Satan: “…The cleanup is going to be a nightmare.”

Satan: *blushing* “Hey, why are you looking at me like that?”

MC: “Have you been cheating on me? …With cats?”

Satan: “If looking at pictures of cats in books counts as cheating on you, then…I guess? Heheh, are you actually jealous of the cats?”

Satan: “Well, I wouldn’t collect books about something unless I like it, obviously.”

Asmodeus: “Is that Satan with…a cat?”

Satan: “I take responsibility for my actions. And I regret nothing I did…nothing.”

Satan: “…I regret nothing. I just like to help cats in need. That’s all.”

Lucifer: “You may not have regrets, but you still need to consider the consequences of your actions. First of all, anytime you happen upon a cat, you immediately decide to bring it home with you, which…”

Satan: “Oh, right. I heard you’ve got this place in your world known as “Cat Island.” …In Japan, I think. Have you hear of it? Because I’d really like to go check it out sometime. With you, naturally.”

Satan: *blushing* “Wait, what? You have documentaries about cats in the human world…? Oh, I want to see these documentaries. No, I have to see them. Actually, let’s watch them right now.”

Satan: “I don’t believe it…”

Asmodeus: “Satan, do you recognize this thing?”

Satan: “I do. I’ve seen one of these on DevilTube. There was a cat riding on it.”

Lucifer: “The cat ears? How exactly are those supposed to help…”

Satan: *gasp*…!

Satan takes 222 damage.

Beelzebub: “The cat ears actually worked…”

Lucifer: “…Huh?”

Solomon: “Still, they barely did any damage at all. The Demon Lord Satan has 870,000 HP total.”

Lucifer: “Damn…! Someone get us a real cat, and fast!”

Satan: “I was planning to spend the day thinking up new cat video hashtags to search on Devilgram…”

Satan: “They’re… They’re so cute…”

Asmodeus: “What are you looking at, Satan? …What am I saying? As if I even need to ask. You’re watching cat videos, aren’t you?”

Satan: “I’ve never thought of searching the hashtag “FrolickingWithADuck” before. Wow, have I been missing out… And don’t you just love this one too, Asmo? “FriendsWithAHamster.””

Satan: “What I wouldn’t give to be able to watch a nice, soothing cat video right now…”

Simeon: “…Wait. What did you just say? They want a Pretty Kitty Special…?”

Satan: “Yeah. It’s a new menu item I came up with. They’re pancakes in the shape of a cat’s paw. They’re soft, fluffy, and flavored with maple syrup. These are guaranteed to become the café’s signature dish.”

Simeon: “Ahaha… They really are cute…”

Mammon: “Man, he’s sure is crazy about cats.”

Luke: “Aha… Looks like we found Satan. Hmm, he’s staring at his tablet with a really serious look on his face. I wonder what he’s doing… Trying to understand the current economic conditions in the human world? Or studying a foreign language, maybe? Wow, he really is committed to the pursuit of knowledge…”

Mammon: “Nope, wrong. That’s the face he makes when he’s watchin’ cat videos.”

Luke: “Watching cat videos…?”

Satan: “As you can see, I’m busy.”

Mammon: “Busy?! You’re just sittin’ here watching cat videos!”

Mammon: “For real?”

Luke: “Shhh! Quiet, Mammon! Which is why we’ve come to you. As a cat lover, we were really hoping you could advise Simeon… And you know…to do that, you’d need to understand how the business is run, right? And what better way than by working there part-time?!”

Satan: “Why didn’t you say that to begin with? In that case, I’m glad to help.”

MC: “You know, every day cats show up at the café…”

Satan: “Cats…?”

Luke: “…! Right! Right, exactly. Really, really cute cats…kittens, in fact!”

Satan: “Did you say kittens?”

Luke: “Mmhm. Three of them…actually, wait. Maybe it was five?”

Satan: “Five kittens…”

Luke: “They always show up as soon as they get hungry, and we feed them! Wow, they’re just adorable! They like to hang out in front of the café and play. When they wrestle, it’s like little balls of fur rolling around!”

Satan: “Let’s go. Now.”

Luke: “…Huh?”

Satan: “You said you needed someone to work at the café, right? I want to let Simeon know I’m interested before he gives someone else the job.”

Simeon: “Likewise! I have to say, you’re a lifesaver. I feel much better knowing you’ll be here.”

Simeon: “Right. That’s my first point of confusion, actually. I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Simeon: “Anyway, don’t blame me when Barbatos makes you pay for this later. He looked QUITE angry about being forced into filling in for you at the café.”

Satan: “I mean, he should be happy, right? He’s surrounded by cats, after all. Sounds great to me.”

so, apparently marvel is in disarray. ahead of the marvels coming out this weekend, variety dropped a bomb on the studio's somewhat dire state of affairs, as the franchise has hit its first real rough patch since the release of iron man 15 years ago. among the issues: jonathan majors, whose domestic violence arrest continues to hang over marvel's plans to make his character the thanos-like heavy for the next sequence of movies, the weak box office projections for the marvels (which some have said is tracking lower than recent bombs like the flash), the unending flood of hashtag content on disney plus which is overwhelming audiences who are finding it harder to keep up with the interlocking stories that have served marvel so well over the years, shoddy visual effects, spiraling budgets such as the reported $25mil an episode for she-hulk, a show that looked terrible because of the shoddy effects work aforementioned, behind the scenes chaos as kevin feige works to slash budgets and kill projects that aren't coming together. one movie at risk is the forthcoming blade reboot with mahershala ali, which has gone through rewrite after rewrite including reportedly one draft in which blade was the fourth lead in, quote, "a narrative led by women and filled with life lessons".

