“Psst.” Preston knocked softly at Sole’s bedroom door. "Uh, you're in there, right, babe?"

His heart was in his throat, after all that had happened, all that they’d told him when they returned from the Institute. Preston just remembered being beyond grateful that they’d come back to him at all, that they were alive and safe, and he’d told them just as much.

But they... they hadn’t agreed with him, and damn, but that killed him.

“Sole?” Preston tried again, his voice still weak from disuse.

All the patrols over the past two days, that’s… all he’d done. Even Sturges hadn’t heard his voice. No meetings, no missions, no small talk with settlers, barely any contact with anyone at all. No… All Preston had room for right now was the worry in his heart for his partner. His general, his love, god, his life now… and they were hurting, beyond anything they’d ever shown on the surface before, and instead of craving his help, falling into his arms or crying on his shoulder, they’d just… shut him out.

Was that… normal? Was it okay? Should he press them in order to help, or give them space and let them come to him?

Preston had always, always come to Sole in his times of uncertainty, of desperation and depression, seeking words and touches of comfort, their advice, their warmth.

If Sole didn’t do the same, well… What was he supposed to make of that? Was he doing something wrong, or was it just the way that his partner chose to cope with their own hardships and emotions? On their own… it was hard for the minuteman to stomach it.

“Come in.”

The monotone words jarred Preston back to reality, and he damn near charged into the room at the sound of their permission being granted to him.

“Hey, Sole.” His voice was softer, higher-pitched than usual, like if he spoke any other way it would just break them into pieces. “I… just wanted to make sure you were okay.”

Preston closed the door behind him, and approached slowly, then kneeled beside his partner where they were seated on their bed.

Sole looked… well enough, he supposed. Perhaps a bit disheveled, with the dark circles under their eyes and their hair unusually gnarled, but Preston tried to bar himself from becoming too outwardly worried about them. Still though, he wasn’t quite sure how to approach… Or what to say.

Tell me how to help you, love, and I'll do it.

“Okay?” Sole croaked, and already, he felt ashamed at his wording.

Of course they’re not okay, not after everything they’ve been through. How could I have--? Ugh…

Preston grimaced at their reaction.

They must be better at this than I am.

No wonder they preferred being alone to this.

“Not really."

He was relieved when they continued, until what they'd actually said hit him.

"But… I think I’ll make it...”

Preston felt a painful pang ring throughout his chest at their words. Though they held hope to them, Sole's voice didn't quite reflect it.

“Look, Preston…”

He held his breath, hearing his own heart pounding in his ears as they trailed off forebodingly.

“I’m sorry.” Sole said with a deep exhale. “I know I’ve been shutting you out, and maybe… I know it’s not fair to you, that you want to help, but… I just don’t know if that’s even possible.”

Another agonizing ache squeezed at his heart, and Preston tentatively rose to sit upon the bed next to his partner. Sole made no move to stop him, and so he set his hand over theirs on the mattress, his warmth passing into their own cold hand through his caress.

“Well, with your permission, sir/ma'am, I’d like to try.”

Sole’s vibrant eyes, now seeming more monochrome, more dull than he’d ever remembered seeing them before, set upon him as their brows raised in question.

“Even if it’s impossible, like you said... you’re worth trying. More than worth it, actually.” Preston tried to smile at them, but he was afraid his worry continued to show through. No matter what expression he tried though, he was certain that’d be the case.

“Thanks.” Sole whispered it so low, it could hardly be deemed a breath. But still, Preston heard it.

“C-can I… Can I hug you?” He asked, even as he unwittingly scooched closer to them on the bed.

“I think I’d like that.” Sole said, the barest, thinnest hint of a smile shining through their expression as they half-heartedly opened their arms to him.

It was incredible, Preston couldn’t help but think, the way their hugs healed him. The way Sole’s touches bled comfort straight into his body, their hand in his felt like a bond strong enough to hold the two halves of the world together, his head on their shoulder made it seem like he could withstand just about anything, like this world of theirs' was… manageable, even with all of its faults, its violence, its tragedy.

