just binged all of redstone and skulk in one go. HOLY SHIT!!! i left some comments on ao3 but that wasn't enough. i needed to come to your tumblr too bc this fic has Changed Me A Little. it makes sense- i've been subscribed to you on ao3 for a while (remember hound's tooth? i think that was when i started following your writing. and monsters splitting hairs, although i'm not quite caught up on that one), and that was for a good reason- but tanguish and helsknight are something else! part of why i like fanfiction is because i get to see more of characters i already like- it takes a special fic to get me so invested in characters i've basically just met! and you do it so well! like. the subtle character things! the way i can pick out the hermits' (and martyn's, but i'm calling him a hermit for the sake of convenience) traits in the helsmits, but warped and twisted around like a funhouse mirror? fantastic. i love it. im eating that shit up. the ilttle differences and similarities between tango and tanguish, helsknight and wels (bc he isn't acting very knightly right now), impulse and the demon- it's so cool to see! i also saw the other ask you got where you talked about your process, and how you give your characters a list of traits as a guide to writing them- i'm definitely going to have to borrow that trick. it works! so well! it shows in your writing in the consistency of how the characters behave!

some other thoughts i had while reading:

helsknight being religious probably has a lot more to do with him being a knight than wels being a lutheran irl (which is where his name comes from and i find that hilarious), but still. if it's unintentional it's hilarious and if it's on purpose then it's a fun easter egg!

i relate to and understand tanguish, because i too would want to befriend helsknight, and also because if a bunch of big scary people basically adopted me and tried to teach me how to use a knife i would be so pathetic about it.

i relate to and understand helsknight and tango, because tanguish is the weirdest little cat ever and i too am captivated by his pathetic little freak charms, and i want to be his friend.

i neither relate to nor understand wels, because 1) if i saw my friend's presumably-evil counterpart skulking around the shopping district i would likely call them first (just seems like the polite thing to do, and also bc if helsknight showed up and the ppl who found him didn't call wels about it i feel like he'd probably be more than a little pissed), and 2) look at tanguish. he's just a little guy. he's a little guy and it's his birthday. how could you be mean to him.

tl;dr: redstone and skulk has compelled me to the point that leaving comments on ao3 wasn't enough, i needed to ramble straight into your inbox because it's just so good.

-- I didn't know Wels was Lutheran! I knew he was ex-military, and at least in my family's trends, military and religiosity go hand in hand, so it makes sense. But still! Learning new fun facts! I know nothing about the Lutheran Church [I was raised Baptist.] Probably gonna do some reading later.

-- I feel like Tanguish is going through that phase of "all the biker/military uncles have decided I'm one of them for some reason" and as someone who has gone through that before, for the same baffling non-reasons [used power tools in their presence once, a la Tanguish barely participating in a fight once] I sympathize. So, I think my first immediate thought when I read morally questionable is that it changes nothing!

Anticlimactic, yes I know.

Why?

Because while I've never said such, reader is morally grey. I see comments about how reader is good or reader is becoming bad by being with Donnie. Reader has thought this themselves. Less we not forget, however, that reader is an unreliable narrator. We've seen this occur in a multitude of ways. This is my own personal philosophy coming out (and also plays in conjunction with the themes of Weak Spot, mentioned here) is that, on the whole, most people are morally shades of grey. Very few, if any, people are truly bad or good. It's part of why a good villain is redeemable and people love to see it. It's also why there's sometimes nothing tastier than a hero who's moral compass pushes them too far! Life isn't black and white!

But that's not reading your actual question, that's just me taking a chance to say that. You asked how the story would change if reader was a villain.

Now that changes everything!

First off, the story wouldn't be about if you're worthy of love, we would be playing with a tango! As we've seen, Donnie folds in players he finds useful, takes out those in his way, manipulates them if he finds them beneath him, or further yet, completely ignores them if they don't fall on his radar. He's sort of ambivalent in that way, but it's walking eggshells for another villain. Especially in his younger years, if you toed anywhere near his line, he'd be on your shit. This is a man of information. He is more connected than Big Mama without question. He'd know about you the second you committed your first petty crime. Now the real question would be if he would actually remember your name or if he'd drop it into the monitoring stack where 99.9% of all the other villains go.

