I find it utterly fascinating that people say things like Jerma is a kpop boy for adhd people or that Jerma event streams are like the superbowl for us. Because they are. I wanna take a moment to talk about this because I think it’s part of a larger thing.
I don’t think I’ve ever said it on here but it is so interesting to me that so many internet creators seem to be neurodivergent, undiagnosed or otherwise. To neurotypicals their art seems to be strange, new, and some sort of spectacle. To nds their art seems to be just the thing we’ve been looking for all along. Adhd people love Jerma because he Gets It. His brain works similarly to ours in a way that an nt person’s couldn’t. He has similarly weird or out there creative ideas but that’s probably just normal for him. That’s how his brain works. I’m sure other nd people can relate. My personal experience with this is constantly crossing art forms and linking common things between what seem like completely different pieces of media. It’s because both interest me, fundamentally, and because common themes in media, especially about trauma, are another interest of mine.
This creative strangeness is quintessential to the nd artistic experience. I’m sure every one of us at some point has had an nt say “oh that’s weird” in those words or more. And sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad. Usually it ends up being good in the long run because regardless of whether or not the fascination is there for mockery, whether or not they are watching us like we’re animals, we start movements. We open new spaces. We do new things. Our wacky quirky silly goofy interests make us want to pursue new forms of art instead of simply climbing to the top of already existing things. The internet has opened up spaces for us in so many ways too. I love this, I love what’s happening with it. For a long time art has been classist and ableist but with the internet that is lessening. People are beginning to realize the value of “odd” creative endeavors at a much more rapid pace than they used to. Art is moving forward and I’m very good directions.
Maybe you think it’s weird that this post had to start with Jerma. I don’t. I think it’s pretty natural actually. He’s a very good example of an nd person that people stop to gawk at but that a lot of nd people just genuinely love. Nd people seem to have taken the joke that he’s utterly insane and run with it because that sort of morbid fascination from nts is relatable to us. But to be honest I don’t believe that the joke started in good faith, though I’m glad it’s landed where it has.
Nd art should be respected and widely enjoyed and loved like this so much more often. I’m glad we have our funnyman whose brain just seems to hit home for a lot of us. And I’m glad he likes to push creative boundaries. He’s definitely not the only one either. I could’ve started this post with game grumps or Markiplier. I chose Jerma because to be entirely honest with you I’m a bit hyperfixated and also, the way he is is how my brain works. Which I think is neat. Like there is someone out there who is definitely Getting It and Understanding the Experience for me.
I think another part of why we like our own in artistic spaces is the whole interest-based neurosystem thing. Since our interests or ideas change pretty frequently we like to see that in media and art. The higher brow art world doesn’t change very fast. It’s slow and it’s full of old vampires who refuse to learn technology or put down their classism. Nd people simply can’t function like that, it’s just not how we work. Part of why Jerma has stayed interesting for so many years without changing the style of his content like some other creators is that, intrinsic to his style, is constant change. Everything feels a little like improv and a little like a delirious fever dream which is exactly what the inside of my poor little unmedicated brain is like. I’m sure other people can relate. It’s not that Jerma has never changed, it’s just that he’s so fucking used to it that we are too. And it’s what keeps things interesting.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. TLDR; respect neurodivergent art more and support these types of creators. They’re a huge part of movements and they especially are now with the internet and new accessibility.

Random Komahinanamiki Headcanons!
I ship these four all together, lol
HAJIME
He’s trans male and bi!
His mother’s Japanese, but his father’s Mexican. Hajime actually got bullied quite a bit because of it.
His mother died of illness when he was young, so for most of his life at home it was just him and his dad.
His mom’s illness and the Izuru Kamukura Project have caused him to despise hospitals.
Before she died, Hajime’s mother would tell him that she would beat off bullies with a stick if she needed to. She stood by this even while confined to a hospital bed.
Holy cow this got darker than it was supposed to be
Here’s some more cute ones
Hajime’s favorite kind of cookie is chocolate chip! His friends like to harmlessly tease him about it (since chocolate chip cookies are pretty much the most average you can get).
His favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate.
He’s actually kind of short compared to his partners. The only one shorter than him in the group is Chiaki, and not by much.
Everyone considers him to be 100% part of Class 77.
