when it comes to trans dragons I literally don't know where to start because I just assign genders to these things based on vibes alone and like half of them end up nonbinary, but I present you with these 6 Beasts because their strong transgender power stood out to me as I scoured through my lair.

names + little lore snippets under the cut! content warning for internalized ableism (in regards to a fantasy illness) in the second to last one.

first we have Magdalene! she was a dream dragon for a long time and I was so happy when I finally got her. she was my avatar dragon for a good while. again I decided she was trans based on vibes alone but also the name of her skin is a SOPHIE reference (rest in peace legend ❤️) so like I couldn't not make her trans. she's a minor goddess of life in the most traditional sense. spring and flowers, that type of deal.

then there's Luci(fer) (yes she named herself that. people who hear her full name get confused when they find out that she's not associated with the deviltown demons.) she's a member of the blastpowder bandits and Monty's right hand. she's perceived as the Normalest of the group but that's mostly her inexpressive fae nature working in her favor for once. she loves bombs and explosions just as much as the rest of them, she just prefers making the bombs and then watching other people use them from the sidelines. she enjoys planning and organizing and just generally writing shit down. the type to always walk around with a notebook and pen in her hands like a little nerd.

Odessa... doesn't have much going for her lore-wise right now but she's in a shitty band with Bremen and Sandwaste called "Vengeful Desert Spirits Calling Your Name in the Night" (the like. 3 people who actually enjoy their music simply refer to them as Desert Spirits.) Odessa here plays the drums! in her enthusiasim she has accidentally launched multiple drumsticks at people (mostly Sandwaste.)

Omen is the world's Wettest Most-Depressedest private investigator. jazz noir music inexplicably starts playing when he's around. he has the ability to spontaneously manifest a glass of whiskey in his hand even though he doesn't drink. utterly incapable of solving any case that isn't some convoluted unsolvable 30 year old triple murder cold-case. weird charged energy with every suspect he talks to. permanent face of disinterest and a fucked right knee. a romantic at heart.

Cessair... is a very unhappy dragon. his mother is a very powerful combat mage who wanted a mini-me and someone to pass her knowledge down to. but Cessair couldn't be her daughter, and they couldn't be her successor. around when they were 15 they started showing the first sings of an illness that would end up rendering any attempts to externalize their magic very, very dangerous. he refuses to give up on magic, though. he thinks doing so would cement him as a failure and a disappointment to his family. they see their limitations as a personal failing and a weakness to be overcome, no matter the means or the cost, and leave their home at 19 in search of said means. he deeply craves community and companionship but his self-loathing and general dissatisfaction with his life make him snappy and standoffish. they will, eventually, find their happy ending, and learn not to push themself so far over their limits. but the road to get there will not be easy.

moving on from that downer, our final dragon(??) is:

One. well the guy this thing killed and stole the body of was trans and the shade doesn't really have gender so. diversity win!

To explain the problem with how the Atsv fandom deals with Hobie a lot and sometimes with Gwen too............Hobie and Gwen have certain expectations put on them as a slightly older black character and a female character who's the male mc's love interest.Hobie is expected to be overtly sexual and uncommited to his partners('I hate labels' was him being nonbinary,please be fucking serious)and have a huge mean edge to him or either a caretaker to the Spiderband with no personality and stories of his own and Gwen is expected to be a 'normal' straight girlfriend-Hence all the emphasis put on her being a girl and Miles a boy even when it dosen't fit-including the toxicity frequent in white ones with black boyfriends specifically(that's what 'snowbunny' means btw)and her experiences as a friendless abuse victim who's trans and was kicked out by her cop dad for doing activism isn't something that you can ignore,because GWEN can't ignore it either and neither can Hobie with his own lived antiblackness and adultification that are inherently intertwined with eachother

Gwen wasn't written to be a stereotypical hashtag quirky cis white girl with no real problems besides wanting the guy to like her back,Gwen was CANONICALLY written as a usual TRANS girl and those are absolutely different because i known both closely and she reminds me infinitely more of tgirls who're pastel softgirls for gender validation instead of white woman fragility and the only reason her and Margo weren't a trio with Hobie pre-Miles is the same reason Peter B didn't come with Gwen to visit Miles and it's that writers wanted to isolate them from eachother to emphasize Ghostflower as if they didn't pull it off just fine in the first movie and when the only weak points in the second one are FROM them doing that and if you think about it for 5 seconds you'd realize that Margo and her have every reason to love eachother so much and hang out.And Hobie has plenty of interesting traits and potential even without his comics lore and he never shows interest in sex-Rightfully so,because this is a fucking children's franchise!!!-and any 'vibes' adult Hobie bullshitters got was them being creeps who can't turn off horny mode and you can just say you don't ship Ghostpunk and Punkflower instead of making a fool of yourself by denying how much mutual romantic interest and chemistry Hobie has with Gwen and Miles

