THE BEST OF DANIEL BRÜHL

It’s dumb, honestly.

You get this seemingly brilliant idea of turning to foreign films so you’re forced to read subtitles and focus—a problem you’ve been noticing of late—but in doing so, you end up with a more destructive distraction.

“Who’s that guy, again? The one in all those international productions?” That’s how I found myself on my Daniel Brühl marathon-turned-obsession.

It was his role as the cute Nazi in Inglorious Basterds that first put him on my radar. Over the years, I would see him in The Fifth Estate, Burnt, Woman in Gold, The Zookeeper’s Wife, and The King’s Man. Midway through All Quiet on the Western Front, I was like, “All this needs is that German actor…” and I had to chuckle when he later appeared on screen. I also checked out the first season of The Alienist because I was intrigued by what he and Dakota Fanning as leads would do with such a spooky-looking show.

Adorable as he was in his breakout role in Good Bye, Lenin!, it was his performance in the critically-acclaimed Rush that caused me to spiral. Similar to when Benedict Cumberbatch took on the modern version of Sherlock, it was like seeing Brühl with new eyes. His playful take on Helmut Zemo in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was the final nail in the coffin. I don’t imagine it’s all too different from what Tom Hiddleston did to fans of Marvel as Loki.

I’m actually at the tail-end of this obsession now that I’ve seen everything I can get a hold of—around 39 films, two TV shows, a documentary, a music video, countless interviews, a bunch of ads, and a handful of fan cuts—but he has a lot of works worth recommending so I thought I would share them on here. This will mostly be a subjective list with priority on projects I found most interesting which showcase his range best. Like, I enjoyed The Bourne Ultimatum but he was on screen for a total of 2 minutes so I wouldn’t include that here.

RUSH (2013) This biographical sports film written by Peter Morgan—the man behind The Crown—centers on the rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda in the 70s. Not a fan of F1 or sports in general. I have nothing against either, just zero interest. But this character-driven film, much like Ford vs Ferrari, had me at the edge of my seat the entire ride. And it surprisingly has one of the best meet-cutes—and accidental wingmen—I’ve seen yet.

Brühl delivers an Oscar-worthy performance in this role. For someone who needed a lot of convincing he could do the character justice, he truly went above and beyond. For one, he befriended and studied Lauda, the iconic F1 figure he was portraying. No easy feat considering Lauda being, well… Lauda. In interviews, Brühl recounts the story of the memorable invite he got from Lauda to meet in Vienna. This would be their first meeting and Lauda told Brühl outright that he should only bring hand luggage so he can piss off if they don’t like each other.

He would end up staying a few days and buying additional clothes.

He also spent a month in Vienna to nail the accent, making sure to capture the arrogance and irony innate to it. And although he got driver training for the role, he also considered the tiniest details like which went on first: helmet or gloves? There was also the tricky business of looking graceful entering a tiny F1 car—a bigger challenge for Chris Hemsworth who plays Hunt—but an obstacle all the same.

All the hard work paid off. It was well-received by audiences, critics, and the F1 world. The first time Lauda saw the film he went, “Holy shit, that’s really me”. Lauda’s friends thought he did voiceover work for it. Director Ron Howard was so pleased with Brühl’s performance that he went out of his way to show an unfinished cut of the movie to the producers of The Fifth Estate (2013). This gracious act would land Brühl the co-lead role opposite Benedict Cumberbatch.

GOOD BYE, LENIN! (2003) Can't tell if it's just because the two films have the same composer and were created around the same time, but this tragicomedy set in East Germany reminded me so much of my beloved Amélie. This is definitely more dramatic and political but it has that same mix of whimsy, heart, and charm. With its budget, it was meant to be an indie film, but the story of a son who would recreate a faux-socialist world to keep his mother alive captured the heartstrings of audiences, not just in Germany but also worldwide. Brühl plays the son and his success with this film was a double-edged sword: although it would open doors for him internationally, he would also be typecast as the “nice guy” in his home country.

INGLORIOUS BASTERDS (2009) This has one of the best, most intense opening sequences in all of cinema… and one of the greatest villains. In this wild alternate universe from Quentin Tarantino, he rewrites the ending of World War II. It’s the right balance of dark, hilarious, and entertaining—my favorite from the auteur’s works. Here Brühl plays a cute and charming Nazi, which is very confusing to the senses.

Aside from Brühl, it was also my first introduction to Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender, and Melanie Laurent—all fantastic European actors who’ve crossed over to Hollywood after the success of this movie. “Crossing over” seems ubiquitous now but, at that time, giving most of the lead roles to then relatively unknown actors must have been a risk. But for this, it was necessary. Language plays a huge part in this trilingual film and casting native speakers grounded it in authenticity. Tarantino originally had Leonardo di Caprio in mind to play Hans Landa. Whether he meant for him to learn German or to speak English with a German accent, who knows. Either way, it’s safe to say that would have been a different film.

THE EDUKATORS / DIE FETTEN JAHRE SIND VORBEI (2004) This anti-capitalist film, which has become a cult classic, captures the spirit, idealism, recklessness, and angst of young revolutionaries who just want a better world. Where one stands on the measures taken, or even their sentiment, can be considered a litmus test. With or without reference to this quote from the movie—“Under 30 and not liberal, no heart. Over 30 and still liberal, no brain.”—is up to the viewer.

There needs to be a suspension of disbelief for the series of events that takes place but the setting is necessary for the clash of worlds to happen. It’s not a perfect movie but the issues they debate about in length… they’re still discussions we’re having nearly 20 years later.

p.s. this has my favorite behind-the-scenes of all of Brühl’s projects. Though he hasn’t lost his sense of humor, he seems to have become more reserved as he got older. HERE, at this period in his life, he’s a total goofball bordering on loose cannon.

THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER (2021) Though I’ve enjoyed quite a few MCU movies, I’m not invested in the universe at all, so watching this wasn’t a priority. In fact, I was ready to settle on YouTube compilations made by devoted fans of all the scenes Brühl was in. Upon seeing clips, however, I got intrigued by his character so I still ended up watching the miniseries and also Captain America: Civil War (2016).

Both were better than I expected. Civil War is more serious, while TFATWS is more playful, but both face relevant issues along with formidable foes. Brühl’s villain in Helmut Zemo is fascinating because he tears the mighty Avengers apart with mere patience, fury, and intelligence… and his motivations are understandable. He lets his character loose in TFATWS—at one point, on the dance floor—and it’s magnificent. His mission is still the same, but this time he does it with a lot of charm, humor, and fabulous Sokovian style. A Turkish delight, personified.

ME AND KAMINSKI / ICH UND KAMINSKI (2015) Brühl’s Sebastian Zöllner is a repulsive and sleazy journalist who has greasy hair and wears too much cologne but I can’t get enough of his chaotic energy. His magnum opus is hitched on a legendary artist dying and his fantasy is to turn the orphaned daughter into a sugar mommy. It’s all kinds of messed up but he plays the hell out of the smarmy dirtbag so it’s a lot of fun. This is Brühl’s second collaboration with Wolfgang Becker, who directed Good Bye, Lenin! Daniel Kehlmann, the writer whose eponymous book this film was based on, would later write Brühl’s directorial debut, Nebenan.

NO REGRETS / NICHTS BEUREUEN (2001) This is reminiscent of the slightly problematic but highly enjoyable teen comedies and coming-of-age films of the 90s. It’s like an edgier Can’t Hardly Wait: boy goes through cringe-worthy measures to get the girl he’s long been pining for, his two closest pals have nothing but dumb advice to offer, yet he still ends up on the path to self-discovery. It’s awkward, chaotic, frustrating, and beautiful—but such is adolescence.

Brühl and his co-star Jessica Schwarz fall in love on the set of this film. And although they would break up years later, the tenderness between their scenes together is palpable and there’s something rather bittersweet about seeing that captured in perpetuity.

For a more straightforward rom-com, he has Lila, Lila (2009). It’s about a guy who passes off a manuscript as his own to impress a girl and the hilarity that follows. It’s on YouTube for those who need a fun and light watch.

THE ALIENIST (2018 – 2020) Based on the novel of the same name, this moody psychological thriller set in late 19th century New York follows a psychiatrist—then called an Alienist—who investigates a series of grisly murders with methods still considered new and controversial at that time, such as psychology and fingerprinting. He gets by with a little help from his friends, John Moore, an illustrator for the New York Times, and Sara Howard, a society woman who works in the NYPD.

In the lead role of Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, Brühl plays the dark, complex, and mysterious Alienist whose study of mental pathologies and deviant behaviors reveals much of himself and his past.

