some thoughts about astarion because i'm tired of the internet reducing him to one thing

when bg3 came out in early access, astarion was always seen as the extremely flirty, confident guy who enjoyed sex (or so we thought) and spoke about it like it was his favourite thing. he was also kinda marketed as the “sexy vampire”, so you can understand why many people saw him that way based on the little amount of content we had. even while playing act 1 and act 2, many players still might think of him like that because he does have a very charismatic personality and he asks to sleep with you very early on, so it just automatically makes you think he’s genuinely happy doing that and being totally serious.

BUT!!!!!!! we end up finding out later on that’s NOT the case and it was all part of a plan to seduce us in order for him to gain protection. he opens up about his past and his trauma and how he was forced to use his body to lure people back to cazador. he struggles with intimacy and relationships in general because of this. that’s why i really hope that people stop reducing him to “hot sexy vampire that loves flirting and having sex with everyone” when that is not who he is, he’s literally traumatised because of sex due to being forced into it and he’s slowly trying to heal. he’s also so much more than just “the hot vampire”, ya know? if you actually put in the effort to get to know him, you will see who he truly is underneath and he has many loveable traits to appreciate.

you may not see the “soft” side of him very often because he hides it, but it’s there!! one thing i noticed that really stood out to me was that when i gave food to an orphan in act 3 and he approved. back when you first met him, he probably would’ve done the opposite or had no reaction at all. i also saw a clip of someone trying to romance karlach and astarion and he literally told tav to choose karlach over him because he can see that karlach loves her. he said normally an arrangement would work for him but after everything karlach has been through, he doesn’t want to get in the way or see her hurt. letting tav go is also hard for him as well but he still thought about someone else. he could’ve whined or been possessive or jealous but he didn’t do that at all. where are all those people who reduce astarion to “the guy that flirts and sleeps with everyone” now? seriously. that’s not what he does, and when he was forced into it by cazador, he was trying to survive, he didn’t do it for his own pleasure. it’s not a “hot” personality trait of his, it’s literally trauma. and because he did it so much, he got used to it, and that resulted in him disassociating and feeling empty.

apparently if you ask him to join you and sleep with the drows at the brothel (something i will never make him do in my playthroughs), he only says yes because he struggles to say no. but he disassociates. and if you’re in a high approval relationship with him and he loves you, he will feel safe enough to express his feelings and say he’s not comfortable. this happens before you fight cazador. i’m not sure if he gives the same response after, but either way, if he joins in, he will always disassociate and it’s not something he wants to do despite what he may say.

that being said, it’s obviously still okay to appreciate his beauty and attractiveness, because he is very beautiful. he appreciates it and even likes being called beautiful. calling him “hot” and “sexy” isn’t a bad thing either, we know he can be and i'm sure he knows it too! it’s just annoying when people act like that’s ALL he is and they don’t even mention anything else about his character. the love scenes are beautifully done too (i personally prefer the second one after you’ve stopped him from doing the ritual, because that’s the one where he decided he truly wanted it and felt safe and comfortable because he genuinely loves you), and i actually would’ve been fine if they didn’t have any scenes like that at all because it’s totally understandable and valid if he didn’t feel comfortable, but i just hope that people don’t take things too far and over-sexualise him just because of how he appeared to be in the first half of the game and the way he’s often marketed on social media. and yes i know he’s fictional and nothing on the internet is going to hurt his feelings!!!! it’s more about the fact that he canonically has sexual trauma and many people still say really disturbing stuff even AFTER they find out about that, and it just makes me uncomfortable to think that people are okay with treating someone like a sexual object especially when they've said they're traumatised and it makes them uncomfortable. idk if this makes sense 😭

but yeah he doesn't want to flirt and sleep with everyone as i've seen people claim. and if in an alternate universe he did, and he did it on his OWN terms, and the other people he had relationships with enjoyed it too, then good for them! absolutely nothing wrong with that if there's consent, respect and honesty. however, that's not the case with what happened with astarion, because 1. he was forced into using his body WHEN HE DID NOT WANT TO and 2. he misled people and lured them to a miserable fate. it's so horrible and devastating for everyone involved. sex was never something fun for him, and it certainly isn't a "personality trait" of his. it was a survival tactic. he was forced to. he didn’t want to.

obviously when he becomes more comfortable, then it's totally understandable to get excited when he flirts and shows physical affection. he can be so charming, funny, sweet and romantic and i love that. it’s so beautiful to see him heal, genuinely find comfort in someone for the first time and experience intimacy that he feels ready and comfortable for. he deserves to love and be loved on his own terms instead of being forced. but again, he is so much more than the guy we were introduced to at the beginning. the internet just sees one thing and sticks with it but i really hope people start to actually appreciate him for who he is and the complexity of his character.

