I love all the movies honestly, but

I'm not gonna lie, I was surprised to see Greyback turn into smoke and fly in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Whether or not he was a Dark Wizard, he was never inducted into the Death Eater circle because of his "half-breed" status and Voldemort would never have taught him anything that would put him in the same status as Wizardkind.

Yes, Greyback is a Wizard (noted that he was a Wizard first before he was turned), but Voldemort, much like the rest of the world, would have demoted him from Wizard to half-breed.

And even in the books, the only other person other than Voldemort that we knew who had the power of flight was Snape.

I'd wager Bellatrix would know, but we just never read any of that or seen it in the movies

jo was so reluctant to write more women in harry potter that she made it canon that the lily's only friend was snape.

we see girlfriends around her but no one ever mentions who they were. mary macdonald? she was probably just a roomate, like lavender was to hermione.

no one in the 90s tells harry how they used to be best friends with lily. everytime remus or sirius brought up friendship, they only spoke of james.

what gives? in fact, in almost the whole series, no one is even checking for lily.

i think this isn't noticed or why the impact of snape's plot twist concerning lily isn't treated as it should because of the films twisting what is and isn't canon. she's mentioned a lot more in the films that the books. the books emphasis is always on james.

lupin saying lily was at one point the only person looking out for him? movie. in the book when harry mentions hearing her literal death scream lupin just says "yOu HEaRd JaMeS?!" he completely ignores lily. francis the fish and slughorn? made up for the movie.

so when snape gives harry his memories, we see her properly. something no one has ever done before in the series. he ironically ends up doing this twice. it's also snape who shows both james and lily for who they really were, real people vs everyone's rose tinted "do not speak ill of the dead" renditions.

Who among us hasn't dreamed of a magical dress? A piece of clothing that has magical properties, like the cloak of invisibility in the Harry Potter books. Or a dress that grows (or shrinks) by itself, depending on how your body looks (and feels) on any given day. I'd give a lot for clothes like that, seriously.

Claire Fraser has not only magically travelled back in time to meet her 'dashing Highlander', she also has such a magical wardrobe (although she doesn't brag about it!). I think the comparison of the pictures says more than words can ever say. Season 3 vs. season 4.

i'm rewatching the harry potter movies because i'm sick and trying figure out why they made the absolutely baffling choice to have every single spell have the same effect (target thrown 2-3 away as if from an explosion). the second movie is particularly egregious, especially the duelling club. rictumsempra (spell that canonically makes you laugh hysterically, very easy to make happen in movie)? thrown across the floor, no laughing. expelliarmus? thrown across the floor. serpensortia? thrown across the floor, snake appears.

also i wish madam pomfrey would show up and fix the rib i cracked coughing because ouch.

100%, it's always annoyed me because the way magic is used in these books is often so funny and absurd (remember Lupin sending a chewing-gum up Peeves's nose? lol). I get how some of these effects might have been jarring on screen, audiences respond to things differently etc., but the magic in the Potter films is just excessessively bland as a result. The worst offender was probably the Dumbledore vs Voldemort duel in OotP, which is incredibly dull compared to the descriptions we get in the book.

(I'll give Yates some points for having encouraged actors to develop a personal "wand wielding style", which at least gave elegance to something that could have easily looked very silly. But at the same time Yates's fear of silliness really weakened his production, you can see how the sets and costumes suffered from it. I feel like there could have been a better middle ground than all that cold sepia nonsense, but it was trendy at the time - see: Nolanisation.)

Also, some characters's personality really suffer from this. One of the ways Hermione's intelligence is shown (rather than told) is her creative thinking in battle; she uses her environment a lot, unlike Harry or Ginny who have "signature" spells (Harry's Expelliarmus, Ginny's Bat-Boogey Hex). Hermione will do things like turn a tapestry to stone so that the person chasing her will crash into it, or make an Erumpent's horn explode knowing no one will have recognised it and known to stay away.