As we know in general, he had never once trifled with love and I'm less inclined to think he would do so for another villain. He has his persona to uphold and no matter how much of a small fry you are, you are still another rogue and to him that will always be a threat.

Are you retired? You were weak and couldn't stay in the game. That speaks to your resolve.

Are you small potatoes? You're not hungry enough. Why should he waste his time on you?

Are you in the big leagues? You are an opponent and he will move his chess pieces accordingly.

Dang, here I go again coming up with only bad endings. i swear I'm not doing this on purpose, but this just falls in line with the goals of Weak Spot and how changing the parameters alters the whole thing. The story is meant to be an examination of what makes you worthy of love and if your job really defines you. If you are both evil, of course you are both worthy because there is nothing standing in your way, but from the way Donnie has been crafted and come to be, it's difficult to see him dropping any of that for a fellow villain. The exact same could be said about a hero except we have already have textual examples of that (the other turtles). The thing about reader is they needed to be a regular person, because at his core Donnie just wants a chance to live authentically and who better to illustrate living for the sake of living than the every man? They had to be someone outside his world to open his eyes, otherwise he'd be looking through the exact same lens. No one is driven to crime just for the fun sake of it (look back up to my earlier general consensus, this is simply a blanket statement stemming from that). I'm not saying someone broken or 'bad' couldn't have reached Donnie, if we shift Weak Spot, there is absolutely some hot hot tension to be had of going toe to toe with a villain (case and point chapter 49), but within the framing of Weak Spot, I would say, overall, we have yet another dead end.

Emrys' Band of Misfits

Finally, after what feels like MONTHS; Emrys' chaos crew is finally finalized!

This is Emrys' main group of Pokémon he swaps in and out of his 6 mon team!

Cello is Emrys' first "catch"; she was a gift from Razia as an egg; and she was raised to be Emrys' service Pokémon for PTSD, depression, episodes and anger-management.

Dies Irae is Cello's himbo of a husband. He was Emrys' second catch, and was saved from a poacher trap [just a Pokémon version of a bear-trap]. His back right let had to be amputated, but he still has fantastic mobility!

Melody was Emrys' third catch on his way out of Hoenn, and Melody was evolve via traditional evolution methods for Milotic; by raising her beauty stat. She was benched after she received those gnarly scars across her scales for about 2 years; but Emrys recently pulled her from the Pasture to reconnect with her again.

Tango is Emrys' stupid little baby bitch. They are a total thief and was saved by Emrys with the aid of a Pink Carbink Tango had befriended as a Sableye pup by his own tribe of Sableye when they discovered Tango's "traitorous" ways.

Jazz and Sonata were caught without minutes of one another. Sonata was a gift from a stranger who didn't want Sonata due to Sonata not wanting to be a battling Pokémon. Emrys doesn't like battling, and typically is a contest-goer; so he happily took Sonata in.

Jazz was found soon after Sonata was added to the team. During a thunderstorm, Emrys found Jazz tucked deep inside a crack in a cave wall. Jazz electrocuted Emrys when he attempted to pull her free from the hole; frightened by his stature. It took some convincing, and promise of lots of yummy food, before Jazz agreed to come out of the hole and later joined Emrys' team.

Technologic, or Techno, was found buried in a landslide in Kalos with her father, a very large Noivern, and a much smaller Noibat. All were injured when Emrys arrived, and in great distress. Emrys rushed all of them to a Pokémon Center where it was revealed that the dad Noivern was playing with the pups when he'd hit an unstable rock within the caves they called home, causing the rockslide that trapped his pups and family in the cave. The Noibat caught under, soon named Techno, joined Emrys on his journey around the world upon the request of the father Noivern, stricken with grief at his loss. Techno was permanently blinded by her injuries, but her hearing and compassion has never wained. She evolved extremely prematurely in Alola due to mental stress and training. Emrys still isn't entirely sure why, but she's oddly proportioned because of her evolution happening far sooner than her body was ready for.

And finally, Arpeggio and Odette.

Odette was stolen from Team Verdant, one of 2 "evil" teams on Sutama. Emrys was a member for a significant time, but fled after stealing Odette after seeing the use and abuse of Shadow Pokémon being used by the team. Odette is fresh to the team, l about 2 and a half months recent; and she has a serious attitude problem.

