Checking in with SCOTT CAAN
The Daily Courier
6 Jan 2023
BY GEORGE DICKIE
In playing a Philadelphia police officer who is reunited with his missing son after seven years, Scott Caan found himself in unfamiliar waters. As a matter of fact, the character’s unique quandary makes it one that he’s sure no actor has ever played.
In “Alert: Missing Persons Unit,” an hourlong procedural drama that premieres Sunday, Jan. 8, on Fox (before taking its regular Monday time slot the following night), Caan (“Hawaii Five-0”) stars as Jason Grant, a Philly cop who is a member of the department’s Missing Persons Unit, who is reunited with his son Keith (Graham Verchere, “Stargirl”) years after the boy disappeared.
So while Jason and his ex-wife and fellow cop Nikki (Dania Ramirez, “Maids”) are overjoyed to have their boy back, they can’t help but notice things about the teen that don’t seem right and tell them he may not be their child. Which, Caan says, presented him with what he calls an “acting problem.”
“This idea of Dania and my character are trying to figure out if this kid is our son or not is really something that’s kind of unprecedented,” he explains. “You know, it’s not something you can go research, it’s (not) something you can talk to somebody who’s experienced . ... It’s something that you really have to figure out and dig into and it’s a complicated idea to try to figure out if this kid is our kid or not.”
“I read (the script) and I was like, ‘S..., I don’t know what I would do in these situations. I don’t know how I would act.’ ”
But while the role at times left him at a loss, Caan is thankful he had a very easy rapport from day one with his scene partner Ramirez.
“I don’t want to be too pretentious and talk about acting,” the son of “The Godfather” actor James Caan says, “(but she) brings a certain sensitivity out of me that I haven’t really been able to touch before . ... I think she’s great.”
Full name: Scott Andrew Caan
Birth date: Aug. 23, 1976
Birthplace: Los Angeles
Family ties: He and partner Kacy Byxbee have an 8-year-old daughter, Josie; is the son of actors James Caan and Sheila Ryan
TV credits include: “Entourage,” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “Vice Principals”
Movie credits include: “A Boy Called Hate” (1995), “Enemy of the State” (1998), “Varsity Blues” (1999), “Boiler Room” (2000), “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001), “Ocean’s Twelve” (2005), “Friends With Money” (2006), “Ocean’s Thirteen” (2007), “Meet Dave” (2008), “A Beginner’s Guide to Endings” (2010), “Rock the Kasbah” (2015)
Did you know: In the 1990s, was a member of the hip-hop group The Whooliganz under the pseudonym Mad Skillz; has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu
Favorite book: “There’s a book called ‘Rule of the Bone’ that was always one of my favorite books. I’m a big (Charles) Bukowski guy. ‘Women’ was one of my favorite books.”
Favorite movie: “I’d say my all-time favorites would probably be maybe ‘Raging Bull,’ any Hal Ashby movie, ‘Thief.’ ‘Buffalo ‘66’ is definitely one of my favorite movies. There’s a movie called ‘The Two of Us,’ this Claude Berri movie, a French movie ... . I used to be kind of a movie nerd. I’m not as much now but I could list off 10, 20, 30 of my favorite movies.”
Favorite musical artists: “I would say A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, the Smiths and Joy Division.”

NCIS: Los Angeles aired its final episode on May 21. One day later, fans learned that would not be the last time they saw at least one of their favorite characters.
LL Cool J reprised his role as Sam Hanna in the NCIS: Hawai’i Season 2 finale, to help out Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) and Kate Whistler (Tori Anderson) in Caracas. Though he offered further assistance, Tennant insisted she’d be OK. Immediately after the episode aired, CBS announced that LL Cool J will be recurring in Season 3.
But even before that, we couldn’t help but wonder if we’d see any of the LA characters again, especially since members of the three teams — in D.C. (NCIS) and Hawai’i — teamed up earlier in the 2022-2023 season. There are the other shows. There’s the possibility of a revival of some sort, especially given what’s happened with other shows. (Just look at Criminal Minds; it lives on at Paramount+ with Evolution.)
“I think that’s very possible. Since we have done a crossover, some of the characters have appeared on the other shows, so it’s quite possible that they end up making appearances there,” NCIS: LA executive producer R. Scott Gemmill said when we talked about the finale, but added, “That’s sort of, at this point, a decision beyond my capability.”