LESSONS OF A DREAM / DER GANZ GROßE TRAUM (2011) This film is loosely based on Konrad Koch, an educator and pioneer who brought football to Germany in the late 19th century. In the movie, the sport is used as a means to pique students’ interest in the English language and culture—both considered barbaric by the Germans at that time. A heartwarming tale of a teacher who overcomes insurmountable odds and inspires students along the way, it’s the German equivalent of Dead Poet’s Society.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (2022) This story, the third adaptation of the 1929 novel, “Im Westen nichts Neues”, conveys the futility of war like no other. There aren't as many films on World War I as there are on World War II, fewer ones that tell it from a German perspective, so this is doubly unique in that regard. Powerful watch but 10/10 not like to relive it again. Apart from producing it with his company, Amusement Park, Brühl plays Matthias Erzberger, the German State Secretary who pushes for armistice talks with the Allied forces.

An ideal companion watch to this would be Joyeux Noël / Merry Christmas (2005), another WWI movie Brühl stars in, which depicts the unbelievable Christmas truce between French, German, and Scottish soldiers in 1914. His linguistic ability shines here as he shifts between German, French, and English effortlessly. (Half German, half Spanish, Brühl speaks a total of five languages: those three plus Spanish and Catalan.)

The Zookeeper’s Wife (2017) and Alone in Berlin (2016) also recognize the bravery of defiance at the height of tyrannical regimes. Although between the two, I would skip the latter.

JOHN RABE (2009) This biographical film set in China tells the incredible true story of a German businessman who uses his Nazi Party membership to create an International Safety Zone in Nanking. This was in the late 1930s, during the Rape of Nanjing. In this six-week carnage by the Imperial Japanese Army—which includes sexual assault, mutilations, and killing contests—upwards of 200,000 Chinese are brutally murdered. The protective zone manages to save around the same number of civilians.

Brühl doesn’t play the titular Rabe, but his character, Dr. Georg Rosen, is one of few Westerners who decides to remain and protect Nanking even as conflict escalates. Dr. Rosen was a German Diplomat instrumental in the creation of the safety zone.

p.s. with all these heroic roles in his catalog, I’m convinced Brühl would be a frontrunner to play President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, should a movie be made about him and Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. You heard it here first.

NEXT DOOR / NEBENAN (2021) This is Brühl’s directorial debut. Here he plays a darker, fictionalized version of himself. Definitely not for everyone but quite enjoyable if you’re familiar with his major works and public persona, appreciate the ingenuity of one-location movies, and delight in British-style meta humor.

Pre-requisite viewing for maximum enjoyment: Good Bye, Lenin!, Captain America: Civil War, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

alfa romeo: the side characters in every romcom/divorce film who are in a really healthy relationship but for some reason aren't the focus. theres probably an indie film about them with a lot of tasteful sex scenes, but we haven't seen it yet because it wasnt advertised well and isn't in theaters for some reason

aston martin: slytherin quiddich team. alternatively succession season 3. alternatively the story of a god and his immortal son, the father punishing the son for eternity for wishing for something of which he did not know the power. alonso is also there

haas: i mean gene and guenther are giving me mafia kdrama vibes but i'm a little hung up on the fact that the car went from being covered in the russian flag to having a greyscale usa flag within like. a year? thats. thats pretty wild bro. follow the haas f1 livery for more geopolitics. also suck my balls mate? i cant fit the entire vibe in a few sentences im sorry i have to give up

AlphaTauri: if Americas Next Top Model and Love Island had a child. two drivers are competing to model the height of fashion (meets function) but also yuki just got dumped and he's learning to love again. also theres a lot of talk about opening a restaurant so it might be Top Chef a little

Williams: its the comeback story the world has been waiting for but it's going on...kind of a long time. it's like if ford vs ferrari were eighty hours long. but you're looking at alex for eighty hours so it's okay

so bradley definitely cooks and she’s gotten way better and is no longer burning risotto anymore (she makes a mean stir fry - bradley did you know corn starch makes the sauce thicker? yeah, sweetheart, i did, sorry - but are way too competitive, so they only play board games if they can be on the same team? (monopoly is banned from the house). instead, they’re really into movies and tv shows (i know in my bones those two are obsessed with hbo 9pm sunday shows and when either one of them is out of town and misses an episode, they both wait till they’re together). she also teases bradley for liking dad movies (biopics, history and war movies, ford vs. ferrari…), but she just loves snuggling up with him on the sofa 🥰 i think she both of them travel a lot, they like to stay in and be with each other when they are home?

and for the reading part….so @howdysebby mentioned this once and i am in love with the idea. since smart aleck’s always going to off-sites and traveling for work, she’s a big reader. and yeah she reads the typical new yorker and new york magazine picks etc - but she also loves those regency romance novels with the gaudy covers that i imagine are in never ending stacks in hudson news stockrooms through the country’s airports. and so tiernan had this idea that smart aleck tries to like occasionally incorporate some of the more cringe dialogue from said books when her and bradley are intimate because she loves nothing more than messing with him? and at first bradley is like what the fuck woman? but he eventually kind of likes it? this only happens when they’ve been together for awhile? like when they’re engaged and on, but i just thought it was hilarious and perfect for them

Sebastian always looked good. From RedBull to Ferrari and now Aston Martin. You along with what seems like every single female fan agreed with you. Now, let’s not forget, you yourself are a model. A mainstream, famous one at that, who happened to be at the Monaco Grand Prix a few years ago. You were nineteen and he 23 about to win his first WDC, also that day he would propose to you. From the moment your eyes met you knew, Sebastian was going to be a force in your life.  

Little did you know how fast you would come to love the Ferrari driver. Being his wife has a lot of perks as well. When you’re not doing a shoot, you’ll be at races with him, trying to be supportive of his demanding career. It wasn’t easy on you or him, to be honest, but it was worth every single second.  

When the news broke Sebastian wouldn’t be continuing with Ferrari, you were livid. Sebastian almost had to take away your electronics to stop you from giving Mattia an earful. Of course, you calmed down and were especially proud when Sebastian announced his contract with Aston Martin on Ferrari's 1,000th race day, overshadowing them by a long shot. Besides that small hiccup, all was well in your little world.  

While Seb and you didn’t have kids yet, Charles still remained your unofficial love child with Sebastian and you had him and Charlotte over a lot. Then came Lance Stroll to add to your family and finally Mick sealing the deal. You’ll never admit it, but Mick’s your favorite. He’s just a little angel, and you really wanted to see him succeed in Formula 1. Which, brings us to the day before the Aston Martin livery reveal.  

“Seb, they’re going to be here soon!” you called from downstairs.  

You hear light footsteps and Seb appeared at the base of the steps in your home in Kensington. It was actually closed to Lewis, who was another close family friend.  

“Why must we have the children over?” Seb groaned.  

“Because you secretly enjoy having the younger drivers look up to you.”  

Sebastian hugged you from behind while pressing a soft kiss to your cheek as the doorbell rang. Without hesitation, Sebastion sprang toward the door causing you to laugh at his actions. No matter how much he denies it, he enjoys having the younger drivers  

“Y/N!” Mick called as he rushed to give you a big hug.  

“Mick Schumacher, I am so proud of you!”  

He blushed at your compliment before moving to let Charles and Lance hug me. The trio was invited over to watch a movie before Seb left tomorrow, to Aston Martin F1 headquarters for the launch.  

While the drivers watched Ford vs Ferrari, you made your way upstairs and began looking through photo albums that you kept of your very favorite moments. The picture of Seb and you posing together, after your wedding ceremony was your favorite.  

One that stood out was the large smile on his face when he won his first Championship. That smile had been gone for a long time since Ferrari. All you want is to see him smile like that again.  

“Bye Y/N!” the trio yelled, shaking you out of your thoughts.  

Sebastian cleaned up downstairs before crawling in bed with you. He could sense something was off with you, but to his better judgment, he decided to let you bring up the issue with him when you felt ready.  

“Seb?”  

“Yes, darling.”  

You sighed, “We’ve been married ten years, and I can tell when you’re upset. Your love for racing, do you think it will come back now that you’re at a new team?”  

Sebastian held onto your hand while looking you in the eye. “It already has come back, and you helped me tremendously,” he replied. “Even though you almost made we mess up my start at the Monaco Grand Prix in 2010.”  

You gave Sebastian a dirty look. “Not my fault you couldn’t keep your eyes off of me when I was a grid girl.”  

“If they ever brought the grid girls back, would you be mine?”  

Sebastian looked at you with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. You really would say yes, just for him, but you also weren’t ready to give him the satisfaction.  

“Goodnight, Seb.”  

“Sweet dreams, my love...I’ll be dreaming of my grid girl.”  

The next morning you two found yourselves at Headquarters after a long drive. While Sebastian did the presentation, you waited in his room with a bedroom, bath suite, and sitting room. Of all the places to have a suite, the Aston Martin Headquarters was not the first place that came to mind.  

Finally, you heard the key swipe and the door swung open, revealing a pleasant surprise. When you saw Seb, a small shiver ran through your spine. Green was definitely his color this year. Might have been red last year, but good by red and a warm welcome to green!