Fiona and Cake spoilers seriously

(Something I noticed abt Betty and Simons relationship)

I love Betty and Simon’s relationship, I think their back story is so cute and romantic and all that lovely stuff don’t get me wrong.

But there’s this under tone of Betty constantly giving things up for Simon and we don’t really talk about it a lot???

Like, Betty let Simon have his moment with the artifact and the pubic, she also doesn’t go to her trip in favor of going on an expedition with Simon. Then when she goes to leave again she stays for Simon.

Even Fiona is like “you went with her on the bus?” And Simon just looks all confused like “what? No, why would I do that?” Like- hello???

Then after that she gave up her entire life and mind to get Simon back to the point where she literally says “I don’t know who I am without him anymore.” And that just sucks! Since the beginning Betty has been the one giving up the most, her mind, her own possible career, and it’s a story of love of course and it’s very sweet but it’s also a story of sacrifice.

Their love wasn’t a perfect solution, it was already sort of imbalanced when it started and I lowkey love how we see those cracks even before they’re together.

Again, I love their relationship and I think it’s sweet. I just think we should talk about Betty’s side more, especially when she tells a story of what most women do in relationships, sacrifice.

They seem to hate her primarily because she’s an incredibly significant person in karna’s life as a servant who has the audacity to be ‘conventionally unattractive’ (a bit fat) and kind of annoying- at least a few of these people are quite fixated on karna and consider her a sort of ‘dead weight’ that hinders either him personally or their enjoyment of his character

Which is incredibly ironic because jinako is specifically and explicitly the master who’s had the greatest positive impact on karna as a servant in part because of her own ‘flaws.’ The fact that she was a poor suit for him in terms of will to fight and magical output meant that he was forced to, for once, cool his heels and actually reflect on the events and people around him instead of focusing solely on fighting like in apocrypha or even fgo to some extent. He was forced to also reflect on his own tendencies by sitting and waiting and gained a level of peace with himself he was able to carry into later installments. It was a period of time he clearly felt fondly about with all the times he’s referenced it and to act like she did him a disservice by not let him explosionize things is just wrong- while that may be what he likes to do, he was able to recognize that it isn’t always what he needs and while it was unintentional on her part he deeply appreciates how she helped him realize it.

The simple fact is that their story arc in ccc culminated in him telling her that even if she never changed from the ‘cowardly nobody’ she felt she was, he was sure someone would still be out there waiting to meet her- a message he delivered with as much clarity and compassion as he could muster. It’s the exact antithesis of the people who resent her for those traits lmao. To ignore all that and treat her as a metaphorical shackle around his neck rather than someone who was actively responsible for making him able to relax more as a servant and enjoy himself is actively incorrect even if you resent the fact she’s a woman with an important relationship (whether romantic or platonic is irrelevant tbh) to your favorite anime boy

As for the people who primarily hate her bc she’s fat….uh…get better taste? 🤷

I have said this before but me being self proclaimed number 1 Ryoma fan and that being possibly literal-bc even if this bro had fans before me I might’ve simply done the most for him by talking about him so much + being the first to write fics that are in depth studies on his trauma across canons-I gotta say if there’s one other character I rotate a lot that isn’t him it’s probably Kei. (Shocking it’s not Hayato even if I do think about him too- but it’s usually associated with Ryoma bc gays 🗿)

I’m not even exaggerating when I say Kei would be my favorite and only isn’t because she doesn’t exist in many other canons yet my brain rotates the endless possibilities of how to incorporate her. I’ve already written a fic where she’s in shin vs neo verse which worked surprisingly well but I’ve been thinking how universally she could appear in other things. (Whether it be fitting her into a idea of a possible Go team in New or just a new canon completely) I think what I’ve narrow it down to is that she could be like- in Michirus role? Like she’s the supporting female who isn’t a pilot but helps out the real occasionally which I think would align very well especially with the original manga role she has of being Hayato’s assistant. And even if Hayato isn’t grandpa mode yet he still very much is in Saotomes position at that point. Not sure if she’d Hayato’s biological kid to further parallel Saotome and Michiru given well Hayato already adopts the Go team and his wife is irrelevant LOL.