And would Daniela Ruah, who played Kensi Blye going back to the NCIS backdoor pilot episodes, be up for reprising her role? “Technically, I’ve actually played Kensi in two extra episodes from those that we’ve counted on our show, and then it’s actually a third one if you count Hawaii Five-0 as well. This woman is such a huge part of me,” she told us. “In regard to me showing up on another NCIS, it hasn’t been discussed, talked about, or looked into. Obviously, I don’t know. I guess I’ll cross that bridge if it comes my way.”
We’ll have to wait and see for now, but at least we know we’re getting more Sam Hanna!

Haaai September!!
All my shows are coming back, yay!
(technically, not all, but... nvrmnd) I want to rate them from those I most want to see again, to those I will see, but will I care...
First goes: The Cleaning Lady
Oh, boy, that first season knocked my socks off. It was clever, it was different, there was so much unexpected in it, in terms of storyline itself, but also on a meta level, in the thought behind the show.
It didn’t give me any hyperfixation, so there’s no nervous energy waiting for it. Just pure joy.
Characters I love? Well, Arman Morales and Thony De La Rosa of course. But I love Thony’s friend Fiona so much as well, and her teenage son Chris, who I hope will have a bigger role this season, because the actor who plays him seems to be absolutely brilliant young rising star. Remember this name: Sean Lew. :)
Overall, it’s a 10/10
The rest goes under, because it got long-ish. ;p
The Rookie -- awaiting with excitement. :) I adore Lucy Chen. Tim Bradford has mild hyperfixation potential, but even without it, he’s a character I want to watch every week. And, after five years of slow burn, I’m ready to ship them. That’s my pace, lol. Also, I love all the friendships between various characters here. 9/10
The Resident -- I still like Matt Czuchry, and I hope to see some angst. It’s not a very angsty show, but it has its moments... Not sure what to expect. Not shipping anything romantically or friend-shippy, but if I were to choose, I’d rather he got closer with Billy, than with Cade. Oh. And I appreciate how they write Bell’s struggle with MS. Overall -- 9/10
NCIS Hawaii -- this is the show that has the biggest potential to disappoint me this season. It’s the show’s second season, so it’s almost a given. I have some thoughts which might be hyperfixation-inducing, but I’m not able to draw them out of very vague on-screen hints anymore. So. Not likely to happen (me ten years ago would have written ten fics already, though...). Between 2/10 and 8/10, ha...
Seal Team -- I will drop it. I’m only planning to watch the first couple of episodes. It’s not that I’m upset that Clay is leaving (dying?), but I cared about him the most, and the show as a whole won’t really keep my interest. 5/10 for those first couple of epis. ETA: apparently the first episode is already up, huh?
Manifest -- I don’t even know why I started to watch it this summer, and I think this season is the show’s last? But I’ll see it through, lol. Out of the blue. 5/10
SWAT -- I’ll watch it probably out of habit, rather than anything else. I may drop it some time this season. 2/10
FBI -- out of habit. No emotional attachment. 0/10
I’m also watching Outlander and I freakin’ LOVE IT, but I’m on season 4, and I don’t even know when the new season starts. 10/10
And the new shows I will be giving chances...
The Ark -- who knows when? Do they even have a premiere date set? This looks like my kind of show, sci-fi, interesting characters. Can be exciting. May also flop...
Quantum Leap -- I watched the OG and I liked it back in the day, so I kind of have to give it a 4-episodes trial run.
East New York -- the premise got me curious, but if they don’t have any good-looking troubled male character, I’ll probably only give it a 4-episodes trial run. Unless it turns out really good.
So Help Me Todd -- this one I’m really curious about, mostly because of Marcia Gay Harden who I loved on Code Black. And the premise sounds like my cup of tea. We’ll see where it goes.

When it comes to JAG and the forever-expanding NCIS Universe that it begat, “It’s all connected” (if we may borrow a phrase from Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb).
A spinoff of JAG, the NCIS mothership on March 28 will crossover with its own latest offshoot, NCIS: Hawai’i, in back-to-back episodes that send Special Agents Nick Torres and Jessica Knight to the Aloha State (with a couple other NCIS cast members appearing if not going along for the ride).
NCIS: Hawai’i had its first quasi-crossover of sorts when an early episode of the freshman CBS drama revealed the role that none other than Leroy Jethro Gibbs played in nudging alone Jane Tennant’s own career as an NCIS Special Agent. But the official two-part crossover event will solidify NCIS: Hawai’i‘s place in the Extended JAG/NCIS Universe (JNCISU?).
