Julian for the merm au is here!! I really wanted to give him dramatic, pretty scales and fins designs, tho I stole all the colors from his canon sprite — the inside of his jacket? Hella bright. Anyways he likes to chat up visitors and flirt and they had to jokingly put up a sign, in Cassius' pretty calligraphy, "Do Not Give Coffee To The Dramatic Merman," because even in this AU he's a coffee addict xD

Is it time to come out of hiding yet?? 🙈🙈🙈 I knew when I came back from New Zealand, Los Angeles and Arizonathat I would have a lot of content following the magnitude of shoots and meetups to get me though the slower weeks ahead after going back to work but little did I know what that would really mean...have I worked up the motivation to do an at home shoot? Nope. Am I a little jealous of people who have. For sure! I do feel like I have more free time to work on personal projects, edit photos from my New Zealand trip, etc. But you know what? I'm still working on that quarantine goal list I made myself 3 weeks ago and that's ok. 😴🤷‍♀️ So today just remember that If you see pretty photos on instagram and are feeling discouraged, chances are that the photo is older or the person finally had a chance to edit them with the break in normal work life that they're getting due to quarantine. Yamm, a Semitic/Canaanite God of the Sea and Storms, was borrowed into some Egyptian myths as one of the pantheon's adversaries. Not a demon like Apep, but not benevolent, either. 

Before anyone gets ideas, he ain’t gonna be in the main story of DEITIES. In fact he’s a concept that I’m still researching and who I’m not ready to answer much questions about right now (even in comments, but askbox is also closed for now). But I have some headcanons I’ll share under the cut for the time being.

Alright so in DEITIES, Yamm's a seafaring deity originating from a foreign realm (well, "foreign" relative to Duat); he had adapted to this lifestyle by adjusting his hybrid features to display his tentacles on his lower body. I.E He resembles a Cecaelia (octo-merm) the majority of the time.

In both original and adapted myths, Yamm's an adversarial god who like to collect treasure -- material and otherwise >> he kidnaps Astarte to make her his bride, and also threatens the other gods / holds them ransom to meet his demands, lest he send a tempest to flood the world. That is, of course, until a certain Egyptian Chaos god puts him in his place... [x]

Anyway! While I slowly consider how I might tackle this same myth in a future DEITIES side story, I ended up designing Yamm as an antagonistic figure for headcanons w/ friends -- the fish-like deity who Yamm's holding up there (and being a manipulative ass to) belongs to a friend, as part of some backstory. But I'm not ready to add Yamm to the DEITIES cast, or w/ answering questions about him just yet, because there are aspects of his character that are… difficult, to authentically play.

W/out misrepresenting his original pantheon, I want to learn more about Yamm before I decide how irredeemable I'm willing to make his character in DEITIES. Cuz the myths suggest he's about as nasty & cruel as most deities come, which would be an interesting challenge to consider.

2019

So Bray reminded me that I used to do these and I’m so thankful that he did because honestly this year needs one and I never write anymore so here we GOOOOOOOOOO.

My 2019 started in Times Square which I can’t say is my first choice of places to spend New Year's Eve, but that’s what was planned for the university program I was traveling with. So there I was in Times Square in a soggy paper headband and a yellow plastic poncho that ripped when my friend tried to join me in it. I drank a lot of overpriced gin and my roommate threw up in a subway grate outside McDonald's on 5th avenue. Truly a cinematic night.

As soon as I got home from New York I sent a confident email to Sled Island telling them that I really wanted to work with them on the festival that year doing anything remotely communications related. It turned out the Executive Director knew my boss at the label I work for, and the day I went in for a “chat” I walked out with an internship. I called my friend on my way out and we went for a drink. It was maybe the second week of the year and everything was coming up ROSIE.

So to clarify, I was still ushering at the university, working 20 hours a week at a cafe, working at the label once a week, working at the festival office once a week, and taking four classes. Everyone was fascinated with how busy my life was and I ate that shit UP. And it burnt me OUT.

So I found myself at an intake appointment at a counseling centre. It was really nice to be in a room with someone who knew nothing about me and just cry and feel sorry for myself.

