A pro-invasion Russian blogger was blown up in a St. Petersburg café on Sunday. Some of Putin’s mouthpieces have tried to blame the assassination on Ukraine, but the reality may be far more worrisome for Putin and his ruling cult.

Russian police have arrested a woman suspected of delivering a bomb that killed a prominent pro-war Russian military blogger in a blast in a cafe in central St Petersburg on Sunday, as authorities blamed Ukraine for the attack.

Vladlen Tatarsky, whose real name was Maxim Fomin, was killed by a bomb blast as he was hosting a discussion with other pro-war commentators at a cafe on the banks of the Neva River in the historic heart of St Petersburg.

Police said they had identified a woman called Darya Trepova as the suspect and that she was arrested in an apartment in St Petersburg after a search on Monday morning. Authorities said she was a supporter of the jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

In a statement, Russia’s national antiterrorism committee claimed the attack was “planned by the special services of Ukraine with the involvement of agents from those who had cooperated with the so-called Navalny Anti-Corruption Fund [Foundation]”.

While theoretically possible, it’s doubtful that Ukraine would waste time and resources on a small piece of shit like Vladlen Tatarsky (real name: Maxim Fomin).

It’s true that Tatarsky was a hatemonger – but so are a lot of Russian media personalities, many of them more high profile in the Putin media ecosystem. Tatarsky was a fairly typical Russian fascist blowhard.

Anton Gerashchenko in Ukraine posted a typical bit of a Tatarsky tirade.

Darya Trepova, the suspect in the killing, doesn’t seem to have any connection to Ukraine. It’s far more likely that she may have links to an anti-Putin underground engaged in partisan violence against the dictatorship.

ICYMI, a while back I posted this short doc by independent journalist Jake Hanrahan who spoke with members of the anti-Putin underground who were engaged in acts of sabotage against the régime.

It’s less politically damaging for Putin to have Russians believe that these acts are caused by Ukraine rather than by Russian partisans opposed to the war.

vaspider and callouts

People are adding likes to my post about when vaspider had a freakout and blocked me. Spider had reblogged from someone who was stereotyping a gay guy who didn't enjoy Brokeback Mountain for being yet another story where a gay man gets beaten to death. I pointed out the op was just expressing prejudice towards another queer person, Spider got super angry about it, etc etc.

You've all seen the pattern before, even if you don't know it yet. Spider basically pulled the 'don't you dare talk back' card because I challenged his sense of entitlement. People like that tend to have a real problem when someone criticizes them, because fragility. Dish it out but not take it, that sort of thing.

And like...that's okay? People get angry, they say mean and stupid things sometimes, and getting blocked isn't a big deal. No real harm done.

So, now that people are finding my old post, I went followed the threads to see why. Why are people interested in searching about Spider again? I saw some people voicing complaints that sounded legit and reasonable. My own experience with Spider is that he's a little arrogant and a little fragile, so I get it. And there are certainly positions he's taken, both in terms of politics and culture, that I think aren't great.

But then I came across the people who going after Spider for being Jewish. I saw the blogs still trying to spread lies involving abuse. And it reminded me of how easy it is for prejudiced and hateful people to join into the dogpile when callouts and criticism are involved.

If you've got a real, legitimate problem that you want to hash out, doing it on tumblr probably isn't a good idea. It might be better to just block and move on, because writing a callout means adding to a conversation already featuring liars and antisemites.

Another thing you tweeted recently was a comment in reference to John Mulaney bringing up Chappelle, having him as a surprise guest on his tour where he told a lot of his anti-trans jokes. And you were basically the only comedian that I saw speak out against that.

I mean, listen, I have friends who are trans—and that sounds like the worst way to start that conversation, right? But I really do, and I have fans who are trans and I’ve spoken to them about this and I’ve heard directly from them, and there is tremendous anxiety and uncomfortableness and sadness and hurt that it’s treated so flippantly and often dangerously by these people with giant audiences. And I don’t believe that John Mulaney has any kind of issues with the trans community personally. But at the same time, I don’t understand why you need Chappelle to come out onto the stage with an audience that have already paid to see you.

It’s not what they signed up for.

Yeah, exactly. So I did it, of course, as an honest statement that you should feel safe coming to my shows, that I’m not going to spring a leader in the anti-trans movement—it seems to be an issue he cares deeply about.

He can’t stop talking about it.

Yeah, I did it out of honesty and a little bit of snarky, like, “Fuck off.” And also as a message to other artists and comedians and musicians to be like, you know, feel free to speak out about this."
