honestly when Five is telling Viktor that he suspects Allison betrayed them in the s3 finale and includes “she killed Harlan” as one of his reasons, that speaks VOLUMES. literally nobody has cared about or even acknowledged Viktor’s grief at Harlan’s death up till that point. this was the same boy whom Viktor was ready to raise with Sissy, the closest thing he ever had to a child of his own. and until then, everyone dismissed and invalidated his pain and the level of betrayal Allison’s murder of Harlan was, as if s2 never happened. and then Five admits that he knows how important Harlan was to his brother and that Allison broke Viktor’s heart with her actions, and that alone is enough of a reason for Five to be willing to declare Allison a traitor to the family.
i mean considering how many innocent people he was willing to kill for the greater good, you’d think Harlan would never be of any importance to him. And he was initially willing to sacrifice Harlan to the Sparrows anyway. But when he saw Viktor’s genuine grief, Harlan’s life became a real factor in his distrust of Allison.
nobody can convince me Viktor isn’t still Five’s favorite sibling.

i keep seeing people questioning the umbrella’s actions over harlan and viktor defending him “why are the siblings being so unsympathetic to viktor, harlan’s like a son to him” and not excusing the rest of the umbrella’s actions, but I genuinely don’t think any of them realized/know that. Allison says “protecting him [Harlan] didn’t bring back Sissy either” when Viktor’s upset about Harlan and i think that moment shows that Allison, along with probably the rest of the Umbrellas just think Viktor’s care for Harlan is mostly just because he’s Sissy’s son, and not for Harlan’s own sake
And it makes sense, because throughout the series Viktor doesn’t really talk about himself or his relationships or feelings about things unless it’s brought up in conversation or it comes spilling out.
Season 2 is a good example of this because not only does Viktor not talk about Sissy or Harlan much on his own with the other umbrellas, Viktor has the exact same conflict with Five over compromising stuff for someone he cares about, yet Viktor does not explain why they matter to him so much or the extent of how much he cares for them, simply that they are important to him,
So it makes perfect sense the Umbrellas don’t really see Viktor’s side of things much over Harlan in s3 because they don’t have context over how much Viktor cares for Harlan.

gonna be quite fuckin real here i don’t think claire would have existed even if harlan hadn’t killed all of the mothers. would allison have even met patrick if she hadn’t been where she was when she met him? would she have been there to meet him if the sparrows were adopted instead of the umbrellas? literally not his fuckin fault.