But she's not as recent to the team as Arpeggio. Arpeggio was caught in present time, 3 weeks ago, for Emrys. Arpeggio was found losing circulation to his back legs behind a dumpster in a Sutama city alley. After rushed to a center, and getting into contact with the trainer who tossed Arpeggio, Emrys paid in full for the surgery that amputated Arpeggio's back legs and "caught" Arpeggio. They have yet to bond or get to know each other due to the recent circumstances.

Personality: Haku is pragmatic and logical, often able to keep a cool-head under pressure and resolve issues efficiently. This traits of his has earned him the reputation of being a neutral third party for disputes at Milgram. That doesn't mean he's a judge per say. The other prisoners just ask for his opinion and it somehow resolves the argument most of the time. How miraculous.

He's also reserved and introverted, so he prefers to keep to himself. He won't start conversations, but has no problem talking to someone if they approach him. They'll be able to witness a more talkative side to him if they manage to bring up a topic he's passionate about.

Compared to the other prisoners in high school, he could be considered disciplined and well-behaved. He helps out with the chores and has proper manners that endear him to most of the older prisoners. Seems he's just naturally popular.

His MV description: His MV mostly takes place in an auditorium. The colours that appear are bright and pastel, no deep colours are present. A piano and violin duet makes up most of the melody.

The MV starts with Haku doing a ballet routine with another boy. They share the same shade of black hair, but the other's is shorter. Haku's costume is white, whilst the other wears black.

An audience watch in adoration and awe as the pair continue to dance on stage. Their stares start to make Haku feel nervous. His dance partner smiles and tugs him into doing an impromptu tango routine. Haku is so shocked, he snaps out of his anxiety.

Haku smiles too after a while, enjoying the freestyle dance. But the audience starts to frown and whisper to each other, unhappy with the sudden change of routine. Haku slows down for a moment to look at them, his worry returning tenfold.

The stage gives out under him and his partner, as if a sinkhole had suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Haku finds himself falling with the other holding tightly onto his arm.

As they continue falling into a dark void, Haku looks down to see his partner laughing almost thrillingly. He smiles fondly and presses a kiss to the other's head. The MV ends.

Golden Dawn Josele AU

A very new au for me which simply asks, what if William offered Josele a place in his new squad instead of Yami? Because William and Josele are friends and he'd feel a certain kinship with her with both of them being cursed.

Josele would be the vice captain of the Golden Dawn when the canon timeline roles around, even though she's not particularly good at it.

Small but important detail. Due to my belief that Finral only pulled away from House Vaude and took up his mother's maiden name after Langris became a vice captain, he's still going by Finral Vaude and very much actively in the running to be Finesse's husband.

Oh, and this means that Josele and Langris are just not going to see eye to eye. Josele is an obstacle in the way of Langris' progress.

Yami kind of holds a grudge in this au due to stealing Josele away. He (correctly) believes that the Golden Dawn isn't the right environment for Josele.

And it really isn't. Her commoner status is the main sticking point with the whole squad. Even if the Bulls found her emotionless state weird/creepy, they didn't really hold it against her and got along with her fine. The Golden Dawn though, can't stand her.

Until Yuno. Once Yuno joins the squad the others are like "at least you're not a gross, backwater peasant."

Josele ends up being quite defensive of Yuno because in her cursed heart of hearts, she doesn't want him to suffer under the judgement of others.

Ballroom AU

I watched an anime about ballroom dancing once and so now every so often, my brain wants to think about it.

Josele, Morgen, and Nacht all participate in dancesport.

Morgen dances International Standard (which consists of waltz, Viennese waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, and tango).

Nacht dances International Latin (which consists of cha-cha-cha, samba, rumba, paso doble, and jive).

Josele dances both styles (she's very active after all).

Josele's likes the dresses for Standard more than Latin but the movements of Latin are so much fun that she just feels like she needs to do both.

Josele actually used to dance the role of leader in her youth. But once she met Nacht and Morgen, she finally got to be in the role of the follower!

Nacht and Josele often compete against duos like Fuegoleon and Charlotte, or Vanessa and Zora at the Latin competitions.

