peter pan and tinker bell, which way to never never land?
emerald city's gone to hell
since the wizard blew off his command
on the streets you hear the voices
lost children, crocodiles
you're not into
making choices, wicked witches
poppy fields or men behind the curtain
tiger lilies, ruby slippers
clock is ticking that's for certain

To bounce off the previous anon's ask, what is your favorite literary genre? Have you read/re-read any good books recently? What is a book (fiction and/or non-fiction) you feel everyone should read?
I am currently reading The Light Ages by Ian Macleod, which I swear up and down that I read as a teenager and spent a long time trying to find again, but which I don't actually remember at all. I'm pretty sure that this was one of the books which first got me into social-commentary steampunk as a genre, so yes. The books next on the list are The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah, The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova, and Perdido Street Station by China Miéville.
Books that I have on pre-order and are both scheduled to be released in August include Husband Material by Alexis Hall (sequel to Boyfriend Material which is one of my favorite books, a gay fake-dating romcom that always makes me laugh my ass off), and Babel: Or The Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by R.F. Kuang (author of the Poppy War trilogy), which could not possibly be more up my alley if they had designed it in a lab. It is set in a magical 19th-century Oxford and incorporates aspects of The Secret History by Donna Tarrt and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, both of which are also some of my favorite books, while featuring a Chinese protagonist and exploring racism, linguistic and cultural imperialism, and why the British Empire sucks. It comes out on August 23, which is the day before my birthday, so yes, happy birthday to me.
As you can probably tell, therefore, my favorite genre is well-written literary fiction, feminist, queer, racially and culturally diverse fantasy and sci-fi, space operas and sprawling speculative-fiction sagas, historical fantasy (especially written by women of color, since I almost never read straight white male fantasy authors for, uh, many reasons) and reimagined classics. I will try almost anything if it looks interesting and/or funny (one of the quickest ways to make me lose interest is for a book to have no sense of humor at all and/or take itself way too seriously), but I have too much stuff on my list to stay with it if it doesn't grab me.
A few books not already mentioned that I think more people should read, whether because they are Serious Literature that is worth experiencing, they are good and I enjoy them, they were formative for me as a youth, or some combination of all these things, include:
The Odyssey, trans. Emily Wilson
Midnight's Children, Salman Rushdie
The Historian, Elizabeth Kostova
Reamde, Neal Stephenson
Circe, Madeline Miller
The Bartimaeus Trilogy (The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye, Ptolemy's Gate), Jonathan Stroud
The Priory of the Orange Tree, Samantha Shannon
Red White and Royal Blue, Casey McQuiston
The Mask of Mirrors and The Liar's Knot, M.A. Carrick
These are all fiction (much of my nonfiction reading is related to historian work), but I also tend to enjoy narrative nonfiction such as that of Erik Larson or Rachel Maddow. Overall, I read between 50-100 pages every night, occasionally more, but rarely less. I had a long period where I could afford neither the books nor the brainpower, as a broke and overworked PhD student, so I have been going a little hog-wild ever since.

The Countdown
I actually wrote a completely different and longer blog post about this movie but I decided to not post it as it sounded so pretentious. When I plan on writing a reflection about Tick, tick…BOOM! I wanted it to capture my sincerest feelings but I guess I’m really not good with words or writing in general. So in this blog post, I just want to present my raw feelings about it.
I was actually trying to remember the number of times I have watched Tick, tick…BOOM! or remember just how many times a day I listened to its entire OST on spotify but I couldn’t keep count. When I loved something, I tend to become obsessed with it. But I guess for this movie and its music it is not really an obsession but more of a never ending appreciation to a work of art that speaks to my soul in ways I could never put into words. Tick, tick…BOOM! is definitely a must-see movie.
I was scrolling through my youtube feed when I came across this trailer that has someone I am familiar with – Andrew Garfield. I instantly became interested and decided to watch it and at that moment I already know that I will be watching the movie once it became available in Netflix. Why? Because it’s Andrew Garfield in a musical! But little did I know that the movie would introduce me to the artistry of Jonathan Larson. I never imagined that I could relate to the frustration and determination of an artist like him considering that I’m not an artist myself. Anyway, this movie was brilliant because Andrew Garfield has done such a wonderful job in portraying an artist – the passion, determination, frustration and anxiety of someone who lives for the art but never really know when he will get that “time”
This movie is definitely for the dreamers. This is for those who have big dreams but are filled with anxiety because of all the uncertainties in the world. This movie has shown that sometimes talent and hard work are not enough for one to make it – sometimes success is elusive even to those who deserve it. And sometimes, despite all the efforts, one’s time is going to run out and there comes the craziness of having to decide whether to push through or to let go. And I guess most of us have felt that way. We may have experienced being in a situation wherein we have to decide because we do not have much time.
