Kim Min-jae (Fenerbahce) received high ratings for the second game in a row.

Fenerbahce defeated Hatayspor 2-1 in the 7th round of the 2021-2022 Turkish Super League held at Yeni Hatay Stadiumu in Hatay, Turkey on the 26th (Korean time). With 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss, Fenerbahce moved up to the top of the league table. They are two points behind Trabzonspor, who has not played the 7th round yet.

Kim Min-jae, who has established himself as a key player right after the transfer and is starting for seven consecutive league matches, played the role of a defender in the middle of the three-back team and showed a decent performance for 90 minutes. He had the most successful aerial ball competitions on the team with five, including eight kicks and one interception.

Praise continues towards Kim Min-jae, who has settled in the new league without a period of adaptation. Ridvan Dilmen, a commentator for Turkish media 'TRT Spor', who described Kim Min-jae as "a player who is undeserved for our league" after the previous game, once again praised Kim Min-jae after finishing the Hataispor game. Dilmen, who also played as a midfielder for Turkey's national team during his active career, played for Fenerbahce for 8 seasons from 1987 to 1999, and briefly served as Fenerbahce manager in 1999.

Dilmen said, "Fenerbahce is building a strong defense. The Kim Min-jae they brought in this summer is undoubtedly the best defender in the league. A teammate is a good striker, but Kim Min-jae has unwavering tenacity and speed. He is a player who has everything he can have. He also has a very accurate passing ability.”

The enemy commander who faced Fenerbahce on this day also paid tribute to the Fenerbahce defense, which played a solid defense with Kim Min-jae as the center. Ömer Erdogan Hatayspor said in a press conference after the match, "We couldn't create many opportunities. Fenerbahce's defense deserves praise.

Fenerbahce will face Olympiacos (Greece) on October 1st in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League group stage match, and on the 3rd in Kasimpasa and the Super League 8th round. Kim Min-jae, who was called up to the Korean national team ahead of the A match in October, will go to Korea after two matches.

Western Asia connected before rise of cities

High levels of human movement in parts of Western Asia – which includes the modern-day Middle East – led to a more genetically connected society well before the rise of cities, not the other way around as previously thought, new research shows.

An international team of scientists looked at DNA data from 110 skeletal remains dated 3000 to 7500 years ago gathered from archaeological sites in Anatolia (Turkey), the Northern Levant, which includes countries on the Mediterranean coast such as Israel and Jordan, and the Southern Caucasus, which includes Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Based on their analysis, they describe two genomic events that occurred around 8500 and 4000 years ago that pointed to long-term genetic mixing in the region and subtle population movements within the area, shedding light on a long-standing question.

“Within this geographic scope, you have a number of distinct populations, distinct ideological groups that are interacting quite a lot and it hasn’t really been clear to what degree people are actually moving or if this is simply just a high contact area from trade,” says Christina Warinner from Harvard University, US, a senior author of a paper in the journal Cell.

“What we can see is that rather than this period being characterised by dramatic migrations or conquest, what we see is the slow mixing of different populations, the slow mixing of ideas, and it’s percolating out of this melting pot that we see the rise of urbanism – the rise of cities.”

The study was led by the Max Planck-Harvard Research Centre for the Archaeoscience of the Ancient Mediterranean and included researchers from many disciplines and countries, including Australia, Azerbaijan, France, Italy, Germany, South Korea, Turkey, and the US.

The aim, they say, was to fill in some of the anthropological gaps between the origins of agriculture and of cities.

Western Asia is known for its early trade routes, which laid the foundation for what would become the Silk Road, but even before being connected with other regions, its populations had developed distinct traditions and systems of social organisation.

“What we see in archaeology is that the interconnectivity within Western Asia increased and areas such as Anatolia, the Northern Levant, and the Caucasus became a hub for [the] exchange of ideas and material culture,” says lead author Eirini Skourtanioti, from Germany’s Max Planck Institute.

