Being a Black Girl and Finding Love

the last time i posted on this blog i was 18, 3 weeks away from leaving my hometown to pursue music in London and upset because my white friends didn’t understand the basics of cultural appropriation.

here i am, back almost a whole year later.

im 19 now, im a singer songwriter living in London, with an amazing group of diverse friends who understand each other and really have eachother’s backs. the last few months have been crazy for me, and i’ve experienced and learned about different parts of myself that i never knew existed because of how suppressed i was in my home environment until i moved.

one of these things that i never really knew that well about myself, was how much i could feel for one person.

growing up, i never really had much luck in the guy department. all my friends were white, and pretty, and most of the time i was the only black girl which, automatically, in society’s eyes- made me the ugly friend. it’s a statement that i know will make whoever reads this gasp. how can i call myself the ugly friend just because i’m the only black girl in the group? the same way our white as fuck society upholds euro-centric beauty standards and gives us warped depictions of what beautiful should be. beautiful in our modern day society means skinny, white and with long hair. its 2019, so this is not as rigid as it used to be, but growing up, it didn’t take long for me to realise that i was not what was desired by any of the guys me or other girls had their eyes on.

not that boys are the be all and end all of life, but we can all agree that as young teenage girls, developing your first crush was a pretty big part of life. and the need to feel desired, and loved, and wanted will always be a big part of the human condition. and this isn’t something i’ve always had the pleasure of experiencing growing up as a young girl the way i watched my other friends have.

i’ll spare you the long emotional details of childhood trauma when it comes to accepting myself and not letting whether white boys think i’m cute or not decide my value, i’ll just cut straight to what’s been keeping me up at 2am for the past 6 months.

i met him randomly at some music networking event and i always think about how weird it was that we somehow met in the first place. i was supposed to have gone home 10 minutes before, picked up an angry call from my dad telling me to go straight home even though he was a whole plane ride away. and my friend - let’s call her ellie, was outraged. “it’s only ten o’ clock you can’t leave”. she sounded stressed, to say the least. so, i didn’t. and 10 minutes later, i bump into him.

fuck him.

pretty smile, pretty eyes, pretty face, pretty laugh and he liked lorde and brockhampton. i was doomed from the start quite honestly.

we exchanged instagrams, he invited me to some event he was putting on and this open mic in shoreditch that he and his friends always went to. and the rest was history that i cant ever seem to properly let go of.

i started going to this shit every week just to see him, and after a couple months started developing a little crush, which after an invitation to some house parties, 2am voice memo conversations, supposed songs written about me (maybe), lingering looks, and a lot of conversations about astrology spiralled into me having full blown feelings for his pretentious ass. and it’s worse because he was never just a stupid boy. he was everything that i had always asked the universe for. i always said, that if the universe ever decided to send me my first boyfriend, that i wanted him to be educated in social issues, intelligent, motivated. capricorn was this.

it’s just a shame that he probably didn’t feel the same way.

i’ve been holding out hope for the longest time that maybe, just maybe, this time, i could finally be the girl that a guy looks at and says “yo, i want her.” the girl that someone looks at and sees something they could love. i wanted to experience the feeling of having someone reciprocate your feelings, and being in a relationship, and learning and growing with eachother. i wanted to have my first kiss and all these other things i dreamt up in my head because that’s what my scorpio ass does best; dreams.

for once, i wanted to be that girl. the girl that’s desired. and not just desired but desired enough that someone truly starts to pursue me.

let me cut to the chase and tell you that didn’t happen here.

i let myself over-analyze, i blamed myself, wondered what i was doing wrong, how i could be “cooler”, if i was “cool enough” to even be with someone like him; that was my first mistake, putting some boy on a pedestal because i was lonely and touch-starved. scorpio ass behaviour.

i let myself get sad when he wouldn’t text, or when he wouldn’t reply how i wanted. when he wouldn’t give me back the same energy i gave to him. i let myself get angry when i would show up to events to support him and he would dissapear for hours or flirt with other girls. because what the fuck? wasn’t i the one? i’m supposed to be the one. it’s my turn to be the one that somebody wants. why did the universe keep dangling something in front of me that i clearly couldn’t have?

i thought that when i moved, everything would be different and somehow the stars would align and i would meet a boy that would finally make me “the one”. finally, i would get to experience everything my friends did while i sat on the sidelines and wished i had what they did.

