continuing to rotate margaret houlihan in my head (it will continue), and today's observation is that she NEEDS structure, and becomes a holy terror when she's trying to create it herself. not to always be comparing my faves to dogs (affectionate) but she's an Experienced Handlers Only working dog, and under henry's "let's just all be cool" style of leadership, she gets nervy and starts biting people. she's constantly going over his head because he's not giving orders The Right Way. she can't let it slide when hawkeye and trapper aren't toeing the line, even though it'll only bring her grief. she bullies her staff over minor infractions, and it's not even effective!! because while they're in henry's office crying about her harsh methods, she's also in there complaining that she can't control them.
then potter shows up, and her behavior changes. the second he calls her to attention, her objection to her and frank losing power disappears. she's not chaining nurses to their beds anymore. she appeals to him when she disagrees in deluge, but there's no threat that she'll do an end run around him, which used to be her go-to move. she even relaxes long enough to join in the jeep fun for a minute (even though it's "beneath her" as an officer), and enjoys it! she's not nice, her personality hasn't changed, but it's all bark. she's content to have a solid place in the pecking order and is no longer fueling chaos by frantically trying to control it.

The Joker is Wild is an episode that really doesnt work where it is in the show
the idea that BJ is set off by like. jealous rage or whatever over Hawkeye comparing him to Trapper just doesnt work so late in the show when there's been 0 indication that BJ is jealous about Trapper at all. it feels like it comes out of nowhere, just a half-assed sort of reason given to set him off
ive mentioned this before here and I know its a hot take within this fandom but the supposed Trapper Complex just doesnt exist. in the 8 seasons that BJ is present in the show, I can think of three times Trapper's name comes up around him
Period of Adjustment, where he brings up that he feels like he hates Trapper. should be noted that BJ here is at about the lowest point we see him at, he's in complete despair, and he's also blind drunk. he also specifically brings up that he feels this way because Trapper has gone home- it has nothing to do with Hawkeye
Depressing News, Hawkeye refers to BJ as being the 'same size, same shape' as Trapper, and BJ's reaction can be construed as being not exactly pleased about it. I think this reads more as him just not being happy about literally being called Trapper's replacement, not him being jealous
then, of course, The Joker is Wild
because of this it really just doesnt make sense for BJ to suddenly have this jealousy in The Joker is Wild, not this late in the show. it would've honestly worked so much better if this episode happened back in season 4, because then you could've made that jealousy believable with BJ still establishing himself in camp and Hawkeye still dealing with Trapper's departure. but as it is, set in season 11, it really just doesnt work. its such a He Would Not Fucking Say That episode
#mash#bj hunnicutt#its one of those episodes I want to rewrite cause I think it had all the potential to be a very very good episode#like I said I would've set it in season 4#and I would've made it clear that Hawkeye has been comparing BJ to Trapper a lot#and in some not-so-nice ways where he's said Trapper was better at X Trapper's way with Y was better etc#(not done maliciously of course he's grieving his best friend leaving but it still stings)#and BJ finally has enough when the prank thing comes up and Hawkeye is going on about how great it was when it was him and Trapper#so he decides to get back at Hawkeye with a series of escalating pranks#there wouldnt be a bet element here he wouldnt rope anybody else in on it#he's still new he's still establishing himself and this is him just desperately trying to be seen as his own person#not just Trapper's replacement#and finally he goes too far and it blows up in his face somehow#maybe Hawkeye gets hurt#and everyone's rightfully pissed off with BJ about it! he's been mean he's been acting out what the hell is wrong with him?#and BJ feels fucking horrible about it and explains himself and how he's just so sick of feeling like#all anyone sees him as is Trapper's replacement#at this point implying Hawkeye's not the only one who's done the comparing and everyone can reflect on that a bit#BJ then avoids Hawkeye for a few days because he feels so awful about what happened#until Hawkeye hunts him down and forces the conversation to happen#BJ apologizes profusely and says he was being stupid and Hawkeye's like yeah you were being stupid#but he also admits he was stupid to not see what constantly comparing BJ to Trapper was doing#and apologizes for making him feel like he was just a replacement and not his friend#have a real heart to heart about it!! BJ character depth episode!!#it could've been so interesting the potential was there just not in season 11#a plot line like that just didnt have a place anymore#and im mad about it 40 years later#invents time travel so I can write MASH episodes#anyways.#can you tell I think about this a lot

“My friends, for your amusement and bemusement, I give you the human person. Thumb and fingers flexing madly, straining to keep aloft the leaden realities of life: ignorance, death and madness. Thus we create for ourselves the illusion that we have power, that we are in control, that we are loved.”