This is one of the things i'd try to work on and show better if i was working on the Max show, especially because you know audiences would be into it. People enjoy when characters have individual fighting styles. You have to be careful not to get full video gamey about it ofc (this isn't DnD), but a touch more than what it was in the movies definitely wouldn't hurt.

The only one I can remember is Rose and Scorpius from Harry Potter lol. I was obsessed with them when I was like 12, I even made like a story with like the next gen kids (before the Cursed Child released). Then I paired up Albus with an OC and they became my favorite ship instead LMAO. I'm not that into the fandom anymore but I do still think about them sometimes. (Also to be clear I do not support J.K Rowling AT ALL, even created a metamorphmagus trans lady as a teacher in my story to piss her off lol)

Comic book series Fables! Just finished vol. 14 today. Only 57 issues to finish the original run lol. The Telltale video game The Wolf Among Us is based on these comics if you were curious! (that's what got me into comics, now I work at a comic book store LMAO)

Decided to watch The Mitchells VS The Machines again (yes recently I've only been watching A LOT of animated movies fjhjksshjfk) and it's such a great movie. I totally had forgotten about the Furby scene (don't ask) and I almost cried of laughter.

Favorite place in the world you’ve visited?

I haven't been many places truthfully. I loved hiking near Niagara Falls and also hiking in the Smokies near Gatlinburg. (I'm going to Alaska later this year so that will likely take the cake for me!)

Something you’re proud of yourself for?

Working 3 jobs while also caring for a terminally ill parent. Not to get too sad, but yeah, that was a time.

Favorite books?

Oof, gonna age myself with this. The Harry Potter will always hold a special place in my heart even though it has aged terribly. Because I am Furniture by Thalia Chatlas made a big impact on me as a teenager. One Flew Over The Cukoo's Nest by Ken Kasey is a favorite classic. Recently Dead Inside by Chandler Morrison kept me very entertained with pure shock value (although I just finished The Slob last night and it by far takes the cake for the most disgusting thing I've ever read)

Something that makes your heart happy when thinking about it?

When I think about the people I choose to surround myself with. I am a very open person with those I love. Once someone is in my inner circle I am a no boundary kinda person. Let's cut the small talk and bare all our trauma and then tease each other about it. Let's rot on the sofa together. It makes my heart happy to know that I have people I can be like this with.

Favorite thing about your culture?

...what culture... I could say there's a certain culture of the American Midwest that i love. Mainly the 'midwest goodbye' where you stand in the front door chatting for way too long, then in the driveway then in your car with the window rolled down. Also, ever had a midwestern dessert salad?????

When did you join the HBO War fandom? What was the first show you watched?

Well, my brother is older than me and he was very much ww2 obsessed. So watched Band of Brothers way younger than I probably should've. Probably when I was like 8? When I got into my career there was this song at work that would play and it felt so oddly nostalgic until one day I realized it sounded the intro credit music for Band of Brothers. Then it was put on Netflix and it was all down hill from there. Very different to watch again as an adult vs what I remembered from my childhood.

Have you read any of Easy Company’s books? If so, which ones were your favorite?

I just finished Dick Winters' memoir not that long ago! I think I'll read Shifty's next!

Favorite HBO War character and your favorite moment with them?

Everyone in b.o.b is my precious baby. See that generic white man? Yep, thats my child. Honestly though there are certain quotes from various characters that just scratches my brain. Buck with: "Your ass?!" Webster with: "You ignorant, servile scum! What the fuck are we doing here?" and the cadence in which he says "Don't salute the Germans!" Liebgott with "Hershey Bar!" Winters with: "What's that? A piece of paper? I dont wanna see another piece of paper" and Speirs with: "You talk to an officer you say 'sir' " (totally not because it made me feel some type of way)

Do you make content for any fandoms, if so; what sort of content?

Favorite actor/actress and your favorite film of theirs?

hm....that's hard to pick a favorite. Meryl Streep is always delightful, as is Gillian Anderson. Natalie Portman? Keira Knightly? ok, ok, maybe I should list a man...James McAvoy. Jack Nicholson. I dunno, I don't like picking favorites.

