Porsche 928 
Slumping sales of the 911 in the mid-1970s seemed to confirm that the model was approaching the end of its economic life cycle. Fuhrmann envisioned the new range-topping grand tourer model as being the best possible combination of a sports coupé and a luxury sedan. This would set it apart from the 911, with its relatively spartan interior and true sports car performance. The targets were that the car had to compete on par with offerings from Mercedes-Benz and BMW while also being successful in the United States, Porsche's main market at the time.
Several drivetrain layouts were considered during early development, including rear- and mid-engine, but most were dismissed because of technical and legislative difficulties. Having the engine, transmission, catalytic converter(s) and exhaust all cramped into a small rear engine bay made emission and noise control difficult which were the problems Porsche had with the 911. After deciding that the mid-engine layout did not allow enough room in the passenger compartment, a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout was chosen
The finished car debuted at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show before going on sale later that year as a 1978 model. Although it won early acclaim for its comfort, power and futuristic design, sales were slow. Base prices were much higher than that of the previous range-topping 911 model and the 928's front-engined, water-cooled design alienated many Porsche purists.
The 928 featured a large, front-mounted and water-cooled V8 engine driving the rear wheels. Originally displacing 4.5 L and featuring a single overhead camshaft design, it was rated at 219 hp (163 kW; 222 PS) for the North American market and 240 PS (177 kW; 237 hp) in other markets. Porsche upgraded the engine from mechanical to electronic fuel injection in 1980 for US models, although power remained the same. This design marked a major change in direction for Porsche (started with the introduction of the 924 in 1976), whose cars had until then used only rear- or mid-mounted air-cooled flat engines with four or six cylinders.
Porsche utilised a transaxle in the 928 to help achieve 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, aiding the car's balance. Although it weighed more than the difficult-to-handle 911, its more neutral weight balance and higher power output gave it similar performance on the track. The 928 was regarded as the more relaxing car to drive at the time. It came with either a five-speed dog leg manual transmission, or a Mercedes-Benz-derived automatic transmission, originally with three speeds, with four-speed from 1983 in North America and 1984 in other markets. For the first generation cars, 1978 & 1979, the majority of cars were fitted with the less expensive 5 speed manual gearbox while the optional 3 speed automatic was much scarcer. As the model years continued, this ratio evened out and then finally more cars had the automatic transmission. The exact percentage of manual and automatic gearbox cars for the entire production run is not known.
The body, styled by Wolfgang Möbius under the guidance of Anatole Lapine, was mainly galvanized steel, but the doors, front wing, front fenders, and hood were made of aluminium to save weight. It had a substantial luggage area accessed via a large hatchback. Newly developed polyurethane elastic bumpers were integrated into the nose and tail and covered in body-coloured plastic; an unusual feature for the time that aided the car visually and reduced its drag. Another unusual feature was the pop-up headlamps which were based on the units found on the Lamborghini Miura and were integrated into the front wings.
Although it never sold in the numbers Fuhrmann envisioned, the 928 developed an avid following and had an 18-year production run.

Het Groothandelsgebouw of Groot Handelsgebouw is een bedrijfsverzamelgebouw aan het Stationsplein, naast Station Rotterdam Centraal. Het gebouw is een rijksmonument, ontworpen door architecten H.A. Maaskant en Ir. W. van Tijen. Groothandelsgebouw is zoals de naam in origine werd geschreven. Het was daarmee een "gebouw voor de groothandel". Begin 21ste eeuw vertrokken de groothandelaren naar de rand van de stad en transformeerde het gebouw naar een multifunctioneel bedrijfsverzamelgebouw.
Simca was een Frans automerk. De naam is een acroniem van Société Industrielle de Mécanique et de Carrosserie Automobile; een autofabriek die in 1934 te Nanterre werd opgericht door Enrico Teodoro Pigozzi (Henri Pigozzi).
Onder het merk Simca zijn heel wat bijzonder succesvolle auto's geproduceerd. In de jaren 50 boekte Simca successen met de Aronde, een goede middenklasser, en de Vedette, een grote limousine. Ook in de jaren 60 had Simca een kaskraker in huis: de Simca 1000, een kleine en wendbare wagen (drievolumenmodel) die veel ruimte bood. In de sportuitvoering (Rallye 1000 in drie uitvoeringen, zie foto) was het een haast onverslaanbare rallywagen in zijn klasse, naast de coupévariant bekend als Simca 1000 coupé. De jaren 70 boden in de kleinere middenklasse de Simca 1100, samen met de Renault 16 een van de eerste werkelijke hatchbacks op de markt. In de grotere middenklasse was er de Simca 1300/1500, opgevolgd door de 1301/1501. Dit waren grote sedans of stationwagons (Tourist genoemd).