And y'all WILDIN' if you actually think Hobie's Team Dad status to the Spiderband is something that takes zero toll on him but i know for a fact it eventually does and he tries to hide it because he feels guilty but they find out and let him breakdown and take care of him too starting from then on because he's not their ACTUAL Dad,he's a 17 year old and he's their best friend and that's what best friends DO.Gwen ain't a pick me either,she's a trans legend who didn't magically turn cis when she started passing contrary to how y'all think transfemininity work and Hobie didn't 'adopt' her,him taking her in was intersectionality and solidarity between black people and trans women which has an extremely important history in punk culture and deadass one of the first thing's i learned when i started my research after i decided to go pastel punk.You all look dumb as hell with these janky ass takes,especially those random hate comments i'm always seeing on Hobie x Spiderband posts and the defenses towards the cisfeminization of Gwen and don't even get me started on the Switfie allegations as if Hobie isn't obviously a The Cure fan and Gwen a Tv Girl one,and if you want minority characters to be written offensively with no depth so bad,go back to watching Danny Phantom and Miraculous Ladybug and leave Hobs and Gwendy tf alone!!!!!

*Chris Bradford is trans. )(e did a full transition, he did hormones, voice training, top and bottom surgery, a few different surgeries to make him look/feel more masculine, all the bells and whistles, even went the extra mile to do procedures to hide his surgery scars. )(e's closeted and does about everything in his power to make sure no one even question that he was assigned female at birth because he's scared of his social image of being the great macho man, Chris Bradford, crumbling.

*Leo mainly or solely uses fandom and fanfic socials like Wattpad, AO3, Amino, Tumblr, and maybe Twitter. She mainly interacts with Space )(eroes and Crognard The Barbarian fan posts and shows a special interest in gender swap aus.

*Later on, post show with Muckman's help the mutants are actually able to freely walk around humans without them completely flipping out and starting a mob to witch hunt after them.

*Speaking of walking around humans, Napoleon and the frogs down in Louisiana are considered local urban legend and humans get really excited when they spot the frogs in the woods.

*Dr. Rockwell is a very big coffee enjoyer and used to secretly steal coffee from the nearby shops around the mighty mutanimals hideout and on the rare occasion when someone caught him and called him out he would always use the excuse of the shops being owned by big corporations.

*Don Visioso is a deadbeat father of 5. )(e also has had multiple wives and many divorces.

*Mondo Gecko will call people posers if he's jealous enough of them.

*Ivan Steranko is also trans but has only had hrt and face masculinizing surgery and refuses to get top and bottom surgery.

*Anton Zeck is incredibly smart and performed extremely well in high school and even got free scholarships for how well he did.

*Shinigami is a big video game nerd and will geek out if anyone mentions one of the games she plays.

*The reason Anton hated the mutant name Mikey gave him at first is because it either sounds a lot like or straight up is a nickname old bullies of him gave in order to make fun of him.

*Premutation, Chris acts transphobic towards Xever (despite Xever being cis) out of jealousy and insecurity.

*Baxter Stockman is either a gay aroace trans mspec nonbinary man or a cishet ally. No in-between.

*Mini April cluster!!!:

*April has a deep love for literature and writes poetry in her spare time.

*She almost burned down the culinary class in her school once.

*She's questioning aroace.

*She felt extra empathy for Muckman because he reminded her of Kirby a little bit.

*She likes to hide stickers around the lair whenever has them on her person.

*She thoroughly enjoys having long conversations with each of the individual turtles. (It's her favorite way to spend time with anyone tbh)

*April does eventually take some time to properly learn Japanese and becomes pretty decent at speaking and reading it.

*)(er and Donnie often like to geek out together whenever they find anything new about aliens (both species they haven't seen yet and ones they know well like the kraang).

*Kirby O'Neil is a pretty decent cook. That man can make a mean chicken stew.

*Shinigami actually owns multiple cats. 2 ragdoll, 1 sphinx, 1 Persian, and 3 British shorthairs (I could name them all, but I don't wanna). Also, the majority of them are black cats. She feeds strays, too.

*The last headcanon is much to Karai's dismay because she is somewhat allergic. She gets headaches, her skin gets slightly irritated and she gets the sniffles if she's around cats for too long.

*Casey's younger sister wants to be a hair stylist when she grows up, so Jones let's her do his hair every once in a while and he flexes it to every one at the lair like: "Oh? My hair? Yeah, my sister did it for me. Pretty metal, what she did with it, right?"