He wished the feeling could last him-- them both-- forever.

And Preston hoped that even half of what Sole's comfort did for him was shining through in this one tight embrace. If it did, then maybe, just maybe, it truly was possible for his partner to be okay again.

ok, so the sp**king was definitely so uncalled for like??? She’s literally on her deathbed with hypothermia and you guys think that doing that rn is a good choice??? They’re all so weird, but I couldn’t look away 😭😭😭

I will admit that Yoongi’s help at least retained a shred of dignity for the MC and was helpful but COME ON MANNNN, LET HER BE PLEASE 😭😭😭

I am SO glad that Jimin and Taehyung were banned from the cabin for being little shits, honestly they deserved longer (ornotcomingbackatallforbeingsuperweird) and I couldn’t help but find some endearment for Jin bc of how scared he was of the movie lol

If any of the members really had any redeeming features, now that sadly MC has been forced to succumb, would really be YoonJinKook tbh, everyone else will need to GROVEL for her forgiveness and acceptance

Maybe, in several years, they’ll stop being so creepy and be “decent” 😭😭

But I’m so excited for the next chapter!!! Honestly, this whole story has been my own “Roman empire,” I literally can’t stop thinking about lovesick 😭

silver/kalim, you say? 👀

i havent thought of this ship before but i Am curious if you want to talk about them

YES OUGH i love themmmm. theyre def one of those ships that like, i didnt notice in main story bc they havent shown up together much, so it's very much come more from the vignette/card stories + some events. especially bc silver himself hasnt been in the main story much yet!

there are a handful of specific instances that really have me 👀 at them:

in i think leona's ceremony robes card, when leona's coming to get his mixed up laundry from malleus, silver's at peak Oblivious Mode and thinks leona's there to talk to malleus bc they are Friends, despite leona very blatantly saying they arent lkfdshgklfdj. ruggie makes a comment that silver and kalim are known by the second years for their kinda airheaded happy go lucky vibes. i think the eng translation called it 'the facepalm brigade' or something lol. like everyone else can be in a bad mood but those two never are and are just painfully oblivious lol. it's cute that they have the same sweet boy vibes :)

they're classmates! in... uhhh.. i think it's either kalim's standard uniform or silver's standard uniform story, kalim makes a point to wake silver up after he fell asleep, to remind him to change classes. it's cute that kalim cares!!! he also gets advice in kind of a funny way from kalim lol, about if he's being too hands off with malleus like sebek says he is [and then silver decides, after seeing how helplessly reliant kalim is on jamil, that silver is Right to want to give malleus space to grow LOL]

silver's lab coat story - silver and kalim are held after class and have to do make up work bc silver fell asleep in class and kalim broke equipment in class jfkldshg. they decide to stay back and work together :) silver is still having trouble staying awake, and confides in kalim [and jamil who got pulled into it lol rip] about his chronic sleep problem, kalim decides that before they work on their assignment, they should make a wake-up potion to help silver stay awake, and silvers really grateful that kalim's so enthused about helping him with it 🥺 the poor goobers both get each other so off track so easily lol. but it's so cute. you can tell in that story kalim really cares about silver and helping him feel better ;A;

a very small thing lol but in jade's halloween ssr story at the very beginning, when kalim's trying to bargain with jade or w/e, jamil complains that kalim's taking so long and silver fell asleep bc he had to wait so long. the way that convo goes just makes it sound like silver was hanging out with kalim and jamil Just Cuz and i thought it was cute kjlfdshg ANYWAY

in the second halloween event [it hasnt come out in engtwst yet so ill avoid story spoilers; im talking the endless halloween/not the masquerade one] there's a scene where jamil says silver scarily reminds him of kalim - i think it had something to do with his Innocent Good Boy Energy or something lol. and silver's response was something like "oh, thank you. kalim is nice to me in class so i am glad you think we're similar." and then later when [REDACTED] happens, silver makes a point to say to kalim that he is a good person and considers him a dear friend 🥺 this scene in particular made me SO HAPPY lol i felt SO VALIDATED!!!!

