Hardknott Roman Fort, Hardknott Pass, Lake District
I've been to the fort many times but the weather on this occasion was something special; stark contrasts of bright sunshine, blue skies and snow topped peaks. It's an inspirational landscape.

Efe Gokce: Lake District England Tours
Highlights of Cumbria & the English Lake District
Explore the very best locations & views of the Lake District, Private Tour with Locals
Efe Gokce: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017, the Lake District National Park boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK, containing a picturesque collection of traditional villages, dry stone walls, ancient woodland and tranquil lakes - all presided over by the largest mountain fells in England. Famously the home of writer and conservationist Beatrix Potter, the muse of William Wordsworth and stomping grounds of Alfred Wainwright, the area has long inspired locals and visitors alike.
This tour of between one and five days aims to provide a broad overview of this magical area, as we traverse the park north to south, then east to west. Located in the heart of the Lakes, the historic market town of Ambleside makes a perfect base for our adventures, giving good access to the surrounding passes and fells. All private transport between the locations (both classic and seldom frequented) is included.

One day tour- Northern Lakes
Pickup from Oxenholme Lake District Train Station or Ambleside at a time convenient to you.
Drive north through the Central Lakes, stopping to explore the ancient Castlerigg Stone Circle, before ascending Latrigg (by car) to gain a birds-eye perspective over Keswick and the surrounding area. Our journey then continues along the eastern shores of Derwentwater, where we will visit Ashness Bridge, Surprise View and Lodore Falls before ascending the steep pass to Honister. After a brief stop at the slate mines we descend into the picturesque Buttermere valley, with stops at the eponymous lake and several hidden waterfalls, before returning east back towards Keswick along Whinlatter Pass.
For those wanting more a multi-day itinerary can be found below:
Day 2 West Lakes - Langdale, Tarn How's, Wrynose & Hardknott Passes, Roman Fort, Wast Water.
Day 3 East Lakes - Orrest Head, Kirkstone Pass, Aira Force, Ullswater.
Day 4 Central Lakes - Windermere, Ambleside, Rydal Mount, Grasmere.

Hardknott Ruins by Pete Rowbottom Via Flickr: Following on from yesterdays shot from Hardknott Roman Fort....., yes, it's Hardknott Roman Fort again!, this time looking out with an overall view of the Fort ruins looking in the opposite direction with Birker Fell on the left, down through the Eskdale Valley and out to the coast at Ravenglass. Myself, and the two others I was shooting with had a cracking time up here with the weather playing ball in as much as it didn't pour down on us somehow and gave us great dark, brooding moody skies to work with, - you can check out both of their websites here: Mike Muddyboots - www.flickr.com/photos/muddybootsuk , Brad Eide www.flickr.com/photos/58071954@N08/ There's some really interesting stuff all round the Roman Fort including one small building that used to be the bath house and sauna! Given that this is a really exposed exposed area of the lakes that gets totally battered with high winds, heavy rain, and depp snow in Winter it struck me as being a curious place to have taken a bath and sauna! It went on to say how the sauna loosened up all the dirt on the skin so that it could then be easilyscraped off with a knife.... nice !! I don't suppose you would have the need of a cooling pool afterwards though, you'd just walk outside.... not for me! Mike has also done a video vlog of our trip which he's posted up here - youtu.be/x8e8wu_TGIM - feel free to have a look and give him a follow, he's done a good job and he has the patience to do this kind of stuff, I don't, plus it would be more items for me to lose or break when outdoors, and I'm bad enough as it is :-)

I’ll bet this would be a hardship post for anyone posted there. It’s pretty bleak. Beautiful, though.

Hardknott Roman Fort
You better have lead in your pencil for this bad boy. The photos really don’t do this place justice. It must have been a pretty immense tasking to even contemplate building such a structure up here. Well worth a visit. 11/10-TommyC
We love a Roman Fort, especially one in the middle of nowhere inhabited by freely roaming sheep. Hardknott Roman Fort is on the western side of Hardknott pass, and let me tell you the drive to get here is not for the faint-hearted or nervy driver. The remains of the fort are well preserved and the site offers stunning panoramic scenery. It’s well worth the trip....if you can stomach the drive up -RoxyC