He has some kind of undiagnosed mental disorder. He’s narrowed it down to ADHD or autism, but he doesn’t have the energy to see anyone about it.
He likes puzzles, especially rubik’s cubes and metal puzzles
CHIAKI
She’s a demigirl and bi!
She’s always falling asleep on her partners. Either that, or she falls asleep and one of her partners falls asleep on her.
Her favorite kind of cookies are sugar cookies!
Normal ones, not the iced ones packed with preservatives from the grocery store
Her favorite ice cream flavor is strawberry cheesecake
But any kind of ice cream with strawberries is a winner in her book
She only likes strawberries if they’re sweetened using sugar or with some kind of cream
Ironically, her favorite game is Tetris
She definitely has a little bit of chub. She likes snacks and she doesn’t exercise much.
She’s accidentally called Chisa “mom” several times before
MIKAN
She’s trans female and bi!
She has an older brother who’s a doctor in England. They video chat often :)
She and Nagito weren’t dating at first (they were just both dating Chiaki and Hajime), but they eventually realized their feelings for one another
It was while making cookies for Hajime and Chiaki
Her favorite kind of cookie is white chocolate peppermint!
Her favorite ice cream flavor is peppermint too, she really likes minty flavors
As a young child she used to eat toothpaste. She doesn’t anymore
She likes scented candles, especially the bakery scented ones!
She’s tall and strong, because I said so.
Somehow I don’t have that many for her? It’s odd ‘cause she’s one of my comfort characters
NAGITO
He’s omnisexual!
He has a shirt that says “I love my trans partners”, he made it himself though so it’s kind of sloppy
His favorite kind of cookie is oatmeal
If a cookie has oatmeal in it, he loves it
Doesn’t matter if it has chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, nothing or even raisins in it
His favorite kind of ice cream is toffee
No thoughts, head empty
In normal conditions, he has one braincell that bounces around his head like the DVD screensaver, and when it hits a corner he produces a thought
He does best intelligence-wise under a small amount of pressure, such as when he was in the Killing Game
High-pressure situations (like the Chapter 1 class trial) just cause him to break
His mother was French
He and Makoto are cousins! Their moms are sisters
“Don’t Worry, Be Happy” by Bob McFerrin is constantly on loop in his head
If y’all want me to write more, please tell me! I may do this with more of my ships :)

Autistic Headcanon: Bob Belcher from Bob’s Burgers.
I haven’t seen a headcanon for Bob but I definitely think he could be Autistic, and probably has inattentive type ADHD here are some examples:
He has difficulty in social situations, he get’s grumpy when he’s overwhelmed.
He isn’t always aware of social rules, the first example that comes to mind is talking to the turkey he picks out in, “Turkey in a can”
He has some pretty major special interests, Burgers, Cooking/learning about new ingredients, gardening/foraging, Burger Boss video game.
He infodumps and monologues when he is talking about his interests.
He has a strong sense of morality and very strong principles.
He stims, mostly vocal stims, like talking for his vegetables.
He hyperfocuses.
He has major executive dysfunction. There is a whole episode about it, “Dream a little Bob of Bob”
He feels a lot of shame and guilt for his neurodiversity- probably because he’s always felt different. His character is a good example of what someone can act like when they’ve spent their whole life masking, and have been undiagnosed for so long.
Neurdivergent characters can make him feel uncomfortable at times, especially when they aren’t masking and are publicly and freely acting neurdivergent. Again this is common especially for people who spend most of their life undiagnosed, and masking.
He has a monotone voice.
He struggles to identify his own emotions.
He is very resistant to change, and has a routine. Even when he is forced to take a day off from his routine he finds another restaurant to work at, in the episode “Roamin- Bob-iday” (omg these titles)
He loves puns and word play. It seems like autistic people like certain kind of humor- humor that isn’t at anyone’s expense.
He’s not that great at small talk.
He doesn’t like sudden unexpected changes, but has to deal with them often
He has had meltdowns, especially when he feels embarrassed or is trying to manage something out of his control.