i THINK. I THINK!!! there's a similar opposite scene. where someone tells kalim that he's a lot like silver and kalim takes it as a compliment?? BUT i can't for the life of me remember the context. i'm not sure if it also happens in halloween 2 or if that's in another event/story. or if i made it up LOL <- god does anyone know what the hell i'm talking about. it's been so long. i used to be so sure it existed and now i dont KNOW!!!

the general vibe of noble/knight is cute. like kalim is the eldest of a wealthy powerful family, to the point that he has an attendant- jamil - and silver is raised as a knight to malleus. i always thought it would be cute if later down the line, jamil's off to live his life free as he pleases, and silver like takes on that role either officially or unofficially by Kalim's side to protect him bc he Loves Him 🥺 wah wah let me have my cliches LOL

circling back to the thing ruggie said in my first bullet point lol, i found through google translating journeys lol, theres a ship tag or something for them in jpntwt/pixiv or w/e that i believe comes from that story. i think it's いらふわコンビ - if you search that it's nothing but silver/kalim lol. when i was auto translating captions with google on fanart of those two, i kept seeing the term "fluffy combination" or "irritated combination" and i was like. what the hell's that mean lol. this was before engtwst existed, so i think i eventually tried comparing the characters to ruggie's dialogue in that story ^ on youtube, and it was clllloooose but not quite the same or something. a few fan translations i saw translated the thing ruggie said as "mad free zone". like those two together Do Not Get Mad lol, or that they have a "frustratingly, easy going vibe". and a spanish sub called it "el espacia libre de locos" which is roughly "space free of craziness/wildness" whatever. anyway. いらふわコンビ. whatever it means, people use it in silver/kalim fanart lol <- there is a lot of adorable fanart of the two of them :')

not really super related but i believe the miraheze wiki says somewhere that silver, kalim, and rook are the only three students that use/specialize in light magic. i dont really know where that comes up but it's a fun fact/i think it's bc theyre the only three characters not based on villains/are more hero leaning from their origins? [besides i guess jack since hes supposedly not based off Anything lol just a random wolf boy]. it was just cute that they had that in common, like boys with the good vibes that make u think "why are you in villain school for villains" fjkdslhgf

there might be other scenes/reasons i'm forgetting but that's the gist of why i Love Them. they are sweet good boys.

I’d say top 5 tho is:

5.) Henderclair - Lucas/Dustin: this one used to not be as rare back in like s1. But honestly? Died down a bit which is sad— I used to LOVE this one. S3 kinda screwed a lot of ships and Henderclair was NOT spared 😭 pls I miss them.

4.) Joyren - Joyce/Karen: this ship is just *MWAH* top tier. It’s honestly so sweet every time they talk to each other because Joyce is usually anxious and Karen speaks in a calm tone... remind me of anyone? *AHEM* BYLER *AHEM*. Am I projecting my byler ship onto them a bit? YES, but I really like it even besides that— they even held hands in s1, I mean, c’mon. Tbh I ship Joyce with a few people (same as Will DJDJDJDJD omg).

3.) Bancy - Barb/Nancy: Barb had so much potential... WHYYYYYY. I just know there would be so many Bancy and Byler parallels if she was still alive. She was nothing but a good friend to Nancy, ugh. They had pictures together >w< and Nancy twirled her phone cord when talking to Barb. AGHHHH— I’m glad Nancy was shown upset about her death in s2 and it was kinda important that she died bc it drove some of the plot for s1 and s2.

2.) Ronance - Robin/Nancy: I almost didn’t include this one ONLY BECAUSE it’s been gaining a big following rececently. But yeah, immediately I was like NEW SHIP. I’ve seen so many s4 bts photos of them and I’m really rooting for them tbh in s4 :3.