I have no idea if I’ll ever write this specific idea but I’m still- rotating it cause this is such a easy way to get around “picking between Sho or Kei as the 2nd pilot” since both of them can still exist even if one doesn’t get to pilot, idm my supporting females. Looking back, watching Aquamarine really molded me as a person like, one of the actual healthiest relationships portrayed in tween movies like, sure they’re cringe like teens are supposed to be but they’re fun and learn about the power of platonic love and the importance of friendship regardless of the obstacles between you and the romantic relationship is actually age appropriate and not to romanticize the past bc things have certainly changed since but when tween movies get replaced by clearly adult shows with toxic relationships it really feels like a loss for the younger generation and idk it’s just that Aquamarine taught me that there’s nothing wrong with having a romantic relationship while there’s also nothing wrong with just deciding to focus on your friendships and made me feel very comfortable with the fact that I wasn’t really ready for a relationship when I was so young still, everyone matures at a different rate in their lives but for me it just feels right to cultivate my friendships instead of focusing on finding romantic relationships, I’m still learning about myself and growing and making friends and hanging out and having fun and I feel like I can be happy whether I enter a romantic relationship at some point or not because romantic love isn’t the end all be all of my life and while these are just my thoughts over several years I do believe that Aquamarine was the first time I saw that platonic love is just as important if not more so than romantic love and it became a core memory essentially, you can be fun, pretty, nice, cringy, awkward, silly, like jewelry, heels, makeup, bike rides, reading, shopping and all the stereotypical girly stuff but that doesn’t mean you’re a shallow person or can’t have meaningful friendships/relationships with others, it’s just, Aquamarine had days to find love before her father would drag her back to the ocean and the girls that find her and decide to help her and they all spent the movie setting up dates for her with this cute guy that likes Aquamarine back yet when the time comes it’s actually the girls that save her because they’ve genuinely come to love her as their friend and I just think that’s a really beautiful thing to portray in a movie aimed towards teens when most of the teen movies tend to focus on romantic relationships

#it’s just that the beauty of platonic relationships between friends who genuinely love each other got to me okay #plus the girls know all of Aquamarine from the beginning #they know her secret #they find her when she’s a mermaid #they introduce her to human customs #they set her up with their own mutual crush #also the bare minimum was like that the guy wasn’t interested in the girls at all since they were teens and he was older #pretty realistic (at least for me personally) and it makes the movie hold up #like compare that to freaky Friday where the guy wasn’t even a student???? the stark difference of how Alicent is portrayed as a mother and as a person and how Rhaenyra is portrayed…very interesting to see and it really brings home just how much her father has impacted her and fucked her up—and how much she’s changed.

Alicent forces all of her anxieties and worries onto her children and she doesn’t seem to be very invested in them—she seems rather bored around Helaena and her bugs and Aegon doesn’t seem like he wants to be king, but Alicent wants to instil in them the same mistrust she has to Rhaenyra and, even though Rhaenyra offers her an olive branch, she refuses it. Alicent doesn’t want peace in the family, she doesn’t care about the things she insists that Rhaenyra doesn’t care about. She wants her son to be king, because she still trusts what her father told her all those years ago, that fear that he instilled in her, despite the fact that we’ve seen nothing from Rhaenyra that would make us thinks she would ever harm her brothers and sister.

I have no doubt that Alicent once loved Rhaenyra very much, we’ve seen it. but Alicent’s paranoia and mistrust of her—and her blind trust in her father—is going to start a war, and end in the deaths of thousands and the deaths of all of her children and grandchildren. It isn't going to be Rhaenyra that starts a war—it's Alicent.

Okay but are dating apps hard for everyone to use? I literally have to sit and agonize over swiping right on someone for days. I gotta mentally map out every potential conversation and subsistent 50 years of marriage I could have with the stranger based on the allotted paragraph bio.

You ever just see the worst lovesquare takes and you know it’s not worth it to get involved and it’s not like it’s even salt but man we have been watching totally different shows
