Storytime: My brother Dave used to manage a Little Ceasars, and he hated it. So when my mom asked him what he wanted on his birthday cake, he jokingly said the Little Ceasars guy being stabbed with his own spear. My mom, who doesn't always get sarcasm, didn't even question it. She lovingly made him exactly what he asked for. It's my favorite cake ever.

"Oh, oh, oh...bucket, Bucket, BUCKET!!!" Javi handed over the positively charming little pail that Izzy and Aiyon had painted roses on as a kind of laugh, doing his level best not to flinch when Amelia unloaded the contents of the previous night's dinner into its confines. He had practice, it wasn't that hard, but still not on easy mode yet. He palled the sides of Amelia’s hair back and rubbed her neck and shoulders as she shuddered and spat, the bulge of her belly making the position all the more uncomfortable in her vomiting up barley soup and apple juice and those disgusting candies that were supposed to space these things back more. Javi didn’t dare make a pregnancy joke when the poor girl had been getting them for two weeks straight, even in the aftermath of such a terrible surgery as a bust appendix and her good humor. He had drawn the line in the sand when Jane had come into the hospital room and made to touch Amelia’s surgical scar. As if it was for a C-Section and not the aftermath of doctors cutting into Amelia to drain out pus and infection and bits of organs failing because they hadn’t gotten to the ER fast enough after it became very clear that something was wrong. Ollie didn’t even scold him, Izzy almost applauded him, when Javi had slapped the woman’s hand away and then carried on to herd the rest of them out with the strict instructions that Amelia wasn’t to be bothered until she could go home and sleep in her own bed. And even after weeks, when Javi had wheeled her out of the ICU and had to carry her across the threshold of her apartment like some recovering Sleeping Beauty, she could barely resist giving into his fussing and bustling around. Cooking for her and helping her into the bath to help her wash off when she was still too sluggish to bring herself to move. Spitting once more into the bucket, Amelia took a deep breath as Javi took it away to empty into the toilet and looked up at the ceiling, chanting “Look up, look up,” like she’d learned when she was very small; a trick to keep from crying. “Drink up, drink up,” Javi practically cooed back, returning to his place in the bed with a bottle of rosehips and a tiny lemon cookie no bigger than a macaron, bucket swilled and dried, and put beside the bed as Amelia took a swig of the drink and bare nibble of the food. She only just seemed to keep it down before Javi was wrapped up around her like an oversized cat. “I hate being sick,” was all she could managed in the bedraggled echo of someone who had been saying very little else, save for the always honest, “Thank you,” and “I’m sorry,” appreciated by her bestfriend, but not necessary. Javi hummed and got them both comfortable, finding his phone and turning to start the playlist they’d been enjoying on repeat since it became clear that neither of them would be leaving the house for at least a week. And Amelia was so grateful.