This is a philosophical statement on the human condition, not a personal statement - but it is a revealing philosophical statement, as something Hawkeye apparently believes.
Hawkeye’s not singling himself out here as unloved. He’s saying love, like power and control, is fundamentally fake.
So what does that mean for someone who is as heartfelt and loving as Hawkeye?
It’s an existentialist statement - these things aren’t real but part of being human is creating them and behaving as though they are real measurable forces, to combat the true “leaden realities,” even if it’s fundamentally futile because death, at least, will always win out in the end.
It’s why Hawkeye is so loving, and so emotionally intense wrt his important relationships - because love, unlike death or ignorance or madness, isn’t an inherent state of being that can or will be bestowed upon you for simply existing, it’s something you have to work to create for yourself, and it’s something you have to be willing to suspend your disbelief to experience, like - his theatrical delivery might suggest - enjoying a good show.
The way humanity fights the “realities” of death, ignorance, and madness is by creating the “illusions” of power, control, and love. And he in particular throws himself into them - his god complex, his need to turn his feelings into actions to maintain the illusion of control, and his insatiable desire for love, from platonic to romantic to familial to physical to just positive attention. This is why he’s so passionate.
Like I really don’t think it’s a cynical statement taking the whole speech into consideration - it’s actually pretty inspiring imo, it’s your basic positive spin on nihilism, the concept that we create our own meaning. The whole last bit of this monologue is a glowing ode to humanity and its achievements, both great and mundane, and love and creation in opposition to destruction (our greatest moment isn’t clenching a fist but holding a hand open to cradle a glass of wine or a loved one’s face), and this is the conclusion of that speech.
For Hawkeye, the illusion of love is humanity’s greatest achievement.

on Hawkeye and Charles and “Going Too Far”
So I remember back in... I want to say season 2 or 3... Hawkeye and Trapper recorded Margaret and Frank without their knowing and broadcast it over the camp -- I can’t remember the exact context, but it was deeply personal (and I believe sexual too), and Margaret was humiliated
and I think that’s the first time we get a clear, canon indication (and not just personal feelings) that sometimes Hawkeye goes too far. We even get the “I was too busy going too far” line
I feel like right now Hawkeye is going... very far. And it’s not necessarily something the show itself is doing (I think) to foreshadow a careening off the cliff type of thing, though I do choose to read it in that direction, because eventually he will, I’m sure....
first we had the episode where he crashes the peace-talks, still wearing his bloodied surgery clothes, as an impulsive reaction to finding out that he won’t be allowed to go home when he thought he would. and he very much doesn’t face any punishment for that (not in the moral sense, but I was really wondering how the military would react to that... interesting that it was treated as a non-issue, and I’ll get back to that in a bit)
and now we’ve had the episode in which Charles goes non-verbal (Charles goes non-verbal!!!!!) because he’s feeling... very very similar feelings to Hawkeye’s in above-mentioned episode. He’s watching his life slip away from him, the life he wanted to lead, in favour of something he never consented to do, in a place he never consented to be in
and when BJ and Hawkeye needle him, because they both -- but honestly I think especially Hawkeye and BJ follows his lead (because when Hawkeye wasn’t there BJ and Charles briefly found some common ground....) -- have a tendency to mark people down as “Good and therefore their feelings are worth respecting” or “Bad and therefore their feelings are not worth respecting”
so when Charles does something that is entirely within his right and totally inoffensive -- goes non-verbal, because he’s done with everything -- they take it as a personal challenge from someone they don’t quite see as Good/A Person, rather than as an expression of someone wishing to have his boundaries respected
and they absolutely go too far. messing with Charles like they do is probably the worst thing either of them has done on the show so far (I think... I’d need to watch back to the first three seasons, because some of the stuff against Margaret was quite nasty -- although the animosity there had a different, deeper flavour to the general “we just don’t get on” happening with Charles, it was still rooted in sexism a lot of the time)
I think the episode places the right with Charles, but it doesn’t quite respect the weight his feelings either -- he’s angry and the episode says “that’s fair, and now you got your own back, the end (until next time),” but if we’re doing some deeper analysis into how it might actually feel for him, I think you can easily read some deep loneliness (he’s disliked by everyone, even though he often does try), alienation (for all some of his stuff is snobbishness, he genuinely doesn’t have much of anything in common with most people here and he gets shut out when he tries to bond with what he’s got to bond with... awkwardly enough maybe he actually does have a lot in common with Hawkeye, but neither of them are ready for that acknowledgement), and overwhelm in a situation he’s completely unequipped for -- and a lot of all of that is so autistic coded, it may as well just be canon (NON VERBAL!???)