As the movie opens with Jonathan narrating how he’s going to turn 30 in a few weeks and he’s not looking forward to it because it just makes him feel like his time is running out and he has not achieved anything significant yet, it felt as if my heart was pinched. The way Andrew was able to put so much life into the character would just draw you into the movie. And when Andrew sings the lyrics of 30/90 I can’t help but feel so emotional because like what the lyrics are implying, I am also not keen on celebrating my birthdays. I could not remember the last time I felt happy celebrating my birthday. While others treat their birthday as a celebration, I have always felt sadder every 11th of January. I have lost the enthusiasm to celebrate the day I was born simply because I feel like I am wasting my life away as years passed by. And when the lyrics They’re singing “Happy Birthday” You just wanna lay down and cry came along I felt like I want to cry and yet I somehow found comfort because it feels like I am not alone in this situation. It’s really crazy how a song can speak to one’s soul, right? Another song from the movie that left a great impact on me (and is probably my life’s anthem now) is Johnny Can’t Decide. The way the entire song just narrates my frustrations, my fears, my anxieties is just so painfully amazing. I have never heard of a song that describes the way I have been feeling for years. I am in that moment in my life wherein I want to make a decision and yet I’m too scared to do it. What if I hold on for a little while longer? Maybe I can actually reach my goals. But what if it’s time for me to let go and find a different path? Maybe in that way I can find peace. However, my situation right now (financially speaking) is making it harder for me to decide. The lyrics Johnny’s backed against the wall. Can he bend his dreams, just like his friend? Johnny sees that Susan’s right. Ambition eats right through you. Michael doesn’t see why Johnny holds so tight To the things that Johnny feels are true Johnny has no guide Johnny wants to hide. How can you soar when you’re nailed to the floor?         How do you know when it’s time to let go? is speaking directly to me. And I guess the more I listen to this song, the more comforting it gets. I am still stuck right now. I do not know if I want to be led by fear or by love. But I know that eventually my time is gonna run out. The countdown clock would sound louder and louder….but I hope that before it runs out of its ticking sound, it’s not too late for me to decide. I am a dreamer too. And damn, I want to reach my dreams as well.
PS, Louder than Words is also a great song from the musical and I love it so much. Actually, I love all the songs.
x,

[ad_1] [MUSIC PLAYING]While you stroll in a room, do you've sway?kara swisherI’m Kara Swisher, and also you’re taking note of “Sway.” My visitor these days is actor Andrew Garfield. He lately starred within the movie “Tick, Tick Increase!” in regards to the composer Jonathan Larson, who gave us the Broadway hit Hire. Garfield’s efficiency snagged him a Golden Globe for Highest Actor in a Comedy or Musical. And he’s up for an Oscar too. However my favourite efficiency from Andrew Garfield is the one who’s greater than a decade outdated from “The Social Community,” the movie in regards to the founding of Fb and the upward push of Mark Zuckerberg. Garfield performed Eduardo Saverin, Zuckerberg’s co-founder and frenemy. After all, I had a entrance row seat to the early days of Fb. So I sought after to begin proper there.Andrew Garfield, welcome to “Sway.”andrew garfieldI’m very, more than happy to be right here.kara swisherSo let’s get started with this function — it was once a breakout function for you, I feel — Eduardo Saverin, who's the unique investor in Fb. He was once a classmate of Mark Zuckerberg. And he’s type of the sense of right and wrong of the film. I used to be round in the ones days when the true Mark Zuckerberg was once kicking across the Valley seeking to carry cash with Sean Parker. I do know Sean Parker lovely neatly. Did your function within the 2010 movie “The Social Community” provide you with any explicit insights about what has since spread out at Fb? As it was once an attractive difficult film.andrew garfieldYeah.kara swisherAnd let me simply say earlier than we commence, I had a dialogue with Mark about it. And he stated, that is how individuals are going to bear in mind me. And I stated, I’m positive you’re going to do a long way worse issues going ahead, which in reality grew to become out to be true. So inform me a bit bit about the way you’re having a look at that.andrew garfieldOh my goodness, your prophesying is sadly very apt. I used to be a tender child. I used to be 23, 24 once I signed up to do that undertaking. After I learn the script, you pay attention it’s Aaron Sorkin and also you pass, oh, he’s going to kill those other people, like he’s going to in point of fact shine a mild into the nooks and crannies of the psyches of the folk that create those platforms. And, in fact, I instantly close my Fb web page down once I learn the script.kara swisherTruly? What in it made you do this?andrew garfieldI feel what Aaron laid out was once roughly — the very important wound of Mark Zuckerberg, or his interpretation of it, of an lack of ability to glue and desiring to create a automobile for his very explicit skill to glue in shallow techniques. After which the way it’s roughly — his disorder has turn out to be all of our disorder. And it roughly struck me as this type of — the rotten head of the fish impacts the remainder of the frame. And, in fact, it’s simply Aaron’s interpretation and our interpretation and Jesse Eisenberg’s and David Fincher’s, nevertheless it felt lovely unattainable to disclaim.kara swisherProper, neatly, that’s a fascinating idea of this concept is his disorder is our disorder. I at all times say, I known as it the pricy training of Mark Zuckerberg, which, I imply, our expense, now not his. , I imply, he were given wealthy. I’d love to play a clip from a scene within the movie. That is simply after your personality, Eduardo Saverin, arrived at Fb for the millionth consumer birthday celebration, which grew to become out to be an ambush during which Saverin is advised his shares shall be diluted. I feel this was once an incredible scene. Saverin confronts Mark, who's coding away at his pc.archived recording (eduardo)Mark?archived recording (sean)He’s stressed in.archived recording (eduardo)Sorry?archived recording (sean)He’s stressed in.archived recording (eduardo)Is he?archived recording (sean)Sure. [BOOM]archived recording (eduardo)How about now? You continue to stressed in?archived recording (sean)Name safety.