*Tigerclaw is the only Foot Clan member to not bully Baxter Stockman.

*Someone manipulated and lied to Alopex in order to make her hate and hunt down her brother.

*After season 4, Baxter Stockman leaves New York and takes over Stockman Industries. (If you're unaware of what that is, it's on billboards that the turtles pass throughout the show the most notable appearance being in the ending scene of the final season 4 episode, 'Owari'.)

*Slash deep down still misses The Newtralizer.

*Leatherhead kind of freaks out (apologies for the bad wording) when someone fully wraps their arms around his neck when hugging him because it reminds him of the restraints the Kraang put him in.

*Pigeon Pete learns how to bake so he can make his own bread.

*The turtles get a Wii (or whatever the universes equivalent is).

*Mondo Gecko gets an old Xbox and plays Tony )(awk games, Bully, and Twisted Metal on it.

*Ivan and Anton actually move out to New Jersey post show.

"Alright, the steps are simple." Sidon cued the director, who tapped his baton.

As the music started, he put his hands into position on your waist and hand. You followed suit, grasping his hand and putting your hand on top of his arm due to his height.

How did you end up dancing with the Zora Prince? Well, you had always wanted to dance, but the instructions never felt clear. That being said, Sidon took it upon himself to being your teacher, especially after you asked if he knew how to dance. He wouldn't dare miss up a chance to give his assistance.

"One two three, one two three." The music was slow, and Sidon's steps were clear after he gave the instructions. Move your foot like so, one. Step down, two. Move your body. Three. Going this speed, it wasn't so bad. You could actually move with some semblance of grace. "Yes! Wonderful! You're doing amazing!"

Sidon's praise made your cheeks a rosy pink, a shy smile growing on your face. "I-It's still slow. This really isn't much."

"Shall we go faster?"

"W-Wait--"

Sidon raised a hand, signaling the director to pick up the speed. With increased tempo came increased movements.

"One two three, one two three."

"O-One two three, one t-two three."

You tried keeping up with Sidon, the slight increase of speed already messing with your stepping. Your legs became tangled, and while trying to fix it, you stepped on Sidon's feet.

"G-Gh!"

Panicked, you stumbled back, hands over your mouth. "I-I'm so sorry, your highness!"

Chuckling, Sidon hopped on his good foot for a moment, lifting the stomped one to gently rub at the spot. "N-No worries, friend! It all comes with learning!"

A sense of guilt began to wash over you. Was this a bad idea? Did Sidon think you were too clumsy at this point to learn? After all, you barely just now got the slow steps down. How were you supposed move faster after just learning that?

"Shall we try again?"

...Should you? You nervously rubbed your arm, shyly looking away. "I-I think...maybe this was a stupid idea..." You took a step away from him as he approached you with an equal step.

Sidon's face fell into a look of hurt. He was hurt by your words, but not on his behalf. It was more like a worry for you. You had merely asked for assistance, and the way you were changing your mind startled him. He motioned for the band and director to take a break, telling them that he'll come and get him when they were ready. As they did, you found a seat on a large, nearby rock, facing away from the prince. You sat there alone for some time until Sidon sat beside you on the ground.

"...You want to know something?" he asked softly. "When I was learning how to dance, I stepped all over my sister's fins"

You kept your gaze ahead, but you listened.

"Yes I was much shorter than her, yet I insisted on learning the proper way. Such an inistance led to her poor feet being covered in little bruises from me stepping on her. She offered to hold me and take me through the motions, but I told her I wanted to learn properly."

You wondered why he was telling you this. At the moment, it just wasn't clicking in your head.

Sidon looked over at you, giving you one of his comforting smiles. "What I'm saying is, no one is going to get things right away. There will be trials, there will be hardships, even with something as simple as dancing."

You started to understand, sighing out and rubbing the back of your head sheepishly. "I-I just...I don't want you to see me as some klutz...I want to seem elegant to you, match the energy you have..."

"Oh, my dear. I am far from what elegance you think I have." Sidon let out a chuckle, gently rubbing your back for reassurance. "Trust me, I often wish the same from my father, to be as elegant and dignified as him. I still work on it everyday."

Sidon? In a similar position as you? It felt impossible but...well...it did feel reassuring to not be alone. And he was right, these things take time after all.

"So...Shall we work on our steps again?" Sidon asked with a more signature grin of his, holding out his hand.

You gazed at the extended limb, sighing out with a small smile.

"Y-Yeah. Let's try again."

I’m still thinking about dumb discourse because my brain is broken and guys there’s so much “Ed and Stede are not as queer as Izzy” out there what the heck.