I still am bitter about the whole plotline surrounding Harlan, and also to a smaller degree the whole confrontation between Allison and Viktor, so I guess I will postpone watching the rest of the season until I feel ready to continue.
I was pretty intrigued when it first was confirmed Allison would become darker this season, but right now, I can't quite bring myself to really sympathize with her character despite everything. At first, I did really like the direction her character took, but then the Harlan Plot happened and just... yeah, I disliked that. A lot.
But I already saw some posts discussing why people are treating Allison like a villain when Viktor did objectively worse things with a wider reach and it did make me pause and reflect on my own gut reaction to all this, and there were good arguments made about the different standards Allison and Viktor are held to.
And I think the reason why I at least have a harder time liking Allison than Viktor in season one comes down to one big difference between their plotline, which is intent.
I think a good comparison are their two big fights in season one and three, that I think really parallel each other.
Viktor's actions, while much more disastrous and should be held accountable for, were presented as made in the heat of high emotions, in the middle of an emotional breakdown, and for example the 'slitting Allison's throat' incident made clear that Viktor never would have done that if he had taken the time to think before act and he showed immediate regret the moment it happened.
In the season three fight, Allison acts and speaks with the clear intent to hurt Viktor as much as possible - her using her power against Viktor is framed as deliberate, she doesn't pause to be shocked by the outburst and doesn't regret it. The comment about the basement didn't slip out in the heat of the moment either but instead obviously carefully picked as an immediate way of causing more pain for Viktor (the way she takes time to close in on him, almost whispering the words directly in his ear).
Though, there is also a vital difference in why S1!Allison and S3!Viktor were blamed and attacked during their fights - Allison, the moment she realizes what she'd done, immediately comes clean to Viktor and she doesn't hide her mistakes. S3!Viktor meanwhile deliberately hid an important information from Allison and still tries to justify his decisions during the confrontation. Prior to this, they both were the only ones in the family trying to help the other (Allison trying to include and bond with Viktor in S1 while no one else looked out for him, Viktor comforting Allison about her daughter and trying to get the briefcase back while no one else seems interested in doing so. Ironically, despite being the ones that tried the most, they both also get blamed the most about the trauma and situation the other is in).
So, yeah, a lot of similarities but pretty important distinctions in the details.
I don't think we can objectively judge which ones worse or more in wrong, because everyone has a different view on how important a role intent should play in a moral judgement. If you consider the consequences of their actions more important, Viktor is less sympathetic. If you consider the intent behind their actions to be more important, Allison is less sympathetic. Viktor's worst actions are made impulsively, Allison's are calculated.
Also, I just liked and found Harlan much more sympathetic than Pogo which is why Allison's murder appears worse to me than Viktor's. This also comes down to intent, though this time the intent of their victims. Pogo helped and enabled Reginald's abuse and manipulation of Viktor, fully aware what he's doing, while Harlan lost control of his powers when his mother died. And like with Allison and Viktor, one character did terrible things with intent while the other did much worse with long-reaching consequences but accidentally.
As it turns out, I am more preoccupied with how they ended up making these decisions instead of the consequences which I think has a bit to do with that I prioritize the emotional aspect in characters more.
I'm not going to deny their degree of relatability plays into this as well, Viktor being neglected and ignored hits closer to home than Allison losing her husband and daughter because I have not yet experienced a loss to that degree. That again boils down to personal preference.
Again, this isn't written to say one character is more redeemable than the other or one is more villainous, but just to showcase there are many reasons why someone might like one character's corruption arc more and/or is able to forgive their actions more than the other despite their similarities.
While I have different opinions, others do consider Viktor's actions more unforgivable and you know what, that's fair.

The Umbrella Academy really said: "How do we make 'House of the Rising Sun' an even more heart-breaking song? Ah, yes--play it over a montage of Harlan's childhood as he never learns how to control his powers, making him and his mom, Sissy, constantly move until Sissy dies of cancer and he has a meltdown in the hospital. And then, play it again - this time, a cover by actor Jeremy Renner - when we learn that Harlan's meltdown ended up killing the would-be mothers of the Umbrella students!"

tbh i’m surprised at the amount of people i’ve seen say that five should have given allison a talking to, rather than viktor. why would five, leader of team kill that old man, berate allison for doing what he wanted in the first place? why would five come down on allison for killing an innocent person to prevent the apocalypse, when he himself has made a career out of doing just that? lmao

*shoots up in bed in the middle of the night* DEATH PATTERNS IN TUA!!!
So obviously everyone knows that each season has similarities to the others (apocalypse, taking place over ~a week) but I haven’t seen anyone bring this one up yet. Each season has had a True Death and a Fake Death.
The True Death happens to a major side character in the middle of the season (Eudora: 1.04, Elliott: 2.06, Harlan: 3.05), and the Fake Death happens to one of the siblings near the end of the season (Allison: 1.08, Ben: 2.09, Luther: 3.09).
The True Death is true. The character is dead and gone.
The Fake Death is fake- the character always comes back. I’m using that term pretty loosely, obviously, because, although I thought they killed Allison the first time I watched S1, she barely goes to the brink of death, Ben was already dead and just goes into the light, and Luther actually dies but comes back. However, they’re all connected in the way that we think that these characters Are Not Coming Back, but then they do.
I think this pattern could lead to some fun, but not really solid, predictions/theories. I think the True Death will be nearly impossible to guess, 2/3 times it’s a character we’ve met that season (although does that really count for S1 because we’re meeting all the characters that season?). The only real options we have for True Death theories at this point are Abigail, Ray, and Claire (and, I guess, technically Reginald, but he’s probably going to be the main villain again).
Frankly, I think the Fake Death will be hard to guess too. We can eliminate 3/7 siblings on the list, but there’s no reason they won’t give one a second Fake Death, and there’s not really anything tying the Fake Death characters’ stories from each season together (I’m sure if you go full conspiracy theorist you can find connections there, but I don’t think the similarities are intended).
Anyways, this was just a fun pattern I noticed and wanted to share.