Favorite quote/s that you wish to share with others?

"I paint self portraits because I am so often alone...Because I am the person I know best." This Frido Kahlo quote really sticks with me because I feel like I can relate to being isolated and enjoying spending so much time on my own. I am my best companion and draw from my own experiences and emotions.

Random fact your mutuals/followers don’t know about you?

I am a licensed massage therapist and I work with patients with chronic pain and injuries. I love my job and my patients even though it is a very draining profession.

If you’re a writer, do you need a beta reader (say yes so I can be your beta reader 🤭)?

I am a writer! I want to say that I'm open to beta readers but I am also simultaneously afraid of others reading my work and embarrassed that people might not like it. That being said, I am working on a multi part Winnix fic rn.

🌊 Slash Ships to Get to Know Me ⚓️

**Rules**: Name at least five (no upper limit) slash (M/M) ships you love. Each from a different fandom.

OK, so this little exercise took longer than I expected, because for me, there are many different categories of ship-love. The list I've compiled below is a reflection of my discovery journey with M/M ships, in order of significance. Some of them I have outgrown but left on the list as a mark of how deep of an impression they left on my psyche. I've only written fic for a few of them, but who knows, maybe others will pop up on my AO3 master list in the future.

Harry Potter - Drarry

This was the OG slash ship for me, although I would come to discover Wolfstar many years later. Both ships are significant for me, but since I can only give one ship per fandom, Drarry it is! The majority of my fic efforts have been in this fandom, in case you couldn’t already tell. 😉

Velvet Goldmine - Arthur Stuart/Curt Wild

This was another OG for me, being one of the first films I watched that centered gay relationships in a meaningful way (in my young adult mind, anyhow). I probably started as a Brian Slade/Curt Wild shipper, but I’ve since come to realize that I identify way more with Arthur/Curt. I also wrote a fic for this ship.

Brokeback Mountain - Jack Twist/Ennis Del Mar

This film quite literally broke my heart when I saw it in the theater as a young adult. So much so that I haven’t been able to watch it since, although I did later read the short story it was based on. I am glad that media representation of non-traumatic gay relationships has improved since then, because man, this one was tragic. Not to mention Heath Ledger dying just a few years later.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda - Simon/Bram 

On the flip side, this is the most adorable, positive depiction of young gay love that I’ve read so far. Possibly my favorite YA high school age ship to date, at least as far as the books go (I haven’t watched the TV series yet).

Our Flag Means Death - Stede Bonnet/Ed Teach

This TV show endeared itself to me in so many ways, but I think the most enduring love I have is for these two pirate lads. Can’t wait to see what the next season brings for them!

Hannibal – Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter

This ship fucked me up in a few different ways, not least because one of them likes to snack on people. However, the sexual tension is undeniable, and I wish they’d done this ship more justice than they ultimately did in the TV series.

Kill Your Darlings - Lucien Carr/Allen Ginsberg

Speaking of getting fucked up by ships… this one had the added layer of being based on a murderous true story, although I would say the relationship between these two college students was highly embellished, and to simmering effect. I also love that this was the first film project Daniel Radcliffe dived into while finishing up the Potter series, after honing his theater chops in Equus.

Amadeus - Mozart/Salieri

And now speaking of Equus and drama based on historical characters… I don’t think I picked up right away on how intimately linked these two characters were, but I think it was a big reason why I loved this film/play so damned much when I was growing up. The final scene between them is so utterly *chef’s-kiss*, I don’t think I have a choice but to ship them now.

Dark Is Rising series - Will Stanton/Bran Davies

Like Amadeus, this ship snuck up on me, probably because I was quite young when I first read this YA fantasy book series. As an adult, I love the idea of these two besties getting together years later, so much so that I wrote a fic for them.

Call Me By Your Name - Elio/Oliver

I have mixed feelings about this one. The film gutted me, and I tore through the book, but ultimately I feel like it was more the coming-of-age and fleeting-summer-romance angles that got to me than the actual characters, as compellingly portrayed as they were. I’m not holding out for a sequel film, given the controversy surrounding Armie Hammer, but I might eventually read the sequel book.