Anyway. I said this in response to a different post:

There are so many ways to be queer and so many kinds of queer experiences. Not everyone is going to see themselves in Ed or Stede, and that's fine. Some people are going to see themselves in Izzy, and that's also fine. What's not fine is asserting that your pet white guy (who, yes, conforms to pirate standards of masculinity better than anyone else on the Revenge) is the only character with a valid queer arc.

But why do some Izzy fans (can we call them Izzy Heads? Izheads? I want a word for that specific flavor of fan) relate only to the queerness in Izzy's story? I can't stop thinking about it.

It seems that at least some people who consider Izzy the best example of queer rep in OFMD do so because they relate to the character. They don’t have a romantic partner or they’re in love with someone who doesn’t feel the same way. They’re disabled and focus on the intersection of disability and queerness. They feel as though they’re outsiders, even in a queer community (or a largely queer fandom like this one). They’re not cis men and they’re not trans in the same way as Jim is, so they don’t see their gender explicitly represented onscreen.

On paper, most of that describes me too. The thing is? I do relate to Stede and Ed and I don’t relate to Izzy at all.

I’m an AFAB nonbinary person who’s physically and mentally disabled. I’m aromantic and asexual with the sliders all set to 100%; I have never so much as dated, and I almost never engage with romantic media because I just don’t get it. I feel like a freak in most circles, like I’m missing a fundamental part of what makes humans human. There isn’t a character in OFMD who shares my specific gender or sexual identity, but Ed and Stede are absolutely queer in ways that are understandable to me and, I think, a lot of other people in this community.

Ed and Stede both grow up and live the first decades of their adult lives in societies that don’t want them to be themselves. Stede can’t love flowers or bright and flashy fashion; he needs to dress down and become a family man. He’s forced to marry a woman he doesn’t love (and who doesn’t love him) and father children to inherit his wealth. Ed can’t fancy a fine fabric or pursue a peaceful life because his world is one that demands cruelty and violence. He has to wrap himself up in leather and layers of myth and legend to survive. They’re both GNC and wearing masks and entirely miserable.

I know -- I think most of us know -- what it’s like to suppress who we are so we can fit in or be who the people around us expect us to be. I think we know what it’s like to be miserable and lonely for ages -- to bury who we really are deeper and deeper until we barely remember who that person is -- right up until we find out that there are people out there who get us. There are places where we can be who we are, or at least experiment a bit and discover ourselves.

Even if we don’t know what it’s like to find a great love like Stede and Ed do, there are parts of their relationship that we understand. I'm sure plenty of us know what it’s like to meet someone who doesn’t ask us to pretend for the first time. We know what it’s like to be on the same silly, stupid wavelength as someone else, and we know how it feels to play with someone who gets us. I think that the friendship that Ed and Stede share, even with the romantic and sexual elements removed, is a distinctly queer one.

So I guess I still don't know why Izheads only relate to his queer experience when Ed and Stede, in my opinion, are both extremely queer even beyond, like, the thing where they're wildly in love.

I want to think it has something to do with Izzy's status as a side character and not racism, internalized homophobia, or anything else like that. Characters without fully fleshed-out backgrounds provide opportunities to project whatever we want, you know? If you want to see your specific gender or sexual identity in a character, just grab one with little canon lore and fill in the blanks. hi!! 💖 i only started the game a few days ago and it was an impulse decision i made after having previously told a friend of mine that i definitely wanted to play it but that it'd probably take me a while to get around to it (and, because i thought i wouldn't play anytime soon i hadn't really been trying to avoid spoilers). but, i have the PC version and while it generally runs just fine, my computer is kind of slow and the game is so big that it took hours to download and install. so i kind of went ahead and started to come up with a whole character idea during that time LOL. sorry if my explanations of things get a bit too rambly/disorganized. i'm actually not very far in the game at all yet, i've been spending a ton of time doing stuff in the druids grove and i'm supposed to go find halsin but i haven't even gotten karlach in my party yet! i've recruited all the main companions except for her but i am excited to meet her. gonna put the rest of this under a cut for length.

my only background with DND is that i listened to the first campaign of the adventure zone and i've watched the legends of vox machina show. i also have a friend who's super into her own DND campaign and another friend who's told me a lot about dimension 20, specifically fantasy high--and i've considered trying it out for her but haven't gotten around to it yet! i think she actually told me the same thing about the episode lengths making it easier to get into than critical role, because i had tried critical role and it was just so long that i couldn't stick with it. but, yeah, i've also looked at the forgotten realms wiki a bit but i've never actually played DND. i have played skyrim and final fantasy 14 and some other similar RPGs with customizable blank-slate protagonists, and in those types of games i always have to make OCs to roleplay as--usually i'll think up a basic idea to start with and then flesh the character out as i get into the game. they're never really self-inserts but i do often project onto them a little.