Impressive Beijing X55 Is Made And Priced To Sell
In recent years, carmakers from the Far East are pulling no punches. Just look at what the Haval division of Great Wall Motors (GWM) has done in the last 24 months. Or the strides Chery has made in the last year. Just consider that the last time it was a fixture on the local scene, it was selling the horrid QQ3.
Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC) is another brand to keep an eye out for. It first came to the country with the D20, a hatchback clearly inspired by the Mercedes-Benz B-Class from two generations back. Then it added the odd-looking X25 to its portfolio, as well as the B40 off-roader, which underwent a name change from BJ40 for some reason.
But its newest release, the BAIC X55, has been met with far less ambivalence. We had a taste of the model at an event last year, but after spending a week testing the product, the verdict is conclusive: this is not just one of the most compelling Chinese products on the market, but easily one of the most compelling choices in the compact crossover segment.
BAIC’s Beijing X55 SUV is a real head-turner, prompting countless double-takes and smartphone pictures taken by strangers. People think it comes from a more pedigreed and exotic stable than its price tag and badge would have them believe.
It starts at R412,900 for the Dynamic, R4424,900 for the Elite and R472,900 for the Elite range-topper we tested. A five-year/150,000km warranty and a five-year/60,000km service plan are included.
What else can you get for that price, with exterior door handles that eject and retract electronically just like those on the latest Range Rover? The dazzle factor of the X55 is extremely high, given the relatively modest asking price.
Pulling one of those door handles reveals a thoroughly modern interior, with an interesting blend of textures, shapes and novel fittings. The interior door pulls, for example, have a floating effect. The sculpted door panels are backlit, which looks especially nifty at night.
Its red leatherette upholstery echoes the feel of a vehicle with sporting character, while the single-piece front seats boast a design that would look right at home in a performance coupé.
The three-spoke steering wheel is wrapped in perforated leatherette and fits snugly in the palm.
But we can level criticism at the overall user interface aspect. Taking centre stage is a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, through which virtually all functions are controlled, including the climate system.
One wished for conventional dials to adjust fan speed, temperature and even audio volume, as having to navigate through the screen can be distracting. The last point about volume is at least redeemed by the presence of steering-mounted controls.
Power across the range comes from a 1.5l, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine. It has a purported output of 130kW and 305Nm, which feels somewhat less so in reality. It errs on the strained side under hard acceleration, when urgent overtaking is required, for instance. Best to finesse the X55 along, rather than expecting brisk, instant fizz. The seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic is excellent, dispatching shifts imperceptibly.
The cabin is well-suppressed against exterior noise. Rolling on 19-inch wheels, the X55 does not offer the same polish in the ride quality department as some German, Japanese and South Korean rivals. Still, at the price it asks, you can forgive this deficiency. And truth be told, the average buyer upgrading from an older B-segment hatchback into the BAIC is not likely to find the suspension tuning a deal-breaker.
Equipment is bountiful. Climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, an electronically-operated tailgate, electric seat adjustment for driver and front passenger as well as in-car Wi-Fi are part of the package. The clarity and resolution of the reverse camera also deserve a mention.
On the safety front, it offers dual front, side and curtain airbags, in addition to anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic stability control, electronic brake-force distribution and a tyre pressure monitor. Chinese NCAP has awarded it five stars.
This luxury SUV looks the part, features a high level of perceived quality, and is well-equipped and priced to undercut chief rivals. Expect to see many on our roads, more so once the firm gets local production up and running at its Gqeberha plant.