He had an isolated childhood- This isn’t just a autistic thing- but he did feel like an outsider as a kid and spent a lot of time just with his dad, and his soap dog, and spatula airplane (preferring to play with odd toys are also an autistic trait)

I'm always up for peddie HCs!
they both low key have undiagnosed adhd. if you wanted to torture them just make them sit still and quiet for longer than two minutes. half of their detentions start with them being left unsupervised
eddie steals her leather jacket. technically it’s like a men’s large and she got it from the charity shop in town and he takes it from her all the time because he likes the smell of her perfume. he almost gets away with it too until alfie notices
sometimes they hang out in the tunnels at night because eddie has the locket and it means they can also sneak out the house easily when the front door is locked
eddie forces mr sweet to take them to a redo meal in a less fancy restaurant with a nicer atmosphere. he basically has to drag her there kicking and screaming but she ends up having a decent time and all the comments about her not being his sort stop. mr sweet keeps testing her on things only she’d know all night to make sure she’s not piper
eddie bought her a really cool necklace for Valentine’s Day, despite her saying it was a dumb useless holiday that didn’t mean anything to her. she had bought him candy that he had been missing from home. kt was consulted for both presents
his mom regularly calls patricia after they get back together. he’ll come in to her room and she’s like “I’m on the phone to your mum so you mind! yeah that was him 🙄 anyway how are the cats?”
she however doesn’t let him meet her parents until after they’ve graduated. he ran into them when he was helping her pack her stuff to go to college in America
he calls her all the time when he’s just walking around or in between classes or if he’s on the way to meet her. she finds it a little weird at first coz she’s not used to being in a relationship but pretty soon everyone gets used to him being on speaker whilst she’s just like getting a drink
the reason she dumped him was because he told her that he loved her in passing and it freaked her out. she figured out she loved him back like a week later but she figured it was too late. it definitely wasn’t.
they’ve been banned from ever doing washing up duty together again at least six times. no matter how hard victor tries they some how always end up together, both soaked and the whole kitchen covered in bubbles
at this point it’s so easy to catch them both doing something wrong together that whenever victor needs an odd job doing like his gardening he just keeps a close eye on them for like 2 hours and he can usually manage to find a reason to give them detention and make them do it. they secretly kinda enjoy it
some ghosts harass eddie a few time between s3 and tor and sibuna has to be reassembled. it’s never as bad as the other times but patricia and eddie work together as a bad ass couple
they play long ass games of truth or dare that can last weeks at a time. patricia always picks dare because she hates talking about herself and there isn’t much she won’t do if you double dog dare her. eddie just keeps trying to push her to her limit so she’ll say truth. he just wants to know what her middle name is. no one else will tell him

Newspaper was cancelled.
Is there a trend of phone service people who are definitely immigrants being told to Americanize their names? I feel like this has happened the last two times I've had to call an 800 number. "Hello, my name is Mary." and "Hello, my name is George." Are you really called María and Jorge? It's okay, you can tell me. I'm not like all the others. Although Mary did sound like an odd mix of Latinx and seriously Wisconsinite accents, so who can say.
C's friend has been coming out to help us with our blackberry situation this week. He's given us a lot of native plants in the past. He's super knowledgeable on native landscaping and on the same page as us re:organic gardening and not spraying toxic chemicals everywhere (which is why we have a blackberry situation.) He's been out twice and he's already totally transformed my mom's rose garden. I couldn't even believe it, and I am SO excited to watch it bloom this year.
I think Sid's (undiagnosed but highly likely) ADHD is finally showing us its heavy side. I told Curtis today, "I feel like I'm failing him as a parent, because the only class he's passing is the only class where he doesn't get homework." Completing smaller homework tasks is easier. Longer, more complex tasks are a nonstarter. And turning in finished homework is the most difficult of all, and the one thing I can't really help him with. I guess we're going to try to keep intervening on our own for a little longer, but I feel like we're hitting a wall here.
Sid just told me this story: "At lunch on Wednesday, someone actually said that they don't think gay people actually exist, and like half my friends went, 'OH MY GOD, I'M IMAGINARY,' and it was AWESOME."

