okay finished with season 4, so here are some general thoughts about it.

- Hen and Karen’s plot with fostering was so impactful, and I LOVE that at the end, they got to meet the birth mother. I think Hen needed that.

- Maddie’s struggle with pregnancy, birth, and postpartum depression is SO IMPORTANT. I adore her so much and her crying to Chim at the end of the season broke my heart. Their baby is so beautiful though ❤️

- I was genuinely scared about Bobby & Athena’s secrets and their giant fight. They feel like my parents and I didn’t like that they weren’t communicating 😭 Athena saving Bobby was very badass and made me happy.

- Eddie was…not very straight this season. Not even about Buck (except the part where he literally added Buck to his will. That’s….), but just generally. Him and Ana have very little chemistry, and it was all but confirmed that he’s only really with her because of Christopher. It’s hard for me to see that reasoning as straight? idk, maybe that’s just me being influenced by Buddie.

- I LOVE EVAN BUCKLEY. I love him. I love him. I want him. I need him. I imprinted on him like a baby duck in the first season and it has only gotten worse. If there are no Buck stans, I am dead. (also LOVE Eddie for treating Buck with the love and care HE DESERVES)

- I’ve only known Ravi Panikkar for four episodes (?) and I would already kill for him and die for him. I wish he was a main character. (I would also love to see more Karen 😌)

- The individual storylines of this season hit different. I really loved them

"Stede wanted to be a pirate and now he's not going to be one, which is bad."

Did he really want to be a pirate? Stede wanted to be a storybook pirate; he wanted to be the pirate in his games and his imagination, who had swashbuckling adventures. The entire first season deals with him learning what piracy really is. He sees what it has done to Ed, quite literally history's greatest pirate, within the first half hour of their meeting. Most of the fun he has, has nothing to do with actual piracy - it's playing games with his crew, going on treasure hunts with Ed, putting on plays. He likes making up plans, but he doesn't like actual piracy. When he accidentally kills a man, it horrifies him and haunts him, and continues to until the end of the season. He goes to therapy about it.

Into Season 2, the entire point of Stede's piracy is still not piracy. It's to get back to Ed. Stede's fantasy in the beginning is about being the storybook pirate who defeats the villain and runs across the beach to his one true love, who isn't mad at him and never was. It's a fairytale. And even there, reality is creeping in - dream-Izzy tells him, "I didn't make you leave him. You did that yourself." The reality is that Ed has gone into a suicidal spiral, and Stede finds him mostly dead.

The one time that Stede becomes a "real pirate" in the real world, it goes to his head, but it's not even because of his love of piracy. It's because he's suddenly popular. People are buying him drinks and clapping him on the back. No one's calling him "Steve." No one's making fun of him. And still, the only thing he wants to do when he does something cool is go tell Ed about it.

And even then...it's hollow. Everyone around him are sycophants. Ed has left him. His crew are suddenly leaving him. It all ends with him getting his ass kicked by a real pirate. He didn't even like doing the thing that made him popular; he kills Ned Low and runs off to hide. The whole sequence at Jackie'z is a mirror of the sequence at the pub when he goes home - everyone thinks he's cool, but for none of the reasons that are authentic to who he is or what he really wants.

Stede wanted a family who loved him. He wanted friends who liked him for him. He wanted someone to play with. He wanted to marry for love. And he has all those things at the end.

He's not a pirate. He's not having second thoughts.

I'm not sure why this is hard to see.

sometimes media serves as an example of what NOT to do. now i say this thinking about a streamer committing too much time to an impossible task when he has more important things to do but genuinely this goes for a lot of media and people need to remember that

#people saying 'oh this character is a bad example' maybe that's the point. #a lot of the time a creator will write with the intention of saying 'hey see this? don't do this.' but you cant expect them to just SAY tha #a good writer's not gonna take the consumer aside and say that Thing Bad. it circles back to showing not telling #if the character doing Bad Thing ends up facing consequences for their actions it's safe to say that the author thinks Thing Bad! #i have ocs who smoke but i would never smoke myself nor encourage others to. eventually these ocs quit smoking late in the narrative #but one of them has to realize how his smoking negatively affects his relationships before he makes the decision to quit #for a majority of the story he happily smokes and sees nothing wrong with it nor does the rest of the main cast say much abt it #a lot of the ocs in this story are bad examples one way or another. in fact one is an abuser but he eventually gets what he deserves #a person could create bigoted characters that may not even be antagonists but that does not mean they themself are bigoted #it's important to look at the writing surrounding a character before claiming the creator is glorifying or supports the character's actions #but apparently some people just dont do that i guess! like idk ive heard things #if i were to write a story about queerness it would NOT be happy feel-good everyone is supportive rainbow utopia. there WOULD be queerphobe #simply because i want to reflect my experience. would the queerphobes change? probably not! doesnt mean i agree with them #whoopsie i went on a tangent. didnt even mean to haha