Turns out I burnt out because I was working too much but I didn’t do anything to change it because I’m me and I will climb over anyone who gets in the way of my career. Including myself. Actually, I think I quit the ushering job in February because the shifts were only like three hours and it was a waste of my time. But the festival came and went, the winter semester ended, then the spring semester ended, and suddenly I was just taking one summer class and only had three jobs.

Societe was sold to new owners, so I moved to two new cafes. At I Love You Coffee Shop I met Merm, and she’s the best friend I met this year.

In the summer I promoted my first ever show at I Love You, and it was a raging success. I got home at 3am and at 4:30am my friend picked me up to drive to Vancouver. Vancouver was hot and beautiful, and though it was only a four-day trip, it was the first holiday I’d taken since New York, and I needed it very badly. The ocean does wonders for my mental health, and one day I will live on the coast.

I got home and finished the summer semester. I fucking passed music theory and finished all the requirements for my degree.

I got a job at the National Music Centre working events, and though it wasn’t exactly working the events that I wanted to, I met some cool people, and I’m really proud to say that I work there.

Sometime in October or November, I started doing macrame, and it turns out I really love it, and I am proud to say I finally have an adult hobby.

In November I graduated and two days later I left for my first tour with an artist on our label. We started in Toronto, had a conference and two shows in Montreal, and ended the short tour in New York. I found it difficult to travel and work, and it was draining for me to meet so many people at the conference and at shows, but I found it very rewarding after working so hard for the label for two years behind the scenes.

So.

I grew exponentially in my professional life in 2019, however, I neglected my relationships. Even though I’m still very career-focused, I want to take a step back next year to be a 23-year-old, make friends, make things, have some mental peace, and have a chance to get to know myself more.

I’m usually such an asshole about resolutions, but I’m making some for 2020.

1. I’m going to either write or play an instrument for at least 10 minutes a day.

2. I’m going to stop doing as much shit for free. This year I started to resent the idea of working in music because I was doing so much for free and all I was getting was depression in return.

Grammarly is telling me this whole piece sounds overly formal, so I’ll throw in this anecdote about going on a date with my sixth-grade “boyfriend” twelve years later:

His name is Adam, and one day back in February(?) he replied to my story on Instagram, so I thought I should probably follow him back after how many years. I did, and he cracked a joke about it, and we got talking and I was like I’m gonna pUt MySeLf OuT tHeRe because that’s what everyone fuckin tells me, and also I thought it would be hilarious to date my 6th grade boyfriend, so I asked him out. We went for coffee and it turns out he works for minimelts and travels globally for warhammer... so.

I’m starting a new monthly post! Since I’m so awful at getting things read lately, I thought I would sell some of my favorites to you!

Series: Mermaids of Eriana Kwai trilogy Titles: Ice Massacre ∴ Ice Crypt ∴ Ice Kingdom Author: Tiana Warner Genre: YA, Fantasy, wlw, Mythology > mermaids

  What it’s about:

As most of you know, I LOVE this series with all of my being. This will have some baby spoilers, but nothing more than what the blurb says, really. I promise I won’t ruin it for you!

The island of Eriana Kwai is on the brink of destruction. Merpeople have been hoarding all the fish and sending armies of mermaids to lure and kill fisherman for decades. After years and years of sending men out to cull the mermaids, they decide to send girls, who are not affected by the mermaid’s lure. Meela and nineteen of her peers have been trained for five years to kill mermaids, but there’s one problem for Meela, she was once best friends with a mermaid and she knows how similar to humans they really are. Over the course of Ice Massacre, Meela has to come to terms with the fact that may have feelings for a mermaid and also save her people from annihilation. She soon discovers it’s not the merpeople against them, it’s just one, and he’s relentless.

In Ice Crypt, Meela is searching for a weapon she hopes to try and trick the King with. He wants a trade, but she intends to use it against him. All the while, Lysi is trying to survive war under the water instead of above it, as well as hatch a plan to assassinate the king. I think this one is my favorite because we get to see how the merpeople live underwater and what exactly is going on with their leaders. And in Ice Kingdom, Meela and Lysi are once again separated, but we get a whole new perspective of a Navy Seal. He’s on the outside of the whole situation, but he has his own decisions to make in order to save lives. Will Lysi and Mee be reunited? Will everything work out in the end? I dunno, you’ll have to read it and find out ’cause I’m sure as hell not going to tell you.

