I decided to reread Harry Potter and make a list of every reference in the entire series to the marauders era.

But while I'm working on that, I'm sure I'm going to have a lot of other things to think about. Here are the first two:

1. "Couldn't you do something about it, Dumbledore?" "Even if I could, I wouldn't. Scars come in handy. I have one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground."

First gut reaction (I hate Dumbledore): how tf is that possibly a helpful response? Does the scar look like a map to you? Like sir.

Second reaction (trying to see logic in it): I wonder if he already thought there might be a connection to Voldemort (whose current status was unknown) and he was trying to preserve it, just in case. He already had the mindset that Harry's connection to him might be longer than the flash of one spell. I don't know if he already had the theory about Lily dying for Harry, but he might have.

(Side note no more could have been known about what James did vs. what Lily did - they BOTH sacrificed themselves for him, they BOTH tried to save him and died for him. In the movie Lily's words to Voldemort were presented as though they were fact, even though no one was there. Not sure if I'm forgetting something I'll run across on that. But BOTH of his parents stood in Voldemort's way to save their son. Wouldn't the love protection magic have worked with James' family too? We don't know of any close family members of his so maybe he didn't have any, but this love bond thing is always presented specifically referring to LILY's family only. As though James' sacrifice was somehow lesser.)

2. Voldemort killed Lily and James on the night of October 31, 1981. Hagrid had him until the next evening, November 1, 1981. That night, Dumbledore left him on the Dursleys' doorstep. Outside. Overnight. In November. I looked it up out of curiosity and it actually rained that night. But even if it hadn't, November nights can be very cold in the UK. Dumbledore, that is already disqualifying child abuse, you aren't allowed to care for children anymore, goodbye.

headcanon that after the war, as harry is fixing up grimmauld place, he finds a box labelled “FOR HARRY’S SEVENTEENTH BIRTHDAY” and a small note to go along with it in remus’ handwriting “i don’t think it’s the right time, might have to give it to him when this is over. 31/07/1997” and harry feels like it was an eternity ago. when he opens the box he finds it filled to the brim with little flasks and when he realises the contents of them his heart stops for just a second. the first one he takes from the lot is labelled “meeting james, hogwarts express [sirius]” and harry feels like he might actually lose his mind. it takes him a while to sort through and visit all of them, but from that moment on, each time he needs a break from reality, and each halloween, he gets to sit next to james and watch as they develop the marauder’s map, and he gets to stand there and watch as seventeen years old lily pranks james by giving him a potion that turns all his hair neon pink (“this is SO not funny this is a CATASTROPHE why my hair lily??? PADFOOT STOP LAUGHING”) and he gets to sit in front of the fireplace and watch his parents play with him on his first christmas, as sirius drinks way too much eggnog (“it’s not even got alcohol in it?” “yeah sirius got it specifically done because he wanted harry to try it”) and remus hastily tries to put together one of harry’s toy presents.

Even though the Marauders fandom Jegulus dynamic has been pretty well-established after years of Marauders lore growing and developing, I still look back on those few years after I read the books for the first time and laugh at the dynamic I imagined Jegulus having. Don’t get me wrong, I still don’t really ship them (but am very much a “let people ship whoever they want to” kind of fan), but my original idea of their dynamic being like Percy and Nico’s still cracks me up. Nico consistently annoys and/or creeps Percy out, while also being incredibly helpful at the most random moments (Styx, god trio reinforcements for Manhattan, telling Bob all about Percy), and I always thought that James would probably have seen Regulus in a similar way. His best friend’s weird little brother who is occasionally very frustrating, and maybe sometimes helps the Marauders out. And I would equate that energy to Percy seeing Nico as an annoying little cousin, or even the weird and reluctantly tolerable brother of his dead friend Bianca/Roman bestie Hazel. I never got as far as James seeing past the best friend’s little brother part until the Jegulus Renaissance started happening, and by then the Cupid scene from House of Hades (iykyk…although idk how you wouldn’t at this point if you’ve read anything pjo-related) had already been well-established in the Percy Jackson universe. So Nico having a crush on Percy became inherently intertwined with Jegulus in my mind because of this dynamic that my mind spawned probably like 12 years ago