“So, handsome.” You smirked.  

Sebastian smirked back at you before giving you a quick kiss. “So, you like the uniform?”  

“It’s perfect. I really think green is your color, Seb,” you replied as you sat on his thigh.  

Your eyes met as you became very away from the rough fabric rubbing against your own jeans. Sebastian’s hands flew to your waist as he scooted you up his thigh slightly.  

“My God, you’re going to kill me woman with those looks.” he groaned as I moved my hips ever so slightly against him. “What do you want, Angel?”  

“You.”  

“How?”  

“Rubbing my clit till I can’t take it anymore.”  

Sebastian kissed you passionately on the lips while taking off your jeans and underwear, quickly attaching a finger against your bundle of nerves as you arched your back in response.  

You let out a loud moan as Sebastian continued circling your clit with his thumb while two fingers slipped inside you, quickly finding that sweet spot.  

“Se––Seb!” You cried out.  

Sebastian smirked widely, as he picked up the pace. “You look so beautiful, taking my fingers Angel.”

“Fuck, Sebastian!”

“Yes, that’s the plan.” he quipped playfully.  

Leave it to Sebastian to make a joke in the middle. Sending him a glare, he curled his fingers in you as waves of pleasure rolled through you quickly. You gripped his shoulders, as your legs began shaking, signaling to Sebastian you were close.  

“Seb...Seb, I’m close.” you moaned softly.  

“You like the green uniform?”  

All you could do was moan in response as he slowed down his movements only slightly.  

“Then I want you to come right on it,” he demanded with an authoritative tone causing another shiver to run down your spine.  

Without warning Sebastian picked up speed again while ramming his fingers in you, twisting and curling them to your sweet spot every time. Your moans became louder and needier, as fireworks were going through you.  

“Sebastian!” you screamed out as you finally came undone. You grinded down on the rough green fabric of his race suit, only causing more pleasure to roll through you.  

Sebastian continued to rub your clit through your orgasm, and soon you felt liquid running down your legs. When you caught your breath, you saw Sebastian looking at you in amazement.  

“You squirted, Angel,” he explained.  

“Seb, you unlocked that a long time ago, yet you still get so surprised every time.” you chuckled as he picked up, and walked to the bathroom.  

Seb chuckled. “Well, if I’d known me wearing green turned you on quickly, I should've shown you the uniform sooner!”  

Your eyes flicked up to Sebastian, while you hung onto his like a baby koala bear. “You had this for a while?”  

“Yeah, about a month.”  

“Well...you should expect every time you put on the suit for this to happen.” You replied with a smirk.  

Seb’s pupils were still blown as he kissed you again. “Anytime for you, Angel.”  

With a final kiss, Sebastian started a warm bath for you to soak in. Despite being married for a decade, and knowing each other better than the other, you still managed to keep each other surprised. It was just the nature of your relation, and you wouldn’t change it for the world. You were glad the grid girls were gone but thankful they had them at one point because you might’ve not met your man in green. After all, green is the new sexy.

I mean yeah!!!! it super is!!!! but I mean y'know it's like??? it's one of those things that to me for a long time felt like a thing so exclusive to like our generation only???? like it's one thing to like something but to like it that deeply that like... you have things of your faves that influence your own sense of style and give you comfort and confidence to emulate just???? for the longest time felt like something that's like "no my parents don't do that they're boomers they don't do fandom stuff like that" but like??? now lately more than ever in my life I've noticed more and more that my dad a lot of the times interacts with media in the EXACT same way I do??? Like??? you wouldn't believe how many times I went over to his house and caught him watching Ford vs. Ferrari when I was in the middle of my own joker craze. How he's always chronically re-watching Deadwood and The Sopranos the same as I do with stuff like Midnight Mass or The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And then THIS revelation about the fucking ties really takes the cake for me. Because to this day I still have jewlery that I wear that's representative of fictional characters in some way- and it's like??? yeah man. turns out my dad and I have that in common when for a LONG time I didn't think that we did. and it's kindof heartwarming to realize that after YEARS and years. And it makes me feel closer to my dad knowing how fictional characters influenced HIM to be the way that he is too (it's a whole other story but last night he told me that one line in The Godfather that is really just SO innocuous like literally changed him as a person??? And that is making me cry just thinking about it). Like wow. Yeah turns out our experiences with fiction and fandom are a LOT more universal than stuck-up trolls would have us believe! And it's beautiful!!!

The only problem with moving up in the world was that it was utterly boring. When Claude had been a car salesman out on the floor, there was some sort of thrill to the job. Could he convince the next customer to buy something big and flashy? Could he nab them before Hilda or one of the other sales reps got them? Would he have to eat canned soup for the rest of the week?

 Hell, even climbing his way to manager had at least been an entertaining game of cat and mouse as he taunted Lorenz into self-sabotaging. Now that he’d made it, though, all of that was gone. The only thing left was boring paperwork.

 Utterly mind-blowingly boring paperwork. Claude twirled his pen and sighed as he looked up. Why he even bothered to wear the suit anymore, he didn’t know. Through the blinds, he spotted Hilda lounging on the waiting room’s sofa, no doubt taking an extra long break. Lorenz was chatting up a woman, trying to look smooth as he gestured at the BMW M3 beside him. He never realized how dorky he was instead. Maybe Claude could go bug him later; it was fun figuring out the ways Lorenz vied for his job.

 A flash of red caught his eye and Claude perked up as a tall, red-headed man walked through the parking lot and to the entrance. Judging by his loose tie, messy hair, and dark sunglasses, he was either a spoiled, rich college boy or a more modest worker barely able to keep himself together. Either way, an easy mark.

That didn’t make Claude want to talk to him any less. Hurriedly, he got up and opened the door to the office. Fortunately, Lorenz’s hands were tied and he didn’t have to race him to the doors. The only one left was Hilda, and she never put up a fight.

 Which, if he were honest, was a terrible quality for a sales rep, but she’d always managed her sales when she did try. Barely glancing at her as he passed, he informed her, “I’ll handle this.”

 “Huh?” Curious, she glanced up from her phone at the door, then at him, and groaned. “Is it already that time of month?”

 Claude ignored her grumblings as he smoothened out his jacket and tightened his tie. He had to look his best, after all. Running a hand through his hair, he glanced at his reflection on the hood of the Subaru BRZ. Yeah, he still had it.

 The redhead stepped inside. Claude approached him with a grin. “Looking for a new car?”

 The man laughed, bright and airy. “This is a dealership. Why else would I be here?”

 Sure, put like that it was a silly question, but that was what small talk was: silly questions with silly answers. The insult rolled off his shoulders like water off a duck and Claude smirked. “Well, you could be here for the perks.”

 “Like you?” The man leered, his green eyes sparkling as he played along. There was a barely restrained intelligence in there, one that Claude liked drawing out. He was certain his own expression was the exact same.

 “I knew you had an eye for quality.” Claude winked, brushing his long hair back just enough that the stranger could see his golden earring. “Depending on the car you pick, I could be interested.”

 “Gold-digger?” the man teased. As he shifted, his tie loosened slightly, just enough to give Claude a peek at his collar bones. It had to be on purpose. Claude refused to believe otherwise.

 “I’m a salesman, can’t blame me for trying.” Claude leaned against the silver Chevrolet Corvette nearby, running his fingers along the edge. “Though, there’s just something about these higher-end models. They’re really…luxurious.”

 “It’s that new car smell,” he agreed, coming closer. “Or those warm seats.”

 Noticing the ring on the customer’s hand, Claude tapped his finger. “And the ring?”

 “Removeable.” He waggled his brows, a gesture probably more comical than he’d intended. Ring still on, he finally held out his hand. “Sylvain.”

 He smirked, finally reaching his objective. Shaking Sylvain’s hand firmly, he replied, “Claude. What sort of car are you after?”

 “Something fast. Flashy.” Sylvain purred, his thumb stroking Claude’s thumb before reluctantly letting go. This close, Claude could smell the cologne on him, a refreshing scent that made him think of the sea after a storm. “Strong.”

 “I think we have just what you’re after.” It was too soon to reach back, to twist Sylvain’s dark green tie around his brown wrist. A missed opportunity, one that Claude would have to correct later. “A new model came in the back. I know you’ll like it.”

 “I think I already see something I like,” Sylvain murmured, resting his hands on the Chevrolet and caging Claude in. His eyes darkened and Claude mentally patted himself on the back for picking his earthy cologne this morning.

 “Do you now?” Claude gently tugged on his collar, licking his lips. “I’m expecting a high commission.”

 A wet rag hit Sylvain’s check with a squelchy splat. Sylvain blinked. Claude stared at him blankly. They both turned to the right to find Hilda standing next to the water cooler. Rolling her eyes, she huffed, “Do you guys have to do this every time?”

