A lot of the time, coming from the fanfiction community, there crops up a similar stream of discussion.
If you’re not familiar with fanfiction, it’s normally made up of stories and narratives about already published works — BBC Sherlock is fanfiction of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, as is House M.D., or Elementary, for example. When I talk about fanfiction here, I’m not talking about mainstream fanfiction that’s sold for a profit, but about the online community.
The online members for most fandoms dedicated to one kind of media or another are often in thousands or the hundreds of thousands, if not the millions for very popular works like Supernatural or Harry Potter.
By their nature, fanworks of any kind — be they art, comics, fanfiction, fanvideos, et cetera — are built around the enjoyment of creators and consumers within the fandom.
People write things that they find enjoyable. For some people, that does mean creating full-length novels with typical novel-esque beats throughout, but it can mean vignettes or short stories focusing on particular emotions during or after certain scenes within the canon (original) media; it might mean a smutty interlude; it might mean an alternate version of the canon where certain things go differently; it might mean rewriting stories or creating new stories within that universe where different characters become romantically or sexually involved.
I see a lot of people use the word “indulgence” with fanfiction — it’s “not serious”, it’s “self-indulgent”, it’s “just for fun”. Fanfiction is often treated as something very non-serious and silly, even by those of us that write it.
But when people talk about why fanfiction isn’t like mainstream books, a few differences are cited.
People often talk about the subtle difference between fanfiction and mainstream fiction, in how it’s written — outsiders tend to say “written like fanfiction” as an insult, and it’s usually a subtle way to derogatorily say that they dislike that the characters in the work aren’t straight, or to say it isn’t “serious” enough, but within the community, when we talk about something being written “like fanfiction”, we usually mean that the characters feel fleshed out and three-dimensional; that there’s more focus on slice-of-life and domestic interludes between characters; that there are more queer romances; that unexpected characters are used as the protagonists… I could go on.
There are hundreds of things I love about reading fanfiction that I rarely find in mainstream fiction, but a lot of these things are thought of as “bad writing”.
Too many character details, or too many slice-of-life details, aren’t relevant to the plot. The thing is, who cares about the plot?
For me, when I read anything, I read it because I care about the characters — if I don’t like the characters, or I’m not invested in them, the plot couldn’t matter less. I’m perfectly content, even outside of a romance, for a whole book’s “plot” to only really be about the characters’ relationships.
Where does one find that, reading published works? How does one search for it?
I’ve become more and more frustrated because of how mainstream published works are categorised: YA, Thriller, Romance, Humour, Mystery, Fantasy, Sci-Fi…
None of those genre categories tells me how the book is written. None of them tells me what sort of characters I can expect; none of them tells me what the tone of the work is; none of them tells me how realistic they are, or how gritty.
In fanfiction, we search for characters we already know from the original canon — we even search for pairings of particular characters we know, because we’re interested in those dynamics specifically. Until you start reading a published work, you have no realistic idea of what sort of characters are in it.
Why?
On one of the biggest fanfiction websites, Archive of Our Own, we often search for tropes or tags we personally like. Some people might search for particular kinks when they’re searching for explicit works — they might search for biting, or bondage, or something else, but people use the tag search for all kinds of other things. You might search for whump, if you’re interested in an exploration of a character getting hurt and their emotions surrounding it; you might search for particular centuries or settings; you might search for particular focuses, such as Power Dynamics, Complicated Relationships, Found Family, Emotional Manipulation, Baking, or anything else.
Tumblr media
Sure, there are tags when you search for published works, but often they’re just warnings or subgenres — there’s no option to cross your search between a handful of tropes or tags you’re interested in, and you can’t get too specific. The only way you can do that is asking on a forum and hoping other people have recommendations.
The biggest difference between fanfiction and mainstream fiction is that fanfiction is based on what people actually want to read and create. Mainstream fiction, weirdly, is not. It’s based on what people want to buy, and what they are able to sell.
Why is this?
Why is my only option when reading mainstream fiction to pick through a whole list of things in a vague genre, and hope that it matches the sort of tone I’m interested in, has the kind of tropes I like, and that the characters are actually interesting?
I become so grumpy when I think about the publishing industry, because it’s an industry that’s based on profit — people talk about it making sense to only want to sell books that are “profitable”, but books are only profitable, really, because marketing is the only way a book can sell. If a big publisher puts a lot of money into marketing a book, it will probably sell.
I think about the big trend in supernatural romances that started after Twilight came out, because suddenly, publishers were willing to publish them. We talk about “trends” in the publishing industry, but trends are really only dictated by the publishers and their marketing departments.