and then he’s not even allowed the decency of being left alone
I wonder how this dynamic will continue, because I’m 99% sure that they’ll be friends eventually, and also that this won’t be referred to again, but there definitely is some work that Hawkeye and BJ need to do to meet Charles halfway, because taking away Charles’ “Charles-ness” in order for him to be friends with them would flatten his character... so I’m interested in how that will happen
Charles isn’t Frank Burns. When Hawkeye and BJ mess with him the tone is much nastier, because Charles -- while he’s not always a saint and did a couple of things in season 6 (although I think only early on) -- isn’t actually someone who has any power over them in return, nor does he -- these days -- tend to abuse what power he has. At worst he’s standoffish and cares overly much about rich-people “propriety,” but it’s not actually anything that can do anything to anyone here
also I think this is very in-character for Hawkeye, in the sense that it’s got precedence -- indulging (and not being given any reason to consider the repercussions of) his unhealthier manic impulsiveness, in both of these episodes, is something we’ve seen happen before
and it not being recognised as unhealthy behaviour/in the second example bullying (in the same way as Charles isn’t being recognised on his own terms either) because of the exact opposite (but same) reason to Charles -- “oh that’s just Hawkeye, he’s like that sometimes and then you reel him in again and laugh about it.” Again, not necessarily what the show is intending, but hey, he’s recently been told that he won’t be able to go home, it fits very nicely with how one might expect him to act out
and unfortunately Charles feels like he’s in the crossfires of Hawkeye’s own issues -- makes you wonder who the antagonist is (well, neither of them, but it’s complicated)

I just found your blog today can you please explain or point out a post that explains the MASH timeloop thing? I love the show but I've never heard anyone talk abt it that way before
oh yay hurray ive been waiting for an excuse to talk about this lmao sorry this is long
ok so basically maeve (my gf) and i started watching mash for the first time about a month ago and we started joking about it being like the characters were stuck in a time loop mostly because the same basic episode format is repeated over and over, because it's a sitcom from the 70s and the episodes arent meant to be watched en masse where you can start noticing all the little repetitions and plot holes and inconsistencies that naturally occur in longform tv
but then i started to pay attention to the dates being mentioned in the show - famously the korean war never technically ended, but american troops were involved in active on the ground fighting between 1950 and 1953, so the entire 11 seasons of mash have to be squeezed into that three year period. with 251 episodes occurring within 1,129 days, that gives every episode about 4.5 days of real time. so it works right? no time loop right? well wait a sec
for the first 5 seasons or so of mash they give very consistent dates about when things are happening. for example, bj arrives in korea in september of 1952, at the start of season 4. colonel potter arrives about a week after him, and talks about how he has 18 months left before his retirement. that gives us about 7 months for the shows final 7 seasons to take place in, meaning that by the episode 'point of view' in season 7 we should be around december of 1952. in that episode the pov character starts writing a letter home and in the corner he writes the date:
Tumblr media
september of 1951. ok, could be that this episode isn't meant to take place in the regular timeline of the season - maybe for some reason its just like, a random flashback episode. but bj, charles, and potter are all present, even though none of them got to korea until 1952. now i KNOW that this is not like, the True Hidden Secret Lore of MASH, this is the writers realizing they were running out of road and turning back the clock a bit to accommodate for how long the show was running on. but play in my time loop space with me please
more talking points:
consistent jokes about time zones and how difficult it is to call the states because "our today is their yesterday but if you call them now it might not reach them until our tomorrow and by that point our yesterday will be their today"
hawkeye's increasing mania over the seasons and his conviction that the war will never end, comparing the camp to dante's inferno multiple times. maeve once pointed out that the closer hawkeye comes to realizing that he's trapped in a time loop the closer he gets to being institutionalized - and what does the series finale cold open onto ? hawkeye in a mental institution. the only way out is to lose yourself etc. sidenote frank also escaped the time loop by going insane and getting institutionalized
