I think if you tried to like force me to say something bad about Lan Wangji I would just burst into tears. Even thinking about making a post jokingly roasting him makes me feel bad.

ON GHOSTS AND DEMONS: Wei Wuxian's "demonic" cultivation?
There are a few big misconceptions I have repeatedly seen in English-speaking fandom about things that are fundamental to the story of MDZS. One of them is this—
Wei Wuxian is not a demonic cultivator.
To prove this, let's take a deep dive into the original Chinese text of MDZS.
(Adapted from my original gdoc posted on Twitter on May 27, 2022. All translations my own unless otherwise stated.)
Demon vs. ghost
Let's start from the very basics. In addition to orthodox cultivation using spiritual energy and a golden core, there are two other forms of cultivation that are mentioned in the novel:
魔道 (mó dào), or “demon cultivation/path.”
鬼道 (guǐ dào), or “ghost cultivation/path.”
To be clear, 魔 mo "demons" and 鬼 gui "ghosts" (and thus their respective cultivation/paths) are not interchangeable because of the in-universe worldbuilding within MDZS. Using the characters in the term 妖魔鬼怪 "monsters," MXTX created four distinct categories of beings, each of which has a strict definition in the novel. From chapter 4 (jjwxc ch 13):
妖者非人之活物所化; 魔者生人所化; 鬼者死者所化; 怪者非人之死物所化。 Yāo (妖) are transformed from non-human living beings; mó (魔) are transformed from living people; guǐ (鬼) are transformed from the deceased; guài (怪) are transformed from non-human dead beings.
Tumblr media
And of course, WWX hoards all the ghost-type pokemon monsters at the Phoenix Mountain tournament, and he only exerts control over corpses, spirits, and the like (aka people who have already died). (As opposed to Xue Yang, who appears to have been actively trying to make 魔 "demons" out of living people with those "living corpses" of his, perhaps.) (And, ironically, in order to avoid showing necromancy / zombies on screen, CQL technically does show WWX practicing demon cultivation because everyone is "supposedly alive" even when they're corpses? Which is, funnily enough, far worse morally in the MDZS universe, lol.)
So, intuitively at least, we know that WWX must be practicing ghost cultivation—now let's look at some concrete examples from the book.
Running the numbers
1) 魔道 (mó dào) means “demon cultivation.” As such, it must use living humans.
魔道 appears one (1) time in the novel.
Yes, once. The only time it appears is in the term 魔道祖师 modao zushi, or the namesake of the novel, in chapter 2. This is a title the general public has given him through rumors:
魏无羡好歹也被人叫了这么多年无上邪尊啦、魔道祖师啦之类的称号,这种一看就知道不是什么好东西的阵法,他自然了如指掌。 Wei Wuxian wasn’t called titles like “The Evil Overlord,” “The Founder of Demon Cultivation,” and so on over the years by others for nothing—he knew these sorts of obviously shady formations like the back of his hand.
2) 鬼道 (guǐ dào) means “ghost cultivation.” As such, it must use dead humans.
鬼道 appears 12 times in the novel.
Here is the first instance that 鬼道 appears, which I believe is the first time Wei Wuxian's method of cultivation is properly introduced. From chapter 3 (jjwxc ch 8):
蓝忘机 […] 对魏无羡修鬼道一事极不认可。 Lan Wangji […] had never approved of the fact that Wei Wuxian practiced ghost cultivation.
Tumblr media
Here's another quote from chapter 15 (jjwxc ch 71) for funsies:
蓝忘机看着他,似乎一眼就看出他只是随口敷衍,吸了一口气,道:“魏婴。” Lan Wangji looked at him as if he saw through his half-hearted bluff. He took in a breath, then said, “Wei Ying.” 他执拗地道:“鬼道损身,损心性。” He stubbornly continued, “Ghost cultivation harms one’s body, and harms one’s nature.”
3) 邪魔歪道 (xiemowaidao) means heretical path/immoral methods/evil practices/underhanded means/etc—e.g., lying, cheating, stealing, bribery, and so on.
It appears ~24 times in the novel.