There are definitely people who are only interested in reading what’s popular, because that’s natural human curiosity, but I think that most people like what they like, and I think that it being simplified down to genre makes it really difficult for people to find what they do like.
How different would it be, buying books and reading them, if we could search based on particular character archetypes we liked in protagonists or other characters; if we could search based on the kinds of humour we liked, not just search for humour and hope for the best based on friends’ recommendations; if we could search for tropes we love, and find books that use those tropes well?
Based on that model, how much would change in the difference between traditionally published and self-published works, I wonder? How much would be revealed in what the core of what readers want to read, and would there be a big difference in what they want to read, and what publishers think sells?
I know some authors tag their works with Ao3-style tags, and I think I might start doing that myself in the front or back matter, but I do wish some websites really allowed for you to search by different tags and cross-search with them, so you could really narrow down what was available in the search.

[Note: this post originally appeared in this thread. Owning to Tumblr’s inability to update reblogs with edits because it is a hellsite programmed by a secretive cell of former Stasi operatives to avenge the fall of East Germany, it has thus been re-edited and reformatted here for your reading pleasure.] JK Rowling’s wizards are the most useless, lazy, incapable dumbfucks in the history of fiction. The average Muggle? You take away their technology and they would be able to complete the basic tasks of feeding and clothing themselves without shitting on the floor. If a wizard ever lost their magic in Harry Potter, though, they would die. They’d be dead in three days. They’re garbage and I hate that I’ve come to hate Harry Potter - a series I once loved - because an author inexplicably hailed for her world-building is daily revealed to be appallingly bad at it. I realize this is a really dumb thing to be this angry about but I’ve been told for years what a great world-builder J.K. Rowling is, and that was not even true when the books were coming out. The Time Turner ruined all of Harry Potter forever, not because it offers easy time travel you can hold in your hand (although it does), not because you ask ‘why don’t they just use the time turner’ with every subsequent scenario forever (although you do), but because it was an enormous, flashing red light warning everyone that the series was going to attempt to make the transition from Fairy Tale Logic to Serious Fiction logic and fail. Badly. Really, really badly. I still think Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone is an almost perfect book: a distillation of decades of boarding school genre fiction combined with magic, friendship, and wonder. It is a book that owes as much to Enid Blyton and L.M. Boston as it does to C.S. Lewis or T.H. White and other authors with two first initials. Its sense of place is magisterial, from the frumpy, soul-crushing suburban sadness of Privet Drive to the ephemeral curio-shop wonderland of Diagon Alley to Hogwarts itself, a bastion of astonishment, homeliness, and delight. What it isn’t is the sort of framework on which you can support the horror that is the torture and murder of Charity Burbage in front of her colleague Severus Snape, who could not rescue her because he could not break his deep cover as a spy against Wizard Hitler 2. Long-running series can experience changes of tone and complexity. This is neither something laudable nor worth reviling; it’s a neutral phenomenon. Sometimes series do it well: Susan Cooper’s The Dark Is Rising and Terry Pratchett’s Discworld are both series that by-and-large end with books focused on far more complex issues than their earlier entries. TV series do this too: contrast the early episodes of Steven Universe or Adventure Time with episodes from later seasons. With Adventure Time, for example, trying jumping from the pilot to Remember You and see how hard you get tonal whiplash) Lois McMaster Bujold sublime space opera The Vorkosigan Saga doesn’t just change tones but also genre: space adventure, murder mystery, political thriller, goofy regency romance, comedy of errors, heist movie, schizoid identity crisis - on and on. The latest entry in the series has almost no plot to speak of, but is instead a musing on age, gender roles, grieving the loss of a lover, and the hope of new life. Some series, however, manage the transition poorly, largely because the initial tone cannot be harmonized with the later tone (Mass Effect jumps immediately to mind). But Harry Potter has more than just a problem of its tone getting darker: its trying to have darker events fit in the same world in which people can walk around with names like ‘Mundungus,’ the Hogwarts school song can be a nonsense poem, and the Philosopher’s Stone was defended with a series of video game puzzles. In a world in which the villain openly tortures somebody to death, the Philosopher’s Stone shouldn’t have any whimisical bullshit about its