in a war for all seasons bj potter and charles are all present at the 1951 new years party as well as the 1952 new years party
there are three christmas episodes, two of which bj is present for even though he should only have spent one christmas in korea
details of people's families and lives shift around - sometimes potter's got multiple grandchildren, sometimes he only has one, sometimes its a girl, sometimes its a boy, sometimes she's 5, sometimes he's 2
we're not the first people to talk about this either, here's a good video compilation posted a couple yrs ago of time loop moments
overall ive been using the time loop thesis to add another layer to my mash viewing experience. it increases the already present sense of constant dread, anger, frustration, and disgust with their situation that the characters feel, plus it feels like a very poignant take on the united states' constant warmongering and violent existence. it really never ends, it just goes on an on. the future's been canceled by the war department- we're just gonna replay the past.

Thinking about Trapper and relationships, especially as compared to his costars. Trapper is written as being uniquely casual in his relationships, which I find interesting.
Compare him to his fellow philanderers Frank and Henry. We know a lot about their relationships with their wives- we know why Frank is unhappy at home and why he stays with Louise despite that, and Henry's tumultuous but loving relationship with Lorraine is the focus of several episodes. We know next to nothing about Trapper's relationship with Louise- he cracks some jokes and you get the sense they're not very happy, but the one exchange we see between them in Kim is sweet. You can kind of infer they've fallen out of love with each other but love their children very much, but it's just that- an inference. It really isn't spelled out the way Henry and Frank's relationship troubles are.
His affairs contrast sharply with Frank and Henry too. Frank is almost a bigamist- he's very much in love with Margaret and in an exclusive relationship with her, he toys with the idea of marrying her but is ultimately never willing to give up the security and respectability of his relationship with Louise for her. Henry has a mistress, Leslie, who's never given much focus but is consistently with him apart from the time he steps out on her in Henry in Love. There's no illusion he's going to leave Lorraine for her, or any implication they're in love- it's simply an affair- but the running gag of her leaving her laundry to dry in his tent does imply a fair amount of domesticity and familiarity, and there's genuine affection in what we see between them.
Trapper never gets a steady girlfriend in that same way. He's got Something going on with Ginger, and a little bit of Something going on with Margie, but it's never in focus. Even compared to Hawkeye, who is also not a one woman man- early season Hawkeye really seems to relish Dating, gets serious about multiple nurses (even though this never works out), proposes marriage to five different woman (albeit 4 of those off screen). We see Trapper go on double dates with Hawkeye, but as far as actual pick up lines it's exclusively propositions for sex, not dating. He is never 'in love' the way other characters are.
Admittedly, as a Wretched TrapHawker, all of this serves to intensify his friendship with Hawkeye to me. Trapper makes friends easily, is buddies with people who aren't Hawkeye, goes off and does his own thing from time to time, but the only person we really see him Have Feelings For is Hawkeye, which stands out given how consistently casual he is with literally every other relationship.
All this to say why it's easy for me to headcanon Trapper as aromantic, or a gay-man-who-has-sex-with-women. For all he enjoys sex, his heart is not in it, but the writing of other characters shows it COULD be. He just isn't written that way.

I got way too excited when I saw this camera in Fallout (first episode)- looked just like the ones in Fallout 4- I researched the camera type like a year or two ago because I wanted to collect things that were close enough to Fallout 3, 4, and NV "junk" because i love thrifting and a lot of items are based off real world stuff! Its the Kodak Brownie Hawkeye (flash model) if anyone's wondering- I doubt you were 😄

On a more serious note, now that I’m halfway into Farscape season 1, I can’t help but think about Peter Quill/Star-Lord from “Guardians of the Galaxy” being a lesser John Crichton. Because, as I’ve written before, James Gunn was so obviously inspired by Farscape:
1) John and Peter are the good ole American protagonists who were taken to deep space against their will. They connect with people through pop culture references and their good heart.