Meanwhile, Josele and Morgen would face off against people like Nozel and Nebra, or Finesse and Finral during Standard dances.

Yami kinda laughs at Nacht for being into dance but when he goes to watch him compete, he kinda glares daggers at Fuegoleon for being lucky enough to dance with Charlotte.

Role Swap AU

On the spot au: Josele is a noble woman while Nacht and Morgen are her commoner friends.

Morgen is more a hunter like the father, because he likes to be out in nature, with the plants and beasts. He likes the freedom of the wilds.

Nacht is the one who becomes a tailor, preferring the peace of the indoors and finds a little fun in threatening to prod unruly customers with his needles.

Josele's favorite thing in the whole world is a fur cloak made from a deer pelt that Morgen hunted for and Nacht sewed together.

Josele also picks up swordsmanship from Morgen because it's so elegant (also, I can't have Josele without her swordsmanship, I'm sorry!).

As for Josele, she becomes a devil host. But she and her parents don't use devil powers for any nefarious plots. Rather, the witch lineage from Gwenith's side of the family came into custody of the devil relics and protect them from true evil doers.

Nacht's immediate thought is asking Morgen to skin the devils, for how dare they claim Josele's soul for themselves.

Morgen is pretty scared of the devils but after learning about why Josele contracted with them, he calls her very brave.

Josele and Morgen still become part of the Grey Deer squad in this au. Nacht is a little less angsty about it here because he gets more chances to fix up Josele's clothes after missions.

There's definitely some... tension whenever Josele had Nacht retake her measurements and make adjustments to her clothes as she's wearing them.

And when Morgen and Josele become engaged, Nacht offers to make their suit and dress. He cries as he works, from joy and sadness.

Shadows House AU

I posted some little things for this au a while back.

Nacht is the Shadow Master and Morgen is his Living Doll (essentially personal servant). Nacht loves Morgen as his Living Doll but also as his own being.

Josele is the Living Doll of Jocelynne. Jocelynne isn't the nicest of Shadow Masters and rarely even calls Josele by name, usually referring to her as "my Doll" or "my Face."

Josele meets Nacht and Morgen by chance. While cleaning the window of her master's room (on the second story), she ends up toppling out and to the garden outside. Morgen notices Josele while cleaning Nacht's room and with Nacht's help, they construct a sheet ladder and get her back inside.

Josele doesn't stay long since she needs to return to Jocelynne, but they do exchange names and Josele takes time to get some dirt and twigs she got from her fall off of her.

Nacht is mischievously excited at the forbidden idea of meeting another Shadow's Doll without the other Shadow present, especially since Josele is such a sweetheart right off the bat.

Morgen and Josele secretly chat when the Dolls are out doing cleaning in the main building. Some nights, Josele sneaks out of her little chamber to visit Nacht and Morgen.

Nacht is self conscious because he's a Shadow. Sooty and faceless while Morgen is the one who has a handsome face that Josele can see and be charmed by. Also, him as a Shadow Master developing a crush on a Doll is very much not supposed to happen.

Jocelynne is actually very infatuated with Nacht and is incensed that Nacht would give attention to Josele and not Jocelynne as the Shadow Master.

Other pairs in this au include:

-Fuegoleon and his Doll Fuego -Willam and Patry -Mereoleona and Reona -Liebe and Asta (one of the younger pairs in Shadows House in this au) -Peter and Yuno (another young duo) -Nathaniel and Nozel -Charlotte and Charla

Mereoleona is a member of the Star Bearers (basically the leader of the children) by the time Nacht, Morgen, and Josele are present.

The other Star Bearers are... there (ocs that are really just there).

Morgen is a sweet tooth and very bitter coffee being a big thing at Shadows House has him very upset. But also means he vomits the stuff out and prevents him from being brainwashed long.

Oh yeah, there's brainwashing in this au because it's Shadows House.

First of all, that scene at the end with Purple seeing King as Reg: The only logical explanation that doesn't completely invalidate the previous episode would be for Purple to be seeing two people who used and abused him running towards him, and his only instinct is 'get up, get up and fight, be good enough for them, be good enough' so he does the only thing he's been taught to do: get back up. Otherwise, the scene doesn't make sense. Plus, Purple would have ran towards Mango to hug him if he'd seen this as not a threat.