On this special occasion, TVLine revisits many of the ways that JAG and NCIS characters have visited other CBS series (including one instance you might have forgotten about!), either in one-off or recurring guest spots, or in one- or two-way crossover events.
Which of these crossed streams/character team-ups do you most fondly recall?
JAG
NCIS‘ backdoor spinoff pilot came in the form of a JAG Season 8 two-parter, in which Special Agent Gibbs’ team investigated the murder of a lieutenant — and Commander Harmon “Harm” rabb Jr.’s possible role in it. In addition to Mark Harmon, future NCIS cast members Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette and David McCallum appeared in the planted pilot, as Tony, Abby and Ducky.
In the years since, JAG characters such as Harm, Lieutenant Colonel Sarah “Mac” MacKenzie, Lt. Bud Roberts and Rear Admiral A.J. Chegwidden have popped up on NCIS: Los Angeles and or NCIS.
Fun fact: NBC pretty famously bailed on JAG after one season, at which point CBS “saved” the military/legal drama and eventually spun it off into a 40-season (and counting?) NCIS franchise.
NCIS
In addition to the backdoor pilot episodes that eventually sired NCIS: Los Angeles (at the end of Season 6) and NCIS: New Orleans (near the end of Season 11), NCIS has received visits from JAG characters such as Lt. Bud Roberts (played by Patrick Labyorteaux, pictured), Rear Admiral A.J. Chegwidden (John M. Jackson) and Faith Coleman (Alicia Coppola).
Next up: NCIS Hawai’i Special Agent Jane Tennant (played by Vanessa Lachey) helps kick off NCIS‘ two-part crossover with its latest spinoff.
NCIS: LOS ANGELES
In addition to receiving early-on visits from NCIS‘ Abby, Tony (pictured) and Director Leon Vance, NCIS: LA in Season 3 had a two-way crossover with Hawaii Five-0‘s Danny Williams and Chin Ho Kelly (played by Scott Caan and Daniel Dae Kim), while Kensi went stag to Five-0 during its second season.
More recently, JAG leads David James Elliott and Catherine Bell reprised their roles as Harm and Mac for an arc at the end of LA’s 10th season, while John M. Jackson has thus far made a half dozen appearances as JAG‘s Chegwidden.
HAWAII FIVE-0
In addition to the aforementioned Season 2 visit from NCIS: LA‘s Kensi (who was enlisted by Joe White to review a video of John McGarrett with Governor Jameson and Wo Fat), Five-0 had a full-on two-way crossover with NCIS: Los Angeles the following season.
Five-0 also had a two-way crossover with Magnum P.I. (though neither Alex O’Loughlin nor Scott Caan were involved), and Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park and Taylor Wily once guest-starred on MacGyver as Chin Ho, Kono and Kamekona.
MACGYVER
The Season 1 episode “Flashlight” saw Mac & Co. get an assist from Hawaii Five-0‘s Chin Ho Kelly and Kono Kalakaua, with Kamekona also putting in an appearance.
Also, after Five-0 had signed off, Jorge Garcia popped by MacGyver as conspiracy theorist Jerry Ortega, reuniting the actor with fellow Lost alum Henry Ian Cusick.
NCIS: NEW ORLEANS
NCIS: New Orleans during its seven-season run enjoyed visits from NCIS characters such as Ducky, former FBI agent Tobias Fornell (played by Joe Spano), CGIS Special Agent Abigail Borin (Diane Neal, pictured) and SECNAV Sarah Porter (Leslie Hope).
SCORPION
Early into Scorpion‘s freshman run, NCIS: Los Angeles front woman Linda Hunt guest-starred as Hetty Lange, who was recruited to help Walter’s team look the part as they went undercover to protect a priceless art exhibit.
MAGNUM P.I.
In addition to its two-way crossover with fellow island drama Hawaii Five-0 — which involved Meaghan Rath, Katrina Law, and Beulah Koale as Tani Rey, Quinn Liu and Junior Reigns — Magnum is no stranger to guest appearances by the likes of Kimee Balmilero as Dr. Noelani Cunha, Dennis Chun as Sgt. Duke Lukela, Taylor Wily’s Kamekona and Shawn Mokuahi Garnett’s Flippa.
(As for the issue of the Magnum, P.I. TV show’s theme song having once been sung by Five-0 characters, that was “explained” here.)
NCIS: HAWAI'I
In Part 1 of the two-way crossover — airing Monday, March 28 at 9/8c and titled “Starting Over” – NCIS’ Special Agent Nick Torres (played by Wilmer Valderrama) gets invited by NCIS Special Agent Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) to come to Hawai’i, when she gets a lead on a witness from a case they worked on together.

