As an avid One Direction fan fic reader, 2023 has been a truly amazing year for fics! I read so many incredible fics this year, so please check out all my recs for the year here! Below you will find fics that made me cry or cry with laughter. Others brought me comfort during hard times or filled my heart with joy or had me screaming into my pillow in surprise. I share this list with you all not to say that these fics are better than others from this year, but to say thank you to these writers who have left a mark on me with their fics.

It becomes obvious early on that Harry is a bit lost and Gemma is worried about him. To help both of them, Louis is more than happy to help Harry find himself again.

(E, 70k, one night stand) The one in which Harry is bad at sex and Louis spreads it all over town and to make up for it, decides to help him with no agenda of getting anything from it, but in the end, he ends up getting more than he bargained for.

Louis hated honey. He didn’t like the flavour, he didn’t understand why some liked it in their tea, he hated when it was put on sandwiches or cake or anything really. But, standing stock still in front of a rather large display of honey in that 24-hour Tesco, Louis found himself grabbing the largest jar of “100% pure London-local honey” and adding it to his trolley, simply because he knew it would make Harry smile.

Louis always wanted to make Harry smile.

Or the one where Louis pines after Harry, Harry is passionate about helping save the bees, and a late night shopping trip gone wrong doesn't end quite as horribly as Louis imagines.

Prompt: ok so i saw a truck today and i thought it said MANSCAPE but it actually said MAINSCAPE and it was a landscaping company. but then i thought LARRY AU. where louis owns a landscaping company called MANSCAPE and harry thinks it’s some sort of in-home pubic hair grooming company, so he calls to make an appointment, there’s some discussion of whether he wants his bushes trimmed as well, and then when it’s time for the appointment, harry’s like half-naked waiting around in a robe or something and louis shows up with lawnmowers.

2. Do you read/reread your own fics?

Oh 100%, I am like my own biggest fan. My fics are full of tropes I love, and they have my exact sense of humour (isn't that a funny coincidence? XD), so I always genuinely enjoy reading back my old works. Even the ones that are quite old where I can see flaws or things I've since improved on, I still enjoy the story and I'm still proud of what I accomplished -- and likewise proud of how much I've grown over literally a decade of writing fic.

4. How many WIPs do you have right now? and 8. What project(s) are you currently working on?

I actually have less WIPs than usual at the moment because I posted four fics in August haha but I've still got a few things kicking around in some respect.

Two days ago I finally put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) on a watersports idea I've been kicking around for over a year, and immediately cranked out 2k.

I also have 600 words of another idea I was considering for the fest, but I'm not sure I'll touch that until maybe next year -- it's only been dormant for a month or so though so I don't consider it fully abandoned yet.

I'm not sure I can count this week's Wordplay as a WIP since I haven't started it beyond brainstorming, though it is part of a series so in that sense the series is a WIP?

I also have a completed fic that I'm planning to turn into a larger series (completely disconnected stories unified by the idea of sex --usually oral -- under tables), but don't want to post until I have a second one going so that I know it actually will be a series. I have a couple more ideas but haven't actually started any of them.

I'm also planning to resurrect a Soulmates fic I started back in 2020 but never finished, encouraged by a new soulmates fest. I haven't actually re-started it though.

So... somewhere between 1 and 5, depending how you count?

48. Do you prefer to write skimpy drafts and flesh them out later, or write too much and cut it back?

well, i don’t intentionally write skimpy drafts? but the editing process for me is almost always additive - i’m always realizing there was something more i wanted to include, or more that i had to say about something, or additional details that will improve things! so yeah, definitely the first option, lol.

49: Favorite fictional world?

of all time? gosh, that’s hard!! ummm i’m gonna say it’s a three-way toss-up between star trek (because SPACE), anne mccaffrey’s Pern (because DRAGONS), and jacquelin carey’s Terre D’Ange universe (because i am a massive nerd for religion, linguistics, and history, and what she does in her world building is HOT, and that’s before you even get to the smut).

50. Do you share your rough drafts or do you wait until everything is all polished?

i share drafts. i would share more drafts, if i had more people who were interested, LOL. i am a very communal writer - i benefit from cheerleading, and i write best when i feel like other people are invested in what i’m doing, which makes writing some of the rare-pairs i write… hard. but i also try not to be annoyingly needy, so i mostly only share drafts when i’m being actively beta’d by someone.