I mention this last term because it is often used to refer to Wei Wuxian's cultivation, but as a pejorative. Every instance of 邪魔歪道 is said by or to quote someone looking down upon Wei Wuxian’s cultivation (Jin Zixun, Jin Ling, etc.) and referring to it derogatorily, whereas every instance of 鬼道 guidao/ghost dao is said by someone discussing it neutrally and/or factually (Lan Jingyi, Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian himself, random cultivators at discussion conferences, the narration, etc.). Here is a pertinent example with Jin Ling (derogatory) and Lan Jingyi (neutral) in chapter 9 (jjwxc ch 43):
金凌怒道:“是在谈论薛洋,我说的不对吗?薛洋干了什么?他是个禽兽不如的人渣,魏婴比他更让人恶心!什么叫‘不能一概而论’?这种邪魔歪道留在世上就是祸害,就是该统统都杀光,死光,灭绝!” “We are discussing Xue Yang,” Jin Ling said angrily. “Am I wrong? What did Xue Yang do? He’s scum that’s lower than a beast, and Wei Ying is even more disgusting than him! What do you mean ‘don’t make sweeping generalizations?’ As long as those practicing this kind of demoniac, heretical path are alive, they’ll continue to bring disaster. We should slaughter all of them, kill all of them, annihilate them once and for all!” Wen Ning shuffled around. Wei Wuxian gestured at him to stay still, only to hear Lan Jingyi also cut in loudly, “Why are you getting so riled up? It’s not like Sizhui said Wei Wuxian shouldn’t have been killed. All he said was that people who practice ghost cultivation aren’t necessarily all like Xue Yang. Do you have to go around breaking things? I didn’t even get to eat any of that yet…”
Tl;dr—Wei Wuxian does not 修魔道 practice demon cultivation. When Wei Wuxian’s craft is discussed in a neutral and factual manner, it is referred to as 鬼道 ghost dao.
In fact, Wei Wuxian’s imitators are also referred to explicitly as 鬼道修士 ghost cultivators.
魏无羡早就听说过,这些年来江澄到处抓疑似夺舍重生的鬼道修士,把这些人通通押回莲花坞严刑拷打。 Wei Wuxian had heard a while back that over the past few years, Jiang Cheng had gone around snatching any ghost cultivator suspected of being possessed or reborn, detaining them in Lotus Pier to interrogate them using torture.
So why the confusion?
Of course, there is the matter of the novel's title, which I will get into in a second. But the real issue is a matter of translation.
The idea that WWX uses "demonic cultivation" is a misconception in English-speaking fandom due to issues with the translation of terminology. Of note, EXR actually did translate 鬼道 guidao as "ghostly path" most of the time, though there were at least 3 instances of "demonic" and 1 instance of "dark," especially regarding the first few.
However, this misconception was perpetuated (and arguably worsened) by 7S's official translation, which not only mistranslated additional terms as "demonic cultivation/path" (at least in book 1), but also consistently mistranslated every instance of 鬼道 as "demonic cultivation/path."
So why is this book called 魔道祖师, commonly translated as "Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation?"
One possibility is one posed in Chinese-language meta online, which often cites that WWX himself is a sort of 魔 demon. While this may be true—after all, he can hear the voices of the dead—it doesn't quite explain the fact that the title sets him up to be the 祖师 or "founder."
My take is that this novel is very much concerned with hearsay vs. truth. This is one of the many monikers WWX is given by the public, who collectively view him as evil. (Also of note is that the non-cultivator public is not aware of all the nuances that cultivators learn re: distinctions between the 妖魔鬼怪 monsters.) In the quote from earlier, note that the first title we're given is actually 无上邪尊 “The Evil Overlord,” then 魔道祖师 "The Founder of Demon Cultivation." Like, what can that be other than MXTX telling us, "please take both of these with a HUGE grain of salt, lol."
(And not only the title, but the very first line—"魏无羡死了。" / "Wei Wuxian is dead."—is a lie.)
I think the title is genius, honestly. It intentionally makes readers come into the novel with preconceived notions that Wei Wuxian practices 魔道 demon cultivation and evil techniques—just like the public in the novel. What better way to tell a story warning about the dangers of how easy it is to fall for misinformation and jump to incorrect conclusions?
(Though, in our case, perhaps it worked a little too well.)