that last line has provided a lot of laughs for people like jay gothicprep, and critics who insist that marvel's efforts to diversify the lineup have led to much of this disaster, indicative of disney's overall failure with things like indiana jones and the dial of destiny or animated projects like strange world or lightyear. while this is potentially true (i guess, it's possible) it doesn't seem true because this certainly wasn't the case when black panther and captain marvel were both cracking the billion dollar mark a few years ago. rather it just seems, more simply, that marvel has run its course. marvel was hit by a double-whammy of endings. the thanos storyline that'd dominated the first ten or so years of the project came to an end. at the same time, the pandemic began and disney plus started flooding the zone with content, creating a natural break point for audiences that had no desire to watch hours of tv to understand 1.5 plot points in whatever the next movie that's coming out is.

this preamble is getting kind of long, and i have a lot more to say, so i'm going to continue to thought dump about this under a cut.

first of all, i'm still laughing like a week later at the women led life lessons description. no one has disputed that it happened. that description is the funniest thing i've ever read in a trade industry report possibly ever. what in the hell, my friends. did a writer even talk to a producer about what blade was? it's a movie about a guy with a sword who kills vampires! it's pretty straighforward! that sounds like something i want to see! there were three of them already, and two of them were pretty good!

anyway, i think you can take that incredibly ridiculous description of a draft that maybe wasn't the main draft – this movie has been through tons of writers and directors – and see some of the real problems with marvel's creative direction, which is that they've stopped making movies that highlight the core concepts of their characters. there are other problems as well, but when's the last time they put out a movie that was like, "iron man. he's a guy in a metal suit and he fights a bad guy." or "spider man. it's a guy in a spider suit with spider powers. he's got girlfriend problems and he fights crime around manhattan and maybe there's dr octopus." they don't do that. their recent stretch of movies have all been these impenetrable multiverse stuff with ties to tv series that you haven't seen and maybe won't ever see. there was a whole 25 minute section in black panther 2 that was setting up armor wars and ironheart. and like. who needs that sequence, which was boring and looked like total garbage? and now armor wars is being redeveloped lol. they've just departed from a lot of the core concepts that powered their earlier films.

they have some other problems. they've leaned into a slate of characters that is not all that well-known or inherently super popular, even for marvel being able to deliver on making billion dollar films out of guardians of the galaxy and such. maybe with the exception of spider man, which they don't get a full cut from because sony owns the actual movie rights. then there's the fact that the streaming series, by all accounts, aren't great but you *feel* like you need to have seen them. they're all real big problems. marvel needs to go back to making movies that are named after a character who's a superhero with a clear concept. guy with spider powers fights crime in his neighborhood. even though those movies got kind of repetitive, they did well enough because they didn't stray too far from the character concept.

i think, too, as a viewer, when you have a studio churning out so much stuff that's not good, you get the impression that the superhero industry feels entitled to your time and entitled to your money while not delivering.

this summer also represents an interesting counterpoint to what's happened with marvel and dc. the sheer amount of stuff that you devote every waking minute to keeping track of the damn things got exhausting and made movies stop feeling like events. this summer we've had barbenheimer and the eras tour, and those have been both big events and felt exciting. barbie was a chance to be campy, oppenheimer was a chance to see something serious and cinematic, the eras tour was exciting for fans of taylor swift who couldn't afford to spend $3k on taylor swift. and they felt this way because they were all unlike anything you'd seen at the movies in recent years. they had a high standard of quality, and going, it genuinely felt like people were there because they wanted to be, not because they were being force marched by a cultural behemoth to be there. you can't summon that same kind of energy for a marvel movie when it both feels obligatory and you expect it to be bad.

it also feels like there's a certain contempt for the audience where it concerns quality problems. i mean, i don't think that this is the intention. marvel isn't saying "we can deliver this stuff that's garbage and people will see it anyway". but one of the things i thought was the most damning about that variety story was the fact that, on some of the marvel tv shows, the final effects were inserted after the shows were released. so if you watched the show on opening night, you probably didn't see the final effects work. the arrogance involved in that is insane. it speaks to a total vanished pride in putting out a good product.

even some of marvel's better regarded films were heavily edited and heavily worked on right until the end, in part because kevin feige would come in and fix things, so stuff would have to get reworked. that's why effects deadlines were super tight and people were always crunching at the very end of this. there was that incredible quote from sam raimi from a couple months before the second doctor strange came out where he was like, "i think it's done but i'm not sure. marvel, they work on their movies until the very end." the director didn't even know if his own movie was locked or not because he clearly wasn't the one making the decisions about what the final print would look like.

that can work if you're making two movies a year and have a supervisor that comes in during the process and says, "i need you to redo this, in this way". but when you stretch that out to three movies a year, plus god knows how many episodes of television, there's no way to do that and make it a high quality product.

an instructive lesson comes from the book "disneywar", which chronicles michael eisner's time at disney. and one of the things in this book was the development and deployment of "who wants to be a millionaire" in america. bob iger is head of abc at this time. the guys making this show do it for a week. audiences love it. it's putting up huge numbers. everybody is excited. it's crushing it in the ratings. and the people who made it wanted to keep doing special week or two week long engagements that people would show up for. and iger was like, "no. i want this every week, three times a week, forever." and audiences got burnt out on it quickly, because it was something that only really worked as a special that ran for a week and disappeared for a few months. that's what the disney plus strategy feels like with marvel.

