well this just might be my most ambitious ask in a while :) shout out to the 1.5 francophones who may or may not follow this blog. And also for those 1.5 francos...

I already expect this piece to get less engagement because it's (mostly) not in English, and I'm afraid I'm still going to be more annoying and not provide a translation. As previously I will lean into making a statement Windex-style by purposefully not translating what I've written above into English just because the point of celebrating Franco-Albertan heritage month is, well, acknowledging the unique status of French in this country and how there is an expectation to conform to English in this province that needs a little challenging. I hope if nothing else, it strikes your curiosity enough to painstakingly type it into google translate so you can get half of the banter.

Another question that languished at the bottom of the box for over a year! This was because I felt I should make a real effort to write in French, of course, but also because I struggled with the wording of the question and ultimately didn't answer it. The "most" or the "best" are very loaded terms, so I avoided answering them entirely particularly because we have several languages that risk losing native speakers and because there's a lot of bs wrapped up in what "good" french is that I'm not skilled enough to unpack (though you can read what Windex wrote on this matter earlier on this blog... And here as well).

I have to strike a balance between representing the gang here as individuals (and immortals to boot) who have a lot of time on their hands and some interest and investment in learning languages on one hand... but also as representations of "average" people on the other. Francophone travellers aren't going to find many French speakers outside of airports, national parks, or government services in this province, but it still might surprise you considering all the "everyone outside of Quebec hates French" rhetoric that politicians like to fling around. It's more complicated than that, obviously, but I can mostly talk about my own personal experience with French here. I tried to represent both the reality that Franco-Alberta exists (represented by Ed) and the stereotypical resistance to French here (represented by Calvin, though clearly he understands enough to respond here. I also just think he tries to play dumb on purpose so that others underestimate him, it's all part of the image!)

Finally, I don't speak any of the languages (Michif, Tagalog, Punjabi, Cree) represented here so I hope they pass muster for the purpose of this little comic! ;~;b I have also represented Calvin speaking Mandarin previously on this blog!

Note: The characters presented there are inspired by @allbeendonebefore's work and has no intention to mock you, rather to entertain you. Without further ado, let's move on.

In case you don't know, I love drawing and making headcanons about the personifications of modern greek cities and towns for various reasons, mainly because I want to promote the modern image of my country, as opposed to the ancient one that most foreigners are familiar with.

This time, I made 10 personifications, the two of them representing a regional unit (I will explain later why it's two and not one) and the rest representing some towns of that regional unit.

The regional unit, in question, is:

So, why Aetolia-Acarnania of all regions? Well, partly because my mom is from there and because almost nobody on the internet talks about it, so I wanted to make it more well-known.

I tried to seach some information online and I couldn't find much, other than that the Ancient Greeks considered these people barbarians, because they were war-like and didn't produce works of art.

Anyways…

Artistic choices: Aetolia and Acarnania's appearances were based from my uncles'. Specifically, Acarnania looks exactly like the one I based him from. Aetolia not do much, except from the face. None of my uncles have shoulder-length hair, I just added it to give him a more savage look based on the idea that the Ancient Greeks had about these people (which still exists today, but we will discuss it later). It was kinda difficult, because I'm not used on drawing male characters and even when I do, I give them a "cute-boy" look, so it was challenging but nice to draw something different for once. Also, regarding the choice of the color. I thought of all the colours that Hapo used in her @athensandspartaadventures: green, red, lots of purple and a little bit of brown. I wanted to choose a colour that she hasn't utilised and the first one to come to my mind was mustard yellow. Sooner or later, I will come up with an actual good explanation (or I might use a different colour).

Honestly, the trip there feels like visiting South France, since it's full of green. A small tip for all the foreigners who are in Greece right now, but they wish they were in South France: just visit Aetolia-Acarnania! It's the same thing! But better! 🙃

The Ancient Fortification of Kastri.

An ancient site I wish more people would visit. Mainly because I love the way we get there. Basically, you climb a mountain. All alone. Without a special equipment. But that's the fun of the ride! 😃

This unexpected and surprising evening reimagines a 1960s-style happening for today, complete with elements of painting, spoken word, music, movement, wonder, and more.

With musical direction by Vernon Reid (@vurnt22), the evening centers around a set of concerts by Reid and Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber (@burntsugararkestra) inspired by the greats of the Black Arts Movement and honoring the musical legacy of the late writer and intellectual Greg Tate. Before and after seated performance times, audiences are invited to engage with screenings of Stefanie Batten Bland’s (@sbb_land) film “Kolonial,” as well as other activations and installations featuring Shantelle Courvoisier Jackson (@stvoisier), Nona Hendryx (@nonahendryx), Somi (@somimusic), Wunmi (@wunmi_olaiyaofficial), Carrie Mae Weems (@carriemaeweems), Dianne Smith (@iamdiannesmithart), and other surprise guests.

Inspired, imagined, and curated by Harlem Stage Associate Artistic Director/Artist-in-Residence, @carlhancockrux, the Black Arts Movement: Then and Now Conference is a three-day event featuring a keynote address by poet, music critic, and arts administrator A.B. Spellman. The conference includes panels, discussions, essays, and performances, featuring pioneers and visionary artists including Angela Y. Classicstober: 10. Asklepios

(It's totally fine and normal to show up over a week late to a challenge)

I really wanted to do this challenge, but my attention has been so scattered by work and family lately that I tried to think of a low commitment version that would teach me something and still brighten up my sketchbook a little. I was thinking about how I used to get a lot of doodles in during art history and archaeology classes back in the day, so I'm trying to return to that with some dollar store pen and highlighter. :) I'm not sure if the entire series will look like this or if I'll just use whatever I have on hand, we will see.

I recently finished s1 of Enterprise for the first time and I'm really enjoying it. I think one thing that sold me was 1x04 ("Strange New World") where they need a group photo for their first away mission and they've all got their matching hats, ha. Here's a quick doodle of that scene.

World Watercolour Month: 9. Vegetation

for some reason my first thought with this prompt was a little screencap redraw of that scene in The Man Trap where Rand and Sulu have to calm their suspiciously hand-shaped plant after an Incident. Out of context it looks like Rand is weirded out by Sulu's petting but she's an equally invested plant parent haha.

I knew it was going to snow today so I made myself climb Mount Tolmie to get this view of Mount Baker to sketch yesterday. The lighting changed a lot in the short time I was up there and my fingers kept freezing up (it was about -2 and I forgot gloves) so I took frequent breaks to warm up my hands. I did try to go back with white pen, but it didn't really work out and I may need a replacement. Overall, I'm still happy with it.