magical defences: it should have trip mines in the floor and an enchanted statue with a gun, because Voldermort isn’t a guy you confound with drinking potions and flying keys. You should just kill him. The charming fairy world of wonder of HP & The Philosopher’s Stone has room for a love potion. The later books, in which it is revealed that Voldemort was essentially born from rape, is not place where Ron Weasley can hand-out a book to Harry called Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches without seeming like a predator in the making. The cradle that is The Philosopher’s Stone cannot hold a beastly baby like Deathly Hallows any more than Grindlewald pontificating about the superiority of wizards can sit comfortably in a universe in which wizards took until the 18th century to accept the outhouse! Not that fascist ravings are inherently logical; but even non-fascists in Harry Potter never act like wizards are anything other than 100% better than muggles at all times. They can’t, because if the series were ever to do that it would have to acknowledge that the two worlds are different: neither better, just different. Instead - well, as Ron once bitched, magic makes coffee perfect every time, so it’s not clear how muggles stand being alive and don’t just roll-over and die from the hellacious half-life that is living with imperfect coffee. This has nothing to do with irony, a suggestion that ‘oh Grindewald talks a big game about wizardly superiority but wizards didn’t use toilets and cal themselves goofy names like Flumpus MacFludgeon: Rowling is using dramatic ironic to lampshade how wizard supremacy lacks self-awareness. No: this is about a world that is silly being asked to host a genocidal dictator and his crimes. It’s like those tedious ‘grimdark’ AUs that always show up in bad fanfiction by authors attempting to be serious: what if the Sesame Street gang had to deal with ICE, what if Po started haemoraging while hanging-out with Laa-Laa, what if Peppa Pig learned that she was adopted and her real parents were brutally murdered as part of gang war because they were heroin dealers and so on. (The best skewering of this edgelord comedy is still probably either Andrew Hussie’s Muppet Babies/Saw comic or any encounters the Shortpacked staff ever had with the Transformers: Buckets of Blood guy.) In Harry Potter, Rowling built a wonderful little fantasy world that ran happily on the logic of fairy tales and fairy stories, and then decided she was never going to be taken seriously as an author unless she introduced Hitler to the equation. And it never works for her. It’s not like it couldn’t have worked. The Lord of the Rings is famously a very different book from The Hobbit. It did, in fact, introduce Hitler into a little fantasy world but Tolkien made it work by abandoning huge portions of the Hobbit’s tone, style, and structure: he wrote a completely different book.  Frodo isn’t scarfing-down Bertie Bott’s Every Flavoured Beans on the slopes of  Mount Doom. The moment, say, Cedric Diggory lay dead in Harry’s arms, we needed to never meet Mundungus Fletcher ever again, or Weasley’s Gooftacular Prank Nonsense, or Ron getting Harry a book about love spells. All the very least that needed to go away, at least until the very end, because Rowling is not an author with the skill to keep the silly and the sublime on the same page. That’s fine in and of itself: all artistic people have strengths and weakness, nobody is skilled at every element of creation. J.M. Barrie was very good at writing a book about an eternal child, but a bit crap at writing a biography about his mother. Arthur Sullivan spent his life quietly seething no one wanted to listen to Ivanhoe instead of The Mikado. There’s a reason Jerry Lewis never released The Day the Clown Cried.  Virginia Wolfe is a great writer, but that doesn’t mean she would have written a great run on She-Hulk. [Although now that I’ve said it I can’t think of anything I want to read more.] There’s a great bit in the Lord of Rings after the Shire has been scoured of Saruman where the Hobbits essentially open-up their larders and allow people to have fun again; there’s also a nice bit slightly earlier where Great King Aragorn puts on his old Strider clothes just so he can be his D&D character again: when series change tone, unless you’re really good at walking on a knife’s edge, the quieter, gentler, lighter world isn’t gone forever, but it does have to go away for a while: which means its time to tamp-down on the people with silly names and personalities - like Slughorn, who slips into book six like the second-coming of the vain and silly Lockhart, even though that’s the book where Dumbledore dies.
Rowling keeps trying to makes her old tone fit with her new world without having to pull a Tolkien and actually write differently, which produces moment after moment of tonal whiplash in which the latest Potter-related movie literally involves referencing the holocaust but she also drops some fun trivia about wizards shitting on the floor like animals. (You could describe the entirety of the first Fantastic Beasts film as Tonal Whiplash: The Motion Picture. I’d say that’s an essay for another day but I do not want to have to watch that movie again.)