Not everyone can say they’ve been to the Big Apple, but  ELIJAH 'ELI' JOHNSON, a 39 year-old CIS MALE has lived in THE BRONX for THIRTY-NINE YEARS. This is the city of dreams and HE knows it, because they came to NYC to be a DOG WALKER. Well, that and as a ROOMMATE to LEON MACKEN. Living in the city means they meet all kinds of people, but everyone always seems to think they look like ANTHONY MACKIE. They even got away with free cab fare once because of it!
tw: mention of depression, mention of adhd
ok hello i am fully taking the L right now and going with bullet points because brain.... says no to full bio for now SORRY
so eli is bronx born and raised!! his family has lived in nyc for as long as he can remember (which isn’t weird, seeing as he was literally born here) and he wouldn’t have it any other way. he absolutely loves it here.
grew up in a big family, three younger sisters and one younger brother, plus his parents and his grandmother... it was always a full house, at least!
because of this, eli absolutely loves being around people and if he has to spend a lot of time alone, he’ll become a bit of a Debbie Downer
so!! about his Current Situation....
he was actually doing pretty well, working the stock market as a broker until he made some bad investments and lost most of his investments and his own savings in about 24 hours, lost his fiancé the day after that (turns out she was a bit of a golddigger.. who knew!) and basically just... had nothing.
he had to move back in with his mom for a little bit after that, became a little bit Depressed for a while.. saw a therapist, got back on the horse and is now.. doing literally any job under the sun he can find to make some cash, because no actual business wants to hire him after the mistakes he made at his old job.
so, dog walking, babysitting, food delivery... you name it, this man has done it. currently the dog walking thing is working out so well for him that he’s thinking of expanding his business to include a dog washing service as well! he just needs to properly train himself for that first. aka watch some youtube videos on it. we’ll see if it works out or if he’ll move on to yet another job.
so basically; if you have an odd job laying around, give eli a call! big ass chance he’ll do it.
in reality, he just doesn’t really know what to do with his life now. he’s a little bit directionless; but he makes up for it with his good natured spirit and stupid jokes!!
because he has those odd jobs, he can’t technically afford the rent to his one-bedroom by himself. was posting an ad on craigslist the best idea? no. did he make a friend for life? most definitely. do they bicker like a married couple sometimes? very likely.
personality wise, eli is usually a moderately happy guy. what you see is what you get with him though, and if you catch him on a bad day, you’ll know. this doesn’t usually happen, and he’ll likely just be joking around with you (also has a little bit too much energy sometimes, but if that’s because of those 5 cups of coffee or the undiagnosed adhd, we’ll never know).
some wanted connections could be old coworkers from the stock exchange, people he’s worked with or for at these odd jobs, people he’s currently walking dogs for, friends, the barista who serves him those many coffees, neighbors... you name it, it can happen!

First Year Profile
Taking a page from the lovely @carewyncromwell who’s the blog that introduced me  to HPHM and encouraged me to play.
While I’m still in year one [ im trying to catch up as fast as possible T-T] I wanted to jot some stuff down about my MC and  maybe have ppl meet her.
There’s stuff missing but that will be added as I progress through the game.
Tumblr media
[ Image ID close up of a girl with shoulder lenght brown hair, a round nose, and blue eyes. She’s smiling at the camera. End ID]
NAME | Marta Beatrice Venturi
NICKNAMES | Marti -Goes by that everywhere, actually doesn’t like her full name, and only gets called it when she’s in trouble-. Smarti [ Jacob called her this. Off limits] Munchkin [ her dad] Venturi. [ Snape and Merulla]
Pronouns | She/Her
ORIENTATION | Bi
[PERSONALITY] Marti is a bit capricious due  to being the baby of her family and tends to want things to go her way. She’s a bit mischievous because of this and can be rather childish though also very playful and sweet for the same reason. She is also incredibly empathetic and always there for her friends, becoming very protective of them. She’s highly social and outgoing often known for befriending people at the drop of a hat. Despite this first impressions tend to stick to her and once she makes up her mind about you it can take a lot for her to change it. [ ie both Snape and Merula are already in a bad light for her after one meeting with each while both Flitwick and Hagrid are in a good light.]
She’s very protective of and tries to do right by those she considers friends and can be highly protective of them.
Tumblr media
[Image ID; Marti standing between a girl with dark skin, ling black hair and glasses [ her friend Rowan] and a girl with  short brown hair. The text reads under her ‘’get away from her’ End ID]
Jacob is her berserk button as she loves him dearly and still hasn’t let him go. Anyone talking badly about him instantly goes on her sh-t list and will cause her to lose her temper.