 “What?” Sylvain whined, pulling off the rag as he straightened up. “Did that really deserve a wet rag?”

 “Yes!” Hilda groaned, returning to the leather couch and plopping down on it. “If you’re going to give me a show, at least make it entertaining. Enough with the nerdy pick up lines! They’re so lame.”

 “Lame?” Sylvain clutched his heart, mortally wounded.

 Claude patted him gently on the back. “You’re just out of practice. It’s okay.”

 “Yours weren’t any better,” Hilda pointed out. Wrinkling her nose, she bemoaned, “You guys are married, just save it for when you get home.”

 “I thought the ring thing was sexy,” Sylvain muttered, slumping on Claude like a heavy, water-logged cloak. His chin rested comfortably on the nook of his shoulders. “And very creative.”

 “Maybe we should both wear it next time?” Claude mused, reaching up to ruffle his husband’s hair affectionately.

 “And what was that weird thing you did before you came out of the office?” Hilda shot him a disgusted look. “Did you just…set up the scene?”

 Claude pursed his lips before slowly ambling off to his office, pulling his slumped over husband with him. “Right. Next time, I’ll just say that internally.”

 “You’re both so fucking dramatic,” Hilda grumbled, lying on the couch dramatically.

 There was a reason he liked her best.

 As Claude closed the door to his office, Lorenz shouted from across the room, “CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE ME A WARNING NEXT TIME?”

Most Picture 2020.

In which we award the Most Picture Oscar to the most-rewatched of the 2020 Best Picture nominees, and track down the Letterboxd member who most obsessively rewatched the Most Obsessively Rewatched Film in our 2019 Year in Review—Avengers: Endgame—to ask “Why?”.

Once again, we dive into the data on the Oscar Best Picture nominees to name not the Best Picture (respect to Parasite!), but what is the Most Picture, as in, which of the nine 2020 finalists was rewatched the most by Letterboxd members?

And the 2020 “Most” Picture Award goes to… Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Letterboxd member Movie15 has the distinction of having logged Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood the most—a whopping 26 times since its August release, and though he hasn’t reviewed it on Letterboxd, we’ve enjoyed his quest to see Tarantino’s latest in as many Los Angeles movie theaters as possible, on 35mm as often as he can.

Bong Joon-ho’s multi-Academy-Award-winning masterpiece, Parasite, comes next, just 859 views behind—Khoi is the Letterboxd member who has most obsessively rewatched the film to date, with eleven recorded watches. Third place (and almost 14,000 views behind the two leaders) goes to Joker, watched the most (seventeen times) by Kenai Fleck, a hard-core Batman fan.

In fourth place, Little Women. Micah Simmons has logged the film fourteen times (but may in fact be pushing 20 views). On the thirteenth view, “I have nothing to add, except for mentioning a shot right before the scene where Amy does *the thing* to Jo, and there’s a crazy shot that foreshadows *the thing* so well and fuck this movie is smart.” Then come Marriage Story, The Irishman, 1917, Jojo Rabbit and Ford v. Ferrari in that order.

The official Letterboxd Most Picture list reveals the combined number of watches for all members with two or more entries for these films.

The Rewatches We Logged Along the Way

Avengers: Endgame was the Most Obsessively Rewatched Film of 2019 in our Year in Review, which means it had the highest number of Letterboxd members logging it five or more times in their diaries.

Member Max Joseph has the distinction of having logged Avengers: Endgame more times than any other. When we told him we needed to know why, he replied: “I’d be honored to talk about my love for Avengers Endgame!” Spoilers follow in this Q&A with Max (though at this point if you haven’t seen Avengers: Endgame it’s probably only because Max has watched it for you). This interview was conducted prior to the 2020 Academy Awards.

How many times do you think you have seen Avengers: Endgame? Max Joseph: Well, I’ve logged it 26 times as of today. But I also think there are a good three or four watches I didn’t log because I occasionally put it on before bed, and just never logged it. So I’d say my final answer is 29, but that honestly may be lowballing it. I have a feeling that by the time the Oscars roll around, it’ll probably be at 30. I always watch every single film, documentary and short nominated for the Oscars, and thankfully, Endgame was nominated!

What’s your reaction to the news that you are the member who has logged it the most? Kind of shocked! I really didn’t even realize how many times I watched it until you told me! I watch Avengers: Endgame because it brings me happiness, and I love the adventure! When it finally came out on Blu-ray and digital, there were a few times I would watch it multiple times in one day. Then I’d throw something else on, then get upset that I wasn’t watching Avengers. So maybe it isn’t as shocking as I had thought!

What keeps you coming back to it? I love all genres of film. Take this season for example. I love the more meaty and dramatic films like Parasite, 1917, Waves, Queen & Slim. I love comedies like Jojo Rabbit and Booksmart. Animation like Toy Story 4, Frozen II and Klaus.

But, you give me someone flying, turning invisible, super speed… that’s where I live. Superhero movies are just my favorites, and I think the reason I keep coming back to Avengers: Endgame is because besides being a superhero movie—which I just naturally gravitate towards—in Endgame, I get a little bit of every genre and mood. I also like that it’s split up into three acts, and each act gives me what I want in a superhero movie:

Act one is the slow burn, which we never really got in the MCU up to this point. It’s the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War, and them dealing with the implications and the new normal of the universe. And this gives a chance for the story to build, and our actors to show off, especially Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson. It gives something new to the fans of the franchise and is one of the biggest reasons I keep coming back for more.

Act two is the “time heist” and it is a pure love letter to the fans of the franchise. They revisit some of the best parts of our MCU journey over the last eleven years and mess with it. Is it fan service? Absolutely! But I think they did it right.

Act three is the final battle at the now-destroyed Avengers headquarters. And this was where the slow burn pays off. It is what we’ve all been waiting for since 2008. The grand finale. The culmination of eleven years and 22 films. We are gifted my favorite battle I’ve ever seen, bone-chilling and heartbreaking moments, as well as the most cathartic endings to the most epic story I’ve ever had the privilege to watch, nearly 30 times over.

What have you noticed with each rewatch? Two things: firstly, how unbelievable the visual effects are. I may be alone in this, but I think Marvel has the best visual effects on the planet. By miles. And rewatching this makes me appreciate how much time and dedication was put into making this. So much happened behind the scenes, that I personally don’t really think about while watching it. But after 26 views, I start to think about green screens, the motion capturing, all of those elements, it’s insane! Go on YouTube and just check out all of that work they did visually. It’s beautiful.

Secondly, how brilliant Robert Downey Jr. is. I’ve been saying it for years, but RDJ was born to play Tony Stark. Has he had many other brilliant performances throughout his career? Absolutely. But I think that if he was not cast as Iron Man, this franchise wouldn’t have turned out the way it did. He is the heart of the MCU. And he has so many brilliant moments throughout the film, meets his dad during the “time heist”, the realization of “the one”, even the way he interacts with his daughter, Morgan. It’s truly exceptional work. I think it’s his best performance as Stark.

What is the single greatest scene in the film? Oy, well that’s near impossible. A few standouts are Cap wielding Mjölnir, the scene with Tony and his dad, the reveal of Professor Hulk, thicc Thor, Cap vs. Cap, “the snap”. There are so many! But I think the popular answer is also the greatest, and that is when our Avengers return.

As soon as I heard Sam Wilson’s (Falcon) voice, I lost my mind. And they brilliantly added “On your left” right before all the portals open up. “On your left” is a callback to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That’s the first line of the movie, and is repeated again at the end. Both times are between Sam and Steve, and it was the same in Endgame. And then you add Alan Silvestri’s score (the song is titled ‘Portals’) which is building and building with emotion, which leads into Cap finally saying…

“Avengers (music cuts) Assemble”… (enter Avengers theme song)

It. Is. Perfection. I have chills as I type this. It was probably the greatest theater experience I’ve had in my life. I was sobbing. Imagine how I was by the end…

What has the overall Avengers cinematic adventure meant to you? I remember seeing the first Iron Man in theaters with some friends in 2008. We all dressed up in suits, because we were at a high school awards show kind of thing, and just went straight to the theater, and we had the best time. From the first moment ’til the end, when Tony says, “I am Iron Man”, then Black Sabbath’s ‘Iron Man’ starts playing, my jaw was on the floor. I gave a standing ovation. In a suit. From that moment on, I knew that this was made for me.

It has given me the greatest moments in a movie theater, incredible discussions with friends and strangers, and although it may seem cheesy, some much-needed happiness in some of the most difficult times in my life. I watch these stories because I love them. They mean something to me. They are an important part of who I am.

What would you say to people who say that blockbusters like these aren't ‘real’ cinema? Hahaha! This is a hilarious question, and I’m thrilled that you asked it. I’ve actually had a good 20 people ask me this, and I always said that I’d write something or make a video about it, so here we go…

Let me start off by saying that Martin Scorsese is arguably one of the greatest directors of all time. I love his work, I respect it, and I encourage everyone to watch his full repertoire, ’cause it’s beautiful.