archived recording (eduardo)You issued 24 million new stocks of inventory.archived recording (mark)You had been advised that if new buyers come alongside —archived recording (eduardo)How a lot had been your stocks diluted? How a lot had been his?archived recording (gretchen)What was once Mr. Zuckerberg’s possession percentage diluted all the way down to?archived recording (eduardo)It wasn’t.archived recording (gretchen)What was once Mr. Moskovitz’s possession percentage diluted all the way down to?archived recording (eduardo)It wasn’t.archived recording (gretchen)What was once Sean Parker’s possession percentage diluted all the way down to?archived recording (eduardo)It wasn’t.archived recording (gretchen)What was once Peter Thiel’s possession percentage diluted all the way down to?archived recording (eduardo)It wasn’t.archived recording (gretchen)And what was once your possession percentage diluted all the way down to?archived recording (eduardo)0.3 %.[MUSIC PLAYING]andrew garfieldThat Trent Reznor ranking.kara swisherYeah, superb. What did that scene give away to you?andrew garfieldI am getting chills taking note of that scene. It rings a bell in my memory of what you stated firstly of our dialog about Eduardo in point of fact being, , the sense of right and wrong of that entire undertaking firstly, that may have been retained, in reality, and by means of exiling the center, Mark ended up in all of the bother he’s ended up in. I in finding that somewhat touching and tragic. , the tragic flaw of this type of Shakespearean model of Mark Zuckerberg that Aaron Sorkin created is an exile of the center. And the motto of transfer speedy and ruin issues possibly doesn’t have all of the benefits that he had prior to now concept. And I feel Aaron could be very beneficiant in that ultimate scene of the movie the place Mark is simply refreshing his Fb web page to peer if his ex has authorized his pal request, it displays the soul of the person who simply needs what all of us need, which is love and to be liked and to like. And I'd say it was once an excessively, very beneficiant factor that Aaron and David gave Mark in that second.kara swisherAnd likewise he had his female friend the entire time. Like that was once dramatic conceit. However I feel he were given it proper about connection evidently. However on the time, those had been individuals who had been celebrated. , those had been the winners. And one of the crucial issues that was once laborious, I feel, was once going towards it. Since you had been — your personality was once portrayed as a villain in that tale on the time, anyone who is like a bummer on innovation and getting too giant whilst Sean Parker was once type of celebrated because the go-go man.andrew garfieldMm-hm, yeah, and I feel that speaks to a type of an youth in our tradition, I feel, and a type of party of youth, a party of minor, a party of a type of irresponsibility that we have got simply now matured. It’s why we nonetheless worship Kanye West. It’s why we nonetheless worship other people like Elon Musk, ? There’s a type of immaturity that we idolize and idealize. However then for me, it’s like we’ve volunteered to be the habit analysis guinea pigs for Mark and his set of rules and all of the different social community platforms. We've the ability to disengage. We've the ability to modify off. And I assume I’m excited by —kara swisherPerhaps now not, in reality.andrew garfieldYou assume?kara swisherI feel it’s now not simply habit, it’s habit and necessity.andrew garfieldCompletely.kara swisherIt's important to do it for paintings. , it's a must to do it on your existence. And within the pandemic, you wish to have it to reserve meals and keep up a correspondence and pass to college. So it’s unavoidable and addictive on the identical time.andrew garfieldI imply, it’s a in point of fact excellent level. And I nonetheless pass to, how will we escape from monetary greed, energy, standing? The issues which might be,
, killing youngsters on Instagram, there’s one thing in regards to the descent into the self and an acceptance of each unmarried facet of ourselves this is being threatened and exiled. So we’re in reality now not in a position to be entire in combination. And, once more, I feel it’s a type of symptom of the disorder of this actual wound in Mr. Zuckerberg and the way his lack of ability to glue has turn out to be our lack of ability to in point of fact connect with ourselves in every different.kara swisher, it was once fascinating, the tagline for “The Social Community” was once “you don’t get to 500 million buddies with out making a couple of enemies.” And if that's the case, it was once simply the Winklevii, the Winklevoss brothers, who're simple to make a laugh of. Even supposing now they’re Bitcoin billionaires, so I assume the whole thing grew to become out OK for them.andrew garfieldHowever I'd say “grew to become out OK” is a subjective factor, ? It may well be turning out OK for the financial institution accounts. It might not be turning out OK for his or her inside lives.kara swisherAndrew, I don’t concern for the Winklevoss. It’s known as a mile vast and a foot deep however having spent a while with them. In the end, they’re simply fantastic.andrew garfieldI perceive.kara swisherThey’re simply fantastic. So that you’re now not on social media in any respect now. You had been on Twitter for a time or by no means? I don’t see you any place there.andrew garfieldNo, no I've a secret Twitter account simply to roughly creep round and watch other people. And it’s my primary supply of stories with following folks that I admire and recognize. However no, I don’t do social media. I imply, I take into accout all over “The Social Community” after which into “Spider-Guy,” I used to be in my mid-20s. And I nonetheless felt too at risk of be on social media. I knew that if I sought after to have the lifetime of privateness and coverage and freedom and wholeness, I knew that I wasn’t going so as to be uncovered to all the faceless, unvoiced, anonymous other people on social media.kara swisher— who've an opinion about you —andrew garfieldCompletely.kara swisher— who've an opinion about you otherwise you’re Spider-Guy or no matter you occur to be doing.andrew garfieldOf my female friend or no matter it's, I do know that there have been positive issues that I'd have to give protection to. I've a chum, an older mentor within the performing group, who says to be an actor, to reside as an actor, and to ultimate as an artist, it's a must to have the center of a kid within the pores and skin of a rhino. And I believed, neatly, I’ve were given to place — I’ve were given to place some guards on the gate. I’ve were given to place some warriors and canine on the gate and construct a moat and pull up the drawbridge and best let the folk in that in point of fact get it to completely are available in. And that’s OK.kara swisherAnd that applies to Twitter or Fb, Instagram, such things as that out of your viewpoint?andrew garfieldI imply, I feel particularly, all the ones. And particularly for younger other people and younger ladies in particular Instagram, the obsession with symbol now, the type of two dimensional symbol that we provide evaluating our insides to other folks’s outsides, that is the place — I do know you've youngsters of your personal. So it’s one thing that you most likely combat with always. I’m now not positive.kara swisherNeatly, I’m a sharent. No, sadly, my son calls me a sharent. I've one son who hates it, one son who loves it. But it surely relies. It’s a in point of fact fascinating factor as a result of I in point of fact do have, I'd say, an habit to Twitter. And I learn information on it.However that is an interview of you. By way of the way in which, you do fairly neatly on social media. Simply so , they believe you’re lovely and your entire girlfriends are lovely. You have a tendency to get a very easy highway on there. I