Tumblr media
[Image ID- Marti looking angry as a text box below him reads ‘’expelling him was completely unfair; and it was just as wrong of him to run away without telling. End ID]
[BIOGRAPHY]
Marti is the third child of Abigail Rowle and George Venturi. Both purebloods. They had two boys before her, Jacob [ ten years older than Marti] and Edwin [ four years older than Marti]. Most of Marti’s early memories include her family either together or separately and are good ones.  She was specially close to her oldest brother as he often babied her and had a soft spot for her.
There was a rough patch when Abigail and George after months of arguments and the relationship being rocky, separated. However, Marti was both too young and sheltered by both her brothers for it to affect her too much.  Their father, a wizard world attorney, kept full custody of the three of them which Abigail was okay with.
Raising three kids was a handful for George and while he tried his best and the family was very loving [ with all three Venturi kids being unequivocally Daddy’s Girl/Boys] there were a lot of times when Jacob and even Edwin eventually  picked up the slack. Being the baby, Marti was coddled and never wanted for much attention not in the very least because while Jacob tried to not have favorites between his siblings he undoubtedly had a soft spot for his baby sister.[ not that Edwin ever begrudged her this. ]
While Jacob went to Hogwarts when Marti was still really young [ which led to more than a few tantrums specially in his first year] he remained an important figure in her life and the three Venturi remained close, reuniting every break the school allowed even after Edwin joined his brother [ starting his Hogwarts career when Marti was  six ]
Unfortunately this wasn’t to last. Jacob vanished during his sixth year which sent the small family into turmoil. Edwin, who was about to start his first year, became withdrawn and sulked on his own, closing himself off to everyone including his own family. George was distraught at losing his oldest son. His relationship with Abigail became strained since they separated amicably enough but the loss of a child led them to be unable to be in the same room without assigning blame. [ though Abby still keeps her visits with her children she just..doesn’t speak to their father.]
And Marti lost her big brother.
The family grieved and eventually seemed to move on though none of them have completely let Jacob go. George still blames himself and harbors a lot of feelings of failing his son. Edwin is hugely withdrawn and refuses to speak on the matter. Marti in particular refuses to let Jacob go or give up on him returning and refuses to believe the things said about him. Jacob was and still is her hero, she had him on a pedestal before he left and still wants him to come back. Something that puts her at odds with Edwin who wants to forget and move on.
A few years down the line, George married a muggle named Nora who herself had a magical child and a muggle one. Both Edwin and Marti took this as a sign things would get better and that the family could heal, and both were happy to have additions to the family.
However this also added to Marti’s feelings that she was the only one who still remembered and hadn’t given up on Jacob as Edwin befriended Nora’s magical daughter [ her being the same age as him and a Hufflefpuff and the two becoming best friends as well as siblings] and her father seemed to move on with the help of his new wife.
Because of this she even more stubbornly clung to Jacob, to the happy memories she had of him- which she seemed to be alone in as his name was tarnished- and the more the family tried to get her to give up on him coming back, the more she dug her heels in.
Now going to Hogwarts, Marti is excited to start at the school and learn new things. She’s also determined to use the things she learns to bring her brother home someday.
WAND |  blackthorn wand with a unicorn hair core. It is eleven-and-a-quarter inches and described as "slightly springy and flexible.
Blackthorn, which is a very unusual wand wood, has the reputation, in my view well-merited, of being best suited to a warrior. This does not necessarily mean that its owner practices the Dark Arts (although it is undeniable that those who do so will enjoy the blackthorn wand’s prodigious power); one finds blackthorn wands among the Aurors as well as among the denizens of Azkaban. It is a curious feature of the blackthorn bush, which sports wicked thorns, that it produces its sweetest berries after the hardest frosts, and the wands made from this wood appear to need to pass through danger or hardship with their owners to become truly bonded. Given this condition, the blackthorn wand will become as loyal and faithful a servant as one could wish.
Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard.Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may 'die' and need replacing.