It needs to be said that a primary reason these tone shifts ‘don’t work’ for Harry Potter is that the logic of a fairy tale is different than the logic of a mundane story. The logic of a fairy tale tends to be self contained: it doesn’t have a smart ass running around asking questions like ‘why’ because there is no why; a thing is the way it is because it is the way it is. Fairies steal babies on the third Sunday of every month, and nobody in the story asks ‘well what about in countries that use different calendars, and what about the shift from Julian to the Gregorian calendar that skipped eleven days?’ because such a pedantic question has no substance in a fairy-tale world. The Clever Child might question what the fairies need with babies, but she’s not about to break-down the week-to-week investment metrics on the Fairyland Infant Exchange. It’s not that one cannot critique or bring critical thinking to fairy stories; it’s that in a fairy story you don’t ask how the sewer system works because it’s not pertinent to what the story is trying to convey. It’s being the guy at the book club who is mad nobody wants to discuss his theories on the music of Rush: its not that the theories are bad, it’s that in this time and place they are of limited relevance. Harry Potter, however, does not belong to to the world of fairy stories, but to the legacy of Tolkienesque fantasy - the world of
Tumblr media
In The Hobbit nobody would ever ask if Hobbiton had sewers - it’s not important, and if you ask those kind of questions expecting there to be a serious answer of grave import you’re being a twit. Lord of the Rings, though? Not only is it a valid question, but Tolkien probably wrote a paper explaining the etymology of the Westron word for ‘sewer’ and how sewers were first invented by Shítlívær the Noldor as a way of helping the Blessed Isles cope with all the crap that tumbled out of Fëanor’s mouth.
The world of The Hobbit is one you could enter and expect to quickly find yourself on an adventure. The world of The Lord of The Rings is one you could enter, walk-about, and study without anyone ever exepecting you to solve some sort of regionally-disturbing social problem: in short, it wants you to be invested in the existence of its world in a different way than The Hobbit. Even then, although The Lord of the Rings is more grounded than The Hobbit, it is not so grounded that it doesn’t leave room for mystery, and questions that refute Wittgenstein’s assertion that all questions must be answerable. Tolkien loved to create complex worlds, but there was stuff he knew wasn’t worth elaborating on. It’s really his fans and authorial heirs who developed the somewhat worrying belief that a good worldbuilder has to have an answer to literally every question or else didn’t think their world through. (This has killed more potentially good books than bad cover art ever has.)
The Lord of the Rings leaves room for The Undiscovered Country. Harry Potter wants too… but can’t. Firstly, Rowling obviously understands the need for what we might call poetic mystery - like the gateway in the somewhat unsubtly name Department of Mysteries - but she also wants you to know how wizards pooped three hundred years ago. You get the feeling she knows exactly how and why that gate works, and what it is, but she withheld the knowledge because she likes mystery’s aesthetic more than she ascribes to any idea that an author might have lacunæ in the knowledge of their own work. That is, she would never put something into her work that she didn’t have an answer for - for her there is no undiscovered country that exists beyond the knowledge of even the author; she is an omniscient deity. Not for her is C.S. Lewis’ insistence that for her characters: All their life in this world and all their adventures had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on for ever: in which every chapter is better than the one before. Rowling knows exactly what happens to every one of them from the moment they were born to the moment the rot in the ground and the day-to-day schedules of their lives in heaven. Secondly - and far more of an issue - is that Harry Potter becomes a world that invites you to pick up each part of its structure and think about it, because the author has - with loving care - built that entire world for you to interact with. A place for everything, and everything its place. Except JK Rowling is a lazy thinker who never, ever considers the consequences of anything she says. Nagini is actually an Asian woman cursed to live as a snake, wizards used to magically disappear their shit from wherever they just stood and shat it out, Hermione Granger can have a time travel device to attended a bunch of classes but Harry can’t grab one off a nearby shelf and go back fifteen minutes and save his godfather, and nor a few years later can the Minister for Magic’s protection detail keep them on hand to go back half an hour and tell their past selves ‘Hey Voldemort is about to walk in here and kill y’all thought you ought to know.’ No author can work-out every aspect of every element in their works - that’s impossible, and why ARGs are solved by the internet hivemind in half a day even though they took a far smaller group of minds months to devise. But Rowling is intellectually lazy - she adds the holocaust to her Magic Fun Land without sparing a single moment to think that idea through. She then gets defensive when confronted by the suggestion that her worldbuilding might have been shallow. Hey your American wizard houses seem a bit racist also America doesn’t really use the house system in its schools - and her response was to lash out and not listen.  Rowling tried to move Potter from a fairy logic world with its own rules into our world with our rules and our history but she doesn’t know our history very well, or even our rules, so she tells us wizards shat on the floor until the 18th century while the rest of us sit around going ‘but humans have never done that as social groups - even in horrible slums and facility-free prison cells humans create a designated place for taking a shit even if it’s just ‘that corner over there.’ We don’t just drop pants and go whenever!” This is because, as a worldbuilder, J.K. Rowling is actually kind of rubbish.

Atlas At Last by louisandthealien [@louisandthealien] (83k) Harry/Louis, 1970s AU, road trip, ot5 friendship, strangers to friends to lovers
He doesn’t know what he had been expecting out of the road trip itself besides burping contests and too much shitty gas station food with Oli and Stan, but in the brief moment before Harry ambles up his driveway, Louis idly wonders if this is about to become some sort of Gay Coming of Age story.