wouldn’t say that of Kanye West or —andrew garfieldNo, neatly, I feel it’s as a result of I don’t interact. I feel it’s as a result of I don’t give an excessive amount of. I feel it’s as a result of I give simply what I think comfy giving. And it’s unique. It’s me. However there’s portions of me which might be mine and that I would like — want to give protection to. And I'm very, more than happy with that. I’m satisfied that I were given for the reason that early social community enjoy. As it roughly scared the shit out of me, to be frank.kara swisherHowever social media, this can be a manner for celebrities to achieve immediately to their enthusiasts. It’s a in point of fact fascinating phenomena for a large number of other people. I feel it's. It’s attention-grabbing as it was once a lot more managed earlier than.andrew garfieldYeah, and I feel there’s completely a large number of attractiveness in that. Like, I really like seeing Chris Hemsworth understanding. I really like seeing The Rock putting out along with his daughter. I really like, know — it’s like a performative intimacy that feels very comforting and really, very candy. It’s an extension of the efficiency. And I feel that may be wholesome for other people. That may be in point of fact excellent for some other people. And I in point of fact don’t pass judgement on it. I in reality envy it. I want I used to be much less delicate, in some way.kara swisherPerhaps take a look at TikTok.andrew garfieldOof.kara swisherIt may be delightful. When you like air frying, that’s what I am getting a large number of movies of. I am getting a large number of air fryer movies. I don’t know why. Hollywood has misplaced a large number of flooring to tech corporations over time. And streaming is now ascendant. Do you are feeling the shift in energy? At the moment, you had been in “Spider-Guy.” Handiest the massive blockbusters appear to paintings in theaters anymore, proper? I simply interviewed Ted Sarandos, Netflix. I’ve interviewed Ari Emanuel, an entire bunch of various other people. And they have got other takes on it. However maximum of them come to the realization that streaming is the place the whole thing’s at. How has that modified your calculation as an artist? How do you take into consideration that?andrew garfieldI have a tendency to not. I simply love telling tales. I've the privileged place of simply attending to make tales. And the message is way more necessary than the medium. The tips are a long way more than the medium. So long as there's a medium, then I’m satisfied. So long as Netflix exists, so long as —kara swisherSo that you don’t thoughts? A large number of other people in Hollywood are minding that idea.andrew garfieldI thoughts to the level that I do know, and I feel all of us in our bones, that being in a room in combination gazing a tale play out and experiencing a tale in combination, respiring in combination, crying in combination, giggling in combination is every other type of medication that we in reality want. We're a storytelling animal. We're a which means making animal. And it’s very, very laborious to try this with out being in combination. And for me, and I do know for most of the people, that we get to in reality attach within the non-Zuckerberg longing technique to attach is by means of being in a real room in combination, now not a digital one.kara swisherI see. So I take it you’re now not going into the Metaverse at this level, with the exception of if it’s a “Spider-Guy” film, as an example.andrew garfieldI haven't any need to enter the Metaverse. That was once probably the most terrifying advertisements I’ve ever noticed for the rest. And it did really feel love it was once created by means of non-humans. And, yeah, it was once devastating, in reality, to my soul. However concentrate, I really like — I snuck in and I noticed “Spider-Guy” within the theaters.kara swisherThat is “Spider-Guy No Manner House.” You play one of the crucial Spider-Mans.
There’s 3 Spider — 4 —andrew garfield3.kara swisher— 3 Spider-Males within the multiverse, necessarily, a multiverse scenario. That did really well. It was once a blockbuster on the field administrative center, on the bodily field administrative center, which made many to mention, film theaters aren’t lifeless. However my level was once, all of the others aren't. Has the pandemic quashed the rest however our love of superheroes?andrew garfieldI feel going to the cinema has turn out to be a moderately extra of an important day for all people. And I feel we in point of fact make a choice, particularly all over the pandemic with the whole thing occurring and particularly with, , the monetary crunch that a large number of individuals are feeling, I feel there's simply extra selective and making it a extra sacred match. It’s, once more, it’s this type of deep bone longing, that we have got this type of human longing to be in combination, to be experiencing one thing in combination. And the similar with reside tune, ? I’m in reality now not involved. I used to be at an match ultimate evening. And Guillermo Del Toro, the good filmmaker, made a speech and principally stated it’s been, in fact, a shitty 12 months for film theaters. But it surely’s been a fully improbable 12 months for motion pictures. And I feel that stands. And he’s the one who stated, , the speculation is way more necessary than the medium.[MUSIC PLAYING]kara swisherWe’ll be again in a minute.By way of the way in which, you'll be able to use that minute to move remark at the disorder of Mark Zuckerberg or anything on this episode. Simply consult with nytimes.com/sway. Extra with Andrew Garfield after the ruin. There’s buzz on social media, in order that , whether or not you’re going to play Spider-Guy once more. Are you?andrew garfieldI don’t know. It’s now not one thing I’ve dominated out. It was once my favourite superhero when — since I used to be 3 years outdated. So stepping again in as a 36, 37-year-old guy was once extremely humorous and stress-free. And simply an excellent gift, an excellent wonder. And to paintings with, , my hero, my Spider-Guy, Tobey Maguire, after which this improbable younger Spider-Guy, Tom Holland. So now shifting ahead, I’m now not, I’m now not totally positive. However in relation to opting for roles, it’s in point of fact — I feel the function of the artist, and I take this critically, is to be the prophets, to be those which might be reflecting the days we’re in. And I feel with “tick, tick...BOOM!,” that’s what the principle theme of this movie is.kara swisherSo how did you select it? It’s a musical in regards to the writer of “Hire,” Jonathan Larson. Inform me how you were given all for it. Why did Lin-Manuel Miranda forged you? Since you’ve mentioned this on many displays, you didn’t understand how to sing, however it appears you'll be able to. Why had been you interested in it and why do you assume he was once interested in you for this function?andrew garfieldI used to be interested in it as it felt just like the quintessential initiatory degree of being a tender artist that Jonathan was once symbolizing on this explicit a part of his existence, this two-week duration, this may occasionally I, received’t I make it second. And if I don’t make it this time, do I stay making an attempt? And I feel it’s that factor that all of us undergo, if we’re fortunate sufficient, to seek out one thing that we like, to seek out one thing that we really feel known as to, or to seek out our genius, and I feel that’s why such a lot of other people, particularly younger other people, are connecting to the movie as a result of I feel particularly all over the pandemic and those ultimate two years of roughly combat and struggling, for younger other people to peer anyone totally decide to their present totally decide to their dream within the face of failure and rejection and isolation and possibly now not making it's deeply, deeply inspiring. And this can be a roughly archetypal adventure that each younger artist has to move via.