no one is into animal hybrids well that's okay because i will make you into animal hybrids. i just find it interesting and cool and like if unicorns were real sometimes it's like Wow... but also u can be on some level aware of the ethicality i guess bc some ppl crossbreed animals for i dunno taking advantage or entertainment purposes or just like arrogance and stupidity BUT sometimes it's just like the scientific spirit i suppose i don't know. and there's a difference between like hybrids with fertile young vs infertile but just because the hybrid offspring is infertile doesn't always mean it's unhealthy or i suppose immoral ? its just to do with chromosomes n junk it's all complicated ... and i just like them and like seeing what they look like i used to be the kid who believed in that cat/rabbit hybrid hoax though which doesn't help

but it does just happen in the wild a bunch bc a coyote just thinks it found the worlds biggest coyote girlfriend but really his girlfriend is a wolf. which is so funny to me. I love them so much.

and then u have something like a buffalo and a cow which r fertile . and a false killer whale and bottlenose dolphin

all members of the ursidae family can healthily produce offspring which rules but i think this second picture might just be a normal grizzly bear. but the first is a polar grizzly <3

then there's savannah cats and bengal cats which i think everyone knows about but make me so mad to be honest every time i see a serval in someone's house i wish they dropped dead it is HIGHLY unethical and just stupid even if i do sort of get wanting to have your own mini tiger it's just STUPID and rich people bullshit and 9/10 times when they can't look after the wild animal in their home it ends up being dumped + very rarely are they being taken care of + it is abusive by nature to simply own any wild animal even if you're a fucking trained animal handler or whatever which also goes for idiots who keep sugar gliders or like raccoons + letting it interact with domestic pets is WILD. and most of them end up as rescues in sanctuaries like with every other exotic pet and actually there's entire debates on whether it's ethical to even have sanctuaries where the keeper directly interacts with the animal and "no touch" facilities i believe r more ethical and the best option for the animal.. basically if u see a dumbass tiktok where someone is petting a panther taking advantage of the spectacle it creates call them a cunt in the comments okay

anyway. these domestic wild hybrids DO have health problems though it is interesting that the savannah cat female offspring is fertile to begin with... it's similar to wolfdogs in the levels of wild vs domestic being ranked 1 to .. 4 ? i think (but wolfdogs i don't actually know much about... they r more common tho) so like an f1 savannah cat is basically just a smaller serval which are HUGE wild cats to begin with and then it goes on in generations until it is essentially a house cat . so dismissing everything i just said it is interesting to see

then with other big cats all members of the panthera genus can interbreed but all produce infertile male offspring and would never occur naturally in the wild. the females are fertile though which is also interesting i think... they also like most hybrids have different characteristics dependent on the parent species and sex so a male tiger and female lion (tigon) would create something different than a female tiger and a male lion (liger). which is also cool hashtag genetics. these are a female and male liger

Sorry for hijacking your meta-writing abilities but I'm at work and I have just had an epiphany. You know what's really, insanely wild about the whole Cath/Billie/Steve problem? That when in 4x02 Steve rants that Cath will need a job, and Danny answers that they'll find her one, despite harping about Catherine’s unmatched abilities in recon and intel, Steve doesn't suggest, NOT EVEN AS A JOKE, no, it doesn't even cross his mind, that they could offer her a job in Five-0. Steve could do it. Later he will. BUT. NOT. HERE. AND. NOW. See, it would've solved any issue: give Cath a job exactly tailored onto her, keep her close to Steve, reinforce their bond. But neither Steve, nor Danny, even suggest it. Or think about it. It's like....dunno, it's like they don't want to break the perfect bubble of intimacy and closeness they've built for themselves. Like Cath would play among them the same role Billie plays between Steve and her. Or maybe I'm seein things.

You are not hijacking anything like I'm ever gonna pass up an opportunity to ramble (especially about my current obsession aka McDanno). You are not seeing things, unless you mean seeing what's actually shown on screen ;).

First, I'm gonna speculate on the reasons the writers wrote it this way and then I'll put my shipping goggles on.

As soon as they made Cath a regular on the show, I thought it's just a matter of time before she would have to join 5-0 just because, well, it's what the show is about.

BUT there were two problems with that, one - they didn't want to make it look like she only got the job because she's Steve's sometimes maybe girlfriend (even tho lbr that is why, not that she's not qualified, of course she is, but she was only considered for the job because of her connection to the boss, that is the definition of nepotism, not to mention they wanted to avoid the implication that she...uh...slept her way to the top) so they had to make it look like she had her own thing and they tried everything before just sticking her on the team.

The second problem, I imagine, is they didn't want to make it look like they immediately replaced Kono with Cath (while Grace was on her maternity leave which was a valid reason for her to be absent the optics are just not great especially after they already sidelined Kono for Lori in S2, since the show was allergic to having more than one woman on the team (had to adhere to the Smurfette Principle I guess).

The Powers That Be and the marketing doesn't care about the show *being* progressive it cares about *appearing* progressive which is why they had to cover their bases, so to speak. They had to go 'See? We have tried everything. We gave her her own job, that didn't work out, and now they are one team member short so it makes sense for her to be there since she is more than qualified, not because she's dating the boss, she's her own woman, hashtag feminism'.

So that's my conjecture/speculation for why it was written like that OUT OF universe.

Now *puts her shipping goggles on* since we don't have to consider the external reasons and only work with what we get on screen, you are absolutely right, it's veeeery curious how neither Steve nor Danny actually want Cath there, because 5-0 is ohana and no matter how much TPTB tried to force it she was never truly part of it.