That being said… ‘real cinema’ is a matter of opinions. To me, Avengers: Endgame is just as much real cinema, as The Irishman, Goodfellas, The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, anything. I don’t care who you are, you can be Martin Scorsese, Kevin Feige, one of my friends, a stranger, I don’t think you have the right to tell me what is ‘real cinema’. You can say something isn’t good, or only being made to earn a profit, but you don’t get to say that movies like this aren’t worthy of being ‘real cinema’. To me, they are. You’re more than entitled to that opinion! I just happen to disagree with you, but you’re not wrong by any means. I’m entitled to my opinion, you’re entitled to yours. And that’s what it comes down to. Opinions.

Thicc Thor—keep or send back to the gym? I totally don’t care. Taika Waititi figured out how to write that character in Thor: Ragnarok, and thankfully they continued writing him this way in Endgame. So as long as the writers continue on the path that Waititi sent him on, I’m good. Make him thicc, give him an eight-pack, as long as the character has purpose and the lines flow naturally, I’m more than satisfied with whatever he looks like.

How amped are you to learn more about Natasha’s background in this year’s Black Widow? Finally! We’ve been waiting since Iron Man 2, and it is finally time for the Black Widow movie she deserves! I’m fascinated by the Red Room, which was where she started her training as a Russian spy. They showed us glimpses of her beginnings in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and I’ve always been hungry for more information because it looked really interesting.

I also think that we may finally find out what happened in Budapest. It was first mentioned in The Avengers back in 2012, as a bit of banter between Black Widow and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and has kind of been a mystery ever since. It was actually mentioned again in Endgame. I’m basing this on the San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel. There was a title card that said “Budapest”, so it would make sense that we’re gonna get what we’ve been asking for!

I’m also thrilled because the cast is awesome. Obviously double Oscar-nominated actor this season, Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz, David Harbour and one of my favorite actors, Florence Pugh, who had an unbelievable 2019, with Fighting With My Family, Midsommar (one of my favorite performances of the decade), and she topped it off with an Oscar-nominated performance in Little Women!

What do you think should win best picture at this year’s Oscars? Parasite. And it’s not even close. I think Parasite is one of the greatest films I’ve seen in my life. I think it deserves that number one slot on your Top 250 Narrative Features list.

It features the best performance from an ensemble, Song Kang-ho should have been nominated for supporting actor (he should be winning). The production design is fabulous. They literally built the Park family’s house for the film! Hong Kyung-pyo’s photography is worthy of being framed. He created a few shots that are permanently engraved in my head (in a good way). And of course, Bong Joon-ho’s direction flows with emotion and his script is original, gripping and electric. He is the definition of a visionary, at the top of his game.

Parasite is the crowning achievement of the decade and should be awarded as such. It would be the perfect way to end the decade with the first foreign-language film (now titled “International Feature Film”) winning Best Picture at the Oscars. #BONGHIVE all the way!

What do you think will win? My heart says Parasite, but I think it may end up going to something like Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, The Irishman or 1917 (which is in my top ten this year). The easy answer is probably Hollywood because it won the Globe, but that doesn’t always translate into an Oscar.

But if it’s not Parasite, I think it should be 1917. It is a technical work of art from Oscar, Golden Globe and Tony Award-winning director Sam Mendes. Roger Deakins outdid himself and is pretty much guaranteed to earn his second Oscar [update: he did!]. Thomas Newman’s score is probably my favorite of the year (possibly of his career), followed closely by Emile Mosseri’s for The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Hildur Guðnadóttir’s for Joker. And George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman should be on everyone’s radar. They’re phenomenal. It’s shaping up to be quite a race this year!

What’s your favorite thing about Letterboxd? I think the reason I love it so much is because it feels like a family. I’ve had such a passion for the cinema for my whole life, and I like to share it wherever I can. But other social platforms (as wonderful as they are), aren’t always the best place to post about every single movie I’ve watched, or a top ten that I make. Letterboxd is the only place where I can let out all of my opinions, all of my thoughts, without feeling embarrassed or like I’m bothering anyone when I say how perfect Avengers: Endgame is. Or if I watch it and spot something new, I can post about it, and have great conversations about what I’ve discovered. It is the place for movie lovers, and it actually helped me love movies more, and to learn more about the crews, studios, and everything behind the film.

Oscar. 92 years young.

It’s time for the BIG ONE. The one we’ve been waiting for all season. The Academy Awards. The 92nd Oscars. The whole awards “season” culminates with tis slog of a night. Let’s see how this works without a host. It’s the second time they’ve done it and I didn’t hate it last year.

The show kicked off with a performance from Janelle Monae singing about “It’s Time to Come Alive”. I don’t know what the song was about it but I love her and her queer, African American self. Billy Porter made an appearance. He’s been strutting it allllll these shows. He looked batshit at the Grammy’s but tonight he looks normal, for him.

Steve Martin and Chris Rock DID NOT CARE. When people don’t give a shit, I love it. The Director category is missing vaginas. There were no black nominees in 1929. There’s one in 2020. Progress. Good shit. Eddie Murphy’s under the stage. Oooooh. They DO NOT CARE.

Regina King is butter. She looks amazing. Of course and as expected, Brad Pitt wins Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He’s won 100% of all the awards all season so this is the icing on the cake. Nice speech. I love him. I love this movie.

I love Mindy Kaling’s dress. She looks outstanding. Of course and as expected, Toy Story 4 wins Best Animated Feature. It really was incredible. Buzz & Woody are legends and now we can include Forky in that list of animated legends.

Josh Gad…..Idina Menzel. Pronounced just like it’s spelled. Take that, John Dumb-Ass Travolta. And that was kick ass. I totally loved the international take on Into the Unknown from Frozen 2.

Why, Diane Keaton, why? Isn’t it done with the whole Annie Hall thing? But the banter with Keanu Reeves was really quite funny. HOLY SHIT BALLS!!! Parasite wins Best Original Screenplay. Is this a sign of things to come?? I REALLY thought Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was going to clean up tonight. But maybe not. Is it going to be a Parasite night??????

What is Timothee Chalamet wearing? Is that a tracksuit? At the Oscars? Dude. What are you doing? I know you’re all fashion-y and shit but I’m not into it. Taika Waititi wins for Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit. A movie which I simply loved and adored. It made me laugh and cry.

Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig decided to go with the craziest thing they could find at the store. At least they’re funny. Because they look nuts. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wins for Production Design. And that makes sense to me. It really looked amazing.

Loved the a cappella medley of clothes songs for Maya and Kristen to sing in advance of Best Costumes. Little Women wins. At least it won something because that’s likely going to be it. Normally the winner looks out of his/her mind when they walk on the stage. This woman looked downright sane.

What is this song that Chrissy Metz is singing? I have no idea what it is but she sounds really good.

I would like to thank Mark Ruffalo for just wearing a goddamn tux and looking fucking fantastic in it.

I absolutely hate Laura Dern’s dress but I love me some Laura Dern. She’s cleaned up all season so cap it off with the Oscar, why don’t ya? Of course and as expected. I don’t know why but it makes me teary-eyed EVERY time Laura Dern thanks Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. I just love it that she thanks her parents and references them as her acting inspiration each time she collects an award.

Ummmmm. What is HAPPENING?? Eminem didn’t show when we WON the damn Oscar for writing this song but he gon show up for a fucking montage??? What is HAPPENING???? I love this. I love that Ray Romana got bleeped. I do love when people get bleeped. Bombshell wins for Hair & Makeup. Which makes sense. John Lithgow isn’t exactly an overly attractive person but making him look like Roger Ailes, who is more or less the earthly embodiment of Jabba the Hutt, is worthy of an award.

Why is it now Best International Feature Film as opposed to Foreign Language Film? Of course and as expected, Parasite wins Best International Feature Film or Foreign Language Film. I guess that Bong Joon-Ho really likes the name change and what it symbolizes.

I know this is terribly un-LGBTQ of me but I just don’t care about Elton John and this song isn’t good.

Ummmmmm. Sigourney Weaver looks INCREDIBLE. If she’s had work done, it’s both discrete and expensive. It’s a testament when you stand next to people like Brie Larson and Gal Gadot and hold your own at nearly 70. Get it done, Sigourney.

Of course and as expected, Renee Zellweger wins Best Actress for Judy. This Texas accent has been present this whole awards season. I don’t get it and I don’t know why. Her speech isn’t meaningful at all. It’s just names. Blah. Well, now, we’re trying to make it meaningful but I’m not sure it’s working.