kara swisherProper, “Hire” was once about that, was once a adventure of artists and quite a lot of activists and within the time of AIDS. Lin stated it appears, he noticed you at the degree at “Angels in The united states.” I additionally noticed your efficiency. You had been unbelievable.andrew garfieldOh, thanks.kara swisherWhat do you assume he noticed in that efficiency? Communicate a bit bit about that efficiency. As a result of “Angels” is in point of fact somewhat a display. And it’s in two portions. It’s an excessively heavy elevate of a display for an actor, and particularly your phase.andrew garfieldYeah, it’s 8 and part hours. It’s by means of the good Tony Kushner. He named it “A Homosexual Fantasia on Nationwide Topics.” And it’s set all over the AIDS disaster, as you stated. And it follows a gaggle of people who find themselves making an attempt to determine the right way to reside within the rigidity of existence and loss of life and heaven and hell and, , now not simply the right way to live on, however to in reality reside. And, yeah, I play a personality known as Prior Walter who in the end has to come to a decision whether or not he needs to reside or die.kara swisherHe has AIDS.andrew garfieldYeah, and, yeah, it’s this improbable roughly soul-wrenching adventure and vocally very, very difficult. Sure, I by no means sung earlier than. However I did set up to get via 8 displays every week for a 12 months and a part off and on and now not leave out a display. And I feel Lin noticed that and concept, neatly, if he has some sense of pitch, if he’s now not completely tone deaf, then this — he may well be my man.kara swisherFor this one.andrew garfieldFor “tick, tick...BOOM!”kara swisherHad you noticed “Hire.” I will be able to’t believe you had been sufficiently old. However I don’t understand how outdated you're.andrew garfieldI’m 38. No, I wasn’t. However I’ve noticed the manufacturing and the movie and, clearly, simply an enormous admirer of Jonathan in his writing and in his — , he wasn’t making a song to sound lovely. He was once an activist with all of the remainder of his buddies. He was once seeking to save other people’s lives. And the thriller of the truth that he died so younger. He dies on the age of 35 and simply earlier than the primary evening of the primary preview of the off-broadway manufacturing of “Hire.”kara swisherYep, I’ll by no means fail to remember that.andrew garfieldHe was once about to in the end get the harvest of the seeds that he have been planting for the ultimate 35 years. He passes away. I in finding that so shifting. Adore it speaks to the extra non secular measurement of what we’re doing right here. And I feel the object that folks, like our buddies within the tech global, roughly want an training in — and it’s humorous, I think like other people within the tech global, a large number of them appear to have giant come-to-Jesus moments. And finally end up going to Esalen and occurring silent retreats and, , putting out with gurus in India —kara swisherThat’s simply Jack Dorsey. Simply so you —andrew garfieldThere’s a couple of I’ve come throughout.kara swisherMarc Benioff does, yeah, you’re proper. There’s a pair. Yeah, that’s all narcissistic, in order that .andrew garfieldThat is what I'm wondering, you notice?kara swisherExcellent for them. Yeah, yeah, neatly, don’t marvel. Let me provide you with that piece of knowledge at this time. Lin-Manuel Miranda stated that “Hire” and Larson, which is the nature you play, had been massively inspirational for him. Like Larson, he was once as soon as a suffering songwriter.Clearly, “Hamilton” was once his game-changer. Do you assume it was once a private tale for him? And did it really feel such as you had been portraying each Lin and Larson? Do you assume that was once what it was once about for him?andrew garfieldYeah, completely, I feel that there is not any — neatly, there’s no Jonathan Larson with out Stephen Sondheim. And there’s no Lin-Manuel Miranda with out Jonathan Larson and Stephen Sondheim.