Maine to California in ten days. In which Zayn’s an open-shirt hippie they meet somewhere in Ohio, Liam’s the pastor’s son running away from home, and Niall’s the number they call on the bathroom wall.
It’s 1978. Harry and Louis are just trying to get to San Fran in time for the Queen concert.

Be Still by thisonegoes [@this-onegoes] (150k) Zayn/Harry, murder mystery, detective AU, hurt/comfort
Zayn hears the telltale sound of stretcher wheels bouncing up over a weather strip. A tech backs out of the door first, as both Zayn and Harry turn to watch. They wheel the black body bag out and lift it down the stairs, to take her away. She's officially cleared for transport, no longer a resident of the household. She's now just a corpse wrapped in plastic.
When they finally turn back to one another, Harry blinks and then shatters into pieces.
Detective Zayn AU.

Black with Autumn Rain by whimsicule [@whimsicule] (93k) Harry/Louis, magical realism, thriller
“Thank you,” Geoff says, taking a sip of his tea. “What did you tell him?”
Louis has a sip as well, lets the tea burn down his throat too quickly, too hot, and he feels it all the way down to his stomach. “The truth. Essentially,” he replies after a moment, licking his lips, relishing the slightly bitter taste of the brew that’s never quite strong enough for Louis’ liking. At least it’s not decaf. “That my dog scented it. That I didn’t touch the body. That I came here first thing.”
Geoff nods pensively. “Did he believe you?”
“Probably not. There’s only so many people who can drown on dry land before it gets fishy.”
or: Harry is a journalist, Louis has lots of secrets and the moors aren't exactly the ideal place to rekindle a lost romance.

Cold Little Heart by seducedbycurls [@seduced-by-curls] (194k) Harry/Louis, alpha/beta/omega dynamics, werewolves, hurt/comfort

Deuxsphere by sweetlullabies (156k) Harry/Louis, college/university AU, soulmates/soulmate-identifying marks AU, enemies to friends to lovers
The way the vines of the rose curled around the sharp straightness of the dagger was an image that was going to be forever embedded into his mind. The longer Harry craned his neck to look at it in the mirror, the more he realized—it was fucking creepy. He couldn’t for the life of him figure out why it was there, or why humans decided to make it mean something.
Harry's first year at uni is guaranteed to be a breeze as long as he stays focused, steers clear of flying footballs, and completely avoids boys who are in bands.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, if I’m honest,” Harry admits, shoulders sagging in on himself. “Moving is really difficult. My whole life was in Manchester. But Manchester didn’t want me. Leeds did.”
“Well, Leeds is happy to have you,” Louis says, giving Harry a kind smile.

Life Was a Song, You Came Along by rainbowninja167 [@rainbowninja] (37k) Harry/Louis, Singin’ in the Rain AU, famous/nonfamous AU
It's embarrassing how long it takes Louis to recognize his own song. Niall had sung it as a bright, hopeful love song, and that’s honestly how Louis had always assumed it should sound. But this new voice, slow and rough, stripped of any backing instrument, has infused the lyrics with just the tumultuous mix of fear and defiance that Louis can remember so clearly from the night he wrote them. It’s not a comfortable thing, to feel like someone is singing all your secrets back to you.
Louis is a songwriter trapped in a lie that could ruin his best friend's career. Harry owns a record store, distrusts everyone in the music industry on principle, but loves Niall Horan's newest album. A modern retelling of Singin' in the Rain.

