing to me'

a notp - as mentioned, McHanzo is at this point about this 👌🏽 close to being a notp I am so tired of it and how it's treated in fandom

favorite platonic/familial relationships - Him and Genji obviously, and almost even more him and Zen talking things through is interesting and tender and complicated and I would like to see it

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with - I don't know how to say this without sounding mean, but I'm pretty uncomfortable with the brand of 'sad and pathetic' much of the fandom projects onto him. I think I write him as a character that's more self-aware and a lot softer, but also with more dignity and justified pride than some people give him. Basically, I want him to be sillier and softer and with a lot more (yes, kind of stiff, but still) self-irony and I don't like when he gets boiled down to 'self-important but kind of pathetic'

the position they sleep in - back to a wall or he straight up will not fall asleep. A big pillow or a person might work in a pinch but a wall is definitely preferable

a crossover au i’d love to see them in - old school LotR AU with Hanzo as an elf of some sort sounds spicy to me