so, in games like these my first character is usually an elf that specializes in elemental/destructive magic. idk why, that's just what i've always liked. in ff14 i started out as a black mage without knowing it was the hardest class to play LMAO. soooo i went into this planning to create a high elf sorcerer, but as i started writing out ideas and thinking about what to do, i ended up creating a half-high elf bard. they're transmasc/nonbinary and in my head they use he/they pronouns, but i picked the nb option in the character creator and that causes npcs to actually use they/them in dialogue which i think is so cool. i love that the character creator is so inclusive in regards to gender.

anyway, i named them elenion, which is something i took from the lord of the rings universe because i'm a huge nerd. in LOTR it's an elvish word that basically means "of the stars". here's a couple screenshots i took when i first started. let's just ignore the fact that this hairstyle clips into elf ears (and also that the face preset is from a mod i downloaded).

i didn't really give him a tragic backstory or even the most interesting story haha--i'm wanting to do something bigger and angstier with another character on a second playthrough when i'm more familiar with the lore and world of the game. and i'll probably also end up changing or expanding on some things about this character later, but for now i just kind of made a normal guy with normal problems. i had this idea that his father, a human who attracted the attention of a beautiful elf woman, was also a bard and was a very successful musician in his youth. so elenion has always shared his father's passion and dreamed of being like him, being able to effortlessly tell incredible tales and inspire crowds of people through song, but no matter how much he studies and practices he never feels good enough. if he seems confident it's usually just because he's gotten really good at faking it. he's also pretty reserved and often avoids having to talk about himself by asking a lot of questions. see, i kind of wanted to specifically find a way to not roleplay the usual sort of loud, flirty, goofy bard, lol. not that i dislike those kinds of characters or anything though!

however, bards are meant to be super charismatic, witty, and persuasive and of course the game strongly encourages that with the dialogue options and skill bonuses you get. so my way of explaining this is to have elenion be a bit like raine from the owl house, in that they may be shy, but they're very firm in their ideals and are no pushover when it comes to protecting themself or their allies. they're clever and have a snarky side to them, and they're genuinely friendly and caring in a way that gives them a sense of quiet charisma. which reminds me that one of the spells i gave them at the start was sleep, and it's made me imagine that when they were a kid they tried calming a crying baby by playing a lullaby on their lute and accidentally ended up casting their first spell.

oh, and, i also wasn't really sure at first where in the world i wanted elenion to come from but i decided on something pretty quickly after getting multiple of those dialogue options suggesting that the protagonist is baldurian! i pictured them growing up in a somewhat small town with their family but moving to baldur's gate as an adult, hoping that if they left the comfort of their home and started to journey out into the world a little they'd eventually find their spark and become the bard they wanted to be. unfortunately they've had little luck so far because even after all this time they can't see that maybe their whole fixation on trying to be just like their father and achieve the exact same kind of success that he had is holding them back. the fact that their father died the year after they moved away hasn't helped either. and now, in the middle of traveling to a historical site that they'd wanted to see in person and use as inspiration for a song, they've been abducted by mindflayers and are struggling with the massive upheaval that this has brought into their relatively mundane life.

so. yeah. my tav for this first playthrough may not be the most unique or exciting character but i like him! i like figuring out what kind of choices he'll make and thinking up new ideas for what he likes and how he sees the world. also, i find it funny how in your reply to my ask you said you thought you'd be into gale but then you fell for astarion--because i thought that i'd be all over the edgy, brooding, snarky vampire man, but it turns out gale is so charming and funny that i'm probably going to romance him first. i'm also pretty intrigued by shadowheart and wyll but i'm so early in the game that i can't even say who i think my overall favorite companion will be because they all seem so interesting!! even karlach despite the fact that i haven't actually met her yet, i've seen a bunch of cool gifsets of her and my brother told me he's been romancing her on his playthrough. i really need to go find her soon.

i'm sure you can tell from everything i wrote here that i am definitely enjoying the game LOL. i can already tell that there's just so many different things to do and see, that i will both need and want to do a lot of different playthroughs and that it's going to be something that sticks with me. nothing wrong with using guides and walkthroughs btw! i do it too because i'm worried about missing too many things and have the world's worst sense of direction even with a minimap. honestly i probably need to look up some guides for certain mechanics that i don't feel like i've really figured out yet. there's a sarcophagus trap in the ruins early in the game that got me SO stuck and got my whole party wiped and then i looked up a video and found out you could turn off the whole trap system by pushing a switch... i felt so stupid askjdfgf.

anyway, i think this got to be way too long of a reply so i will stop here! but if you ever wanna tell me more about your tav or anything definitely feel free to and i hope you're having an awesome day!