But more than that, their job is their partnership, it's a Steve-and-Danny thing, of course they didn't want a third wheel to invade their own private little world.

It's absolutely in the same vein with Steve inviting Danny to go fishing to his father's secret spot and refusing to disclose to Cath where he is going. (He needs his very special male bonding time away from wymyn ;))

Steve NEEDS a place where he can escape to from the tiring burden of heteronormativity, Danny doesn't have to see his 'girlfriends' at work every day, this is the time where he can spend as much time as he wants with Steve without anyone invading that, of course they don't want Steve's 'girlfriend' to be there every day taking a giant bite out of their quality time cake.

Cath being there means they both have to be on™ all the time, the performance never stops and they can't relax and be themselves and it's exhausting. Steve prefers to compartmentalize and he was perfectly happy to keep Cath and 5-0 separate.

Not to mention he was perfectly okay with the little amount of time he usually spent with her (tells us everything we need to know, doesn't it, especially compared how him and Danny live in each other's pockets) and if she worked with them it would be like being forced to eat tasteless bran every day instead of only occasionally just to tick a box.

Lastly, I would argue that unlike with Billie, there IS actually a triangle of sorts with Cath - Steve - Danny (Billie - Cath - Steve isn't a real triangle because Steve is clearly not interested in competing with Billie).

Danny definitely doesn't enjoy Cath encroaching on his quality time with Steve, and he *cannot* watch any form of PDA between the two, as evidenced by him literally turning away and/or making a joke every time he has to witness the forced display. Her working with them would mean he would have to suffer through even more of that so of course it wouldn't be his suggestion. Danny may feel like 'the other woman' sometimes but in reality Cath simply couldn't compete with him, if Steve knew he returned his feelings he would have dropped Cath like a hot potato. It's not a real love triangle when the sides are extremely uneven and the choice is obvious.

TL;Dr: you are not so much seeing as perceiving correctly.

12.) What opinion does your Tav have about the Gods?

Ohhh, that's a meaty one! I think... there's a certain element of practicality? Like, the gods are measurably, perceivably real, and they are clearly extremely powerful beings that have a huge impact on the world, so why not worship a good one? But also... he's got that rebellious streak in him. That disdain for authority, especially authority that demands respect for no other reason than it feel deserved. So I think as a paladin he worships Bahamut, in so much as he worships any god whose tenets he believes in, but it's more a matter of... paid respects, I guess. He's always gotten most of his power from his oath. Self-actualization and dedication to his cause are where he gets his strength from, and he tries to be beholden to the gods as little as possible.

(I love how they reworked paladins in D&D to make them more agnostic, can you tell, I find that whole thing so fascinating)

13.) How does your Tav feel about the wilderness?

Answered this one! I will add, however, that when traveling with company, he finds roughing it to be far more pleasant. (Especially once Karlach gets her engine fixed.)

14.) How does your Tav feel about the city?

I think he loves the city! He likes the feeling of being surrounded by people, of the teeming lifeblood of civilization and all that. I also think he dislikes the smell, and the crime, and the corruption, and the prejudice, and all the various and sundry things that happen when a million people are crammed into tight quarters. He prefers the finer things you find in the upper city, but he also loves the lower city because it feels freer, less restrictive. It's complicated, I guess!

19.) What is your Tav’s greatest desire?

Woof. I don't know. I guess... initially, it's to find where he fits. Because he doesn't fit where his parents wanted him to fit, and he finds some vague purpose in seminary school, but he's still looking for a place to settle.

I think once he meets Karlach? That's it. He's going wherever she's going, and his greatest desire at that point is to find a way to fix her engine and make her happy.

Now, there's a lot of conversations you can have with her late in the romance where you can constantly bring up how you have to solve her problem and why isn't she looking harder and why aren't we freaking out more about her impending death... but he only does that once, I think. He knows it's not helpful, knows what she wants and needs is to seize what she has while she has it, so he keeps his concerns to himself. But the time comes, and he won't see her die, so he goes down to Avernus with her. Because of course he does. Because there was never any other option, any other path for him but this. I think he finally feels a touch of providence and the divine in his life, maybe for the first time -- the revelation that all his skills, all his training, all the power he gained to heal the wounded and smite the wicked was meant for precisely this journey, down into the inferno, to spend the rest of his life killing devils with the love of his life.

I have responses to this.

This time I was a patient boy and watched to the end before commenting, which is good because the later parts clarified my reaction to the earlier parts.

So, talking about this dynamic, I was very proud when, back in the day, I recognized that Gamergate was very much about cultural appropriation, that essentially Gamers conceived of themselves as an insular, distinct culture, and felt that "their" important stories and cultural artifacts were being coopted by outsiders who had a shallow, and even hostile, understanding of the culture that they were drawing from and yet these cultural outsiders received plaudits and prestige for mediocre work while the underlying culture that they drew from was ignored at best and actively denigrated and demonized at worst, in pretty much an exact parallel to cultural appropriation narratives about, say, the birth of rock and roll, or native american spiritual culture.

This amazingly correct bolt of insight was very, very unpopular in the left-wing circles I run in.

But going forward to the Little Mermaid nonsense, it's just the mirror universe version of #ownvoices with a goatee.

Like, I saw people who, whether they were being sincere or satirical, made this really explicit. "Hans Christian Anderson is a very important part of Danish culture, shouldn't the people with that heritage be the ones telling this story? Shouldn't they see themselves in the actors?"