Well Five was certainly right, if Viktor had brought Sissy and Harlan out of their timeline then the new 2019 would be different and there would have been a duplicate set of Umbrellas running around and who knows what else Harlan would have/could have changed as a young kid arriving in a new place (literally 56 years newer) with powers he couldn't control

THE HATE ALLISON GETS ON REDDIT OMG 😭 AND THEY DO NOT STOP THERE , THEY START GOING AFTER HER LOOKS AND EVERYTHING. EMMY RAVER IS GORGEOUS?!?!? STFU.
not a Viktor hater but come on , these are the same people who preach about Viktor and then are so unnecessarily harsh on Allison.
If SHE HADN'T KILLED HARLAN HE WOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN BY THE KUGELBLITZ anyways. NOT TO MENTION THE MOST IMPORTANT REVEAL THAT SHE THOUGHT HE WOULD JUST COME BACK WHEN THEY MAKE THEIR NEXT JUMP AND NOTHING IS EVER REAL. NOT JUSTIFYING HER ACTIONS BUT A REALITY CRISIS IS WHAT SHE WAS FACING. U GO AROUND AND SAY VIKTOR WAS NOT HIMSELF IN S1 BUT CAN'T SEE THE SAME FOR HER
Of course her looks got brought into it. She's a woman. That means her looks get brought into just about anything. And since she's also black, the argument is weighted against her. The good news is that this gif exists to express how I feel about that (and prove wrong anyone who thinks she's less than radiant):
Tumblr media
Hate Allison all you want. But the moment you fling mud at Emmy over your Allison hate, you become very silly. And no one takes your opinion seriously when you are a silly person.
But also: Harlan might or might not have been kugelblitzed, but that's not even the point. The point is that the Sparrows demanded him and were always going to kill him.
Jayme and Alphonso are killed by Harlan. Ben goes to Reg, who tells him he can turn this to his advantage by demanding Harlan be turned over. That's what Ben does.
Let's say Harlan hadn't told Allison he killed their mothers. Let's say the Umbrellas went to the Sparrows and explained that Harlan no longer has any power, so he is no longer a threat. Do you think that would have been enough for Ben? Because Ben isn't looking for a threat to be nullified. He's trying to prove he's in charge. And the Umbrellas did not do what he told them to do. That, right there, is more important to Ben than anything. He's not going to agree to a ceasefire until he is obeyed. And at this point, Viktor has probably told Harlan to run for his life, so they don't even have him anymore. I think Ben would demand they go after and capture Harlan anyway because "that was the deal." Not only was it his demand of the Umbrellas, but it was his "deal" with Reginald as well. In the meantime, more and more people are dying, and instead of saving Harlan's life, we've just briefly postponed his death at the cost of many others.
That Harlan was never going to survive isn't even the point of what Allison did. If all she wanted was Harlan's death, Allison could have just turned him over to the Sparrows. The only reason she killed Harlan was to hurt Viktor. So while I'd place the bulk of the moral responsibility for Harlan's death on Reginald and Ben, the fact that Allison deliberately inflicted that level of pain on someone she loved (whee, disorganized attachment patterns) is something she alone holds the blame for. And that is a lot of pain.
Reg has initiated a chain of events that led to his children being torn apart. Story of their lives.