1.) Byerson - Will/Dustin: I just think they’re really sweet anytime they interact. They never fight and they’re always so kind to each other. I like in s1 when Dustin hugs Will at the end 🥺 and in s3 when Will and Dustin are on the hill alone and he invites Dustin to hangout sometime like they used to— my heart. They also just sit back and watch Lucas and Mike mess everything up LOL. Just very pure overall.

Yn's death scene broke my heart. I'm ngl, I didn't cry bc I'm already used to saint level angst but the fact that she just wanted rin to believe her and the way rin was screaming ugh, it's just so tragic that he finally had a wife who he truly loves and it ends this way 💔 for my peace of mind, I'm imagining them living their best life in heaven and having the happy family that they weren't able to start 😭

And rin was so smart for choosing to torture hera and c'ian instead of killing them, he definitely knew how much it would affect them to witness his death. Also, on that note of c'ian and hera being kept in the dungeon, what has happened to demie? Is she staying with the empress or being looked after by someone else?

Also, when 'samu and the knights kneeled in respect for rin and yn, it's kinda sad that she was finally shown some sort of respect by the people of Faren and she wasn't even alive to witness it. I feel like if she didn't eat the berries and rin saved her, everyone would've been able to see that she's not who they thought she was and would definitely have some respect/love for her 😭

This play was so beautifully written Saint. I really do appreciate you taking the time to write this masterpiece bc I can imagine that writing in that language and in a format that doesn't allow for a lot of description, is difficult. Thank you saint, you broke my heart once again and I love you for it. 😂💘

what’s totally crazy about the ending is that if the MC had only held out for like 5 minutes, she and rin could’ve been alive together ☹️. i am happy that they get to be together in the afterlife tho. i think it’s kind of a morbidly funny trend in tragedies that if they had just a tiny bit more streets smarts, most of their problems could’ve been solved in like a week. anywho this was a great story, and i think you deserve all the flowers for writing in such a difficult style, and still being able to convey such intense emotions. you truly are amazing at what you do, and i’m very grateful to be a reader!

okay so I’m going to post all of my perhaps the stars thoughts in this one post, under the cut, so they won’t clog up the dashboard/tags. And I’ll just keep editing this one post unless my thought is a joke and I want clout for it. Spoilers under the cut obviously

Like so.

Front matter - I love 9A as a narrator already. They have no idea what’s going on. I love the dramatis personae and just the ?? everywhere.

1 - gosh i love 9A so much. you can definitely tell that they and mycroft have very similar backstories and knowledge bases, but the distinction between the characters is so clear. also 🥺🥺🥺 it has to be a short war. 9A writes like they’re on the verge of tears and I want to protect them with my life (Mycroft writes like he’s in the middle of a breakdown and that’s the difference)

in addition, I love that they said that world war 1 ended in 1945 or 1989. It’s interesting to see how history recontextualises our mostly contemporary events.

2 - Carlyle!!!!!!!! Carlyle is safe and wearing a wrap and they are eating chocolate cake I am so glad. Being this far from Dominic can only do them good. I like that they’ve shown more of what the Anonymous actually does. i understand why the anonymous is so respected if part of their work is done 100% live streamed, typos and all. You couldn’t win the beer test harder. I hope the the Anonymous livestream also comes with a chat function where people can make fun of their typos I think that’d be really funny.

I love how much 9A is a part of the Ancelet-Kosala family they are so loved 🥺 Vivien and Bryar both inviting them to stay at their flat I want to see Vivien’s flat and Su-Hyeon giving them their old deputy sensor jacket was so sweet. I love them, I love their friendship. Also I love that 9A can describe affection and caring for people and be normal about it. This narration is so relaxing.

I hope Martin is safe. Also this is the first time in all four books I’ve actually liked Heloise so I’m going to make that a Mycroft problem.

