What I like about them

If Shotaro is going to do something, he is going to go all. The.Way. Whether it’s his dedication to The Hardboiled Aesthetic, hiswork as a detective, falling for someone (again), anything. WhenShotaro says he’s doing something, he’s going to do it.

This man is devoted tothe whole found family that the agency became. He’s slow to warm upto people, but once he does, he becomes full on ride-or-die for them.

… okay I realized as soon as I wrote that last line that I’mtalking about Kamen Rider, where that is a very real jobdescription and workplace risk. (Stupid secondary meanings keepcreeping into everything I write with this franchise.)

And it’s a very real risk that he’s taken, too…which leads us into…

What I dislike about them

“Local superhero takes obscene risksso that nobody else has to.” Am I talking about Shotaro? Kouta?Taiga? Sento? Ryuuga? Who knows?

Shotaro talks big, but he doesn’tseem to value himself very much.

The arc with Zone and Beast, where theboys first used CycloneJokerXtreme, was... Not a good sign forShotaro’s self worth. He wasn’t able to keep up with Philip, knewthat he was the problem, and since Shroud kept saying that Ryu shouldbe Philip’s partner… Shotaro tried to bow out, because he didn’twant to slow Philip down. That would be admirable, if it weren’tfor the fact Philip still wanted to partner with him, and that hewent off to try and close the case in an incredibly reckless andrisky manner. He didn��t know that Hokuto PMTajimi Bell was the user of the Zone Memory, but he seemedto suspect she was. He brought it right to her anyway, withoutknowing what it could do. This very nearly actually kills theman.

(I just went to KR Wiki to check names,and the matchup on the front page is Joker versus Protodrive. CouldNOT have been more appropriate.)

It’s really hard to pick! My favorite smallmoments are the hijinksaround the agency, justoverall.

(I get it, Shotaro, I do. I really, really get whyyou went there. But that was one of the scariest examples of yourself-sacrificing tendencies and it hurts to watch, and it hurts tohear everyone trying to stop you, and it hurts your familyyou moron.)

A situation with this character that I want to see explored more

This doubles up as a situation to explore with Philip, since youcan’t have one without the other, but what was going on in theeight or so months between Begins Night and the start of the showitself?

(And I did the thing with words again, didn’t I? ‘Doubles up,’oh, for the love of Helheim, why this.)

In (Re)United, there’s eventually Shotaro and Ryuuga. They’rethe Chaotic Bi Jocks who don’t think they’re as importantas are hopelessly devoted to are somehowthe rational sides to their respective Neutral Demi Nerds.

Mind you, Shotaro’s not nearly as much of a jock as Ryuuga is –he’s just a different typeof nerd, the ‘my aesthetic is my favorite genre’type of nerd.

An assortment of headcanons!

Heis basically the ultimate animal whisperer. I mean, hecan apparently find cats that aren’t... actually supposed to befound? I’m still not convinced Kinouwas originally real.

Honestly, Ikind of think Shotaro has some minor reality warper abilities. He isthe ultimate wildcard, after all, and what better way to put a crimpin someone’s plans than to throw probabilityto the wind? (Hey,look, a yeti!)

Ona slightly less ‘crack-theory’ topic, I think Shotaro’s one ofthe most likely of the Neo-Heisei riders to havethe “Oh my god you are children,who was it thatletput youon the belt, and where can Ifind them?” moments. Whilehe and Gen bonded nearly instantly during their brief meeting inFourze & OOO, Sho couldn’t have known that Gentaro was aboutthe same age Philip was when they met. (Youare how old and goinginto space? WHAT?) And I doubt Shotaro would be in any way okay withsome of the things his successors have gone through.

Thataside, if Shinnosuke is the Dad friend of Neo Heisei, and Emu is theMom friend (don’t tell him, we’re waiting to see when henotices), then Shotaro is the Cool Uncle friend. He’s going to havea lot of practice with Haruna Terui, after all.