The skeletons were housed in different museums and labs around the world. The samples for analysis were taken from their teeth and the petrous, which is part of the inner ear.  

In their paper, the authors outline how approximately 8500 years ago, populations across Anatolia and the Southern Caucasus began genetically mixing, resulting in a gradual change in genetic profile that over a thousand years slowly spread across both areas and entered into what is now northern Iraq.

The other shift they detected wasn’t as gradual. Samples from the ancient cities of Alalakh and Ebla in what is now southern Turkey and northern Syria show that around 4000 years ago the Northern Levant experienced a relatively sudden introduction of new people.

The paper also presents new information about long distance migration during the late Bronze Age. The researchers determined that a lone corpse buried in a well in Hatay genetically belonged in Central Asia 4000 years ago, not at a site that is part of present-day Turkey.

“We can’t exactly know her story, but we can piece together a lot of information that suggests that either she or her ancestors were fairly recent migrants from Central Asia,” says Warinner.

“We don’t know the context in which they arrived in the Eastern Mediterranean, but this is a period of increasing connectivity in this part of the world.”

"Nothing has been adopted so far, there is nothing final at all except for the agreement on an agenda. This is the only final thing that we achieved in this round," Ja'afari told reporters in Geneva. Damascus sought a unified Syrian opposition, "not a Saudi partner nor a Qatari, Turkish or French partner". "What is asked is to have a partner," he said."

Reuters and other news outlets reported earlier this week that the administration plans to propose to Congress cuts in the budgets for the U.S. State Department and Agency for International Development by about one third. "We are going to propose to reduce foreign aid and we are going to propose to spend that money here," White House Office of Management Budget director Mick Mulvaney told Fox News on Saturday, adding the proposed cuts would include "fairly dramatic reductions in foreign aid." Mulvaney said the cuts in foreign aid would help the administration fund a proposed $54 billion expansion of the U.S. military budget. "The overriding message is fairly straightforward: less money spent overseas means more money spent here," said Mulvaney, a former South Carolina Representative. The United States spends just over $50 billion annually on the State Department and USAID, compared with $600 billion or more each year on the Pentagon."

"There are a lot of angry groups protesting and we thought it was important to show our support," said Peter Boykin, president of Gays for Trump, who helped organize Saturday's rally in Washington. In many towns and cities, the rallies did not draw more than a few hundred people. At some, supporters of the president were at risk of being outnumbered by small groups of anti-Trump protesters who gathered to shout against the rallies."

--- "Foreigners aiming for temporary jobs at high-tech U.S. companies will undergo a longer visa approval process after the Trump administration announced it will temporarily suspend expedited applications for H-1B visas. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said on Friday that starting April 3 it will suspend "premium processing" for up to six months. Under this expedited procedure, applicants can be eligible for visa approvals within 15 days, instead of a regular review period that can last for up to a few months. The H-1B non-immigrant visa allows U.S. companies to employ graduate-level workers in several specialized fields, including information technology, medicine, engineering and mathematics. USCIS said that during the suspension period, individuals still can request expedited consideration, but must meet certain criteria, such as humanitarian reasons, an emergency situation or the prospect of severe financial loss to a company or individual."

--- "U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions will reply in writing to Senate Democrats' questions about his meetings with Russia's ambassador last year, the Justice Department said on Friday after a top Republican denied Democrats' request for a public hearing. Nine Democratic senators sent a letter earlier Friday asking Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley to call Sessions before his panel to explain his failure until this week to disclose his contacts with the Russian ambassador during the 2016 presidential campaign. The letter came a day after Sessions, the country's top justice official and a key ally of Republican President Donald Trump, removed himself from any investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the election. Grassley replied that he had no plans for a hearing. Instead, Sessions on Monday will submit written answers to questions posed in the Democratic lawmakers' letter, such as why he did not come forward sooner to detail his communications with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak, Justice Department spokesman Peter Carr said."