2) Aeryn Sun and Gamora are the stone cold warriors who used to fight for the bad guys but are now on the side of good. They also have a romance with John/Peter.
3) Ka D’Argo and Drax are the proud warriors who are seeking to redeem themselves. They also are so stiff that references and simple sayings go over their heads.
4) Rygel is sorta kinda like Rocket Raccoon in that they’re the scheming loudmouths who look out for themselves.
5) Pilot and Groot fulfill the role of the lovable support character who helps everyone in the crew.
6) Zotoh Zhaan doesn’t have a perfect GOTG counterpart, but I really do feel that James Gunn split her traits between Nebula (who got the rage and tragic backstory) and Mantis (who got the mind powers).
Anyways, back to the main point. While Peter Quill does come off as a John clone, I think the way John’s arc was handled was superior to the way Peter was written. I think the main reason is that I can see why John would be his crew’s leader (or, at least, the crewmate keeping everything together) while Peter feels like he’s the leader because the plot says he should be.
John starts off as the goofball who can’t do anything right. No one trusts him and they think of him as the idiot who they just keep around. But as season 1 goes on, you can tell that he’s the glue who’s keeping the crew together. He’s the crewmate who got everyone to open up, especially Aeryn (who was trained to be cold and emotionless) and D’Argo (who distrusts everyone because of his traumatic past). He’s like that one friend who you feel like you can talk to about anything, especially since everyone else in the crew is dealing with their own problems.
So when we get to the episode where John is ready to leave, it makes sense that everyone feels hesitant to see him go. Aeryn is starting to fall for him, he was one of the few people who D’Argo would consider a friend, he helped Zhaan through some of her toughest times, and he generally got along with Rygel.
As for Peter Quill, I’m not saying he was badly written. It’s just him being treated as the team’s leader is not as believable. It’s like, imagine if John Crichton was written to be as emotionally closed off and standoffish as everyone else in the crew. While this does make Peter stand out as his own character separate from John, it also makes you wonder why Quill was written as the team’s leader. I’m sure that’s why it was a recurring gag that Quill was always struggling to be seen as the leader, whether it was from Rocket or Thor. The writers knew that wasn’t 100% believable, so they wrote it into the story.
I don’t get that with John. He might be the resident goofball, but he’s also why the crew hasn’t fallen apart.
TL;DR Peter Quill/Star-Lord was obviously modeled after John Crichton. But the MCU character who feels more in line with John as a character is Clint Barton/Hawkeye.

AC: Thank you for sending this!! Although I have only seen Hawkeye once, I loved the idea and there needs to be so much more Kate fics! I hope you enjoy this x
Tumblr media
As part of your studies to become a surgeon, you had to do some volunteer work at the local hospital to help put what you've learned so far into practice. Of course, given you're only half-way through your second year of med school, you weren't expected to do any major operations like a heart transplant. You would scrub in on operations like that and watch as the surgeon did their magic and other times you'd help out in emergency.
Tonight, was exactly that, a few hours in the emergency room helping out the nurses. You never knew what injury would walk through those big sliding doors. "Alright, Mrs Anderson, take it easy for the rest of the week, okay?" you smiled softly at the elderly woman who had slipped in her kitchen while making dinner. She required a few small stitches.
"Thank you, doc!" the woman smiled before you showed her out. With her cart, you placed it in the filing system at the front desk before taking a much needed mouthful of your soon to be cold coffee when your eyes locked onto the next patient who walked into the ER.
"Dad?" you questioned as you wandered over to him, "are you okay?!" you asked in a worry. Your eyes scanning every part of him for any injuries or signs of blood.
"It's not me honey" he assured you, "it's Kate" he added. Your heart sunk as you saw your girlfriend standing behind your father with a soft smile and a large gash on her forehead as she mouthed "I'm sorry" when you raised a concerned brow at her.
"What happened?" you asked.