nah though, that’s not how shit works for girls like me apparently.

girls like me lead ourselves on, the boys don’t even have to do any work.

girls like me bask in the smidge of attention our crush gives us because we thrive off of the hope that somehow, maybe, possibly, they could feel the exact same way we have for so long and that eventually everything will come out and it will be a happy ending.

but what happens when none of that shit goes to plan?

i uploaded some random track that i was pretty proud of, it wasnt an official release so i wasnt really expecting a wide response. and i had been training myself not to expect anything from capricorn so i wouldn’t get hurt. but i couldn’t help the feeling i got when i realized that he didn’t share my song on instagram - which - i know, petty. but it was really the principle that got to me.

i’ve been so supportive of this guy for the longest time. i would always ask about his projects, current and upcoming, hype him up over the littlest things but very rarely did he ever even ask me about what i had planned or about my day, anything he posted relating to his music, i would repost. i would message him saying congratulations, or that his song was fire or that he was just doing a really good job. i’d come to his shows and do the same. and he couldn’t even repost a track on his instagram feed? why? too worried about looking cool and professional for his all his lowkey famous edgy hipster friends?

something switched inside me, really, i just got angry. anger is the key for me a lot of the time. and it helped me realize, as much as it fucking hurt, that i wasn’t and would never get the same energy back from capricorn, no matter how hard i tried. no matter how much or how little i posted. regardless of how i analyzed the lyrics of his songs that i thought were about me, or the content of his instagram posts or his messages back. i would never get what i was putting in. and i still don’t know why.

i don’t know why i never seem to be enough for the ones i truly want. but then did i really want him or the idea of him? regardless, i get neither at the end of the day. and that shit hurts, because this time, i let my hopes get higher and higher.

and boy is it a long way down.

my minds gone through many phases when it comes to him, but i think im finally at the point where im just accepting the fact that he doesnt want me even though i want him.

so bad.

and maybe its the 3am talking, but i dont think anybody will ever want me in the way i want them.

one time when i was 15, one of my friends said she couldn’t ever imagine me in a relationship. i cant either.

maybe i’m unlovable, maybe love and relationships just aren’t supposed to be a thing for someone like me.

i don’t really know if i believe in love anymore- which i know seems a bit dramatic all because of one guy but please understand its really an accumulation of things over the past few years of my growth.

nothing the universe has given me or shown me tells me that i could ever find love in any place i look.

so, i’m just going to stop looking.

and i’m going to stop hoping, and manifesting, and wishing on 11:11′s, and on stars that i’m too far away to reach.

and i’m going to stop opening my heart to every person who glances at it and smiles.

and i’m going to stop giving the best version of myself to boys who wont even give me a quarter of what they are.

and i’m going to stop thinking like just because i’ve moved countries that things have changed for me.

and i’m going to accept that love isn’t something that was made for me.

it never was.

at least now i know for sure.

david was a hopeful, cheerful boy upon entering this world. he went through milsestones quickly, his curiosity for the world around him often outshining the obstacles he faced. his parents would learn to describe him adventurous nature as admirable. he lived life as any other child would: bruises, scrapes, broken arms. he learned that even through pain, there were beautiful lessons.

it wasn’t until he was 4 that the brightness and the light from within was turned to darkness. he was at his friends hours for a playdate when it happened: a semi pulled out of nowhere as his loving parents drove home from the movie s and before he knew it, david was an orphan.

from then on, david could remember a growing sense of pain and ugliness within him. anger filled him like nothing else. he remembered having no one wanting to claim him, to take him into their home. even his aunt didn’t want to, but eventually, she gave into a 6 year old david and allowed him to stay so long as he pulled his own weight.

david was thankful, of course, but it was difficult to live in a place that he was not wanted and so he learned to resent even himself for his own existence. he grew angrier and angrier, began coming home with bloody fists and bruised eyes.

eventually, as high school rolled around the corner, a counselor at school spoke to him, told him about the world of football and how many before him learned to channel their anger and emotions through the sport. after a series of fights and arguments, david was tossed into the football team as a last hail mary before they kicked him out for good.