So it felt like an ancestral honoring for Lin., I take into accout, he confirmed me the primary minimize of the movie. As a result of we had been rea l— we’ve been such improbable collaborators in this. And I simply was once so moved by means of the movie. And I used to be weeping. And I stated, I known as him I used to be like, dude, I simply need to say thanks. Thanks such a lot for honoring your actors. Thanks such a lot for honoring my interpretation of John. And he was once so relieved. And he stated, oh good friend, I’m so satisfied to listen to that. And no offense, however I had a lot larger fish to fry as a result of I don’t need to be haunted by means of the ghost of Jonathan Larson for the remainder of my existence for fucking up his tale. And it’s additionally, once more, as it’s so private to Lin, the extra private it turns into for the storytellers, the extra private it turns into for an target market. So unexpectedly, , it’s Lin’s existence, it’s my existence, it’s any actor’s existence, it’s any artist’s existence, it’s any playwright’s existence. It’s somebody who has felt known as to be a attorney’s existence. It’s about vocation. And it’s about problem. And it’s about combat. It’s about salmon swimming upstream into your personal existence, into your personal future. And so yeah, however that’s what Lin does. He makes it so rattling private. There’s an excellent second within the movie the place in the course of a struggle between myself and my female friend, we virtually make up. And we’re about to get in point of fact shut once more. After which unexpectedly —archived recording (susan)Oh my god.[MUSIC PLAYING] Now it’s out within the open. You’re serious about how you'll be able to flip this right into a tune, aren’t you?[MUSIC PLAYING]archived recording (jonathan)No. What?andrew garfieldJonathan, the nature I play, begins writing a tune in his head. And he will get stuck at it by means of his female friend. And Lin confirmed it to all of his author buddies. And so they all simply crumbled and coated their faces. And so they stated Lin, you'll be able to’t display them that, you'll be able to’t display them one thing so true in our lives. And it was once, yeah, it’s stunning.kara swisherYeah, writers are at all times promoting anyone out. That’s the way you — I feel Joan Didion — I feel it’s a Joan Didion quote. You don’t agree with someone who’s a author of any kind to not subsume each unmarried a part of their lives into their artwork.Probably the most issues I believed you probably did nail, once they display footage of Larson himself, his manic power — he had improbable manic — I take into accout seeing him. You'll want to really feel each desperation and promise coming off of him virtually always. Like he needed to make it, he needed to make it. How did you channel that? As a result of he was once a novel — you roughly get started to think about what he may have made subsequent.andrew garfieldYeah, I imply, it’s a profound query as a result of he was once dwelling in a profound edge, I feel. And for me, in my interpretation, it’s completely related to how younger he was once when he gave up the ghost. That manic power, that grew to become as much as an 11 always, that lack of ability to sleep, that, as you stated fantastically, that blend of desperation and promise feels to me completely related to this subconscious figuring out that he didn’t have a large number of time.kara swisherTruly?andrew garfieldYeah, that’s the mysterious manner I feel the subconscious works. Another way, what was once this ticking? It wasn’t about him turning 30. It wasn’t about his female friend’s organic clock. It wasn’t in regards to the loss of fulfillment he had made. The ones are all superficial. There’s a deeper dialog going down. And there was once a line within the authentic “tick, tick...BOOM!” which they needed to minimize after he gave up the ghost as it felt a long way too painful for other people to listen to. And the road was once, “Occasionally I think like my middle goes to blow up.
” And it’s a prophecy for the aortic aneurysm, the Marfan syndrome that they came upon after he gave up the ghost. For a wholesome younger man to die at 35, it was once as though — and that is me being roughly a non secular woo-woo actor kind, nevertheless it’s like —kara swisherThanks for doing that from California, particularly. You’re in Malibu, proper? Highest.andrew garfieldYeah, I’m afraid so. However no, I think like he knew. There was once a figuring out. There was once as though the theater gods didn’t let him sleep, saved on sending him melodies and inspiration to mention, howdy, you don’t have a large number of time. We want you to ship “Hire” since the global wishes your items. The arena wishes this opus of yours.kara swisherProper. Partially, it is a love letter to Stephen Sondheim too. And Larson was once closely influenced and mentored by means of him. How did you take into consideration that a part of it? As a result of that was once a key courting. Clearly, Sondheim is the godfather to a lot of these other people in a large number of techniques, the trendy American musical.andrew garfieldYeah, I imply, neatly, clearly, the whole thing has modified within the wake of his loss of life, . No longer that we ever took Stephen Sondheim as a right, however earlier than he handed, yeah, him being this type of lionized, roughly iconic determine in Jonathan Larson’s — I am getting an emblem, an emblem of without equal mentorship. And, in fact, within the wake of his passing, it’s much more shifting. Since the voice message that we pay attention on the finish of the movie, Lin displays the movie to Steve. And Steve responds by means of announcing, “You’ve handled me kindly and royally. And for that, I'm ceaselessly thankful.” Pause. “I do have one or two notes.”kara swisherAfter all.andrew garfieldAnd he stated, the voice message that the actor taking part in me, Bradley, leaves for Jonathan on the finish of the movie to inspire him? I simply don’t assume I'd use that roughly language. I’ve written one thing as another choice for you. I’ve recorded it for you. Be at liberty to make use of it if you'll be able to’t get Bradley Whitford to return in and do his looping strains. So Lin gained this voice recording. And it’s Stephen Sondheim’s voice in our movie.[RINGING][BEEP]archived recording (stephen sondheim)John, Steve Sondheim right here. Rosa gave me this quantity. I am hoping it’s OK I’m calling you.andrew garfieldLeaving this voicemail for, in fact, Jonathan and for me, but in addition for each younger artist that watches this movie, it’s like they have got their very own little private encouragement from one of the crucial nice artists of any time, and particularly, arguably the best musical theater artist ever.archived recording (stephen sondheim)The principle factor, regardless that, is that it’s first price paintings and has a long run. And so do you. I’ll name you later with some ideas, if that’s OK. In the meantime, be proud.[CLICK][MUSIC PLAYING]kara swisher, it’s fascinating, this urgency, particularly within the face of mortality, is one thing that carries via this movie fairly. And since we realize it now what took place to him, most of the people know that this man wasn’t going so as to understand his genius for much longer roughly factor. And it does added poignancy to what he created as it was once so stunning. While you take into consideration the affect of loss of life — and also you had been simply on Stephen Colbert speaking about shedding your mother of most cancers only in the near past.My dad died when I used to be 5. So I've a bit little bit of — and I save loss of life quotes always. I take advantage of it to encourage myself. I concentrate to Steve Jobs’ speech about loss of life like each couple of months, necessarily. So it informs me so much too.But it surely was once very touching when Colbert requested you about shedding your mother. And also you stated, I am hoping this grief remains with me on account of all of the unexpressed love that I didn’t get to inform her.
