Welcome to Harringrove Flip Reverse It 2024!

Are you the sort of person who likes to be nifty with your fan creations? Do you enjoy subverting prompts? Does the thought of a challenge fill you with glee?

This is the event for you!

Harringrove Flip Reverse It is an event taking place the first week of July (Monday 1st - Sunday 7th). It’s very easy (and fun) to play!

Every day during that week, you’ll be given five prompts: fluff, angst, nsfw, sfw and trope subversion. Sounds simple? Well, it is… but there’s a catch!

For each prompt you decide to fill, you’ll be expected to Flip Reverse It! In other words, you must make your fluff prompts angsty, and your angst prompts fluffy. Your nsfw prompts should be safe for work, and as for your sfw prompts… enough said ;)

The trope subversion prompts will give you a very common, possibly even overused prompt… and it’s your job to subvert it, in any way you want. Interpret the prompt any way you like, except the traditional one.

You can do as many or as few prompts as you like, no sign-up required! Make sure you tag @harringrove-flip-reverse-it in your prompt fill so we can reblog it here too.

Fluff:  Take the traditional tooth-rotting fluff… and make it angsty! We’re talking days at the beach that end in disaster, hot chocolate with marshmallows that turn out to be poisoned, sweet little moments that break our goddamn hearts.

Angst:  It looks like it should hurt, but it doesn’t! These prompts may seem dark and whumpy, but they should fill the heart with joy and delight, no angst allowed!

NSFW: These prompts may look filthy, but in fact they could be read by the most innocent of angels with nary a blush!

SFW:  By contrast… somehow these gentle ideas have become sullied by porn, and there’s no turning back!

Trope Subversion:  These tropes may be overused, but it’s your job to interpret them in a non-traditional way. Maybe they share a bed, but not with each other! Maybe their first kiss was with someone else! It can be anything EXCEPT the usual way of interpreting the prompt.

You can write about anything, as long as it’s just a little bit spooky, this is kind of a Halloween big bang 🥰

Your fics cannot be beta-read by you, because sometimes people don’t notice things in their own writing no matter how many times they re-read the piece, but it can be beta read by someone who’s not a part of this event! (ex. Friend, family member)

Billy catches himself perving on the guy who runs down his block every morning. It's those floppy shorts. Billy’s not even a leg guy, but there's something so shapely about them. They leave the impression that they were flawlessly sculpted in clay. Here is youth and beauty as can only be imagined and never had- except there they are gliding by, holding up a nice handful of ass. Billy's not a creep so about the time his brain starts spitting poetry over a strangers ass is exactly the moment he decides to get on with his morning and leaves the window. But he starts taking his coffee by the window more often, just to see perfection run by, because it's not a bad way to start a morning all considered.

One day they communicate. The runner stops outside Billy’s window to take a drink from a plastic bottle and notices Billy standing there behind the glass. Gives a silent good morning in the form of a neighborly nod and an awkward wave. Billy raises his mug, all howdy neighbor. And as long legs carry that bouncing ass away he thinks, ‘fuck I need to hit that’. There are a few obstacles to this new goal of his. It's the 90s but these things still have to be approached carefully. He starts looking for signs, because it’s something to do. Would a gay man wear his sweatband like that?

The shorts get shorter. Tighter. Sometimes the runner will stop at the corner for a breather and a stretch. That little shit knows what he's doing. He's totally gay and asking for a spanking to boot. That’s a good day. Billy whistles on his way to work and doesn’t even get mad at the terrible drivers on his commute. But then the very next day something new happens. The runner isn’t alone. There’s a girl with him. Girlfriend? Wife? Fuck. They seem close. She's hanging on his arm and laughing her ass off. The fuck is her problem? Nobody is that funny.

Billy's mood has soured but it picks up when the runner meets his eye as they are passing his window. He gives Billy a shy wave before tugging his little friend along. People do have platonic friends of the opposite sex, Billy remembers. Movement catches his eye, and he has to lean a little to see further down the street but the girl is walking backward, a step or two behind her friend, waving her arms in the air. When she sees that she has Billy's attention she points at the runners back and makes the call me gesture with her other hand. And just in case Billy somehow failed to get the message she makes an enthusiastic thrusting motion. Billy nearly chokes on his coffee. Right. Not his girlfriend then.

I think we need more culture shock Billy moving from city life to small town life. 