he grew to love the sport, he truly did. through it, he was finally able to find friends and family, a place to call a community. after practice dinners, pre-game work outs and ice baths — he has finally began to feel like things were coming together. however, the hole that was created by the absence of his parents no longer could be ignored and football wasn’t enough to fill it.

parties, girls, hookups — it became a regular thing. he became the popular guy, the one guy on the football team who may have actually had a shot to go professional. but alas, the partying caught up to him and by the time he went off to college, he had begun to neglect his studies. it wasn’t long before his school asked him to leave and david was left directionless and broken. for a while, he traveled the country, not knowing where or what to do.

eventually, david settled into a job at a mall — a security guard of all things. there, he made friends with high schoolers working the foodstands and people that passed by. though his ego may have been shattered from the loss of a potential football career, he coinvicned himself that he was okay.

ever since then, he’s been convincing himself that he is okay, and that nothing is wrong. he is a smiling, laughing opponent to the harsh realities of the apocalypse.

So... as promised in this post, I’m doing 50 facts about me because 50?! people followed me and my crazy masa obsessed cat mom ass. Thanks for enjoying my messed up commentary/rambles! Great, now I’m starting to sound like a youtuber that just wants money lmao sorry. Enough mushy stuff, and onto ze list!

Possible trigger warning: I’ll try to keep this as positive as I can, but there may be some things that can trigger some people (including but not limited to mental health, abuse/bullying, eating disorders etc.) If you are not comfortable with those topics, don’t read this.

2. I live in AZ

3. I LOVE FOOD. Part of the reason why I love masa and luka tbh... But seriously, food is great.

4. My fav foods are crab, ham, and burgers. See why I can’t become vegetarian 😂

5. I HATE onions with a passion.

6. My fav animals are owls, cats, hedgehogs, snakes, and whale sharks.

7. I have two dogs and used to have a cat (extremely long story short: My cat is in the “care” of an abusive psycho that isn’t allowed near me so I can’t see her ever again :/ but my sisters can) I still love Lucky (my cat) to death. She’s a sweet kitty (most of the time) and I miss her so much ❤️

8. My dogs are named Tucker and Bella. They’re both miniature schnauzers and they’re crazy. Tucker is a sweetheart, but he DOESNT. STOP. BARKING. He has a bit of a jealousy issue. When Bella gets attention, he starts barking and/or pushes her away from the human 😂 He hates when his people hug. He will jump on them and bark and growl. He also has stuffed animals that he LOVES. He uses them as pillows and carries them around. Bella is a lazy piggy ass. All she does is sleep and eat (like me haha). Half the time she’s too lazy to get up and go outside, and only responds when there’s food (once again, just like me 😅) They absolutely love each other though. Tucker licks her and grooms her and Bella follows him around and it’s just the cutest thing.

9. My lucky number is 9 because my birthday is 9/29 and my adoption day is 9/9 (see what I did there hehe get it? fact 9 is about my lucky number 9? no? okay...)

11. I have 2 sisters. They’re both in college but everyone who sees us on the street thinks I’m the oldest because I’m taller and curvier. One is 21 (but everyone thinks she’s like 16) and the other is 19 (people think she’s like 10 😂) No, none of us are blood related.

13. I’ve always been heavy for my height and age. I was and still am judged because of how much I eat and weigh. Because of this, I had an eating disorder in 4th grade and have always hated myself and envied my sisters for their tiny asian bodies.

14. I used to do tennis, dance, and swimming. I haven’t done any sports since then.

15. I can play 3 instruments, and tried many others. I played piano for 10 years, violin for 2, and French horn for 6 months.

I got my DS back on Christmas in 7th grade coz I got games for it and she trusted me enough (and I had a phone by then so yay trust...?)

27. ...the twitter accounts still exist... I’ve looked back at them and I wanna kms holy crap it was bad. Lesson: 10 year olds shouldn’t be on twitter.