teenage lan wangji really is soooooo pathetic (affectionate).... his entire world turned upside down by this loud obnoxious smart handsome annoying boy...... he wants to hate wei wuxian SO badly but he just can't do it. he's desperately lying awake at night reciting the wall of discipline and staving off mental images of wei ying's smile like "i hope this doesn't awaken anything in me" but it's too late because Everything has been awakened and it's already altered the entire trajectory of his life. good luck lan wangji

Mdzs modern au where Wei Wuxian is Wen Qing's beard. So the situation goes like this, Wen Qing has a rich uncle that pays for her education on the condition that she gets good grades and shit, when she got into med school Wen Chao, that bitch, let it slip to his dad that Wen Qing was a lesbian, in order to secure her bag she told her uncle that he was lying and that she actually had a boyfriend, of course her uncle then wanted to meet said boyfriend and then enters Wei Ying, Wen Ning's best friend and the perfect man for the job. Unlike most fake dating AUs this one doesn't end up with them together, it ends with Wen Qing graduating then finding out that her uncle didn't care that she was gay, bro has had gay sex himself so he can see the appeal, and Wei Wuxian eloping with Lan Wangji (who may or may not have been praying on that relationship's downfall since day one), everyone is happy except Wen Chao

1. For fic finder: Instead of the Sunshot Campaign it is the western vs eastern clans who war. WWX and LWJ are on opposite sides but they recognize each other as honorable. At one point they work together to stop a village from getting flooded/some natural disaster. After the war I think LWJ asks for WWX as a war prize? Thank you!

2. Hello! I hope you can help me find this fic.
All I can remember is that it is a Post canon married life wherein wwx and lwj get into a huge fight (love quarrel). I think the fight was about wwx safety (lwj getting mad and so on)

3. Hey, I would like to find a fanfic from the MDZS fandom that I once read on ao3. It was about how Jiang Cheng almost strangled Wei Wuxian after the lotus pier fell. He didn't help him, he just left him. He told others that Wei Wuxian was dead and did not admit to his actions. Lan Wangji then went to look for Wei Wuxian. He found him lying in the forest and thought he was dead. However, it turned out that the boy was still alive, but barely. He came back with him and I think that's when the truth came out and Gusu Lan became very protective of Wei Wuxian. I don't remember if it was a completed fanfic. Thank you in advance for helping me with my search. @braveavocadosstuff

It was about a typical straight girl wei ying never org/asming, and so wen qing and mianmian set her up with well known lesbian icon Lan Zhan. 5. Hi! Thank you so much for all you do. Could you help me relocate this fic in which wwx finds out that instead of QHJ, the twin jades were actually conceived by other elders that broke their mother's seclusion so wwx takes revenge on their and their mothers behalf and puts the fear of well, himself, into those assholes? I can't remember what it was called but I feel like it was from LQRs pov (could be wrong tho). Thank you!!

9. Very good, I love your content and I wanted to know if you or your followers could help me find some fanfic.
A) -I remember that a wangxian is about demons and angels where both sides are in conflict and lan wangji along with his brother his brother are the heirs of the angels and wei wuxian is the heir of the demons a succubus if not wrong and Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian meet in the human world and fall in love even though their families are enemies.
B) - I don't remember if it was a modern Lan Zhan or Wang Jibo but it is about her traveling to the universe of ancient Mo Dao Zu Shi as Lan Wangji, second heir of Gusu Lan and how the world changes and her relationship with Wei Wuxian with her presence. and the decisions he makes, although I don't remember if he knows what world he is in or if he doesn't know what world he is in or if he was a wangxian or xianwang, that would be what I remember and it's a bit vague, sorry.
C) -and the last one is about the characters in mo dao zu shi are trapped in a room or it was a barrier well the thing is that they don't know why and they are made to see what a future would be like where lan wangji is the one who manages the resentful energy and what's more he is a xianwang.

B.) I remember LWJ travel back in time and ask people in gusu that he’ll stay there until his husband fetch him. I also remember young lwj getting jealous because young wwx is close to old lwj
C.) About juniors where in I think they are in a night hunt. I remember LSZ doesn’t want to remove his robe when injured because he doesn’t want the juniors especially jin ling that he is a wen and had the burned mark logo on his chest.
D.) Married wangxian wherein there is a Clan (full of girls) who are homophobics that needed their help. I only remember a scene where wwx got jealous and very angry because the girl from that clan keeps trying to steal LWJ from him.
E.) I remember people got wwx journal and reads it. And found out what his conditions and the whens. I also remember there is a page in wwx journal filled with Blood and really bad handwriting (i think it was the last page)

18. Apologies for dropping this in right after you've posted a fic finder. I'm looking for two fics.
A) The first is where Lan Wangji, having learned Wei Wuxian has lost his core, uses an old technique that allows him to grow a second golden core (the idea being the user would absorb the second to make the original stronger), so he can donate one golden core to Wei Wuxian.
B) The second is where Wei Wuxian has been cursed or enchanted in some way that he can't remember Lan Wangji, who enters the Burial Mounds disguised as a new Wen so he can get to the bottom of it with the other Wens helping him in the ruse. There's a scene close to the end where he comes across Wei Wuxian being wooed by someone (think it was Su She) wearing his Wen disguise. It leads to a confrontation where Wei Wuxian tries to defend the false Lan Wangji against the real one and it leads to the spell breaking.
Thank you, and again, apologies for the poor timing!

