I was thinking about Hat man, his motivations as (probably) an antagonist and how he foils our protagonists and you know what I just realized ?

He kinda wants fate. He wants one timeline.he literally says there are parallel timelines and he wants them to be one.And considering the parallels timeline are made because of different choices made by different people,he wants to "fix" it by either taking away their choices or by undoing the choice made that was different (which we assume means targeting Cheng Xiaoshi since Lu Guang's choice was different and saved him).

And then you contrast him to Lu Guang who has been saying you can't change the past while making the choice to change it but also one of his core principle is "the past can't be changed (haha 😂) but the future can". He tells Cheng Xiaoshi that explicitly during the earthquake episode.

And when you think about it in that lens... then Lu Guang's goal is to fight against is the concept of destiny (just not his own but CXS's) and now I'm rooting for him even more and the endgame kinda changes. It's not a "Lu Guang needs to accept the death of Cheng Xiaoshi was inevitable and actually accept his death", it's a "saving Cheng Xiaoshi means that it is possible to have multiple timelines and choices" which to me, makes Cheng Xiaoshi less doomed.