HOUSE | Slytherin
[MISC]
♦  Marti loves animals especially those often not considered cute [ bats, reptiles, bugs]  and has a pet snake she left at home as she didn’t see anything about snakes being acceptable pets in the letter. She plans to ask about it at some point in her first year. Her pet snake’s name is Mickey.
♦  Marti has 2 siblings in Hogwarts. Lizzie Mcdonald in Hufflepuff and Edwin Venturi in Ravenclaw. They don’t interact that much however due to the age gap [ they’ll graduate by the end of year 2] and the fact  that they have different social groups [ well Marti and Lizzie do. Edwin’s more a withdrawn Loner] as well as being in different houses.
♦   This is also in part because of Marti’s own feelings of perceived exclusion. While they love her very much and don’t mean to do it, the unmistakable  synergy between her elder siblings and the friendship that immediately sparked from it often leaves Marti feeling left out or looking from the outside. It makes her miss Jacob and cling to the idea of him coming back all the more since she remembers having a close relationship with him/being closer to him than to Edwin.
♦  The Venturi’s are very protective of each other[ and of their step siblings] specifically because of what happened to Jacob. It affected them both very badly though differently.
♦  The Venturi’s are considered blood traitors by most purebloods due to their lax views on Muggleborn wizards especially now that George married a muggle. [ their view of George was already low due to having separated from his pureblood wife].
♦  More to the point, all three Venturis [ George, Edwin and Marti ] are hugely defensive against anti-muggle and anti-muggle born sentiments due to Nora and her daughters being part of their family and are likely to react violently to it, especially if directed at them.
♦  Marti has a love for old rock bands due to Jacob often listening to them when she was little/when he was still around.
♦   She wore cat ear headbands as a kid and sometimes still wears them [ specially in first year second and third  as she’s still a child but I can definitely see her wearing them for fun as a teenager]
♦  Marti has a list of spells she wants to learn specifically to prank Merula. And she might be trying to remember what pranks Edwin and Jacob used on each other before Jacob went missing.
♦  Marti has -undiagnosed ADHD- and RSD [ Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria] which itself is a sympton of ADHD. This often leads to her not focusing in long classes sometimes and spacing out a lot or thinking of other things in class.
♦  RSD in particular makes it hard for her to regulate emotions and makes her incredibly sensible to perceived [ or real] rejection. She sometimes ends up crying even when she doesn’t want to  [ ie when Snape blamed her for Merula’s prank.] It’s specially going to be harder in her younger years.
♦  While this won’t happen for a long time, Marti’s first exposure to a boggart will reveal her biggest fear to be her family forgetting about all Jacob.
♦   Her mirror of erised by contrast is her whole family including Jacob with Edwin smiling like he used to and her dad not looking so worn and sad as he does ever since Jacob went missing.

Hi there.
Everyone always says "parenting isn't easy. It doesn't come with a manual." And while that is definitely true, it shouldn't have to be so damn hard either.
I feel like as new parents we come in COMPLETELY unprepared. Like, no one tells us what reeealllyyy to expect. You can want kids for 10 years, save up a bunch of money, have your own home and a good job, read every parenting book under the sun and still end up hiding in the bathroom eating icecream out of the tub with a spoon and a bottle of wine asking yourself what the heck you did to deserve the punishment that is the terrible twos. And that is entirely okay and completely normal. There is so much mom guilt out there these days. Parent shaming in general has been normalized to such a degree that it's sickening. Some times I just want to shake the stuck up moms who lecture other moms for silly reasons and say "what are you doing?! Who are you to judge?!"
I started out motherhood as a teen mom with absolutely no idea what I was doing, no help and a false sense of "I got this" attitude. My son put me through the ringer too. Between me being young, having undiagnosed mental health issues (PTSD, anxiety, depression and now possibly also ADHD) my son having ADHD, behavioral issues and me not having a proper support system through most of my time as a single mother, I had a rough start as a mother. I wasn't always what you'd consider a "good mom" either. I raised my voiced at my son too much, I spanked more than I should've needed too, I didn't know how to be creative with my discipline, I didn't use reward systems as much as I should've.. and my biggest regret? I didnt hug my son and tell him I loved him nearly enough when he was little.