Like the first time the gang takes him to the town fair and Billy is in utter horror when he finds out the cute cows and pigs have numbers on them to be sold and slaughtered. 

The complete outrage Billy faces every-time Steve just leaves his front door or car unlocked and Steve tells him “The people are good here Billy”.

Billy meeting his breaking point many times when he forgets the entire town shuts down at 8pm. Not only does he go hungry and cold, but he also now only has his car as sanctuary if needed. And if he wants beer, he must pre plan because you cannot buy it on Sunday.

The complete dismay when the high school has an “anything but a car day” and people are driving around Hawkins High in actual tractors. 

Billy gets a knot in his neck every time he orders a soda, and the waitress laughs with a “oh you mean a pop”?

He thinks he may run away when Steve asks him if he wants to go see the show choir perform. Apparently, it’s a big deal around here.

It does come with some good though. Like the girls need to be “courted” which makes it easy for Billy to take them on a date just to say they aren’t worth it to wait for sex. He likes that everywhere he goes he is greeted with “Hello” and then “Have a good day”, and maybe Steve is right and the people are good because when he is a few cents short for cigs. The front worker Betty slides him the pack without a second thought. With every essay he writes or test he takes the teachers actually take the time to compliment Billy’s work. When he gets pulled over a few times for being too reckless, instead of handcuffs and a ticket he is told to slow down and to be safe. And honestly the whole courting thing isn’t even that bad if it is for a certain pretty boy.

“Shit, that’s Billy,” someone says over the walky talkie. Steve can’t make out who it is, but his stomach drops with the realization: The person who he hit. Who stumbled out of that burning car. It’s Billy. The radio is in his hand before he can even think of what to say. “We have to get that thing out of him!” is all he manages before he jumps back into the car and speeds towards the mall.

The past few days flash before his mind. Billy’s unusual absence from teasing Steve at the beginning of his shifts at Scoops. The lack of calls in the evenings. Granted, Steve was distracted by the whole Russian base under the mall thing. But things are falling into place and he does not like the conclusion he comes to.

It’s one thing to imagine what his boyfriend might feel, possessed by a terrifying monster. It’s another thing to finally see Billy, covered in sweat and blood and dark veins, his face twisted into that same tightly wound rigor he’s only had when he thought his dad would find them out. In his eyes, there’s only fear.

Steve knows: The monster wants them dead. And he decides, when he watches it approach, that he’s not going to watch Billy die. When Billy’s eyes land on him, his expression cracks and the panic bleeds through, blatant and raw for everyone to see.

Hi!

This is the official blog page for harringrovemovember! This is an event co-run by @intothedysphoria and @hargrove-mayfields along with support from @jaylikesrainbowtigers. This is a harringrove event which hopes to spread awareness about men and mental health, particularly men from marginalised communities.

The event is running from the 20th to the 26th of November and accepts fic, art, edits, ect. All works will be accepted as long as they’re harringrove and stick to the theme of men and mental health

Here is the prompt list for anybody who hasn’t seen it (edit made by @hargrove-mayfields)

We’ll post more info as the date gets closer, including what works the mods are not comfortable including in the event and how you can get more involved with the event if you’re interested (e.g if anybody would be interested in an event discord).

Please keep in mind that this is an event run by autistic moderators, so tone indicators when sending asks and patience with the mods if you contact them on a low spoons day would be appreciated. Furthermore, any ableism towards this event or the moderators will be dealt with swiftly and appropriately. Also it goes without saying but there is a zero tolerance policy on misogyny, racism, any type of queerphobia, transphobia, classism, antisemitism, islamophobia, ableism, xenophobia, ect. This is an event which is made to be inclusive to everyone and any bullying or mean spirited behaviour made towards another blog participating in the event will not be tolerated.

Hiya- we’ve been working on these for a few weeks but the disabled Billy and Steve prompts are now officially here! We’re not quite ready to decide on a week yet but hopefully people can get a bit more of a feel for the vibe of the event. The prompts are quite flexible so you can just work off the primary prompt and ignore the more specific prompt if they don’t really gel with what you want to do but hopefully you’ll all enjoy these! We tried to make the language as accessible and disability inclusive as we possibly could so that the prompts aren’t too confusing but if you would like some clarity, you can message @intothedysphoria or @hargrove-mayfields about any questions you have.

I think that’s it! If you didn’t get a chance to vote on the initial posts about the event and the server but want to be involved, you can absolutely take part when July comes or request a place on the server by messaging our personal tumblrs!