The self-conception of these people is that they're doing their own version of #ownvoices. I don't really want to necessarily agree or disagree about whether that's true, but listening to people it's a huge part of their dialogues with each other and their own self-conception.

And it frustrates me to see something that is obviously so psychologically crucial to these people just be completely ignored in analyses of why they do what they do.

I think what crystalized it for me is, late in the video Sarah Z mentions an earlier video about how marginalized creators are often blasted by left-wing critics for indulging in mediocre or imperfect representation.

And I guess the question I would have is, do you think that the left-wingers who go after marginalized creators who do problematic or mediocre rep are any kinder to the mediocre straight white men of the world?

I mean if the answer is yes that's pretty fascinating and I'd love to see it unpacked.

But what I think is that they are just as likely to blast mediocre white guys into cinders, as long as those mediocre white guys are soft targets.

And I think they choose their targets exactly the same way as Sarah Z indicates that they do in the video: Mediocre white guys who make popular yet arguably problematic work and have good industry connections get some heat which is eventually drowned by the actions of their own fans and the fact that they make money for the media companies that they work for, while mediocre white guys without many connections who make work which is too poor to build a huge fanbase are just as likely to be made into sacrificial trash.

You know, I see twitter hashtags like #menwritewomen, say, or see the people limping back from YA Twitter on broken stumps, and I think... "Wow, maybe I better not try to put any art out there."

In fact, I'm a bit nervous about writing any of this, because even saying, "The sacrificial trash produced by left-wingers intimidates me and makes me frightened to do things" is, in my experience, the equivalent of painting a giant target on my back.

After all, why would I be scared if I wasn't a bigot?

There's a point when going through all the accusations against High Guardian Spice where Sarah Z mentions off-hand that one of the creators was accused of hating men.

My first response, was, "Well, did she?"

It's not addressed, and is in fact glossed over so quickly that I think we're supposed to accept that it couldn't be a problem.

But... Uh... I am kind of concerned if people hate me. And when I see that glossed over as just obviously silly, well...

It makes me a little bit nervous. It makes me a little less sure of myself, it makes me wonder a little bit more about whether people will have my back if anybody decides to come after me.

One of the elements to this kind of backlash is bigotry, and I think sometimes I underemphasize that, because it isn't bigotry aimed at me, so I can afford to be philosophic.

But in addition to bigotry and money from the algorithm, a huge thread running through these backlashes is self-defense. People get on the hate train because they've seen people like them, or people that they like, proverbial "mediocre white men" become sacrificial trash before.

And they start to think, "How can I build up a defense against that?"

The obvious answer is to band together with people who are very vocally against the kinds of people who would launch these sacrificial trash campaigns against you.

And, for a good... decade or so, the left-wing response has been to assert that essentially some groups of people are, by virtue of their race or gender or gender identity or sexuality or politics, immune to these kinds of sacrificial trash dogpiles. That I, as a mediocre white man, shouldn't be intimidated or offended or put off when people say that they're tired of art by mediocre white men, because I'm in a position where nobody could really hurt me.

I don't think that's adequate any longer; most importantly it's just obviously not true anymore. Plenty of poorly defended "privileged" people have been blasted for a mediocre tweet or bad joke.

If we want to combat this kind of thing I think it behooves us to understand why people are actually part of it, and if you listen without preconceptions, self-defense is a huge part of it. Making a big stink about a black Ariel is an attempt at self-assurance, a way to say, "I can call on the same clout as #ownvoices if I want to."

And even if we want to say that's totally irrational (And frankly I don't think it is completely irrational) I don't think it can be effectively countered by just ignoring the central part of its appeal and pretending that it's just a core of bigotry and a few people who enjoy hot takes.

I think if we want to fight it we need to actually grapple with its appeal, not sideline what's happening in favor of a narrative that is more flattering to our own politics.

And I'm really, truly, genuinely not sure whether to @ Sarah Z on tumblr with this.

I'm alarmed at what might happen if this post escapes from the Rationalist Containment Zone. Are people going to fry me as a bigot who hates diversity in media? Or will I attract people who hate woke garbage to harass Sarah Z?

Whether or not the fear is rational, the fear itself is real. I really think it is vital that we understand that underlying emotion to understand this stuff.

So, when did you get into The Cuphead Show and did you played the original game?

Truth is, I never played the original game no matter how much I wanted to (although, I have seen a copy with the DLC in a mall recently!). I was a Cuphead fan way before the show's first trailer dropped, which was what inspired me to get back into the franchise and be inspired to pick back up my very first fanfiction, Teen Girl in a Toon World (which will be getting an update on my new account this Saturday). Although, I do have a funny story about this topic.

Way back before the show's first trailer dropped, there were actually some leaked episodes on Google Drive. Problem was, I wasn't too aware about copyright and/or plagiarism (if that's the right term) at the time, especially because I hadn't yet started my YouTube channel, so I definitely didn't know better. I had seen atleast three episodes: "Carn-Evil", "Baby Bottle", and "Dangerous Mugman" (that last one helped me develop my OC's character more). This told me that there was a show on the way, which got me really excited. A while after though, I kind of fell out of Cuphead for a while and went on to Amphibia, and then I saw the trailer for TCS!, and that did it. I was hyped for it all over again, and I couldn't wait to see it.

When it did get released, I binged the first season and had plenty of fun. As time went on, I enjoyed the show plenty more, even with the creepy episodes because I enjoy creepiness a lot. The creepiness feels a lot like Amphibia's dark humor, which would always give me a bit of a weird feeling alongside a laugh. I guess that's one reason Amphibia and TCS are two of my favorite shows, especially as a pair: they actually go well together in a way I enjoy. But that's not really the point, even if I do want to talk about this story for as long as I could. Maybe another time. But not now.