I am looking for a fic I’m 90% I found on y’all’s blog and I meant to bookmark it for later and I didn’t and so now it is lost. 😔. But the summary was something like a negotiation between WWX and LWG and WWX makes a joke that goes along the lines of “well if you want nothing else then I’ll have to offer you my body.” And then LWG’s eyes like darken or something and WWX is like “oh you do want that.”
I hope this is enough and makes sense.

20. Hey :), I'm just trying to find an all old fic where Wei Wuxian didn't get torn to pieces and instead ended up immortalised. I half suspect that it was removed from ao3 but the details are as follows: wwx 'dies' but is found breathing, the cultivation world examines his body and finds him at gates of immortality essentially.
At this point JC figures out the core thing because they build a shrine for him and bring suiban (still sealed but he can remove it) and LQR does too (independently examing the body). When demonic cultivation starts being a problem again LQR starts a rumour that they need to "fight fire with fire' and efforts begin after 13 years to resurect Wei Ying. He wakes up mad, storms into a conference and LWJ follows him out when he storms out. He bumps into Jingyi at the koi tower steps, later down the line adopts Mo XuanYi from the Mo village (joking that his name is stranger isntead of saying hes the YLZ), end up wearing lwj overrobe at one point and finally once again travelling with LY and LJY.
Plot really picks up when they enter the town which was affected by the demonic cultivation. It is deserted, but they encounter the being that tormented him in the burial mound, XY, and other new-immortals. Its revelead immortality is gained through suffering like WWX had and he's forced to accept a demonic core to save JC and JL. He dies once again in Gusu but LWJ keeps pooling qi into him, which makes his resurrection faster.
I'll stop here cause this is getting a bit long, but I hope this is enough for you to help me find the fic. THANK U SO MUCH! @geminimind05

Lan Zhan sits at the table, grading a stack of papers, while Wei Ying does the same, sprawled across their bed.
"Say, Lan Zhan, I have a curiosity."
"Mn?"
"Back then, when I was studying here and you kept making me write rules, did you think any of that would work and I'd eventually become disciplined?"
Lan Zhan puts his brush down, closes his eyes and sighs.
Wei Ying laughs. "Come on, you have to tell me. And you'd better tell me the truth, lying is forbidden in the Cloud Recesses!"
Lan Zhan sighs, again. He definitely should not be answering that.
He does.
"No. I did not think writing rules would discipline you. Shufu did not either."
"Then why make me do it?" A wink. "Just so you'd have an excuse to spend time with me?"
Lan Zhan picks up his brush and hides his gaze behind his long strands of hair. The tips of his ears are turning pink.
"Wait, are you serious?! That's why-"
"Quiet." Lan Zhan says, without any bite to it.
"Absolutely not! So you liked spending time with me! It wasn't punishment at all!"
"It was... part of it."
"Part?! Lan Zhan, you really had a crush on me!" Wei Ying is laughing so hard, teardrops have formed in the corner of his eyes. "How did you, the biggest fuddy-duddy in existence, deal with that?"
I did not, Lan Zhan wants to say, half bitter, half amused.
He settles on... "It was... difficult."
That only serves to make Wei Ying laugh harder and Lan Zhan knows he's about to fall off the bed if he rolls any more. "You! You had a crush on me!"
Lan Zhan is quick to catch Wei Ying as he is about to slide off the bedspread onto the floor.
"Wei Ying. We are married. Of course I've had a crush on you."
"Well, Lan Zhan, you didn't make it very obvious, I can tell you that-"
Lan Zhan decides to silence his husband with a kiss (the same way he wished to do when they were 15 in the Library Pavilion).
"Is it obvious now, Wei Ying?"
"I don't know," he answers, breathless, "kiss me more so I can make up my mind."