FAN EXPO Philadelphia Returns May 3-5, With Lopez, Gunn, Day, McKenzie Among First Stars
Tumblr media
Fans of all things pop culture have marked their calendars for the return of FAN EXPO Philadelphia, set for May 3-5 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. With the show fewer than four months away, the guest roster for the pop culture extravaganza gets off to a huge start with the first nine standouts in what will be a star-studded lineup.
First to the post are headliners Mario Lopez (“Saved by the Bell,” “Access Hollywood”), Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, “Gilmore Girls”), Felicia Day (“The Guild,” “Dragon Age: Redemption”), Ben McKenzie (“Gotham,” “The O.C.”), Holly Marie Combs (“Charmed,” “Picket Fences”), Adam Savage (“MythBusters,” “Unchained Reaction”), Michelle Hurd (“Star Trek: Picard,” “Law & Order: SVU”), Sofia Boutella (Rebel Moon, The Mummy) and Jason Lee (“My Name is Earl,” The Incredibles).
Lopez first gained attention for his role as “A.C. Slater” on “Saved by the Bell” from 1989-1993 and its reboot in 2020-21. He also served as host for the syndicated entertainment newsmagazine shows “Extra” and “Access Hollywood.” He also starred in the police drama “Pacific Blue” and had a recurring role on the daytime drama “The Bold and the Beautiful.”
Gunn played "Kraglin" in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and its sequels in 2017 and 2023, as well as providing the physical performance via motion capture for "Rocket Raccoon" in the films plus Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder. He also portrayed "Kirk Gleason" throughout the seven-year run of "Gilmore Girls" among his 60+ acting credits.
Day has more than 100 credits, from films to TV series to voice work, with many highlights including a 66-episode run on “The Guild” and recurring spots on “Supernatural” and “Eureka.” She teamed with original series host Joel Hodgson for a five-year run on the recent iteration of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” and had her first big fandom exposure in a recurring role as “Vi” on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
McKenzie, who portrayed the lead character “James Gordon” in the hit Fox TV show “Gotham,” was born in Austin, Texas, appearing in theater productions and a few TV shows including “The District,” “JAG” and “Mad TV” before the success of “The O.C.” launched him into stardom. His film roles have included Junebug opposite Amy Adams and 88 Minutes with Al Pacino. The University of Virginia graduate’s starring role in “Gotham,” which regularly hit nearly seven million weekly viewers, followed the Commissioner’s life before Batman came onto the scene.
Combs starred in "Charmed," which ran for eight seasons and has adopted a huge, loyal following since, as "Piper Halliwell," one of three witch sisters fighting evil in modern day San Francisco. That followed her breakout role in 88 episodes of the hit series "Picket Fences" and later led to appearances in more than 30 series and movies and a long run as "Ella Montgomery" on "Pretty Little Liars."
Savage, best known for his work as the co-host of the Discovery Channel series “MythBusters” and “Unchained Reaction,” has made his mark in the entertainment world as a special effects designer and fabricator, actor, educator, television personality and producer. His special effects work on such films as Space Cowboys (2000), Galaxy Quest (1999), Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999), Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002), The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and others earned him acclaim that led to the “MythBusters” gig and front-facing success.
Hurd has appeared in a wide variety of projects, notably in regular roles in “Star Trek: Picard,” “Blindspot,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “The Glades” and “Law & Order: SVU.” She had her first extended exposure as “Dana Kramer” on the daytime drama “Another World,” and last year co-starred opposite Jonathan Bennett and Cedric the Entertainer in the feature film The Plus One.
Boutella played the lead character in last year’s Netflix action-adventure feature Rebel Moon: Part One: A Child of Fire, a follow up to her role in “Rogue Heroes” a year earlier. She co-starred opposite Tom Cruise in the fantasy-adventure film The Mummy in 2017 and was also top billed in the science fiction drama Settlers and Prisoners of the Ghostland alongside Nicolas Cage and Nick Cassavetes in 2001 and the horror film Climax in 2018.
A native of Southern California, Lee is a photographer, producer, director, and actor. Having established a successful career as a professional skateboarder during the sport's pivotal late 80s and early 90s period, Lee would go on to pursue acting, which would lead to working in film, television, and voiceover, and with such directors as Kevin Smith, Lawrence Kasdan, Cameron Crowe and Rebecca Miller.