The episode really made me almost cry while watching it, but afterwards I got thinking. Does it really make sense? Why did King have to get this whole-ass sad backstory to explain his motivations? Well, because otherwise, he's just evil because he can be. Then Sec and the CS would have to eliminate King altogether. And I don't think that would be a satisfying ending either. It just wouldn't work with the rest of the series. King has to have a way to be redeemed, and although I love the idea of a parent-child dynamic between King and Purple, it needed more time to build. Purple can't just trust King after being used by him and after meeting him only about a day ago. A better (but still very flawed) ending would be for Purple to go with CS and in the next episodes, Purple and King could build trust. King could eventually start temporarily living on the PC with the Color Crew (CS + Sec) and then Purple and King could start falling into a parent-child dynamic.

I also felt like the episode was really rushed. It just wasn't cohesive enough and everything went entirely too fast.

But can we just talk about how much of an absolute CHAD Red is??? Like, OMG, the guy gets himself possessed again, ON PURPOSE MIGHT I ADD, and then he faints, and then just like--gets right back up?? How???

And that just about wraps it up! :)

4. grian. he's like the meme of the smug cat surrounded by knives, punching him would be so satisfying but he would hold up a bucket and as i go to punch him my hand would get stuck in the bucket and he would mock me for looking stupid because my hand is stuck in a bucket

5. mumbo. i'd fight him because i know i'd win. he smells like prey

6. tango. he would make very fun noises as i hit him with a brick, he is a very squeaky flavor of man.

7. keralis. he's, like, deceptively good at pvp??? specifically running away???? i'd be running around trying to catch him for like two hours while he occasionally divebombs me and makes vaguely lewd references to my mother. 10/10

8. wels. he'd fight with honor and i would love to beat him with the old pocket sand trick and/or pantsing him

9. iskall. he's a really talented pvp'er and easygoing, i feel like i would have a lot of fun fighting him and learn a lot of stuff. i definitely wouldn't win most of our fights but i'd enjoy them just the same. he seems like a pretty good sport :)

10. false. she's talented and i would like to have a friendly sparring match with her :)

11. pearl. listen she;s a prety lady am i supposed to say "NO miss moon i don't wanna spar you" like??? of course i'll fight her 😳

You want me to out-angst you? Alright. What if there's a cast split to begin S9? Like, a majority of the cast wakes up on the Hermitheus (or whatever the ship was called) and moves on to the new continent. But some others (like Cleo and BDubs, for example) get stuck. Pulled into The Nothing, maybe. And they have to break out themselves/find their own way back.

Hi, first of all: congrats on being the first person to take me up on that. XD

Secondly: THAT'S A FANTASTIC IDEA it's like -- SHADE hey shade??? Can this be Scattered AU: Part 2?

Bdubs would have it really hard -- the man is nothing BUT imagination. Having his creativity stripped from him would leave him an angry confused shell of a man. Cleo... I think she'd be better off. She's still an INTENSELY creative person, but she's also far more pragmatic than Bdubs. She'd have something to fall back on, to keep them alive.

Maybe Tango's there too. Maybe his floating-in-space was how his brain interpreted being swallowed by the Nothing. He'd be middle-ground between the two of them, I think. They're wandering this dark void -- at least they don't need to eat here, and they don't seem to get tired, though Bdubs just desperately wants to sleep it away -- and they come across this huddled figure in a space suit.

"Tango??" Bdubs is incredulous. "I thought you got out!"

The figure moves, and Tango peers out at them blearily. "What? How--how the heck are you guys here???"

Cleo helps him up. "Does it matter? Moon big. Moon fall. We're here. Now we've got to deal with it."

So they wander on, not even sure if they're going in a straight line, occasionally talking, but it's amazing how hard conversation is when your imagination is being eroded away.

And then -- hear me out -- what if the Nothing is where banned players go? The void beyond the void. So the crew is trudging along, and suddenly Bdubs sees a familiar helmeted silhouette in the distance.

"X!" he shouts, and runs forward. But when he gets closer he realizes, it's not Xisuma. It's Evil X.

"Oh," he sniffs. "It's you."