And, here you are! My story of how I got back into Cuphead with the show. I am really happy that I decided to watch the show, as it is absolutely worth it especially if you're a fan of Cuphead or just animation in general. I highly recommend giving it a watch and supporting the hashtag #RENEWTHECUPHEADSHOW, all caps, for a chance to get it a new season on Netflix. I really liked talking about this and I'm hoping to tell more stories in the future. For now, I've got to log out and get some stuff done, so I'll see you all soon (hopefully).

Tw vent and death (and a little bit of family business)

I was 10 years old when my brother was fatally killed by gang members. Even 8 years later, I could still vividly recall the while entire event like a videotape. The cries of help, the blood pouring out of his body that would drip all over the floor, the knife that killed him, the laughter of his killers as they run away hoping that they wouldn’t be found, the sound of ambulance coming to take him to the hospital as I told him that I loved him as police officers took me away from him. His last words to me was “Takashi, I’m going to be fine. Don’t worry about me. Go home.”

He died on his way to the hospital at just aged 14. He was sending drugs to Manchester, Liverpool, all over the UK, just to make some ends meet. My dad was abusive to us and our mom and so she turned into an alcoholic and he would leave us for another woman. This would be how we would have food into the table. He would earn some money so he would pay the rent that mom would purposely forget to do so. However, one of those days he was caught and had to go to prison for few months. Because he didn’t do his job, they tracked him down and killed him. I saw it all.

A month after he passed away, my mom went along too. Guess who found her body? Me. I saw her lifeless body in the living room when I came home and remembered shaking her in hopes she would wake up, but she never did. Just seeing her pale body haunts me as well as my brother screaming. I will never get those images out of my head and they’ll be with me for the rest of my life.

I couldn’t even listen to drill music knowing that this is the kind of shit my brother’s killers listen to. Seeing those people in masks and holding some sort of weapon gives me flashbacks and makes me wanna throw up on the spot. I hate seeing people die for the same reason, especially if it’s someone around the same age as my brother. I hate seeing this shit going all over the news. I get terrible anxiety attacks whenever I even think about something as simple as a knife. But what can I do? Every single day, I have to deal with my triggers being around me 24/7. I’m seeing drill music and remixes getting popular on Tiktok, knives are basically everywhere and those films that depict gang violence, they’re everywhere.

This is why I find it so funny that here on Tumblr I’m seeing people in their 20s crying about people using the wrong hashtag when there are serious shit happening in this world such as their family members or friends dying and they have to watch that shit whilst you are able to view the censored version online. Consider yourself privileged. I didn’t get to see a “TW” before my brother died or even saw it pixelated. I saw it raw. I could even hear the squelching sounds of the knife going in and out of him. Trust me, I could hear everything and it’s very uncomfortable for me to sit through this every single fucking day of my life. It was so bad that I even resorted to drugs and taking my own life. Trust me, it fucking sucks. I don’t even wish this upon my worst enemy.

How can you be so lost in your head that you think the internet can help you with your first world problems? Life doesn’t have a trigger warning, it just happened. If god knew that my brother was going to die today, he would just put a “TW” before my day started. It was just a normal day just like any other day. I got out of bed and I did my morning routine. That very day, I went home from my friend’s house and saw him running across the street. I thought he was trying to catch the bus, but I was dead wrong. He was running for his life.

As someone with extreme PTSD, the fanfics in the #ptsdrecovery does affect me. I find it so damn stupid if they do so, especially if they showcase the actual scene of the gang violence in vague detail. However, the only people I could let them off are newbies to this app. I understand how different the app it is to an app like Instagram or something. I do it too when I go on Instagram and I would under tag because I don’t know how their algorithm works. It’s all human error and they could learn not to do it again, but for those that deliberately do it, especially for many years, they piss me the fuck off.

But here’s the thing, Tumblr isn’t your free therapy session. There are full of people with different coping mechanisms and strategies. If Tumblr was to cater only to those who get triggered over fanfictions showing up on recovery tag, then is it even a freedom of speech app? Tell me if that’s fair to ban anyone who has reading or making fanfictions as a coping mechanism just because one person feels entitled to their problems and puts the blame on others. Although it is super frustrating that we have to deal with this, there’s nothing we could do. We could tell people to make another hashtags to be specific which is #ptsdrecoveryfanfics but what would you do if you see one anyways?

See the problem isn’t the users, it’s your mindset. It’s not our responsibility to stop you from getting triggered, it’s you. People are just living their lives the way they do and so they shouldn’t be obligated to follow by your rules only. I mean, do you think I tell my friends not to play drill music when I’m around? Do I tell stores to not sell knives just because I get triggered by it. No. Unfortunately, I have to move on. No matter how hard it is, I do need to continue with my life. Trust me, this is not an easy task. Having to move on like it was a small inconvenience in my life was difficult, which is why I had go to cognitive behavioural therapy, take some meds and so much shit just so I could live my normal life.

Even now, I could still imagine the scene one and on again, and it makes me want to live in the past. It’s not just I want to see him again, I just wished I stayed at my friend’s house for much longer. Maybe if I was there for few more minutes, I would only have the memory of him going to the hospital. If I went back to get my charger for my phone, I wouldn’t be aching to have this image in my head.

