I’m literally so tired of people saying that its gross how Kuvira and Baatar Jr were dating/engaged because he was her “adoptive brother.” Here’s the catch though: Suyin never officially adopted Kuvira. She just took her in and gave her a home and provided for her - which technically means that Suyin is her foster mother. What foster families typically do is take in kids who need help and assistance and provide a normal home-like environment for them until someone else, or their own parents come back to reclaim them into their possession (which is technically what Kuvira’s parents promised her but never actually did, according to ROTE) especially if their parents left them out on the side of the street to someone who could probably take better care of their child, such as Suyin. Suyin never signed any official documents stating that she now owned Kuvira as a legal parent or guardian, she was just doing Kuvira’s parents a favor and acting as caretaker for a supposedly short time-being.
What Kuvira’s parents did was essentially send their daughter away for therapy and mental support, because she was a problem child and they could do nothing to help her themselves. This is basically the equivalent of sending someone to a psychiatric ward or something along those lines. Su even said it herself: Kuvira was like a daughter to her. Any reasonable parent, or person for that matter, would regard their adopted child as part of their family and treat them as if they were their own. We all know Suyin did not allude to this. She definitely did not consider Kuvira as a daughter, legitimate or not. She only saw her as her pupil, someone to pass on their teachings to. Suyin could of went out of her way like a decent person, seeing that Kuvira’s parents didn’t come back to fetch her daughter after a long time, and gotten some legal adoption papers to officially accept Kuvira into the Beifong family. But she didn’t. She could have, but she didn’t. Suyin knew what she signed up for when she made a deal with Kuvira’s parents to take her in and train her and fix her temperamental behavior. But obviously they didn’t hold their end of the bargain and just totally left their daughter with this bourgeoisie woman. From this we know the type of boundary that Suyin places between literal family and pseudo-family.
Therefore, it is totally okay that Baavira exists as a ship and should keep sailing. Baatar Jr and Kuvira are not blood-related or legally related. He was her foster sister. Someone who just lived under the same roof as him for a time-being. Suyin never gave Kuvira the same last name as the rest of her family and she wasn’t even in the god-forsaken family photo on Suyin’s frickin’ desk.
End of rant.