Sepulcrave: Narrator of Legend of the Rat Bastards, wet rat necromancer man who never bathes, I hate him, I love him, I want to put him in a jar and shake him, hated his BFF for ten years then forgave him on sight the second they refound each other, has pickled a corpse in a barrel of spirits and didn't tell his husband for five years.

Max Duarte: DnD character, bratty nonbinary tiefling warlock, wants to not care but cares so much, riddled with self-hatred but also has a god complex, monsterfucker, found out they had a baby brother and immediately kidnapped him for twelve hours.

Eliza Farthing: Genderfluid Victorian actor who thought she was a literal fairy for almost 30 years, will tempt fate and the police, hates her brother but will go to court for him, will fight anyone, would rather die than be normal.

Alexander Farthing: Most normal man in the world, took the homophobe-to-gay-man pipeline, found out he was a fairy and hasn't recovered since, has punched a policeman and would do it again.

Arthur Watt: 35 going on 76, most normal fairy you have ever met (including Alexander), has a lapdog called Lancelot, spent years creating a normal life only to throw it away the second he saw a pretty man in need, world record for most anxiety.

Lord Kemilius: Literal Satyr, runs a circus, assigned dad but not good at it, done with everyone's shit, 80% top hat and mutton-chops, would like to be personally responsible for the death of P. T. Barnum.

Turik: Small trans royalist, can turn into a kestrel, has two people he actually wants to talk to, please tell him what to do, friendly to literally everyone, somehow The king thought getting him to assassinate someone was a good idea, secretly a very good liar.

Adramal: Used to turn into a magpie before the horrors, missing a leg due to the horrors, extremely gay, wants to overthrow the monarchy, accidentally got unofficially adopted by a woman he can't stand, got bored, overthought and tried to start a coup.

Lady Constancia: She's serving evil stepmother, deserves a gun but gets a crossbow, all she wanted to do was shoot birds now she's trying to overthrow the government, her adopted son has a royalist boyfriend and she hates it, gaslight gatekeep girlboss.

Ed, Jim, and The Beard as Metaphor

i cant stop thinking about my own ed/jim parallels post and the way that their stories and gender experience actually soooo closely mirror each other, and how the beard is such a critical locus to understanding both these parallels and their trajectories as characters

like, to articulate in actual words what i was thinking in that original post, i think of "beard" in this show, and certainly with these two characters, as being metaphorical for responsibility, outside expectations, and, as jim puts it, a prison of one's own making

because in both cases, that's exactly what it is. despite the social pressures and familial expectations that drove them there, both "Blackbeard" as an identity and the disguise of he/him, capital M "Man" that Jim takes on as part of their path to revenge are things that they build and choose for themselves. Ed built the legend of Blackbeard to escape the dangers of home, and to fulfill the things they needed to be to survive. Jim built their masculine persona to do the same thing: get revenge and survive the fallout of getting it. The beard is, in many ways a prison, which both Jim and Ed articulate in various ways: Jim commenting directly on the physical discomfort of the fake beard, and Ed mirroring this by talking about the emotional discomfort of outside perceptions of them as Blackbeard

one of the most critical moments in the whole show to me, honestly, is when Lucius explicitly brings in queerness to our understanding of what "beard" actually means in the logic of the story. "not all beards are actual beards" both cements "beard" as a metaphor, AND acknowledges "beard" in the gay sense as part of that. a beard as a concession to what the world thinks you should be, to your own need for safety, to your fear that the people you care about won't accept you as you are. A beard is explicitly a signifier of hiding your queerness, as much as it is a signifier of Responsibility to other kinds of social expectations. This is textually true for Jim in both senses: the beard hides their nonbinary identity AND keeps them locked into their hunt for revenge

When we meet Ed, it's immediately clear that Ed is being crushed by the latter in the same way Jim was--the responsibility and expectations of being Blackbeard are boring, wearying, so oppressive in some ways that Ed would rather die than keep bearing them--with the queer implications of the term left, at first, unspoken. I think it's also important that the show textually (both literally and through the ol' "run me through" scene) tells us that Ed has sex with men, and that they're comfortable doing so. so, if the metaphorical beard of queerness isn't about sexual orientation, the way it is for Lucius, maybe, like Jim, it's more about an expression of gender that feels right and true...

as i laid out in my original post, over the course of the show (though at different moments) both Ed and Jim shed some of the traditional expectations of manhood for something more nuanced. They ditch their beards, take on new (old) names that better fit who they are now, experience love at the hands of their new family--and finally rejection at the hands of the old. Nana and Izzy function in much the same way here: making Jim/Ed's newfound acceptance of who they are seem like a bad thing. a dangerous thing. the loss of their "beards" as something shameful.

what's interesting here is that in the text of the show so far, Jim's experience of "beard" has been more explicitly aligned with gender expectations and Ed's has been more explicitly aligned with responsibility and other social expectations. but in these moments of rejection by family, they're reversed.