3 - “I have never been in a place before.” boo hoo do you want me to be sorry? I’m in a place right now. I’ve been in a place this whole time. Jokes aside, I assume this chapter was written before the pandemic but it really does give me strong isolation/quarantine energies.

I’m not sure I love the top down narration of here’s what everyone’s doing in all the places, but I assume that comes with the tragedy of not being able to physically watch these conversations because they cars are down.

I’m gonna do it this way for ongoing thoughts. and chapter style as above for when I come home from work and I summarise what I read

MASON being allowed to pass through Levantine lands makes me think of when you’re playing Diplomacy and Turkey allows Russia to pass through Constantinople to the Black Sea, and now I’m wondering if MASON spent those 128 days playing Diplomacy online with the bois like I do

I love dominic as the Mitsubishi director actually. I think he's thriving. I expected him to shirk his duties as much as possible but he really is going to bat for his guys

9A putting their tracker on busy to avoid bryar, and then her overriding it was very funny

It sucks that the trackers are down. Imagine how that world would look if you lived it :( poor jedd mason. They can't even reconnect the system landline style because romanova is a modern city and doesn't have wires. That's such good worldbuilding

Oh no! Our masonic oath! It's broken! Also IS XIAOLIU OKAY? IS XIAOLIU OKAY???? MASON THEIR HUSBAND IS ALREADY LOST IN THE WILDERNESS HOW MUCH MORE CAN YOU DO TO THEM?

Did 9A not translate the latin from the first few books? Or did they get Carmen to do those passages as well?

9A laughing at latitudinarian but not dick hooker. I hate this book. I know that line was just put in there to make fun of me and I resent it

"mars or first contact?" And "wear the vs with me" made me actively emotional i love huxley and 9As friendship

That being said this is so awkward because i feel like I'm loosely hiveguard? Which seems unlike me but maybe i just think assassination is sexy

9- is it upsetting to know that carlyle is so suicidal at this point that they don't care if they live or die? Yes. But also, 'im suicidal so I'm happy to drag myself down with you' is metal as fuck. I hope you die i hope we both die. Also imagine risking world war because you're a horny rapist. Yikes. Anyway jesus christ sniper really wrote their chapter while experiencing THAT level of torture. I want to kill julia so bad she's so evil. But as a side note I was briefly obsessed with a The Adventure Zone fanfic with essentially the same premise if less overtly rapey so I do kind of love this, on like a I love feeling big feelings scale.

I'm kind of miffed that the answer to 'who kidnapped sniper?' was someone we were told explicitly that it wasn't, and not someone else that we could have foreshadowed. Like if they had just said 'it can't be julia because she wouldn't publish something admitting her guilt' that would have been fine, but they also said that the dollmakers were all vouched for. How are we supposed to predict a fifth dollmaker? (Then again the answer to who stabbed mycroft was fucking perry-kraye again, so sometimes that's just how it be) Anyway my favourite fringe theory was that sniper is cato weeksbooths frankensteins monster, and they were taken for related reasons. followed closely by masonic torture.

10 - haha yes let Anonymous say fuck! I checked and this is the first fuck since tltl. I like how 9A is acting like ECP Holmes and MC Moriarty is like, secret code, as though the whole world didn’t read about their Holmes/Moriarty relationship. This wasn’t so much a puzzle as a junior jumble

11 - I love pirate mycroft. Pros of having a cannibal murderer on your ship: willing to eat the dead crewmember instead of rations. Also this is very obviously the plot of The Odyssey.

12 - I though i already had comments on 12 started. I can't believe this is unedited. This is just how mycroft writes. Unbelievable. Also I want to quickly pause and read the Odyssey because I have a copy I just never got around to finishing it, and I would love to, just once, know more about something than Mycroft does. The only thing he referenced I’ve actually read was Candide and I literally forgot all the Manichean stuff in favour of making jokes about syphilis.