Heartstopper - Charlie/Nick

Pure, adorable fluff. I don’t have quite as many feels over this one as Simon/Bram, but watching the first season and the development of their romance was sheer delight.

So there’s a rumour circulating that Warner Bros is going to make a Dumbledore solo show and like… okay. I don’t know if this is legit. I’m seeing people say it is, I’m seeing people say it’s not. I just need to say this because I’m so tired.

I have such a complex relationship with this franchise because on the one hand, the first film was so important to me - it got me through a time that had the stress of me starting university, my grandmother’s cancer battle, my grandmother’s eventual death from cancer, mental illness etc etc., plus I love the characters from the first film/the cast. On the other hand, however, I don’t think the second and third films have been of the same standard, I don’t agree with certain choices made (Bunty being introduced and being the worst cringiest character, where the fUCK is Tina, the films being about Dumbledore and Grindelwald instead of, oh I don’t know, the FUCKING FANTASTIC BEASTS etc), and on top of that it’s all gone downhill in the production/behind the scenes department with the controversy of hiring Johnny Depp, the firing of Johnny Depp, JKR being gross, the actor who plays Abernathy now in jail for sexual assault, and then whatever the actual fuck is going on with Ezra Miller… the longer it goes on, the more it feels like this franchise is cursed.

Here’s the thing: the reason a lot of people - especially myself - loved the original Fantastic Beasts was because of the new characters we knew very little about going in. The new film series was sold to us as being about the “main four”, meaning Newt, Tina, Queenie and Jacob; we were also interested in characters like Seraphina, Credence, Graves etc. Hell, I was interested to know what happened to Modesty! The reason we love the first film is because of those new characters, a lot of us who were adults saw ourselves in the main four adults, especially Newt and Tina.

You see, the problem with the second and third films is that those characters - the ones that in interviews and promotion for FBAWTFT were made such a big deal of - have been demoted to background in favour of Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

Hear me out: in between the first and second films, we knew we were getting more Grindelwald as well as seeing Dumbledore - we knew that, we were expecting it and were even excited for it to a certain degree. But the films are called “Fantastic Beasts” because that’s the title of Newt’s book - he’s the protagonist, it’s HIS story. Instead, Newt is now a side character, and the other three main characters from the first film are even less important - we don’t know any more about them than we did in the first film quite frankly. Worst of all, Tina, Newt’s canon future spouse and the female lead, had a total of two minutes at the most in the most recent film. The films are no longer about magical beasts or Newt - they’re just retcons of Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s story that was already told in Harry Potter.

Here’s my gripe: if WB and Rowling wanted to make a spin off series about Dumbledore and Grindelwald, they should have just done that from the very start. Why bother making a film selling Newt/Tina/Jacob/Queenie as the leads if you’re going to push them aside for Dumbledore and Grindelwald? Why bother making the four leads so likeable if you’re not going to write them properly, if they’re just there to prop up Dumbledore and Grindelwald?

If I had known in 2016 that Newt and the gang were going to be demoted and pushed aside for the retconning of Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s story, I frankly wouldn’t have bothered personally. I know people like those characters, good for them, but for those of us who fell in love with those four main characters, it’s unfair and upsetting.

Because of this, WB/JKR now have the problem of fans of the main four wanting their favourite characters to be focused on vs the Grindeldore stans wanting their faves to be the focus. If we do get more films (and frankly, I will be very surprised if we do because this franchise is NOT doing well), fans of Newt/Tina/Jacob/Queenie will be very disappointed if we just get yet another Dumbledore flick, and Grindeldore fans will be disappointed if all of a sudden Dumbledore and Grindelwald take a backseat while Newt and the gang get the spotlight. Either way, some fans are probably going to be pissed and complain.

With all due respect to Jude Law (who I have no problem with, by the way) I don’t want a Dumbledore solo show set between SoD and Harry Potter. I cannot think of anything I’d like less quite frankly. We know his story. I want to focus on the other characters again.