Why I love it:

I found a post on Tumblr two years ago, about two months before the sequel was due. It praised Ice Massacre with a fervor that I now have. It’s the mermaid series I never knew I needed. I had read one other series that just wasn’t what I thought it was going to be and I was left disappointed and sad. Most of the mermaid books I would find were romance based, about turning human, or discovering the MC was actually a mermaid all along. This one is nothing like that. Romance takes a backseat; it’s all about coming into yourself as a person and acknowledging that you can be loyal to your people but also be happy with who you are and what you want.

On the whole, I just love this series. It’s everything I ever needed and wanted and I’m always rereading it when I need a pick-me-up or when I need something to get me out of a slump. Not to mention, Tiana is a lovely human being who loves horses and always replies when tagged in something. She and artist April Pierce are working together to create a graphic novel, due this winter. They will release it, page by page, on Patreon. I will definitely be linking it as soon as it’s up and running. There are seven pages posted here, if you want to see what it’s going to look like!

Also, keep your eyes peeled for her new novel, not yet titled, “a science fiction novel about a young woman who gets an internship at an aerospace company and discovers her boss is a supervillain,” (from this interview). I can’t wait to see how that one will go!

Why you’ll love it:

It’s got strong and capable warrior women, all native, from an island off the west coast of Canada. There’s girl love and coming out in hilarious but nonchalant ways, and wonderful support systems and families. It checks all my boxes (minus witches). It’s action packed, wholesome, and so much fun.

There are a few things that can be triggering, like killing, blood and gore, domestic abuse of a side character, and undertones of homophobia and racism from some characters (it’s not blatant, but one could see the hatred of merms to be racist/xenophobic and Meela’s parents take some convincing about the whole lesbian thing). Also, most of the people on Eriana are convinced merpeople aren’t intelligent beings, but more like sharks, no matter how many time Meela tells them differently.

Anytime anyone asks for a recommendation, I usually recommend this. I just can’t praise it enough! Let me know if you’ve read it or if I’ve sparked an interest in you to read it! I love talking about it with others!

Here's Muriel for the Merm AU! I decided on a cross of several fish for him, but mostly Goliath Grouper since they fit really well. I like the thought of him having rounded fins and a softer appearance despite the stuff he's been thru, and tried to keep his story close to canon and consider the consequences manacles would have on a merm, etc. He's doing much better tho! In this AU instead of chickens he keeps sea slugs, and tries to watch over visiting kids because he worries they'll fall into the tank... they lean so far forwards against the glass... children pls...

This is by @maxineart and I'm so happy that it's my FIRST original piece of art! The majority of her pieces at these ADORABLE minis or "Itty Bitty". I know the frame is 3in x 3in so you can imagine how small that Belle is. She has a set of Belle, Cinderella, Ariel, and Tiana. Disney princesses AND villains have been merm-ified. She's even done several Broadway minis such as Chicago, Hamilton, Moulin Rouge, Wicked, and more. There's even a Guy Fierri mini! 🤣😂 My personal FAVORITE sets which she currently working on (as of 7/1/20) are the Gotham Vixens: Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman! 😍 When she does a set of one character she'll do usually about 6 to 9 different poses or outfits. Hey,

so my phone is kinda screwy right now. the battery is shot, far as i can tell, and now for some reason most of my apps aren't functioning properly. facebook, tumblr, twitter, evernote, instagram, and pinterest are suddenly logging me out every time i close the app (this hasn't happened before), while all my google apps (gmail, youtube, drive) have apparently decided to not log me in at all even after i've put in the username and password (i tried this on all my google accounts, none of them worked). i'm going to try to stop by a place today to see if i can get the battery (at least) fixed, but i'm not sure yet whether the app thing is a result of that or not, so the jury's out on that one. i'm just writing this as a heads-up for any folks who try to contact me through those platforms. i can still access most of them on my computer, but i won't be doing so nearly as often, so just know that. if any of you have a burning need to contact me, let me know and i can send you my phone number. that, at least, seems to still be working. -merm