28. I love Harry Potter and The Inheritance Cycle (Eragon series). My fav HP book is Order of the Phoenix, and my fav IC book is Eldest.

journal entry 7/7/19 from DEN

Yo tumblr, long time no see. basically writing this here becuase I’ve been super into journaling but I am not with my journal right now :( but basically me, mom + dad came to denver to visit our family and go hiking and stuff. it’s been amazing and i really love love love denver and my dad said I could make it a once a year thing anytime im stressed to come hike here :))))) god i love that man. I realize that the reason he’s an amazing dad is because he has 4 younger siblings that he took care of growing up and so basically before me he had 5 tries to be an amazing caretaker. he definitely succeeded with preethi and he does a beyond amazing job with me. so anyways, besides the actual city and scenery of Denver I came here to talk about the family we are staying with. super nice people and I love my thatha + ajji here (they are my grandma’s brother + sister in-law), my moms cousin is exactly as I would expect her to be, and the person im mainly in awe with is the cousin’s husband. this man has like full fledged ocd i’m pretty sure (he has vaccuumed every single day we have been here, their house is WEIRDLY clean like not a single thing on any counter, all of their master bedroom’s bathroom stuff are empty, etc.) just weird quirky things i’ve noticed that i’m assuming is because of him? idk. My mom who is a super blunt person was ilke So M****, do you vaccuum every day brotha. and my moms cousin quickly jumped in to defend him which is CLASSSSSSIC denial of mental health problems in indian families and communities. Another problem I think they have is that my family is super brahmin and like basically brahmin snobs and this man is not brahmin so maybe that contributes to his need to prove that he’s clean or something? idk im just throwing out theories here becuase i’m so in awe but basically they all boil down to the fact that indian culture/brahmin culture is just so extreme and pushes people to edges that they really shouldnt be at but whatever. the reason this has bothered me so much is because i can see it affecting the kids. Both the mom and dad are suuuuuuper scared of everytihng and not risk takers, and the kids are exactly like that. the older 13 year old daughter cant even answer the door without being scared, the younger one doesnt even walk out of the house in shorts becaue she’s scared that she’s going to trip and fall and scratch her knees. Kids shouldnt live in fear like this?!?!? I really hope to never raise my kids like this, i want them to be fearless and try all things with courage and to just always be bold. maybe i’m being judgemental here (which honestly i dont htink i am i think i’m right to say that kids should not live with this many fears... like the younger one doesnt even swim? my mom threw me into a swimming pool even before i could walk?!?) and maybe I should maybe see things from their perspective but i’m having a hella hard time here lol.

We also have these family friends and the younger son in the family is also similarly very scared of everything and vacuums like religiously so I’m wondering if he may grow up to be like a M***** uncle and I reallly don’t want to see that happening. If Indian families would just acknowledge mental health issues like they do any other health issue there would be just a way more productive way of handling people who need help to just live a normal and mentally healthy life. I honestly gave up trying to change the older generation but when I see it affecting the kids THATS what frustrates me. Honestly though maybe i know absoltuely nothing and when I have kids of my own i can raise them any way I want and i should just STFU now, but just my opinion out here.... :p

Hi, everyone. This morning, I had a minor car accident in the grocery parking lot. A lady's car hit the front seat door on the right side of my car. The lady's car is fine, but my car door got dented. For your information, the lady's car was parked in the parking space and I was backing up behind her side-way when she reversed and hit my car. I think she was careless. Anyhow, We exchanged year, make, mode, plate number, insurance information, personal info(name, phone number) each other. Now, I don't know what would happen if I report the accident to my insurance company, GEICO. So I am 21 years old working part time as a supervisor with a certain big brown shipping company. I am making decent money, and was, at the time, driving a really high mileage 1998 explorer that got terrible MPG and was nickle and dimeing me to death, so I decided to go look for a new car. The car I found, was a 2011 Suzuki Kizashi S. It had really high safety ratings, the car itself was in very good condition (the previous owner was a little old lady who I actually got to meet because her nephew was the car salesman I bought it from, who even brought me all of the paperwork on the maintenance she had - impeccable maintenance record I might add), and the average highway mpg, is double that of my explorer. However, I made a mistake of not confirming what my insurance rate would change to when I called State Farm over the phone to have my coverage changed to the new vehicle, and now here I am paying triple what I did for the explorer. I don't get it, how does a little 4 door sedan w/ awesome safety ratings and all that jazz cost me $224 a month to insure, but a 4WD fully loaded explorer, in Colorado, that I had since I was 17, was only like $63 a month. I mean, I understand that a vehicle that isn't paid off yet is going to have higher insurance thanks to the lender requiring full coverage, but I don't know ANYONE around my age paying this much except for a guy I work with who drives an Acura and got a massive ticket for going a buck 20 in a 45 speed zone and now pays like 350 a month. Hello, I was recently a victim of a hit and run on a brand new 07 car. The back was smashed and the right back tire was sideways. The insurance company had me bring it to one of their authorized body shops. After 9k worth of damage, I received the car back. I was told the insurance adjusters told the shop not to replace certain parts etc. When I received the car, I brought it to the dealer to get it a wheel alignment. The mechanic came back and said the car could not be aligned and there was still major damage (subframe was bent - I could even see it). He also stated that the car will never drive the same after the accident even if the subframe is replaced and it would pull to one side and cause wear on the tires. Do I have the right to demand the car totalled from the insurance company? The car was 3 months old before the accident and I would want it in the same condition that I got it in. The case is complicated and it is about my car insurance. I misinformed my insurance company about my NCD. As a result they cancelled my policy. The problem is that before they cancelled it I had a claim. My car was not damage at all but the other guy had a few scratches on the bumper and he reported the incident. I've just been obtaining quotes for a couple of cars I may buy - I'm 19 and looking to buy my first car. I was on moneysupermarket.com and noticed Admiral were consistently the cheapest company - so I kept changing some details to make the quote lower if possible, just messing around really. After around 10 quotes or so (with them being the lowest each time) I noticed that admiral was no longer displaying a quote and was now in the section shown as no quotes produced along with around 60 other companies. Long story short, a guy ran his car off the road into my front yard and hit a tree. The tree is a complete loss. He has insurance (thank god!). Car Insurance - Young Driver 18 years old Male - NEED HELP PLEASE!!!!?