Nana doesn't have much of a problem using Jim's new name and pronouns--it's their rejection of their responsibility, their destiny, the expectations she has for them that drives the rejection. With Izzy and Ed, what has previously only been a subtextual conversation about gender and presentation becomes very nearly explicitly gendered. Ed insists "I'm still Blackbeard," as an assertion of their capability, their ongoing acceptance of responsibility to crew. But it's Ed's PRESENTATION that Izzy takes issue with. It's Ed's new name, Ed's softer way of being, their acceptance of a life without the "beard," both literal and metaphorical, that Izzy can't stand.

It's a textbook transphobic rejection, and it makes it difficult to read what follows as anything other than a detransition: changing back into old clothes, taking back the old name of Blackbeard/the Kraken, LITERALLY drawing back on a beard, wearing a facade of that old identity and the responsibilities of it that Ed has found so oppressive for so long.

lots of people have read this as a detransition (and lots of people have read it otherwise, which is fine), but what i haven't seen talked about almost at all is that jim has their own detransition era! we just don't tend to think about it that way because a) it's so brief, and b) they aren't transitioning back to the gender they grew up with, but the one that's synonymous with disguise and pretense

after their journey recognizing that they don't have to be a man or a woman, they don't have to wear the literal or metaphorical beard to be loved and accepted, they can take on a name that suits them as they are, not as they once were--after all this, they dress up as a man again as part of their taking back on the burden of responsibility and expectations. when they go back to Jackie's, they dress up as a priest to get close to Geraldo. it's only for one scene, but they're taking back on that male persona to fulfill their nana's expectations, rejecting their newfound comfort being nonbinary

both Ed and Jim literally dress up as men, take back up their "beards," as a response to rejection from the people who have been in their lives the longest. the difference is that, for Jim, they found someone who would speak to them frankly about what the "beard" means. about what they'd be giving up to wear it. and critically, they have the possibility of distance from the person who would force them to keep wearing it. Jackie acts as a kind of grounding force for Jim, an equal who has seen her own share of revenge and lived with her own kinds of metaphorical beards, who shows Jim that when they're being forced to choose between A and B....they can just choose C instead.

as part of Ed's healing next season, i think it's going to take a similar kind of acceptance from an equal, and almost certainly some distance from Izzy to stick. Maybe Jim could even be that person for Ed, closing the loop of their parallels, allowing Ed the space to be who they want to be, to ditch the beard in both the literal and metaphorical sense. or even to open up a Plan C, where Ed doesn't get rid of the beard entirely in either sense, but finds a happier, healthier relationship to it!

i just cant get over the fact that they had the line "not all beards are actual beards." literally spoken out loud in this show. EXPLICITLY referring to queer gender identity. and then a character named BLACKBEARD......expresses dissatisfaction with the way they're perceived and they way they're expected to move through the world.........there's so much happening here with the way gender and presentation and expectation and responsibility intersect with experiences of masculinity, and i both hope and fully believe Ed will get space to explore it next season the way Jim has gotten to in this season

Checked the notes on that women writers rec list and several other people already wrote “this is Robin Hobb erasure” in those exact words :’)

So in honour of this hivemind I must say : I am having the time of my life with the Liveship Traders, excites rant with (huge) spoilers ahead :

I am at that point where Kennit is about to get absolutely WRECKED and I swear to god it feels so satisfying. The character arc and development for every single character in these books is pure mastery. In the case of Kennit you really go from “what a despicable man he really just has luck on his side” to “well I guess even if he did good accidentally he still did good... I almost love this Awful Imbecile” and finish straight into “OH!! NEVERMIND he really was a despicable man the whole time!!!”, a pit of disgust right on time where the whole story is setting up to absolutely destroy him. Kennit is a great example of how “does the right thing for the wrong reasons” is not equivalent in terms of ethics as “does the right thing for the right reasons”. But to quote a great thinker “they really had us in that first half I’m not gonna lie!”