Even from a money/ratings point of view, making a Dumbledore solo show seems silly. The graph below compares the box office of all three Beasts films, and you can see quite clearly that the domestic box office has been getting worse and worse with each film since the first one. For the difference between CoG and SoD, sure, you could claim COVID played a part, but that doesn’t explain the extreme drop between the first two films.

It should speak volumes that the first film - the only one of the three not to feature Dumbledore, the one that focuses the most on Newt and the others - is the one that has done the best. If there’s going to be a spin off show about any characters in this franchise, it should either be about Newt and the other new characters who haven’t had any story development (Tina, Lally, Theseus, to a lesser degree Jacob/Queenie since they’ve actually had a relationship onscreen) or even a spin off of a character from Harry Potter that hasn’t had the chance for a story.

I’m just so tired. I fell in love with the first movie for a number of reasons, but arguably the most important is the fact that it gave me an autistic role model to look up to - when I was in the process of seeking a diagnosis, seeing that the hero of such a well known franchise that I loved was autistic, that he was played in a positive and non-judgemental way, made me feel so much more comfortable with being diagnosed. There’s rarely any canon autistic representation on screen, let alone representation that’s NOT negative or stereotypical, and seeing the one character who’s canonically autistic and not a total joke being pushed to the background is just… exhausting. It’s painful.

It’s also upsetting because the character from the first film I related to the most, the one I looked up to and has been played by an actress I look up to, is now a glorified extra. When I watched the first film, I related to Tina Goldstein so much, more than any other character in the whole Wizarding World, and the fact that she’s now just a cameo role is heartbreaking; during that time where I was struggling with uni, my nan’s illness/death, bullying etc, I took comfort in cosplaying as Tina, in seeing my personality and traits represented in her, and also felt inspired to continue on and better myself. While I also love the other characters (especially Newt), Tina was the one that immediately spoke to me and made me go “that’s ME!”.

This isn’t even about me wanting to see my ship (Newtina) get buckets of content anymore, I just want them to have SOMETHING to do either together or as individuals. And to be honest, I’m not certain that we’ll get that because it wouldn’t shock me if there were no more Beasts films at this point. I’m not sure if this rumoured show (if it IS true, anyway) is supposedly going to replace the fourth and fifth films after the disappointing box office of the second and third films, or if it’s intended to be in addition to the remaining films, but either way… I’m just tired and fed up. I’m not even active in this fandom anymore, and it still hurts and makes me wish I hadn’t bothered with that first film because it makes me feel like I’ve wasted my time quite frankly; I can only imagine how much worse I would feel if I was still as obsessive about this franchise as I was in 2017/2018.

I think I understand what are you trying to say. the reason why Clerith will never be end game is the same reason why Cloud will never lose to Sephiroth in the final battle because he slips on a banana peel. that may happen in real life but it suck as a story.

Basically this yeah. Not just because it sucks as a story, but also because it's not set-up as that kind of story. There are stories where the villain wins, and sometimes the villain wins or loses by something as innocent as a banana peel by virtue of dramatic irony, but that's not the kind of story FFVII seems to be telling. In the book of the lord of the rings, the reason the ring is finally destroyed is literally just because Gollum slips. But that slip is still the result of forshadowing throughout the books combined with the themes of the story. No one could destroy the ring through strength of will, yet in the end, the pity of Bilbo ruled the fate of many. Frodo told Gollum that if he were to try to take the ring Frodo would command him to throw himself into the fire. And so the ring does end, destroyed by people fighting over it, in the end evil destroys itself.

Ultimately Sephiroth will lose, we understand this, not just because of set-up, but because we loosely understand the type of story this is. I am going to borrow a part of insanehobbits rundown of the LTD, which you can find here, because I think they said it perfectly already. They point out that there are two different types of narratives.