Memories of a lost soul. (on Wattpad) http://my.w.tt/UiNb/dNOjqnw46z her. I watched as he took out the gun of his jeans and placed it on the nightstand next to his bed, he took off his shirt leaving it to rest on the wooden floor and then sat on the bed looking at me, for a few seconds his eyes looked full of pain, or perhaps it was disgust towards me for having taken away the girl he once knew, once he looked away I was certain that I was not the one he loved anymore. him My bed was too small for both of us, it wasn't a problem before but now, as her memories have not come back completely, probably it will be. I forced myself to look away before she noticed how deeply painful it was to not be able to grab her and kiss her. "You can sleep here, I'll come back in the morning" I didn't look at her again before walking out of the bedroom. 1st draft /4th of December 2016/

My top 10 Harry Styles Fanfic
Hiya guys! Yes I know this isn't like my usual posts, but I can't come up with anything right now. And since I have read some fanfics, I thought why not give you my top 10? These are just Harry Styles fanfictions, I'm sorry but I mostly read them. I have a lot still in my library that I haven't read, but I am excited to do so! Here are my top 10: #10 •Obsession by LovelyLena7 My top 10 on the list is Obsession by LovelyLena7 on Wattpad. A serial killer is obsessed with Mason. I wouldn't say much because the rest is for you to find out. That's why you need to read it! #9 •Fallen [Harry Styles] {vampire} {Book 1} by TimeWillHealx I'll give #9 to Fallen. This story have got me really interested in vampire fanfics. It has twists that you wouldn't expect, which is what I'm always looking forward to! It's quite sad though that the writer didn't continue the second book (Risen). I was really looking forward to it. #8 •After 3 by Imaginator1D The 3rd book of After. The After series was such a popular fanfic and is still is. It has millions of reads and was even published. Some might might say that it should be on #1, but in my opinion After 3 is in #8. It's a really good story and it happened to moved my heart and brought tears to my eyes. I love this book, it has a special place in my heart. I could read this over and over again, but I wouldn't say it's the best. #7 •After by Imaginator1D I am a fan of all of the After books. But I think After is good to be at #7. I will never get enough of this book, but I've fallen in love with After 2. So I decided to put After on the 7th place. When I read After I can't and won't stop until I've read everything. Have you guys ever experienced that? Because it happened to me every single time I read it. #6 •After 2 by Imaginator1D Out of the 3 books, After 2 is my favorite. I don't know why but it brought me to so many level of cries and smiles. I couldn't say much about this book since I'm not exactly sure of why I love it the most. I just do. I can't explain every detail of why, but I love it! #5 •The Dollhouse | h.s by wintersnowlarry If you like Mystery/Thriller just like me, then you should definitely check out The Dollhouse by wintersnowlarry. It became one of my favorite books simply because of its unexpected happenings. I would say I wasn't expecting the ending and the epilogue because it surprised me. Seriously, it did. I don't want to write too much about it because I need you guys to read it. If I could read only 1 fanfic for the rest of my life it would be this. #4 •Deja Vu (Dreamboat sequel) >> h.s #Wattys2015 by _DaniMoon_ This book was one of the few books I've read first. It's the sequel to one of my favorites, Dreamboat. I am a little confused at first, but if you really pay attention to it, the story will make you fall in love with it. It's one of those books that you definitely have to read than hearing (or in your case, reading) it from somebody else. #3 •Dreamboat by _DaniMoon_ I ranked this book 3rd because it kind of made me dig further in these fanfics. The plot is amazing, and for me, uncommon, which is always my go to. I personally like Thrillers, but the love story of the 2 persons here was well told/written. And there would be no Deja Vu without Dreamboat. Like what I said with Deja Vu, it's one of those books you need to read. #2 •Meadow Lake >> h.s #Wattys2015 by _DaniMoon_ "Can you please break my heart?". One sentence that brought me to tears and happiness. This is just a short story with 25 chapters but it couldn't be better in my opinion. I love the love story and just everything about this book. And yes, I reccomend this book for you to read. It will surely break your heart in the best way possible. #1 Because I can't choose what book to put here, I've decided for you to fill this out. Have you ever read a Harry Styles fan fiction? What was your favorite? Whichever it is, it will be the #1 on this list. Feel free to comment down because I will surely check it out! That was my top 10 Harry Styles fan fiction. I hope you liked it. I know this was far from where I am going with this blog, but I wanted to have something for you guys to read. If you have the time don't forget to read some of these fanfics! I love you guys so much -Althea xoxo

Hey everyone!!
Hope you all had a great second week of Magical Readathon! I know we did! It’s been a tough week, but I think we’re all getting settle in to the new normal and things will calm down.
Sam’s Update
This week was a bit better than last. I think I’m starting to get the hang of this…
What Sam Finished:
Transfiguration: Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson: This is a stand alone novel where our main lady Elizabeth, a teenager brought up in an enchanted library, is accused of a crime she hasn’t committed. Murder, in fact. And she begins to uncover a conspiracy that puts other lives at risk. She teams up with a sorcerer Nathaniel and his demon servant Silas to figure it out. I really liked this a lot. I haven’t read a stand alone in ages and I definitely needed one.
Charms: Ruthless Gods by Emily Duncan: This is the sequel to Wicked Saints a gory AF Russian inspired fantasy story. Nadya and Serefin done fucked up and this is the story for them to try and fix it. I didn’t like this as much as book 1 but it was still enjoyable. Drunk review coming soon.
What Sam is Currently Reading:
History of Magic: Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell: This is the sequel to Carry On. A sequel that we didn’t deserve but we got anyway. This is sort of a spoof on Harry Potter fanfiction that began in another of Rowell’s books, Fangirl, which was also great. Basically this is Simon (Harry) and Baz (Malfoy) go to America and it’s the best. In the beginning when they get to Chicago, they assume it’s a quick trip to LA… like less than a day and I was rolling lol. Really loving this.