I have recently passed my driving test (3 days ago!) and will be buying a car ASAP as I have a job lined up and have just left school. I've tried tens of comparison sites and even rang some insurance companies direct to try and get a better quote... I have looked at the smallest possible engine size, that being 0.8l and 1l engines. I've looked at cars such as FORD KA, Vauxhall Corsa, Nissan Micra, Renault Clio and a few others too. The cheapest quote I have found for all of the cars is for a 2000 Ford KA 1.3l 3dr 4 seats (the smallest KA engine size possible) and that price was 3,800 paying monthly with a company called My Policy . However, I have used various other KA registration plates all the same engine size but some being 2003 models or 2005 and the insurance jumps to over 6,000! I haven't found another FORD KA cheaper than 5,500 and obviously if I can't get that one particular car out of the thousands for sale that insurance quote will be invalid anyway. Basically, I've tried everything. Adding named drivers (with lots of driving experience 30+ years), putting my car in a locked garage, on the road, tried different cars - models, registration plates, ages, engine sizes, and not to forget the countless comparison sites. The funny thing is with MyPolicy I went onto their site directly to get a quote and they were unable to give me a quote when entering exactly the same information into the Tiger.co.uk comparison site, that site brought up the 3,800 quote with MyPolicy but when I use their site directly they can't give me a quote... I know insurance is based on MANY factors, believe me I understand that. I tried entering different post codes (just out of curiosity) and it did help, but only fractionally. It just seems (other than the 1 obscure quote of 3,800 on ONE car, out of the 100+ I've tried) that I can't get a quote cheaper than 5,000 for a car with the smallest engine size and insurance group possible... 6/15 Sat I’m pissed I accidentally deleted all my thoughts yet again.

I talked about how it would be great around page 85 if the boy was Atlas at the party. I talked about the socioeconomic juxtaposition between the two guys and Lily are foils. I talked about cute thoughtful things.

Then, how the responses varied, but what I got out of it was that everyone needs a different amount of time to mourn. It’s hard to move forward after such a great love is lost. OH!

I talked about how my greatest epic love story was two people growing up together, changing and evolving next to each other and as they changed and grew, somehow they only become more and more perfect for each other. It’s epic and a dream because that’s just not reality.

If your deceased loved one comes back, who knows how suited for each other you’ll be anymore? At some point, you just have to live with the fact that someone new is your future.

I walked into horizon books three times today to read this. I ended up having to buy it. Tia asked again why I didn’t just get a kindle…I think there is honestly something subconsciously comforting about holding a book and turning the pages. It goes back to when I was younger and had so much fun reading. It really is just a comfort. I have tried to read before on a kindle and just am less inclined to read. Maybe that’s just times I don’t feel like reading. I’ve read many a book on this phone right here.