When you don’t thoughts, I’m going to play a clip of that.andrew garfieldPlease.archived recording (andrew garfield)I were given to sing Jonathan Larson’s unfinished tune whilst concurrently making a song for my mom and her unfinished tune. And I’m indebted to John. And I — and I’m indebted to Lin-Manuel Miranda. I’m indebted to everybody who’s introduced me to this position in order that I will be able to honor probably the most stunning person who I’ve ever skilled in my existence via my artwork and use it so that you could heal, use it so that you could stitch up the injuries.kara swisherSo inform me about your mom. What you do you want her to be remembered as, but even so stitching up the injuries —andrew garfieldOh, guy.kara swisher— which is a gorgeous metaphor, in reality. We were given a large number of wounds regardless that.andrew garfieldYeah, neatly, then the ones are the issues that — what's that fab Mary Oliver line from “Wild Ducks,” “Inform me about melancholy, yours, and I’ll let you know mine.” The type of group in sorrow, the group in being human and the woundedness that all of us percentage. And, once more, it’s about descent, to descend into our wounds and to heal them is the one manner via. And, once more, this obsession with ascension, this obsession with — lengthening existence fairly than deepening existence I in finding somewhat alarming and provoking. My mother was once anyone who was once a pantheistic. She noticed God in all issues. And I say God, I imply the interconnectedness, the the whole thing. And the poem that she sought after learn at her memorial was once, “Don't stand by means of my grave and weep. I'm really not there. I don't sleep,” which is clearly a vintage and completely absolute best and lovely. She was once anyone that had this sort of loss of ego. She was once anyone that simply sought after to serve others. She was once anyone that knew we’re right here after which we’re now not. And we're the movements and the — possibly an important phrase, which does choke me up — is the kindness that we depart at the back of. As a result of she was once and is — as a result of I do know this too — she’s now not long past. She remains to be right here. Her kindness lives in me, in my brother, in my father, in each person who she ever met and in everybody that I've ever met. As a result of her affect on me is inevitably so nice. And I’m so thankful for it.As a result of she in point of fact was once the most efficient people. And I feel her legacy is a legacy of kindness, a legacy of compassion, a legacy of gentleness, a legacy of an excessively small, invisible, massive existence of affection and kindness.kara swisherThat’s a beautiful elegy for her. While you take into consideration what that implies going ahead right here, you’ve performed anyone who left too quickly, what do you take into consideration paintings forward? What do you assume your center of attention must be?andrew garfieldThat's the very important query of overdue, how are we intended to spend our time? And I feel it's completely distinctive in relation to how every people resolution that. I love that concept that all of us have a selected thread that we grasp directly to, to weave into this tapestry and to weave into this type of group of existence that we’re part of.For me, I simply need to proceed telling tales which might be life-affirming, death-affirming, in reality. As you are saying that you just remind your self of Steve Jobs’ improbable phrases round loss of life and another gurus that experience nice perception about that ultimate journey.kara swisher, there’s an app — you must get it — We Croak.andrew garfieldWe Croak?kara swisherIt’s a bit frog. And it offers you loss of life quotes.andrew garfieldOh, that’s superb.kara swisherAnd it reminds — I’m going to must — I've to learn this to you. I’m sorry. This says, “In Bhutan, they are saying considering loss of life 5 instances day-to-day brings happiness.” Which, it does.
andrew garfieldI dig it. We Croak is a genius and hilarious. I completely find it irresistible. However and likewise, , I take into consideration one of the most other people we’ve been speaking about. I take into consideration Sondheim. I take into consideration Lin. I take into consideration considered one of my mentors, Mike Nichols, the good filmmaker and improv actor and genius of his time. And the 3 of them have one thing in not unusual. And that it’s two legacies. One legacy is the paintings that they left at the back of and roughly the drugs in that paintings, the wonderful thing about that paintings, the therapeutic in that paintings. However then they had been all — and Lin is that this as neatly at a tender age — improbable mentors to an entire technology of artists. And I feel to coach my eye on that feels in point of fact, in point of fact excellent. And it’s begun to occur the place younger actors are asking questions of me in relation to the right way to pursue this loopy career and this loopy calling. As a result of I feel you'll be able to do a type of non secular take a look at at the tradition by means of the artwork that it’s generating or, , you have a look at the ultimate management within the White Area and the loss of artwork in that setting. And also you pass, oh yeah, there’s a soul illness there. It’s glaring.kara swisher, Elon Musk thinks we’re, in fact, all in a simulation. That is it is a online game being performed by means of teenagers of the long run. And so they’re fucking with us virtually repeatedly. And Trump is simply the newest factor within the recreation, necessarily, which is more or less a horrifying concept.andrew garfieldNeatly, that’s a positive fireplace technique to disassociate and really feel a loss of accountability for any of your movements. That’s a beautiful justification.kara swisherOh, I such as you going for Musk, excellent for you. Don't do this to him on social media. He turns out to have a couple of buddies there and does fairly neatly at it. Anyway, let me ask you one ultimate query. When you had to select any function that it is advisable to do at this time, is there any tale you need to inform?andrew garfieldOh wow, you simply stumped me. Let me say one thing first about Elon Musk as a result of I think like I’ve been unfair. As a result of I don’t know him. I’ve by no means met him. I by no means sat with him.I'd be fascinated to. And I’m clearly simply going off of my interpretation and, , a type of a superficial glance. As a result of, , I don’t need to be judgmental. I’m simply roughly, I’m fascinated with the discourse. And I’m fascinated with the folk which might be shaping our tradition at this time.I simply in finding it completely attention-grabbing. And it’s necessary. It’s necessary that we don’t idolize someone, any human being. And we see what occurs. And we see what’s going down in Ukraine at this time, this improbable president who refuses to be idolized. He’s completely assembly the instant with humility and with self-sacrifice. So I feel that an instance of that roughly humility and that roughly exact management is in point of fact humbling with out ego reputedly being the principle riding heart and drive. On the subject of a tale I need to inform or — , it’s a unusual second, Kara, as a result of I’ve been running somewhat relentlessly for the ultimate couple of years. And I’m very, very pleased with the paintings that I’ve created, particularly with “tick, tick...BOOM!,” that, , it does talk of my soul. Perhaps that is necessary to mention, I think a bit bit like — to not examine myself to this sort of genius, however Simone Biles simply roughly going, what? I don’t assume I will be able to do that vault. I’m getting the bends, I’m getting the spins. I want to simply roughly sit down down, strengthen my fellow gymnasts, and possibly sit down the following couple of performs out.And I feel it’s possibly necessary to speak about as neatly. As a result