"Thought you escaped with your riches," Cleo accuses. "Left X to deal with your mess."

EX is seated on the not-ground, and they look up with disbelieving eyes. "People!" they exclaim. Then, more scornfully: "Hermits. Did you lot finally make old Xisumavoid upset enough to ban you too?"

"Ban us?" Tango knocks his knuckles against his helmet. "Got a loose circuit board in there, EXy? The moon did this."

"Moon?"

And that's when the crew realizes: this is the real EX -- not the simulated creature created to keep Xisuma distracted and unable to help Ren and Doc fight the virus. This is the EX that was banned back in ye olden seasons. And this EX has no idea about anything derpcoin related or moon connected... they're still fixated on things like "summoning withers" and "trap Xisuma in a chamber and kill him over and over again." You know. The good old villainous ways.

But they're also sad and lonely and have been by themselves for a very long time, so with a glance at each other, Tango and Cleo allow EX to join them, and Bdubs sputters and splutters and protests but finally agrees, on the condition that "I'm not callin' them "Evil X," because that's a stupid name."

"What are you going to call them?" Tango asks, half curious and half amused.

But Bdubs stops. He opens his mouth to say something, but the words don't come. His expression closes. "I... can't think of anything," he grumbles.

And that's when they know it's really starting to get bad.

How do they get out? Who else do they find in this Nothing-place? Who knows. But I'd assume the hermits on the other side realize something's wrong too. Maybe they get to Planet HC-9 and some of the hermits don't wake up. They're in comas, still in their pods. So now the other hermits have to figure out how to reach into the Nothing and save their friends without losing themselves.

...yeah anyway that's certainly a thought.

so I'm working on the next chapter of to Love my Enemy and I've been thinking about adding other Hermitcraft players into Empires as just kinda side characters [like I've done with Bdubs]

but...I'm having a hard time figuring out where they should go. I don't think they'd all show up but my ocd brain is like "you gotta know all this for reasons" and I'm like "okay"

I would really love some input here, whether on the hermits already placed or the ones who don't have a placement yet. I'd really appreciate the help, thanks! :)

this is what I have so far:

the Cod Empire - Bubbles [aka Bdubs] - Jevin: because slime guy, but he'd be more on the outskirts of the empire

the Ocean Empire - Rendog: because of Last Life but idk on this, maybe he'd be in Mezalea? - Iskall: guardian farm in HCs8 but maybe in Mythland instead? idk

Mezalea - Doc: idk, I just want him close to Ren, plus he wanted to live in a coral reef in HCs6 [haven't finished his pov so idk if he ever got to]

Pixandria - TFC: older guy, think him and Pix would get along and bond over chaotic children - Cleo: bees. HCs8 she has bees and HiveDr8

the Overgrown - Stress: kinda naturey vibes but I've only seen a couple videos - Joe Hills: flower fields in HCs8

the Undergrove - Hypno: his base in HCs8 is mushrooms

Gilded Helianthia - XB: horsehead FARMS and he seems like a farmy kinda guy - False: gives me nature vibes, but idk

Rivendell - Zedaph: sheep hybrid, only reason

the Lost Empire / Maztec (gave it this name in Found Family au) - Grian: chaos gremlin with parrot wings

the Crystal Cliffs - Scar: Vex magic, Last Life Wizard - Cub: Vex magic [suggestion from another post]

the Grimlands - Mumbo: redstone, need I say more? - Impulse: redstone but also builder, mostly because he's a demon and a demon would fit well in the Grimlands

Mythland - Etho: assassin vibe, plus he'd be closer to Bdubs [this is relevant]

* and then there's some players that still need placing. any input?

Unknown - Xisuma: maybe Ocean since he's an axolotl in HCs8? - Evil X: idek, he'll be Xisuma's brother so maybe Ocean? - Tango: maybe Lost Empire due to being a bit firey [blaze-esque]? - Keralis: paradise island in the Ocean but what empire would he technically call home? - Welsknight: in a previous post, someone suggested Rivendell and making him a half-elf? - Helsknight: maybe included, idk, haven't really watched Wels' content

so yeah, any input on this would be greatly appreciated! some of these characters are going to be relevant either in to Love my Enemy or other future fics.