Messy narratives are ones I would define as stories that try to illuminate something about the human condition, but may not leave the audience feeling very good by the end of it. The protagonists, while not always anti-heroes, don’t always exhibit the kind of growth we’d like, don’t always learn their lessons, probably aren’t the best role models. The endings are often ambivalent, ambiguous, and leaves room for the audience to take away from it what they will. This is the category I would put art films and prestige cable dramas.

Clean narratives are where I would categorize most popular forms of entertainment. Not that these characters necessarily lack nuance, but whatever flaws are portrayed are something to be overcome by the end of story. The protagonists are characters you’re supposed to want to root for

I'd argue that Messy vs Clean are just two opposing elements on a spectrum of different ways to catagorize stories, but what the important take-away is that stories in general have a "type". We can all recognize a certain type of story and when an element of the story doesn't fit the type that causes a whiplash effect, it causes the story, or the feel of the story, to become disjointed. There is a reason we expect graphic violence, blood, nudity, and incest in game of thrones while the same things would constitute a tonal disconnect in Harry Potter. And it's the same reason why we all knew that in the end Harry Potter would have a happy ending while with Game of Thrones that wasn't that certain.

Because there is a thing that I like to call thematic congruency. By which I mean that there are certain events and concepts simply don't mash well together. The same thing goes for narrative congruency and atmospheric congruency. An example of thematic incongruency would be this. Cloud has an alter ego based on Zack, Zack is a Soldier first class, Cloud is basically a nobody. In order to fulfill the heroes journey Cloud has to accept the past, and who he really is. In order to actually defeat Sephiroth he needs to stop living a lie, and stop living a fantasy. There are also two girls, one that is intricately tied to his real identity, that of the nobody. And one that is intricately tied to fantasy alter ego, she is both the girlfriend of the person that persona is based on, as well as an actual fantasy girl from an ancient magical race.

Now if Clouds thematic road to happiness is to accept who he really is, then in order to stay consistent he should also choose to be with the girl who is narratively linked to that real self. While there is no direct causal link that concretely prevents him from ending up with the fantasy girl, it would still be incongruent with the messages, themes, and even general atmosphere that all tangentially correlate to form a coherent whole, aka, the identity of the story. And a story without an identity isn't likely to capture people hearts.

Just for future reference I want to be sure I’m not stepping over any bounds when I send an ask for a fandom that may or may not be a good memory for you. Aside from C1 of CR, recently I’ve seen an ask about Star Wars, some marvel stuff, Johannes Cabal, Crimson peak…. Those are all good to go yeah?

General rough list of fandoms I can vs will talk about:

Can talk about Harry Potter (extensively) but generally prefer not to because I have messy feelings about it due to, you know, JKTERF. Don't give a shit about Fantastic Beasts, let alone the new game.

Can talk about Johannes Cabal but I've not reread the books in a bit so *shrug emoji*

Can talk about Imperial Radch (recently reread the main trilogy, waiting till I have money again to buy the new book) but most of what I have to say about it is "Hey, you should read this".

Can talk about Star Wars but honestly if you want good Star Wars thoughts you should just go ask @tobermoriansass or @chamerionwrites, imo.

Will talk about Crimson Peak, I love that film a lot and have many feelings about it (have many feelings about most things del Toro has worked on; he knows so well what he's doing and it's just so engaging to watch. Will also talk about Shape of Water, Nightmare Alley and his Hellboy films).

Can talk about the MCU but also I have cut myself off from Marvel at a general infuriated tendency towards how shit the film writing is, the general homogenous sludge it produces, the shit takes of the Tony stans and the general waste of interesting characters. Will still talk about the Maximoff twins and Vision because I Love Them. Have not watched anything from after AIW because that's the one that made me fully quit the fandom.

For the most part, you can ask me about any of these but HP, because I've got a messy grieving process going on there. That said, unless it's marked as a Will talk about fandom, don't expect the kind of essays you can get for the Will talk about fandoms.

You can ask about the "Hogwarts" CR AU, but remember that I'm using Hogwarts as a shorthand for "magic school with some ideas cribbed from HP, some general magic school ideas, and a lot of independent worldbuilding", and not to expect much that's actually that recognisable as canon HP.