I was so caught up in how hard things were I forgot to enjoy the great parts of being a mother. I didn't know how to ask for help. I did my absolute best at the time. I worked hard for my son, I lost jobs trying to help the schools control his unruly behavior. At one point I even took up odd house cleaning jobs and carried my cleaning supplies around in a cart on wheels because I don't drive just so I could set my own hours. I did that so I could sit in the school all day outside the office incase the teachers needed me to back them up if my son had a melt down. That boy was a lot of work a few years ago. Some days even now he can be a lot of work. But if you had told me that he would go from getting kicked out of daycare and schools because of his violent outbursts to being a wonderful young man who does chores, helps care for his little sister, loves and helps care for the pets in the house, works hard in school to get good grades and is one of the most polite kids I know.. nah, 4 years ago I never would have believed you.
I look back now and I am so proud. Not just of him and his amazing progress but myself as well. I grew up with him. He became responsible, aware of his emotions and how to control them, more honest and open and just more patient and kind in general. I became more patient and creative in how I parent and I learned how I should've been communicating with him in the first place. All this is stuff, I can go into in this blog. How it's okay to not be perfect, how to improve yourself so you can be better and stronger for your kids, how to work with your kids in ways they will better respond to and understand and best of all? Hopefully I can help you to not feel so alone. You're not alone. Even if it feels that way. I am not a professional. I am not a doctor or pediatrician. I haven't gone to school for child psychology and I'm not a sleep consultant or dietician. What I am though? Is experienced. I've lived this crap. I have made my mistakes so you don't have to. I won't judge you for the mistakes you've made and I am here for no other reason than to help those who feel the way I felt in the beginning. I don't want anyone to feel the way I felt. Scared, unsure, alone and quite frankly ashamed of myself for not being a good enough mom. I know now I did the best I could with the knowledge I had at the time but it took me years to figure that out. So, now you have an idea of why we are here, stay tuned. We're going to talk about how we can be the best parent versions of ourselves and surprise! It starts with you.

Whisper of the Heart of the Valley of the Wind on a Cliff by the Sea in the Sky with Diamonds
I have to come clean with you, dear readers. I’m pretty unfairly biased towards this film, because this is how I experienced the opening scene:
Tumblr media
It’s honestly hard for me to believe that this movie, made in 1995 and released in North America in 2006, just happens to feature “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” by John Denver, and that I just happened to watch it in 2018, when Country Road fever is at an all-time high after high-profile uses of the song in media such as Kingsman 2, Logan Lucky, and the Fallout 76 trailer.
Tumblr media
Anyway, fantastic songs aside, this really is a great movie, and one that surprised me. It’s the first Studio Ghibli movie not to be directed by Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, with Yoshifumi Kondō at the helm instead and Miyazaki retaining screenwriter credit. Kondō, who was a first-time director but who had played a significant role in Kiki’s Delivery Service and Only Yesterday, really knocked it out of the park here.
In addition to having a new director, it also departs from the Ghibli norm by eschewing fantasy elements, which I did not know going in. This didn’t go over so well with me in Only Yesterday, but Whisper of the Heart tells a much more cohesive story than that movie — or than most Ghibli movies, for that matter.
Tumblr media
Whisper of the Heart tells the story of a young girl, Shizuku, as she learns to embrace her natural talent for writing. It feels less like a short story compilation than some of the other movies I’ve reviewed, but it’s not necessarily because it doesn’t take any diversions. There’s an excellent subplot involving middle-school romances, and a lengthy (and deeply relatable) scene of Shizuku chasing a cat across town. Instead, what helps the film feel more cohesive is that each narrative thread is given a satisfying resolution.
I’m not sure yet if it’s a bug or a feature of Studio Ghibli, but many of their films don’t bother with what your average Hollywood movie would consider a denouement. It was jarring, to me, at first, to go without. The more I watch, the more I appreciate the way they stand apart from so many other movies I see, but I also can’t help it if the sense of resolution in Whisper of the Heart makes it one of my favorite movies from the studio so far.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that this movie does continues the trend of Ghibli movies being willing to tackle concepts that are more complex than those found in your standard kid’s fare. Like Kiki, Shizuku isn’t trying to save the world: she’s just trying to figure out her place in it.