"I slipped" Kate lied which only made you tilt your heard at the dark-haired woman.
"Take a seat on bed four, I'll be with you in a moment" you replied, giving your girlfriend a non-impressed look. Your dad, Clint, followed Kate to the bed where they both waited for you to return with fresh instruments to stitch Kate's forehead up. It was hard for you to keep your worries to a minimum when your father was yet to know about your relationship with his crime fighting partner.
You returned with everything you needed and began to clean up the blood that made a river down the side of Kate's face. She would see the worry in your eyes and knew she'd be getting a talk when she was home alone with you. Clint offered to get some fresh coffee as it would take a while for you to make sure Kate could leave in be better condition she arrived in.
"What happened?" you asked as you jabbed her with some lidocaine to numb the area before giving the woman stitches.
"It was just a little fight; you should see the others! I think they'll need a lot more than stitches" she replied with a chuckle. You didn't find it funny though.
"Baby, I already worry about my dad out there fighting aliens and whatever else, now I have to worry about you as well and somehow, I'm more worried about you than my dad" you explained as you prepared the stitches. Kate gently placed her hand over your blue gloved hand, making you look at her once more.
"I promise you, I'm okay" she assured you.
"Honey, I'm about to give you 4 stitches, I wouldn't exactly say that's okay"
Kate didn't want to make you worry any more than you already were, "what can I do to make this up to you?" she asked.
"You could be more careful? Maybe not throw yourself into fights?" You raised a brow at her once more. Kate raised your hand to her lips and kissed your covered knuckles as she looked up at you, "your wish is my command" she smiled softly. Her cuteness was more than enough for you to forgive her and make you blush, you chuckled, "now I have to change my gloves again" you playfully rolled your eyes before taking off the now contaminated gloves.
As you turned around to get more gloves, you were met with the very protective look of your father who had just seen everything. He moved slightly to the left and made eye contact with Kate while instantly gulping and sloughing in hopes it would hide her from the glaring look from your father.
"So, which one of you is going to explain this?" he asked, placing the two take away coffee cups in the bin before crossing his arms over his chest.
"Dad, not here, not now" you tried to keep professional as you grabbed a fresh set of gloves.
----
You would've had Kate stitched up and out the door by now if it wasn't for the glaring stare your father was giving the two of you. Not a word was spoken as you stitched up your girlfriend's gash while your mind tried its best to not think about the talk you're going to have to have with your father.
It was safe to say that your dad has always been extremely protective of you, you're his eldest child and nobody would ever be good enough for his little girl. Even through high school, anybody you dated not only got a talking too from your father but also his friends, the avengers.
"How long have you two been dating?" Clint asked, breaking the silence. Kate looked at you as she chewed the inside of her cheek, it was clear she was slightly scared of what your father and her mentor might think of her dating you.
"A few months" you replied as you began to finish up Kate's stitches. Your father's eyes looked direct at Kate as you backed away from her and removed your gloves once again. "Remind me again my number one rule, Bishop" he spoke sternly.
"Not to flirt with your daughter" Kate confessed.
"Lucky you because it was me to who flirted with Kate" you turned to your dad who wasn't impressed. "Why? I mean, you can ha-"
"Dad!" you interrupted him, "I know you love me, and you care about me but, so does Kate. She's amazing, she's respectful, she's funny, she's smart and beyond beautiful, she makes me happy and for once, please, just give this one a chance. No talks from your or the others, if I didn't think Kate would be good for me, I wouldn't have asked her out myself" you explained, slightly unloading some built up feelings.
Clint took a moment to think about what you were saying, his eyes drifted back to Kate before he sighed in defeat. "Can I just say one thing?" Your father asked, you nodded.
"You hurt her in anyway a-"
"I know, you'll kill me and then most likely the Avengers will kill me and for some reason I feel like you'd kill me again" Kate interrupted, chuckling nervously at her own words. You couldn't help but shoot your dad and unimpressed look before he opened his mouth again.
"You best come to dinner Friday night then, Laura is going to want to know about this" he replied. Your dad won't admit it but he couldn't have picked anybody better for you to date. He knew Kate would never hurt you and that she would treat you with nothing but love and respect, it just meant now he had to really make sure that she wouldn't get hurt on the job.