Let’s stand up for Jane Fonda, shall we? She’s a fucking movie star. She looks REMARKABLE. Don’t get me wrong. She’s 81 years old and has been sliced and diced every which way but loose but still….she looks bananas amazing. Best Picture, y’all. What’s it gonna be???? The anticipation is palpable!!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnddddddddddddddd the Oscar goes to: PARASITE!!!! I mean at this point it’s no surprise. First non-English movie ever to win Best Picture. I’m into it. I love it. The speeches are wonderful. I loved that Tom Hanks and Charlize were all like…Bring the light back up. Let them speak!

My Top Ten Movies Of 2019

While I have been rather lazy writing here (sorry), I have still been watching a lot of movies cause I love to catch a good movie. This year I saw a lot of good movies that knocked my socks off while others were total shit. It’s been a year of ups and downs for film in 2019, but we all have some good movies to recommend should someone ask.

So without further adue, here are what I think are the best movies of 2019. If you agree/disagree with me, leave a note and let’s debate it.  If your favorite movie isn’t here that means I either didn’t see it yet, or if I did, then I wasn’t moved by it as much as you were and didn’t like it as much.

This is just my opinion, but I’m always curious to know what movies knocked your socks off this year.

So these are the movie that wowed me this year:

10. Ford vs. Ferrari

I’ve always been a sucker for a good racing movie, but that this is based on a true story made it that much more exciting cause I had no idea if we’d get a happy ending, cause life can be rather unfair sometimes. Both Damon and Bale are brilliant in this movie that was both exciting and damn entertaining. I also found the story very interesting and enlightening as I really didn’t know that much about this story or the race it’s about. Very fun movie that most movie goers would enjoy, especially if you love racing movies!

9. A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood

I grew up watching Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood so I was hoping this film wouldn’t ruin my childhood, and thankfully it didn’t. The whole movie felt like a really big episode of Mr. Rogers which I thought was a unique approach to the story telling aspect of this film. Tom Hanks delivers as Fred Rogers, which just might land him another Oscar… but we’ll have to wait and see. For fans of the show who grew up with Mr. Rogers, this is a great movie that gives insight to the man who was a hero, no matter how much he tried to deny it, as it was a beautiful movie about our favorite neighbor…

8. Jojo Rabbit

This has to be the most ambitious film of 2019… because the balls it must have take to direct to movie alone makes it Oscar worthy. A tender satire about a rather dark moment in human history. It’s about a young boy in Germany during the second world war who is a part of the nazi youth group, and he spends most of the movie talking to his imaginary friend, who happens to be Adolf Hitler. The acting and writing was stirring and even heartbreaking at times. Scarlett Johannson deserves a supporting nod for her performance as the young boy’s mom, and director Taika Waititi deserves a nod just for having the balls to make a film this outrageous and making it surprising funny and great.

7. The Nightingale

I talked to a friend who watched this movie first, and asked him how it was. He wasn’t able to answer, cause he walked out of it 20 minutes into it. I was stunned, as my friend rarely walks out of movies… as we both consider it unprofessional (as reviewers), but he couldn’t handle it. I was like wow, I really have to check out this movie! After watching The Nightingale, I can see why my friend walked out. It is shocking, brutal and has some moments that had even people in my screening walking towards the door. Yet if you can get past the film’s devastating opening, the film progresses into a stirring character piece about revenge and determination to seek closure in a new world. the actors in this movie were amazing and if you can get past the first 20 mins, you might be really moved by this stunning work.

6. Ad Astra

I’m a sucker for a good Sci-Fi movie, and Ad Astra is hand down the best Sci-Fi of 2019. With the feel and pace of something like 2001, this movie had a stirring plot, amazing acting and a tight finish that made the whole journey worth while. I really liked this movie and while it won’t get any love come Oscar time, especially for Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones, it’s definitely a movie worth checking out if you like see all things Science Fiction…

5. A Rainy Day In New York

I’ve always been a huge fan of Woody Allen, and with “A Rainy Day In New York”, he delivers another masterful film full of witty dialogue, great acting and a story while predictable was fun to watch as it unraveled before us. This is in my opinion Woody’s best movie since “Midnight in Paris”, and is totally worth checking out if you’re a fan of his work. It’s great to see younger actors take Allen’s work and bring it into a new century, which made this cute little romantic comedy one of my favorites of the year.

4. The Two Popes

I’m not a very religious person, at all actually, but I still found this film about the story behind the scenes regarding Pope Benedict and Francis before and after Benedict stepped down as Pope, the first person to do so since the 1200s. I found the story very interesting and learned a great deal about both men as their conversations and stories were very fascinating and educational.  While I’m sure the truth was stretched a bit for the film to be entertaining, both Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce and amazing in their roles as the two Popes. A fun film that everyone will enjoy regardless if they’re religious or not…

3. Yesterday

I am a huge Beatles fan, so when I heard about this movie I was very, very excited to check it out. Directed by Danny Boyle, this movie is about a young, struggling musician who is hit by a bus. Yet when he wakes up, he discovers that no one remembers the Beatles. No one except him. He has a moral dilemma to deal with as he can stay silent about what he knows or use the most iconic songs of the last century to resuscitate his ailing music career.  I loved the story and how this situation was approached, and it ended rather well, and made it for me one of the best movies of this year. A celebration of great music in an alternate world that doesn’t remember the best band of all time. A must see for people who are fans of the band… such a great movie!

2. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Is Quentin Tarantino capable of making a bad movie? I’ve yet to be presented with any evidence that would suggest it’s possible. Once Upon a Time In Hollywood is a love letter to Hollywood and how things happen in film and television. The cast is great, the story is cheeky and fun, and the payoff at the end will blow your fucking mind. It kind of twists history just a bit like Quentin kinda did with Inglorious Basterds… but this was the ending we all wished we could’ve had to this story, but real life was sadly far crueler. A great movie if you like to look back and laugh a bit. Not Tarantino’s best movie, but still a hell of a lot of fun, with a great cast.

1. Joker

For a few months, this spot has been locked. When I watched the Joker, the film directed by Todd Phillips, I had a strong feeling that this would be topping my list at the end of the year… and my instincts were correct. The story is surprisingly simple but brilliantly acted, and the fact that there was Zero CGI in this film was a breath of fresh air as this was old school from start to friggin’ finish. Joaquin Phoenix delivers his best performance since Walk The Line, and in my opinion is a damn lock for Best Actor this year, cause he carried this film from start to finish and was astonishingly brilliant in each scene.  Some people are saying this Joker performance is almost as good if not better than Leger’s in the Dark Knight, and while I’m not sure it’s worth having a conversation about regardless of your views. Yes, he was that damn good. Hand down, this was the best movie of 2019, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this dark tale sweeps the Oscars in February…

FORD V FERRARI: ED’s Very Important Thoughts on James Mangold’s Racing Movie

It’s taken me a little longer than usual to write about this movie, maybe because I was so blown away when I first watched it that I really wanted it to sink in before I took the time to do any sort of writing. That doesn’t mean this will be a particularly insightful or intelligent review that might say something new about the movie that hasn’t been said in plenty of other reviews, but if you’re reading this far, you might as well continue, right?

I thought I knew what Ford V Ferrari was going to be from the first time I saw footage at CinemaCon back in April. In fact, the movie works on so many other levels besides the racing scenes, one of the reasons why I wanted to spend a bit more time thinking about it before writing about it.  I never got around to seeing the doc The 24 Hour War, co-directed by Adam Carolla, but it’s a doc that tells the same story using archival footage, something I only realized existed after seeing James Mangold’s film. Fortunately, Mangold has given me enough faith and confidence in his work as a filmmaker that I knew his dramatization would find a way to tell the same story in an equally exciting way, and I was correct.

We meet Christian Bale’s Ken Miles, a cranky British race car driver who doesn’t play by the rules, at an important qualifying race where his car has just been eliminated from racing by officials. Matt Damon’s fellow racer Carroll Shelby offers to placate the angry Miles and gets a wrench thrown at him for his efforts. A year or so later, Miles is running his own car repair shop but having serious money issues. The next time Shelby approaches him, it’s to offer him money to help him design a sportscar for the Ford company to race at Le Mans in 1963, a grueling 24-hour race. Unbeknownst to either of them, Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) had sent his best man Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal) to Italy to negotiate a deal with Enzo Ferrari (Remo Girone) to buy his company so that Ford could get into the sportscar business. That meeting doesn’t end well, and Ferrari’s insults as he sells to another company gets Ford in the type of vengeful mood that could only lead to great innovation. It’s up to Shelby and Miles to work together to design a car that can beat the Ferrari company’s Le Mans winning streak. Although the reason for Miles and Shelby designing this super-car for Ford is primarily for money reasons, it’s just as much about pride and patriotism.  Miles clearly has more to prove as a race car driver who has fallen on hard times.