Tumblr media
What I said about being unfairly biased towards this film goes beyond Country Roads — it would’ve been pretty hard for me to dislike a film about a kid who:
loves to read
procrastinates studying
has parents who aren’t on them as much as they should be
is insecure about their talents
doesn’t know what to do with their life
tries to make friends with stray cats
definitely has undiagnosed adhd
what is sleep??
At the start of Whisper of the Heart, Shizuku is content to enjoy her summer chasing her book-reading goal, but things change when she befriends Seiji. Seiji wants to be a violin maker and has already put in a lot of work towards achieving this goal; next to him, Shizuku feels unambitious and talentless. Still in middle school, he knows exactly what he wants to do with his life, and Shizuku has no idea.
Besides being relatable to a 26-year-old who still isn’t sure what to do with his life, it’s captivating to watch the carefree, insouciant Shizuku get fired up with the desire to prove herself. She decides to take inspiration from Seiji’s drive and write a story before he returns from his apprenticeship. Though she sacrifices time, sleep, and her grades, the movie doesn’t grant her a perfect victory. Again, like in Kiki’s Delivery Service, Whisper of the Heart doesn’t try to sell kids on a world where hard work pays off instantly, or where following your dreams is as simple as one moment of epiphany.
Besides an engaging story and great soundtrack, Whisper of the Heart also features some of the most true-to-life family dynamics I’ve ever seen on screen. At first, Shizuku’s family almost comes off as rude, but then you realize that it’s because they aren’t acting like they know they’re on camera. There’s a tendency in movies and television for family members to fit into one of two categories: caring and thoughtful, or angry and troubled. Shizuku’s family just feels … real.
Tumblr media
In our day-to-day lives, we don’t carefully consider each word that comes out of our mouths. Yoshifumi Kondō understood that a complaint here or a nag there doesn’t always signal some unresolved family drama; it’s just how people talk when they aren’t paying attention. Shizuku’s parents are supportive without coming off as overly sweet, and anyone with siblings will see some part of themselves in her relationship with her older sister. Each family member feels fully realized, and they make a fantastic backdrop for Shizuku’s journey.
I may not have known what I’d think of Whisper of the Heart going in, but I do now: it’s one of my favorite Ghibli movies so far. I think it’s tied with Porco Rosso for Best Dialogue, it’s the clear winner for Best Family, and it’s message is right up there with Kiki’s Delivery Service. It ends on a slightly odd note, but otherwise there’s not a thing I would change.
I guess you could say it’s … almost heaven.
Next up is Princess Mononoke, which I am definitely not smart enough to review. Good luck, me!

Alternate Review Title(s):
West Virginia of the Heart
Stray Notes:
see, I can love a Ghibli movie with no fantasy elements
the theatrical poster for this movie is very misleading
“why not try dating him? If you don’t like him, you can stop!” solid advice
adhd vibes from mom and shizuku
THE FLUTE MAN
the whole jam session scene is. GOOD.
when Shizuku can’t turn off her lamp without actually sitting up in bed is the most relatable thing in any movie ever
sugimura and yoko making up and being chill is also great
all the kids’ voice acting is good, so is all the background chatter
“you got a visitor. It’s a guuUuuy!” and the class just ERUPTS, A+++
this movie is so middle school, in such a good, beautiful way
of COURSE she didn’t notice you, you idiot, she was READING
“I’ll wait until you’re done” WHAT A GUY
it’s a little corny, but you’re a violin maker, not a writer” HAH sick burn kiddo
Spoiler Zone
I especially loved how Shizuku’s dad handles her declaration of a secret project. He acknowledges that perfect grades aren’t the only path to success, but essentially tells Shizuku that if you follow your own path, it’s all on you if you screw up. It would’ve been just too sweet and out-of-character if he had simply smiled and told Shizuku to follow her heart; his paired support and warning feel more true to life.
To me, the ending was a bit weird and came totally out of left field. A lot of this movie feels very middle-school, but in a great way that makes you smile; the ending feels middle-school in a way that makes you cringe and want to forget it happened. It’s a shame the movie has to end on such an odd note; I even watched it in Japanese with subtitles on, to see if it was a translation issue. It’s not. A couple other parts of the movie are a little clearer with subtitles (for instance, it makes much more sense to have Shizuku be translating Country Roads into Japanese than just re-writing it in English), but the ending is basically the same. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