Ancient Runes: The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkowski: (I have a real photo here to show that my beautiful special edition has a heart on it so it counts) This is a story of a girl who’s living a pretty shit life working for and being raised by this abusive woman. But as with most abusive relationships, she has no idea. Anyway, she ends up in prison for something dumb and she meets this person who is charming and they get them both out early. The pace in this is glacial but I think the characters are super compelling. Hope to finish this in the next day or so.
Minda’s Update
Magical Readathon continues! Two classes down, at least 4 to go.
What Minda finished:
Saint X by Alexis Schaitkin – For Defense Against the Dark Arts as a book set on the sea/coast. The book is a thriller/mystery surrounding the events of a sister’s unsolved death in the Caribbean and the aftermath. I had a lot of emotions about this one. Mostly negative I think? Definitely left me unsettled.
What Minda is reading now:
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire – For my Ancient Ruins OWL. About a school devoted to helping children who return from alternate worlds move on in our world. I’m really digging the logic/nonsense virtue/wickedness descriptors.
Impostors by Scott Westerfeld – Counts for Charms with the white cover. Premise of the book is two girls are inseparable… because one is the other’s double. Made for fighting, the double steps in for a dangerous deal and needs to keep her cover to survive.
  Ginny’s Update
Hi Everyone,
It appears I really am in a slump. The only book I really finished this week was the Dungeon Masters Guide (I’m starting a campaign with some friends! Can’t wait for that). But I’ve found it really hard to get myself to read, it’s a lot easier to listen to a podcast, watch something, or play a game.
What Ginny Finished:
Hilariously Ever After by Various Authors: Hahaha, I lied, I finally finished this monstrosity. Not only did this anthology have like 6 books and 8 novellas, I even enjoyed 1 and a half of them…. Honestly, it comes down to a lot of plots I didn’t enjoy, and writing that was probably fine five years ago. I don’t particular enjoy “taboo” relationships, poorly written children, or shaming of fat people, sexual predilections, looks, etc. I really really really don’t suggest this anthology.
What Ginny is Currently Reading:
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern: I’m not super feeling the low key romance in this book. I’d almost have preferred a written history of the library. Like I said, I’m just having a hard time focusing.
The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders: This book is super solid so far. The beginning starts with a note about translations which makes it seem like the book is a historical track and I basically nerded out over that hardcore. I’m still working on putting together some of the pieces but I am really enjoying this once I get myself to pick it up.
Shorefall by Robert Jackson Bennett: This is the sequel to Foundaryside and it picks up in a great place. I really enjoy this guys writing style, and the world feels so complex and well done. Also, this book has a lot, and I do mean A LOT of body horror. Still, I’m so excited to see where this one goes.
Until next time, we main forever drunkenly yours,
Sam, Ginny, and Minda
Weekly Wrap-Up: Apr 6 – 12, 2020 Hey everyone!! Hope you all had a great second week of Magical Readathon! I know we did!

Chimera - Fanfic - Chapter 2
*Samantha’s POV*
Murmured voices and booming laughter could be heard behind me as I scurried down the hallway, the meeting room slowly emptying out as everyone returned to their offices or disappeared into the lift for lunch. My office was located at the very end of the hall, a small box room sealed away in to the corner from prying eyes and egotistical males. It was barely large enough to house my desk, a small bookcase and a filing cabinet, but as I collapsed into the cool leather of my desk chair and spun to face the window, I let out a soft breath of content because no matter how small my office was, it was still my office.
The sun glinted through the floor to ceiling window before disappearing behind one of the small grey clouds that littered the sky. London was bustling, tourists shuffled from photo opportunity to photo opportunity, from Downing Street to Victoria Embankment, men in sharp suits, and joggers weaving between the crowed, and well-dressed ladies, arms laden with shopping bags went about their business. London was alive with the sounds of life, and for a moment, I forgot where I was and what I had just signed up to do.
The wall shook beside me as the door to the adjoining office was slammed closed, and with a roll of my eyes and a huff of frustration, I turned my back on the crowds below me and returned to my own reality. I brushed several scrap sheets of paper from the edge of my desk and into the bin, taking one last sip from my bottle of water before discarding it as well. Like the rest of my office, the desk was small, worn and empty. Scattered before me were the remnants of old cases, my desk phone, several black pens and a 2 year old card from my mother which read ‘congratulations on your new job’. My laptop remained in its case, dumped on the floor where I had left it this morning.
I straightened up the paper and pens. Barbra should be arriving any moment.
“Hello dear” she chirped. Never one for knocking, she strolled into the room, a thin manila folder tucked neatly under her arm.