But what could I do? It has already happened. This just taught me a valuable lesson. If you are able to watch things with a trigger warning and a blur hiding the horrifying scene, then you’re privileged. There are people dying in wars, most notably, in Ukraine. Families are dying, friends are getting lost, people losing strangers they had met just few hours ago. You could meet someone and not know if this is the last time you’ll see them or not. They don’t get to have their deaths blurred. Sone people would see their loved ones in brutal conditions that their bodies are fully mutated that it doesn’t even look like them anymore. Even if they weren’t there, that image would stay with them for the rest of their lives.

There are SERIOUS things that are happening in this world and the only thing those, mind I tell you, ADULTS harassing literal newbies in this app just because they used the wrong tag for their fanfiction posts. And for them to be so entitled to think that Tumblr is all about them and them only because they’re right and they know everything. NO THE FUCK YOU DON’T. This is a first world problem that YOU’RE dealing with. There are millions of people starving to death because they cannot afford to bring food into their plates. There are women and girls getting raped into this day because there are asshole men that wants to take advantage of them and that pisses me the fuck up seeing the fucked up things they do to these people, and your only problem are people using the wrong tags whether it’s an accident or not?

I’ve fucking seen everything. I watched my parents fight, my brother’s unlawful death, I saw my mother’s lifeless body on the couch at the living room, my dad left me meaning that me and my sisters had to go move with my grandparents. I bullied at school for being Asian, gay and fat. I was once beaten up to the point where I was hospitalised. It happened in 2020 too during the pandemic. Everyone called me “ching-chong” and told me to go back to where I came from. In the pandemic version, they also told me to kill myself. Then, my sister got raped. That got me sick to my stomach seeing how differently she acted. I also saw her get abused by her boyfriend and I had to step in and beat him up. I was stabbed on the arm by the one thing I was scared of, a knife. He happily called me faggot and chink as I was in excruciating pain. I don’t know how I could explain it, but it was not good.

At this point, I had a big hatred towards the world. However, you only have one life and you gotta live it. I could of chose to be chronically online just like the rest of us on Tumblr, or I could continue fighting and living my life. I chose to be in the real world, because once it’s gone, there’s no going back. I have my friends with me and a crush in my class. I chose to live my life because that was the only thing I could do. I don’t like being online as much, but this is why I only go there to protect my friends.

To give you a summary because some Tumblr users are retarded, I agree with said post and I had stated clearly how I felt about fanfictions going into recovery tags. The only thing I said was that I would understand if it was a newbie. If it was someone who casually does it despite knowing that they shouldn’t do that, then they should know what’s coming. Newbies are NEW to this app. They probably came from an app like Instagram. As someone with extreme PTSD, I’ll forgive them, especially if it’s their first time overtagging because they simply didn’t know how this app works. If it’s someone who has been doing it for years and hasn’t changed ever since, then yes I could understand why you can get mad at them. Unless if you’re mentally retarded, everyone should agree with this whether you hate people overtagging or not. No newbies are going to search up “how to tag on tumblr.” It’s just not realistic. What’s really going to happen is that they’re going to overtag or use the wrong tags and if someone can nicely explain it to them that they shouldn’t be tagging like that, then they’ll take it seriously and quit it. They’re human too and they’ll understand it. They aren’t going to listen to a crazy looking blogger screaming in dms because they aren’t going to take it seriously. This is just facts. But also, I feel like the people who are triggered, they kinda have to do their part as well. Like I said earlier, people aren’t obligated to give a trigger warning or help you when you get triggered. If they do however, it’s out of luck. Most people (especially in the real world) doesn’t give a shit about you. You wanna know why? They’re too busy into their own lives that they aren’t going to censor every word you are triggered over just so they could protect your precious feelings. This is life and you have to live by its rules. If you see something triggering, it’s up to you with how you go about it. If I was to see knives, I’ll just use filtered tags or words. Of course, you’ll still gonna see some regardless. This is because you cannot run away from reality. You’ll have to face it one day.

I know for some people it’s hard to digest, so I made an even dumber version of the summary. Crosstagging is bad. However, newbies can be forgiven because they didn’t know. not to. Of course newbies could search on google “how to tag posts” but it’s not realistic. Realistically, they will post and then figure out when someone tells them. If you do, it is better for you to explain it nicely and clearly so they would know for the next time not to overtag. But, if it’s someone who has been in this app for many years and wouldn’t stop, then yes, it is bad and they should be banned. But nonetheless, you need to help yourself too. Go to settings and put filter tags or words so you can hide certain posts you don’t want to see. There are very little things you could do in this situation, which means that you’ll need to face the harsh reality one day that not everything is censored and so you’ll see things that are uncensored.

Sorry for the language. I just had been so stressed lately. I think I’m gonna take a break from using this app.

I don’t know if you have said you won’t talk about the T & Miss J situation. If you did forget this ask. If not what do you think about both company doing nothing about it? Or are they doing something behind the scenes? Until last night i was still thinking i really don’t give a f about them. But now the talk on the street is someone got into her cloud and that’s how they got the pictures. And now i think it’s frightening for someone anyone really do be on the receiving end of something like that.

I hope they are ok more importantly that she is Ok cause it’s her privacy that has been made public, it’s her cloud. Mr T to an extent cause he is in the pictures but for me i couldn’t bring myself to worry about him. But her i feel for her and it seems like it’s not the first time.

And if in a cruel world all this shenanigans is like a pr stunt or something 🔪

T & Miss J, that sounds like a drink name, lol. No, I have no policy on not talking about this, I actually answered a few asks last week when the leak rumor started.