of we don’t incessantly give ourselves the chance to simply to have a look at the horizon and be a human being fairly than a human doing. And I unquestionably really feel like I’m in a season of being and simply roughly considering and supporting the family members round me and having a existence and being a little bit of a personal Andrew for some time. That’s the following undertaking possibly is simply to roughly perform a little private therapeutic and private roughly paintings with simply with myself.kara swisherNeatly, that’s a very good function, clearly. That’s the most efficient function it is advisable to do. Thanks such a lot.andrew garfieldYeah, likewise.kara swisher“Sway” is a manufacturing of New York Occasions Opinion. It’s produced by means of Nayeema Raza, Blakeney Schick, Daphne Chen, Caitlin O’Keefe, and Wyatt Orme with authentic tune by means of Isaac Jones, blending by means of Sonia Herrero and Carole Sabouraud and fact-checking by means of Kate Sinclair and Mary Marge Locker. Today would have been Marian, Bruce’s mother’s, 110th birthday!  She died in July of 2010, rather suddenly, and Bruce and I weren’t able to get to Florida, where she lived, until a couple of days later.  Pam, Marian’s faithful friend and caregiver, and the person who arranged all the other caregivers, had taken her to the hospital, and she died there.  We worked for several days with Pam and the authorities in Sarasota to arrange for her burial, the memorial service, distribution of her things to her caregivers and local charities (with some personal items being shipped to us), as well as handling the financial issues of her estate.  The memorial service was lovely and most of the people there were those who had cared for her for over twenty years.  Nearly all of Marian’s family and friends had preceded her in death, which is what happens when you live to be 98 years old.
Tumblr media
Marian was a lovely, smart, talented woman.  She lived a long life filled with many challenges, including losing her mother when she was only twelve years old, and losing two husbands.  She was a wonderful mother to Bruce, a patient and caring mother-in-law to Bruce’s first wife, Kathy, and to me, and the best grandmother she could be, at such an advanced age, to Hobie.  She was also a faithful and loving wife to Bruce’s father, Benny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marian was a talented artist.  I’m happy that we have so many of her paintings, and that we have shared others with Hobie and Katie, as well as donated many to fundraising events, so that her art has been spread far and wide.
Tumblr media
Marian was cute as a child and lovely as a woman.  She had a marvelous sense of humor and we were always laughing together.  She adored her son and grandson and they both brought her a lot of joy throughout her time with them.  I tried to be as loving and supportive as I could be during the time I knew her and I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from her and spend time with her.  We all  miss her a lot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Walking in the neighborhood yesterday I saw this adorable snow person and couldn’t resist the urge to capture it for posterity.
Tumblr media
One of the wonderful things about the holidays is the photos of family and friends that we receive.  These two beautiful young women are our grand nieces, Brynn and Maeve, the daughters of our nephew Randy, our brother Rod’s son. They live in Massachusetts and I don’t see them often.  In fact, I’m the only member of the family who has any contact with them, because our nephew and his Dad have been estranged since the girls were babies, so it is wonderful to get these reminders of how much they have grown up and what is happening in their lives.
Tumblr media
Our friend, Jenna, moved to Mexico with her family, and then later to Michigan, where her family lives, when her and Alex’s daughters were little.  Now Saby and Paloma have grown into lovely young women.  I’ve been hoping to visit them every summer for the last several years but a little thing like a global pandemic has interfered with my plans.  Perhaps this year I’ll get there!
Tumblr media
I’ve decided this year to talk more about the films and television series we watch, because we find them fascinating and I want to share them with you.  Yesterday we watched “Tick, Tick, Boom!”.  the story about playwright Jonathan Larson.  He is best known for writing the musical “Rent”.  Sadly, he died the night before “Rent” opened on Broadway.
Tumblr media
The story of “Tick, Tick, Boom!” is about another of his musical productions.  Since he died so young it is tragic, but also hauntingly beautiful and a joy to watch.  Andrew Garfield plays Larson and has been nominated for an Academy Award for his performance, which is powerful.
Tumblr media
The movie was directed by one of our favorite writer-directors, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who brought “Hamilton” to Broadway.  “Tick, Tick, Boom!” was riveting and entertaining and we highly recommend it.

I'm turning 30 in six days. I'm so tired. Jonathan Larson said it best in his autobiographical musical tick, tick... BOOM!: "They're singing, 'Happy Birthday'/You just want to lay down and cry/Not just another birthday/It's 30/90/Why can't you stay 29/Hell,you still feel like you're 22/Turn 30, 1990/ Bang! You're dead/What can you do?" https://www.instagram.com/p/CmIh6BnD85m/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Birthday Blues
“ They're singing, "Happy birthday" You just wanna lay down and cry Not just another birthday, it's 30/90 Why can't you stay 29 Hell, you still feel like you're 22 Turn 30 in 1990 Bang! You're dead, what can you do? What can you do? What can you do? “
“They're singing, "Happy birthday" You just wish you could run away Who cares about a birthday? But 30/90, hey Can't you be optimistic? You're no longer the ingenue Turn 30, 1990 Voom! You're passe What can you do? What can you do? What can you do?”
“ They're singing, "Happy birthday" I just wish it all were a dream It feels much more like dooms day What 30/90 seems I'm dying for a twister I don't see a rainbow, do you? Turn 30 into 90″