What I really like in these books is that the centristTM opinions of certain main characters are not automatically & heavily presented as the right ones. I am still cackling at Hiémain’s “but they didn’t deserve to die!!” bullshit not being put on a pedestal. Ms Hobb did that! Her mind! Also the Vestrit family not being given an (entirely, let’s be real) free pass for not standing up to Kyle and letting Vivacia happen. The main characters, the actual heroes try to pass off responsibility for bad things and in most media it’s like “but they didn’t directly kill someone with their own hands so aren’t they kinda innocent?”

and then it skips to a single entry line (dec 3 2018) "reyn khuprus is a massive idiot" :')

Ohhhh my goodness gracious

I have gone full baby on Dutiful, he is the sweetest most cute drama teen since Fitzchivalry himself. I love him with the force of an exploding sun. His interactions with every other character are both precious and absolutely hilarious. He’s got a great mini-me vibe going on with Fitz, wrapped in Hobbs usual delicious irony.

Also poor Dutiful so lonely and starving for warmth, human attention!! The bit where Fitz is like all them hoes been begging me for this for MONTHS but I just can’t say no to those baby blues. I was like congrats Dutiful you just got a dad! Free dad with your meal!

I have come to the revalation that transfemm Gehrman fills me with so much joy so Lozza loves his beautiful wife now <3 I haven't really re-labled Lozza's sexuality and I don't really feel the need to. Characters that made me realize I was trans

You ever just wanna make a comprehensive list of everyone that gave you gender envy from a young age? Yeah me too.

So here it is! A list of every character that made me realize I was trans, starting from when I was a little kid!

No. 1 - Aravis from The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis

Okay, weird racism in this book aside, the amount I loved Aravis was probably the first indicator that I was not cisgender. I thought she was so cool for dressing up as a boy and rejecting traditional femininity and being so "not-like-other-girls" (i also had a big not-like-other-girls phase around the time I read this, go figure). Of course, she is cisgender, and seems to fall into a *slightly* more traditional role by the end of the book, but this isn't about C.S. Lewis' gender stuff and more on the fact that I related very heavily to Aravis and the fact that she didn't fit in with other girls, because I also felt the same way.

Her male co-star Shasta also gave me gender envy so between them both it's no wonder 9-year-old me loved this book.

No. 2 - Deryn/Dylan Sharp from Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld

Once again it's the girl-dressing-up-as-a-boy-to-fuck-with-gender-rules trope! Only this time, Deryn Sharp is actually treated like a man by her male co-star, Alek (up until he figures out that Dylan is actually Deryn, but then he's quite supportive of her gender fuckery). Deryn, like Aravis, doesn't actually feel any gender dysphoria. Her gender fuckery is a means to pursue her passion for air travel via joining the army. This does get fucked up by the last book and she ends up needing to leave the army, but we don't actually see how she presents herself when in non-millitary society so I will headcannon that she remains quite butch.

I thought Deryn was the coolest when I was 13, and even wound up copying her way of saying "barking spiders" for a bit. And her and Alek's romantic relationship was peak goals for me, probably because it begins while Deryn still presents masc.

No. 3/4 - Link, from TLOZ: Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild

So, the Links! Let's talk about the Links!

Twilight was the first male character I remember projecting myself onto. So much so that I did not ship him and midna OR him and Illia (and didn't really like illia's quest), not because they didn't have chemistry but because I am very homosexual and did not like the idea of my self-insert being with a girl. Now, do cis girls project themselves onto male character? Idk but I'm not cis and this is something I did so *shrug*

I've lumped these two together because Zelda was a sort of twofer for me. I played Twilight Princess and then a couple years later played BOTW and began discovering what transgender people were. At the time I ID'd as nonbinary, and my Zelda obsession grew with my understanding of "shit I'm not cis." (I even named myself after a Zelda character for a bit). The links were my first *conscious* experience of gender envy, and hold a special place in my heart for it.

No. 5 - Aether from Genshin Impact

Last, but CERTAINLY not least, is the man, the myth, the legend, Aether Genshin Impact. And there is a STORY behind this guy's inclusion.

See, by the time I started playing genshin, I had long since accepted that I was not a girl. I called myself nonbinary, and thought I was okay with simply "not being a girl" and was fine doing what I saw all the other nonbinary people doing (binders, no testosterone, vaugely masc clothes, etc).

Then I booted up genshin impact, and had to pick between Aether and Lumine. And I still remember the "oh shit" moment I had when I realized that the default I expected to fall into would not make me happy. I had expected myself to pick Lumine, because I had previously thought that I was more comfortable with femininity than masculinity. I realized that I didn't just want "genderless." I wanted masculine. And I had this guy to thank for helping me come to that realization.

Anyways that's not all the characters that gave me gender envy or really even my entire "here's how I knew I was trans" but they are the most influential ones to me.