Audi's Activesphere Concept is Nothing Short of Impressive

Audi has finally given the public a look at its latest Audi activesphere concept vehicle, which follows up from the Audi skysphere roadster in 2021, Audi grandsphere saloon, and the Audi urbansphere space concept in April 2022. This new concept incorporates familiar and traditional vehicular elements and mixes them up a bit with newer, more forward-thinking features - let's take a quick look! All-Around Vehicle Conceptualized and designed at the Audi Design Studio in Malibu by Studio manager Gael Buzyn and his team, the new concept is built on a four-door crossover coupé design that stands at 4.98 meters long, evoking the appearance of a luxury-class vehicle with the added versatility of off-road handling thanks to its large 22-inch wheels. The activesphere also features an all-wheel drive system, alongside adjustable ground clearance that can be increased by 40 millimetres from the basic height of 208 millimetres, or lowered by the same amount when driving on-road. The activesphere essentially merges a hatchback design with design elements and technical equipment found in an allroad vehicle. Audi calls this new body variant “active Sportback” in contrast to the allroad. It's an interesting approach for sure, and one that we undoubtedly want to see more of. A single button press converts the activesphere's Sportback rear into an open cargo bed, making it ideal for carrying equipment for sports and outdoor activities, and there's even room on top for additional equipment. Likewise, its drive system and suspension are designed for off-road handling, as well as navigating through urban areas. The dynamic roof arch and specially-designed contours also make the activesphere aerodynamic, reducing drag while on the move. Modernized Elements The activesphere is also built with an electric drive and quick-charging technology from Audi’s PPE modular system, allowing it a range of over 372 miles, and extremely fast charging times with 800-volt technology. Audi has also gone the extra mile and incorporated its Audi Dimension operating concept, which combines physical and virtual interfaces that displays digital content in real-time within the user's field of view. The activesphere also displays driver-relevant information, 3D content, as well as interactive elements which can be configured by drivers and passengers. Headset users will also be able to view control panels and other virtual displays, and the control panel even incorporates mixed reality controls which are touch sensitive. Passenger Comfort Audi's "Sphere" series concepts are named as such because the vehicles are focused around the interior, with an emphasis on passenger comfort and experience. The company says that "Kilowatts and mph or lateral acceleration are no longer at the top of the design specifications for this new generation of cars." Special focus is given with regards to the interior and its design, which works in harmony with the rest of the vehicle. Glass surfaces make up a significant part of the vehicle’s body, with the front-end of the activesphere featuring the brand face and the Singleframe, which gives passengers an unobstructed view of their surroundings as they're seated in one of the four individual seats onboard. On the rear, the wide tailgate comes with extensive glazing for optimum lighting, adding to the natural light that passes through the transparent roof. Integrated with Tech The activesphere concept is also fully-envisioned to take full advantage of connectivity with modern smart hardware and software, such as VR headset technology and smart devices. Audi says that while current technologies allow for connectivity between vehicles and computers or tablets for example, the activesphere will be able to utilize mixed reality tech and VR headset hardware to plan routes, keep an eye on vehicle maintenance, and such. Additionally, information about the car, battery range, and nearby charging stations can also be accessed inside and outside the vehicle. Everything from a modernized dashboard to door controls have been fitted with newer elements for a cohesive, more digital experience. With all that said, the activesphere is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and promising concepts we've seen from Audi, and showcases some very interesting approaches to modern electric vehicles and automobiles geared towards utility and off-road handling. Ferrari 375 MM “Ingrid Bergman Coupé” Speciale 
In 1953-1954 Ferrari built the 375MM (Mille Miglia) to conquer the racing World Sportscar Championship. While the majority were built for competition a few (about five) were made for the street and called Speciales.Film director Roberto Rosselini had one of the best known romances with Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman who eventually became his wife. He commissioned the 1954 Pininfarina Ferrari 375MM Coupé Speciale  as a gift for Bergman, hence calling it the “Bergman Coupé”, even though she never received the car. It made its first public appearance at the Paris Salon Auto Show in 1954 before being delivered to Roberto Rossellini.Whether it was a publicity stunt or an actual gesture of love (or both) the car is an amazing sight much like the beautiful actress. Regardless of how the conversations went prior to starting construction any reason was a good reason to build it and a clever story to boot. The one-off car has covered headlights that “pop up” which were very modern for 1954 and side coves that were copied on the 1956 Corvette, it also has a rear hatchback. The gold paint is appropriately called Grigio Ingrid.Rosselini was on a roll and being an avid Ferrari owner he had a Ferrari 375MM Pininfarina spyder that had suffered an accident so he sent the car to coach builder Sergio Scaglietti to make a coupé for the street. The 1954 Mercedes 300SL gullwing was a styling influence and can be seen in the cab shape and back end of Scaglietti’s design.

Overdracht van de honderdvijftigste Simca voor de showroom bij dealer Auto Willemse in het Groothandelsgebouw, juni 1960.
Het Groothandelsgebouw of Groot Handelsgebouw is een bedrijfsverzamelgebouw aan het Stationsplein, naast Station Rotterdam Centraal. Het gebouw is een rijksmonument, ontworpen door architecten H.A. Maaskant en Ir. W. van Tijen. Groothandelsgebouw is zoals de naam in origine werd geschreven. Het was daarmee een "gebouw voor de groothandel". Begin 21ste eeuw vertrokken de groothandelaren naar de rand van de stad en transformeerde het gebouw naar een multifunctioneel bedrijfsverzamelgebouw.
Simca was een Frans automerk. De naam is een acroniem van Société Industrielle de Mécanique et de Carrosserie Automobile; een autofabriek die in 1934 te Nanterre werd opgericht door Enrico Teodoro Pigozzi (Henri Pigozzi).
Onder het merk Simca zijn heel wat bijzonder succesvolle auto's geproduceerd. In de jaren 50 boekte Simca successen met de Aronde, een goede middenklasser, en de Vedette, een grote limousine. Ook in de jaren 60 had Simca een kaskraker in huis: de Simca 1000, een kleine en wendbare wagen (drievolumenmodel) die veel ruimte bood. In de sportuitvoering (Rallye 1000 in drie uitvoeringen, zie foto) was het een haast onverslaanbare rallywagen in zijn klasse, naast de coupévariant bekend als Simca 1000 coupé. De jaren 70 boden in de kleinere middenklasse de Simca 1100, samen met de Renault 16 een van de eerste werkelijke hatchbacks op de markt. In de grotere middenklasse was er de Simca 1300/1500, opgevolgd door de 1301/1501. Dit waren grote sedans of stationwagons (Tourist genoemd).
