im a huge supporter of the lily james as adult lyra belacqua fancast, but in all her roles where she has dark hair in a period drama she is also very much giving ruth wilson

"His hands, still clasping her head, tensed suddenly and drew her toward him in a passionate kiss. Lyra thought it seemed more like cruelty than love, and looked at their daemons, to see a strange sight: the snow leopard tense, crouching with her claws just pressing in the golden monkey's flesh, and the monkey relaxed, blissful, swooning on the snow."

there’s never been a better time to appreciate dafne keen and amir wilson as lyra and will. they are both so brilliant and very different in the performance they create, which is what i think brings the dynamic between these characters to life. amir conveys the subtleties of will parry’s fear and anger sometimes only through his eyes but he can let it boil over into the physicality needed for action based scenes. the emotion he puts into every movement is absolutely fantastic. dafne handles intense scenes with ease, none of which feel forced, and you can see her heart pouring out of her most especially opposite actors like ruth wilson with whom she has always held her own. her distinctive facial expressions always feel like lyra, and she plays off so many different characters/scenarios in a mature way while in keeping with the spirit of a child, just like our dear lyra silvertongue. i love them both so much

fun fact about indira varma! she and james mcavoy at one point swapped book recommendations; he tried to get her to read LOTR, iirc, and she convinced him to read His Dark Materials, which eventually led to him talking about it with a friend of his who worked the production side of the HDM TV series and who eventually called him last-second when their original asriel had to drop bc they already knew that james knew the character and loved the books. they started filming his scenes less than a week later.
so everybody say "thank you, indira" on behalf of all the horny lord asriel fans.