That’s the set-up, which leads to an exhilarating 2 and a half hours that flies by faster than you might ever expect, and it’s not all racing either. Unlike other movies of this length, the set-up is just as compelling as the actual Le Mans race, and that’s mainly due to the great cast assembled around Bale and Damon.  Very early on in the film, the screenplay – written by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth and Jason Keller – sets up the relationships with Miles’ relationship with his wife (Caitrione Balfe) and son Peter (Noah Jupe), being just as important in telling what is essentially Miles’ story.  As good as Damon is, as always, Bale’s performance as Miles, complete with a constant scowl on his face, is very much what keeps the movie interesting, because there are far more stakes in him winning Le Mans than for Shelby or even Ford. It’s to Bale’s great credit that he is able to make such a cantankerous and frequently unpleasant character as likable as the characteristic charm Damon brings to Shelby.

The movie is based on a true story, so you may already guess how it turns out, but the last hour when it becomes about Miles and Shelby having to fight back against edicts from the Ford Company, in the form of Josh Lucas’ Leo Beebe, Ford’s right hand man.  It’s another interesting level to the film that’s very relevant in terms of people having to fight against the dominance of the corporations. That might be especially ironic when you realize that the corporation releasing this (Fox) was recently bought by an even bigger corporation (Disney), something that’s hard to ignore.

Sure, there’s a ton of machismo in this movie, and it’s a little disturbing that Ford vs. Ferrarijoins the long list of films this year that has failed to “read the room” and all the calls for diversity, since it’s about as much a white man’s story as you can possibly get. That said, it’s not often when I watch a movie where there’s only one prominent female role with an actor I don’t know or have never heard of her. That’s the case with Balfe, and she completely blew me away, playing so well off of Bale with most of her scenes being on the domestic side of things. Noah Jupe is also really great in Shia Labeouf’s Honey Boy(currently in select cities), and he also is given such a wonderful story arc in his relationship with his father.

It might be somewhat obvious by now, but James Mangold is one of the most underrated and underappreciated directors working today, mainly since he rarely remains in the same genre for more than one movie. Even when he did The Wolverine and Logan back-to-back with Hugh Jackman as the title character (of both movies, oddly), they were very different films. As much as Ford vs. Ferrari blew me away in terms of the filming, editing and sound design used to create the Le Mans racing scenes, the domestic side of Miles’ life keeps you just as riveted to the screen.

Ford V Ferrari is not only one of the best movies of the year, but possibly the best movie of Mangold’s brilliant career. It’s a movie I know I’ll be able to watch over and over, if only to marvel at the sheer quality of all aspects of its filmmaking. I already have tickets to rewatch it in IMAX this Friday.

RUSH (2013) Daniel Brühl as Niki Lauda

Though I've already seen Daniel in several movies over the years, it was this role that made me see him in a whole new light. It sparked the obsession of needing to know everything about him and seeing everything that he's been in. It's what got me into the fandom and back into Tumblr after years of major fan-girl inactivity. That was 6 months ago. The insanity has abated a little bit now that I'm running short on fuel but it's still ongoing.

This biographical sports film written by Peter Morgan (The Crown) centers on the rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda in the 70s. Not a fan of F1 or sports in general—nothing against either, just zero interest—but this character-driven film, much like Ford vs Ferrari, had me at the edge of my seat the entire ride. And it surprisingly has one of the best meet-cutes and accidental wingmen I’ve seen yet.

Brühl delivers an Oscar-worthy performance in this role. For someone who needed a lot of convincing he could do the character justice, he truly went above and beyond. For one, he befriended and studied Lauda, the iconic F1 figure he was portraying. No easy feat considering Lauda being, well… Lauda.

In interviews, Brühl recounts the story of the memorable invite he got from Lauda to meet in Vienna. This would be their first meeting and Lauda told Brühl outright that he should only bring hand luggage so he can piss off if they don’t like each other.

He would end up staying a few days and buying additional clothes.

He also spent a month in Vienna to nail the accent, making sure to capture the arrogance and irony innate to it. And although he got driver training for the role, he also considered the tiniest details like which went on first: helmet or gloves? There was also the tricky business of looking graceful entering a tiny F1 car—a bigger challenge for Chris Hemsworth who plays Hunt—but an obstacle all the same.

All the hard work paid off. Rush was well-received by audiences, critics, and the F1 world. The first time Lauda saw the film he went, “Holy shit, that’s really me”. Lauda’s friends thought he did voiceover work for it. Director Ron Howard was so pleased with Brühl’s performance that he went out of his way to show an unfinished cut of the movie to the producers of The Fifth Estate (2013). This gracious act would land Brühl the co-lead role opposite Benedict Cumberbatch.

Now, 10 years later, he is shooting another film with Howard called Eden. It's a survival thriller with a star-studded cast that includes Jude Law, Ana de Armas, and Sydney Sweeney. In early 2024, he's also releasing Race For Glory: Audi vs. Lancia, another racing film, but this time with Burnt co-star Riccardo Scamarcio.

It's been 10 days since my 10 day retreat. (Edit: actually, 20 now but I didn't get to paint this draft until now!) I haven't yet been able to draft up my thoughts for this blog, but I will. And life, in the meanwhile, carries on.

I spent my first days out with with Mohit, a local Puneite who, almost as soon as the Noble Silence ended, invited me to stay with him and his family in a suburb of the city. He wanted to tour me around the important sites, but admitted that he hasn't yet been himself. We would have to hire a tour guide. Not a problem, I said lead the way!

We started by going his place, for a home cooked meal, to have a tour and look at his family mementos and childhood drawings. I got very excited about the cutlery holder which I imagine is fairly standard in Indian homes, but which represented to me the richness of the treat I was getting to experience. They don't have these in restaurants or hostels, where I chat mainly with foreigners, or on occasion traveling Indians. Home life - the settled-in and staying-put life in another country - It's not normally accessible! I was stoked to look around the kitchen and fridge.

Mohit brought me to the local shrines and temples, snapping selfies and sharing his life stories. We drank sweet lime juice from the street vendor he visited in his school years, a vigorous man caught in time, plying the same crowd on the same spot; his mechanical press, cracked cart, and faded umbrella other relics from those days long past.

We visited his old school, well-regarded for fostering leadership qualities in its well-rounded, only male students. It reminded me of my own high school, though dustier, on larger grounds, and with 50 students crowded into each classroom. Unfortunately, we arrived too far ahead of the final bell, and left before I could investigate an empty classroom and interview an Indian teacher.

Still driving around in search of 'unmissable' experiences, we went to the German Cafe near the Osho compound, which was the site of a terrorist attack a few years back. In fact, we later discovered, this day was precisely the 10-year anniversary of the event. A small vigil was up on the sidewalk, but it was business-as-usual inside.

I'd been craving a massage after the long painful sits in Vipassana (yes, craving - I know enough to name it, but I indulged myself anyways). They were offering them next door at quite a low rate, and the quality was consistent. But good enough! We returned home for a simple meal, mediated, then went to watch a movie at the cinema, deciding that Ford vs Ferrari was the most appropriate option available.

I should fast-forward a little. The next day, after extended farewells, I ran some errands in Pune (experiencing and overcoming the standard litany of logistical challenges), walked past the Osho compound itself with its red-robed foreign acolytes and forbidding perimeter walls, and took my overnight bus straight to Palolem beach, heading directly to Kashish Yoga on arrival to reunite with my wife after two weeks apart!

Lindsay and I spent a weekend together at Patnem beach, walking-distance south of its more popular neighbor. Great eating, swimming, shopping and catching up. I joined her for two days at her Yoga teacher training all-inclusive (reading her copy of Little Fires poolside while she was busy in classes), then one night beachfront (where we returned a few days later - the second weekend), then left for two nights at the Tribe eco-resort a few km north of town.

Here we'll slow down again, because Tribe really captured my interest during my too-short stay. It's a fledgling project, just beginning to become a sustainable business. But they've been in the business of sustainability for a few years now, organizing beach cleans and dog spaying/neutering, creating a wildlife sanctuary and reintroducing biodiversity into an ex-cashew plantation. The main dorm is an open-air raised wooden platform beneath a thatched roof, with impressively effective bug nets cocooning the single mattresses. Private living spaces are simply shacks of varying sizes spread throughout the property, with reclaimed fabric curtains and short ladders.

There's a feeling of immersion, being well removed from the beaten path by distance and dirt roads, as well as a different mentality - not to *take* enjoyment from the natural wonders of the Goan landscape, but to *give* it the richness back after decades of exploitation.

There's also community, with volunteers coming to stay for months at a time to build, restore, and support. One couple from Quebec offered yoga and a Cacao ceremony during my short stay. Everyone shares what they have. It felt good to offer my Ambigrams and I Ching readings to the folks, and then, the morning I left, a formal Acro lesson - my first ever!