As to the companies approach and their current public silence on it, this is how I see it. Concerning the breach of privacy and hacking someone's IG account or iCloud (it's still not sure what is the origin of the photos), YG is the company that could make a statement because this concerns Jennie, the idol under contract there. Her account was hacked. But just because they haven't said anything, it doesn't mean nothing is being done. Fans shouldn't expect instantly to be in the loop in regards to this issue and how it's handled. Since this is no longer just a mere dating rumor, but something much more serious, perhaps the approach is different. Fans trending hashtags on twitter and demanding a public response is certainly out of concern, but it's also for their peace of mind because they the fans feel the need to know that something is being done. But since they're not in they haven't gotten a response yet, it might translate for them as the company doing nothing to protect its artist. At the same time, the leaks started last week with gurumiharibo posting the photos with their own watermark, but now it escalated, so it does make me wonder why that person was still able to do what they want and still wasn't stopped somehow after so many days. It's a sketchy situation and everyone thinks they have their answer, but at this point, the reality is that we simply don't know.

As to the fans reaction, I think it's quite interesting what's happening. They spent days (some of them are still doing it), making threads to debunk the photos, calling themselves photoshop experts to prove the photos of Tae and Jennie are fake. Of course focusing primarily on proving they are not dating, more than on the aspect of this being a harmful breach of privacy that could lead to the leaking of other personal information, which in my view, is the biggest concern. But now that photos of Jennie with Rose in NY and a mirror selca with Jisoo were also posted, there is a shift in conversation because I guess they are finally allowing themselves to realize that this is way more serious than someone editing photos of Tae and Jennie to fuel a dating rumor. I haven't seen anyone trying to prove the Jennie and Rose photo is fake, that someone took photos of them separately and edited them together. Everyone simply acknowledges it's them. So this points to the actual problem fans had up until now, which was simply not wanting to acknowledge that two people are dating. The more they denied that, the more photos kept leaking. As fans that call for the protection of Tae and Jennie, unfortunately their priorities in the beginning were those of typical stans who cannot accept even the possibility of them being in a relationship. So now it lead to this point.

Hybe doesn't need to make any statement, unless they want to publicly acknowledge that the dating rumor is true or not, which then again, it's not something that is mandatory. Not saying anything could mean different things, especially compared to their approach towards dating rumors in general, which were quickly denied. They are not doing it now, especially since it's way bigger than some article on Pann based on imaginary lovestagram. So perhaps they simply don't want to get involved or Tae himself doesn't want for any statement to be made. We can't possibly know. My point is, fans demanding Hybe to speak up about the leaks of Jennie's photos is not realistic because it concerns an artist from another company.

The situation is still unfolding and everyday now, something else may come up, which is a scary thought. I feel sorry for Jennie because someone hacking a phone and reveal private photos is not something that anyone wants, especially in the context of the world to see. I hope something gets done as soon as possible and as much as I wish this could be a learning lesson for those who are first and foremost more concerned about their idol dating and not about how that information got out, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

If you're talking about the UpAgain moments thing, honestly to me the ones that made the least sense were P/C and S/H. Like, what was their down moment? Winning silver at their previous Olympics? Actually even for Kaori, dgmw I love her and she had an amazing year, but she never really had a down moment either? I guess for Yuzuru you could say that well, he was battling with injuries for the entire quad and yet he still managed to certify the first 4A but that's not even the angle they're taking since they're just saying that he got injured before the free in Beijing so idk. Actually Nathan kinda makes sense to me cause he did have a glow up between the beginning and end of the quad. But I agree that Shoma's story deserved to be featured. You're right, they just took the biggest names for each discipline rn and rolled with it

For P/C and Sui/Han can be said the same thing as for Yuzu.

Sui and Han battled with many injuries through their entire careers.

Papadakis/Cizeron both had severe cases of COVID-19 that made them miss a season, also Gabriella Papadakis had severe mental health problem.

Kaori lost some of her momentum between the 2019-2020 and this season 2021-2022 and had trouble with motivation.

So yes all of them dealed with some kind of setback in their careers, but none of them struggled as bad to fear not even making the selection for a Worlds team like Shoma.

And even if we don't take Shoma into account as ofc I am pretty biased for him. There is Mai Mihara who sat out almost two years because she was so seriously ill that she could not even walk, but she fought jer way back to competition. Or Wakaba Higuchi who was Worlds Silver Medalist in 2018,but it took her 4 years to compete at a World/Olympic stage. Or let's take Jason Brown who missed the Olympics in 2018 and changed his whole surroundings to come back and be selected for the 2022 Olympics. And even if I am not their fan and atm including Russians is difficult for logical reasons the story of Sinitsina/Katsalapov, who also struggled to even get selected to represent their country in 2018 and now they are Olympic Silver medalists. Or one of the most impressive #UpAgain moment would be the Ukrainian team who represented their country in the most difficult of circumstances and little to no training and still fought and skated.

I can name a lot more stories where the #UpAgain narrative would fit much better than to chose basically all Olympic champions and with all respect towards Kaori (love you) it looks like she was just selected because the Ladies champ was Russian and therefore atm is not a possible choice.

All those champions are for sure wonderful and also have great stories, but I think ISU just could have done better and show more diverse skaters stories than selecting the most common names from the Olympics (excluding Russians). It's just disappointing but as we talk about the ISU I surely didn't expect anything else.

Yes I do agree that they had a rough quad.

Actually the hashtag #UpAgain could actually fit any skater. They all fall and get up again and they all fight with injuries as ISU didn't make clear as to why those skaters are selected there is no way of knowing what "criterias" they used. I just think their selection is a bit too obvious and lazy.
