seal of the day: harbor seal!!!!! long awaited (at least 4 me) these seals are the most common where i live. they’re extremely common kinda all around the world, but esp coastally in the northern hemisphere. worldwide there are at most an estimated 500,000 harbor seals :0 these seals are so common and widespread that there are 5 subspecies of harbor seals. they have many different and unique patterns and colors, no seal is the exact same! also fun fact: the header picture in my profile is one i took of a harbor seal at my local aquarium! what do you think of harbor seals?

Happy Mother’s Day from your National Marine Sanctuary System! This harbor seal mom is checking in on her pup in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

If you see a harbor seal pup alone on a beach, it’s not abandoned – its mother is just out feeding so she can continue to sustain her pup. Stay back 100 yards if possible, and keep any dogs on a leash. If you approach the pup, you may spook its mother and she may not come back – keeping your distance helps keep mother and pup safe!

Adventures in the Astral #7: Testimonies of the Sea

A small collection of stories and myths believed by a pod of harbor seal selkies I've bonded with that I've heard over time talking with various members.

As I've mentioned before, every pod of selkies is different with their own tradition, beliefs and dynamics. So don't expect each one to be something selkies across the board all believe in unison. That's the beauty of the many cultures you can come across with these ocean children and I wanted to share a few as a little special something for my 100th post on this blog.

Young pups are told that they'll be spirited away by the moon if they stay up too late instead of sleeping when they should.

The gods swim in different forms and it's best to pay respect to them if seen. A dance of respect or leaving a piece of coral, some sort of gift. It's so they know we respect them and appreciate what they do to keep the sea whole and safe. Don't look that god in the eye, you can only look where they have been after they've gone.

A friend from another pod says her father's pod believes that moon coral are the eyes of the gods and as such it is forbidden to touch them.

Whisper a secret into a shell and forever it will keep in exchange for a wish. If you break your promise, your secret will be revealed to the depths. Whisper a wish into a spiral shell a shell and give it a kiss, it will come true within the next mist.

Dance on the night of a full moon and the rest of the season will be blessed. If you continue to dance each full moon, the whole of the season will be filled with little blessings.

The tides give and the tides can take what it gives away. On neap tides, we give the hunt back. So it's best not to hunt on those days in general.

New leaders of the pod eat raw shark in hopes they will be strong and courageous leaders in addition to being wise. Worry not, all of the shark is used.

The First Selkie

(told to me by a pod elder. this is just the short summarized version of what she told me.)

There was once a faerie who fell in love with a seal and they'd swim in the sea together all day long until tragically this seal was one day killed by hunters. Stirred by this faerie's mourning, the sea gods turned her seal's coat into something alive with magic allowing her to don it and turn into a seal.