This Acro class deserves an explanation. Lindsay had volunteered me to teach her classmates some moves, and it was important to me to do it right. These are full-fledged 500-hour teachers, almost, after all! I planned a flow that would be accessible to beginners, but included some challenges for any who could master the basics. I strategized how to introduce concepts in a sequence that was logical and safe... And then I fretted some more! Wouldn't it make sense to practice teaching the class? I went round after breakfast on Saturday morning to advertise my offering... The time came, and so did the people! They listened, they tried the things. They gave each other insightful feedback and good spotting. Nobody got hurt and folks seemed to be having fun. I'd say it went pretty well!

Later that afternoon, the embodiment professionals were a touch more prudent, conscious of their comfort boundaries, learning lots and having fun, but feeling more secure with me basing or spotting and guiding through the trickier moves. Also a good class, just a bit more 'me' centered. This does wonders for my ego.

One more low-key weekend at the beach, with plenty of sun and sand and sea, tasty treats and resort-like treatment at our small hostel, then a strange jilted week ahead. I thought I might catch Carnivale in one of the four major cities it's in by overnighting in Margao on Monday. Unfortunately, it quickly became clear that the parade had passed through prior to my arrival, and had already moved north. So instead today I am on the train to Hampi, the not-so ancient capital of the Vijayanagar Empire, now an extensive city of ruins. They say one can spend months there fully taking in the majesty. I'll be racing through in a day and a half. Luckily the travel, though long, is relaxed. Soon we'll say long to the South of India and the heavy heat. We've begun to book our stays in the mountains... So stay tuned for the next adventures!

Author’s Note : Truthfully I was in the middle of writing another request from a dear friend but after watching Ford vs. Ferrari (Le Mans ‘66) my Balehead fever returned and I couldn’t stop thinking about Russell Baze, Bale’s character from ‘Out of the Furnace’. And I couldn’t rest until I wrote this story. So, any Balehead out there...hope you enjoy!

The sound of the faulty engine made your eyebrows furrow with concern. All the sudden you couldn’t help but start panicking.

“No no no...” you muttered to yourself while keeping your hands on the steering wheel. No matter how much pressure you applied on the accelerator, all the car did was slow down until it came to a stop. 

The road was deserted, yet you could feel the neighborhood watching you. Accidentally stopping in the middle of the road when you were on the way to get groceries; This certainly was not the best way to spend your first day in this town in Pittsburgh.

Was this bad luck sending you hints? You wondered. Was moving here a huge mistake? It should not be. Should it be a mistake to contribute to a hospital that lacked helping hands?

With a heavy sigh, you put your forehead on the steering wheel. Closing ones eyes, you hoped to not catch any glimpse of anyone witnessing your shame.

“Excuse me...Ma’am?”

A deep but gentle voice inquired from outside the half opened car window.

“Yes?” With a voice that was muffled, you answered. You saw nothing but darkness for your eyes were still closed ,unmoved from your previous position.

“Uh...is there something...wrong with your car?” The voice kept inquiring.

Embarrassed at your own embarrassing behavior, you let out another heavy sigh before finally sitting up to face the ‘inquiring’ man.

Except the embarrassment left your body without a single trace by the mere sight of him. 

The man certainly was not what you expected to see. Long, brunette locks framing his face, with accentuated high cheekbones, he had a matching mustache and goatee.

Truthfully, he was nothing but appealing to you. But none of that drew your attention to him more than his eyes did.

Hazel in color, they looked kind. The type of kindness that has seen the pain in the world, yet choosing to be kind regardless. Cause that was who he was. At least what you thought he was.

Your wide eyes and silent wonder may have worried him, for he backed up, slowly raising both his hands up in defense.

“I’m sorry...” he said softly, with a nervous smile, “I’ll be out of your hair-”

“Wait! I...Ah!-”

You wanted to stop him. But your impatience led to your downfall when you burst out of your car, only to trip and literally fall down.

But he was quick enough, catching you in his arms.

You were safe in his arms, though it was just for a few seconds. The cotton flannel shirt he wore, felt soothing against your body. And the way he held you with such an innocent gaze, you were far from intimidated. So much so your panting helped stealthily catch a whiff of his musk; The type that made your cheeks burn as his face was merely inches away from yours.

“Ahh...I’m really sorry” you breathed, later worrying about your breath falling on his face. He shook his head gracefully. “Nawww...” he said, as you quickly stood up, “...it’s alright...”

“Actually, something is wrong with the car” you admitted, “it suddenly just stopped...”

“Is that right?” He asked, to which you nodded. Taking a peak at the front of the car, he walked towards it, “Mind if I take a look?”

“Of course, please” you could only answer with such eagerness.

Though it was not his, he familiarized himself with the vehicle so easily. Opening up the hood, he began to investigate while you watched with arms folded.

“Is this a rental?”

“Uh huh”

“Hmm...makes sense” He did not mean it ironically. Not at all. In fact, he sounded genuinely concerned.

Before you even could think, this intriguing stranger became a Good Samaritan. Moving so swiftly, from grabbing tools from his truck, and coming over, he made an attempt to fix the engine.

Quiet, that was he was while he worked. And that comforted you. He did not go out of his way to make any unnecessary small talk. Truthfully, the silence made it easier for you to watch him with sheer admiration. To admire the tattoos that were exposed on his neck and arms, to admire the way the sunlight shone over his head. People had started to fill in the neighborhood, but all you could see was him. 

“You’re one lucky lady...”

He smiled, wiping the grease off his hands with a cloth a few minutes later. Your eyes grew bright.

“Is it-”

“Yes Ma’am”

Relief came over you in the form of a huge wave upon hearing this good news. And just like that, your worst day failed to keep it’s promise.

“Oh...Thank you so much”

You cried out, clasping your hands. The man merely smiled with shyness.   Quickly grabbing his bag, he nodded  in acknowledgment as he slowly joined the group of men that passed him by. The group of men that headed over to the steel mills that proudly stood a few miles ahead.

You couldn’t wait to share this story with someone. For it was a real life angel in disguise who stepped up for your aid, someone who stirred your heart after possibly ages. Getting into the car, you already imagined yourself sharing it. Until you covered your face with your palm, groaning in sheer frustration.

That was the excuse you kept giving yourself. Whenever you had the urge to ask around about him, you gave yourself that excuse to push it away. Your foolish pride made you fear of the judgement of others. Besides, there was not many people you knew there.

However, you couldn’t stop thinking about him. Throughout the entire weekend those kind eyes resided in your thoughts, never leaving you alone.

Desperation came to a point you would take casual strolls around town, hoping to catch a glimpse of him or bump into him by a happy accident. But life wasn’t so kind.

“More coffee for you, honey?”

Verona, the old waitress asked you as she stood by your table. Monday had dawned, and all you craved for was a diner breakfast for some reason.

“Yes...please” chuckling, you nodded indicating the empty mug right beside your plate of bacon and waffles, “It’s my first day at work...”  you added, watching her refill “...so got a long one comin’”

“At the hospital? I bet” the woman said, “Oh god! Russell! Where you been hiding?” 

Turning to her left, she called out to a figure who just entered the diner. Curious, you leaned to your left to catch a glimpse of this mysterious figure. Except he was not mysterious. It didn’t take long for you to recognize those brunette locks, that facial hair, those cheekbones, that smile.

Those kind eyes.

To your relief, those eyes widened with surprise upon seeing you, urging him to walk over to your booth with haste.

Euphoric, you felt euphoric. Suddenly, a long work shift didn’t seem so difficult. You felt like you received all the energy that you required for the entire week ahead.

Standing there with his hands in his pockets, the man flashed a warm smile, clearing forgetting Verona who stood next to you.

“Small world...” he said. Rich yet gentle, his voice was akin to honey. “Yeah well...small town heheh...” You replied, encouraging him to chuckle alongside you.

“Russell...you know this young lady?” Verona asked, with surprised look.

“Well I-”

“He helped me...” you interrupted excitedly, “...with my car” you added shyly. He shook his head innocently. “Naww...it was nothing...”

“Maybe...but still...thank you again” you said, with impatience and certainty, placing the cutlery on the plate. Your eyes were filled with gratitude, hoping he could read it. His own eyes blinked in acknowledgment, as you both recalled that fateful encounter in silence.

“You eating alone?” He asked, to which you nodded.

“Yeah...are you?”

“YES! Yes he is...”Verona cried out excitedly, pushing the man over to your booth, “....go on, grab a seat now, you” she insisted, making the two of you chuckle once again “...you want the usual? Of course you do” And before he could even respond, Verona left with a skip in her step.

“I’m Russell...by the way...”

Kind eyes took a good look at yours, while slowly sitting across from you.

“Y/N...” You pointed at yourself, stifling a smile but failing in the end. His movements were graceful as ever, running his fingers through his hair to brush them back. And just like you, he could not stop smiling.

“So Y/N...new in town, huh?”

Nodding, you took a sip of your coffee with that same smile, anticipating nothing but good as the conversation began. A conversation you longed to have throughout the weekend.