“Morning Barbra, how are you?” I asked. My formalities were never wasted on Barbra, as the wife or Mr Parsons, I felt it necessary to treat her with the up most respect, not least because on more than one occasion my politeness had got me in good favour with her husband.
She shot be a quick 'I’m fine’ before taking a seat in the rickety chair opposite me. Barbra was a tall, thin woman who, if upon introduction hadn’t informed me she was in the late stages of her 40s, I would have assumed was 21. She had soft brown hair which shaped the gentle curve of her face and a bright smile which was always ready to greet me each morning from her position behind the reception desk.
“I was told to bring this to you dear,” she said, pushing the folder gently towards me. “Eric said you’ve taken this case on alone? Very brave. About time someone showed these boys that you aren’t just a pretty face eh?”
“Yeah, well none of them were exactly bursting with enthusiasm at the thought of this one” I said, lifting the lid on the paper folder and internally deflating at the sight of the three flimsy, almost blank pages before me.
“I’m not surprised, hear there is some big serial killer case from Lewisham. They’re probably al holding out for that one” she said, glancing around the room and brushing a crumb from the desk top.
“Well this girl deserves someone to help her” I mumbled as I flicked through the pages before me.
“Of course she does dear, and I have great faith in the fact that you will be that person”. I flashed her a small smile. Well, at least that makes one of us.
“There is nothing here Barbra, these pages, they’re practically blank!” I exclaimed and she sighed gently, reaching over the desk to take the sheets from me.
“I know,” she said, flicking through them once before stacking them nearly and placing them back in the folder. “They couldn’t get much out the girl when she came in the other day for an interview, still pretty shook up I would imagine. The boy who came with her couldn’t help much either, her brother, I think she said. That was all she could give them. I expect you might get more out of her now that the initial shock has passed, she might have had time to remember some more. If not I’m sure you’ll be able to coax something out of her, young girls like her tend to respond better when they are dealing with women” she explained. For a receptionist, Barbra, it seemed, knew more about the ins and outs of Scotland Yard than I did myself.
“How do you know all this? I didn’t think Mr Parsons had been involved with this case at all?” I asked. She smiled gently, shifting forward in her seat and placing her crossed arms on the table.
“I’ve worked here for 15 years my love, you get to know the workings of a place after 15 years” she winked. It occurred to me that perhaps, sitting behind that desk in the foyer provided Barbra with the perfect vantage point for observing the comings and goings throughout the departments. Perhaps her eyes were not always glued to her computer screen as I had always assumed.
I smiled softly at her and nodded. With a quick drum of her manicured fingers against the table she rose gracefully from the chair and adjusted her knee-length pencil skirt.
“I’ll fetch you the girl’s contact details shall I? See if out can bring her in again and get some more out of her”. With a sharp turn, a swish of hair and the rustling of fabric she left the room.
I sighed at her departure and returned to the case folder, the name of the girl I was about to meet printed neatly in ink across the front;
Daniella Styles
The three sheets of paper within her folder consisted of a stamen from her, her brother and a time log of when the incident was reported, when she arrived at the station and when she believed the incident took place (around 11.30 of Thursday evening based on the time she arrived at her brothers apartment).
Daniella’s statement was brief, the few questions she did answer were short, one liners which even Sherlock Holmes would have trouble making anything from. Her brothers were slightly more detailed, but all he could really describe was the state his sister was in when she arrived back at his apartment.
I was startled from my analysis by the ringing of my desk phone.
“Hello?” I asked.
“Me dear” Barbra chimed, I have the contact details for you.
I quickly scribbled down the details on the corner of one of the sheets, an email address and a mobile number, and thanked Barbra before hanging up. Deciding the mobile number was probably the easiest, and quickest, way to get hold of Daniella, I tried that first.
The call was answered after three rings.
“Hello?” A male voice rasped down the line.
“Hello, I’m looking for a Miss Daniella Styles, is she available?” I asked.
“She’s actually asleep at the moment, could I take a message for her?”
“Yes Sir. My name is Samantha White, I am the detective at Scotland Yard in charge of Miss Styles’ case. I was wondering if she would be available at some point within the coming days to return to the station for a further interview?” I said. As I spoke, I could hear my father’s voice in my head, mocking my attempt at formality.
“Oh, oh yes of course. I could wake her and we could be in in say, 2 hours’ time? Is that too soon?” he hurried, eagerness leaking from his voice as he spoke.
“No of course not, Mr…” I hesitated, realising I actually had no idea who I was talking to. Rooky mistake number 1 Samantha.
“Styles, Harry Styles. I’m Daniella’s brother” he said.
