He is filled to the brim with Chaos Energy and, if in enough distress, that chaos energy can be corrupted and trigger his Dark Form, which can cause a big ass doomsday since he is directly linked to the Chaos Emeralds and will corrupt them as well.

So...imagine if radioactive energy just started to kill everything living...Not ideal.