Something is wrong with A-Zhan! [EXTRA]
A-Zhan really did throw himself to the ground, pouting and wailing and weeping, and refused to go back home without his Wei Ying. Lan Qiren never felt this embarrassed in his life! Even Lan Huan and Wei Ying seemed clueless as to what to do.
“A-Zhan, stop this and let’s go home.” Lan Qiren tried to speak calmly, he really did. It was just really hard with almost everyone looking at him with pity and annoyance.
“NO! WANT WEI YING!! MINE!”
Lan Qiren almost popped a vein.
“Ah. Lan Zhan, don’t cry. A-Ying can just stay here. Please don’t cry.” The child this tantrum was over, Wei Ying, tried consoling A-Zhan.
“NO! Go home with Wei Ying or not!” Never in his life had Lan Qiren thought that Cangse’s child would be better behaved than his precious nephew whom he raised with only the best of himself and his sect.
“A-Zhan, be reasonable.”
“No! Want Wei Ying! Shufu said to get what A-Zhan likes! Lying is forbidden! Breaking promises is forbidden!”
Lan Qiren really did dig his grave by not thinking of the loophole in his words. Yet, who could have thought that A-Zhan would take such a sudden liking to a street child, much less the child of Cangse Sanren?!
As A-Zhan kept wailing on, with his brother and his Wei Ying trying to get him to calm down, a crowd of people gathered, whispering about how badly the child was crying and how the ‘father’ was inadequate.
As much as Lan Qiren wanted to tell them that he was not the ‘father’, but rather their uncle, he also wanted this to be over as soon as possible.
“Okay, A-Zhan. We’ll take Wei Ying home with us.” ‘Now stop your tantrum and get going!’
The speed at which A-Zhan brightened and stopped crying was phenomenal.
He immediately attached himself to Wei Ying, who didn’t seem to mind the clinginess and walked ahead of Lan Qiren and Lan Huan.
“Let’s go, shufu, it’s time for dinner. We need to get new clothes too. Wei Ying, wear my clothes until then.” A-Zhan rambled about getting this and that for Wei Ying as Lan Qiren stared at the two kids’ backs.
“A-Huan, since when did your brother become so eloquent?”
“I’m afraid I don’t know either, shufu.”
“Let’s hope I don’t regret this.”
This is an extra from this fic of mine. Set right after chapter 1- arriving with two, leaving with three.

The Truth
Lan Wangji never lies. He is a Lan. Lans don't lie. Ergo, he doesn't lie. Yes, that covers white lies, half-truths, and lying by omissions.
So when Papa asks him who loves him the most, he says, "Shufu!" even though that makes Mama's smile a dim and Papa's smile disappear completely. When aunties in their Sunday bests coo around him and pinch his cheeks, he points out the boy with mercury eyes as the prettiest among them, much to their scandalous whispers. When xiongzhang looks at him hopefully, silently begging for support, he again shakes his head and speaks the truth, " He will break your heart!" He knows he was speaking the truth when he promised to love and cherish until death did them apart. And he spoke the truth when he introduced A-Yuan as his own.
So it troubles him to lie with a bare face. But he guesses the moralities in your 30s differ vastly from that of your teens. So he has to taste the empty cup a hopeful Jin Ling passes to him and tell him the imaginary tea is indeed the best he ever had! He lies to Wei Ying that, of course, his knee has healed, and he can carry the grocery and A-Yuan and tries his best not to limp. And now that he's kneeling on his pristine living room carpet, sprinkling soot and flour in front of the fireplace and using a ratty pair of boots to make footprints, while his husband takes hasty bites off the cookie A-Yuan very thoughtfully left out for Santa and takes a sip from the glass of milk, he hopes the Lan ancestors will somehow be able to forgive him. After all, they, too, were parents once.

Modern au where lwj's washing machine breaks so he has to go to the laundromat down the street and he meets wwx, the hot guy in his class, and wwx is chatting but lwj can't hear a word he's saying bc on top of wwx's basket of clean laundry is a bright red lace thong. And wwx keeps chatting away but lwj's eyes are just. Zeroed in on this scarlet, lace thong, lying on top of a pair of basketball shorts a graphic tee. And listen, normally lwj is a decent man. If this was quite literally anybody else he would have averted his eyes and carried on with the convo until he could hurry away back to his room. But this is Wei Ying. The super hot goth jock from his chinese lit class. The guy who sidled up to lwj first day of class and said, "hey, ur stupid fuckin hot, what was the reading for today?" Lwj is kinda obsessed with him. He might be kind of obsessed with this red lace thong too.
After wwx finishes collecting his laundry, he says his goodbyes and heads out. Lwj sits in the laundromat and puts his head in his hands.
Wwx gets back to his shitty apartment and immediately sees the thong lying smack dab on top of his laundry basket.
Come ten minutes later, he's still rolling around on the floor screaming with embarrassment.

Something is wrong with A-Zhan!
By:HeloSoph
Summary:
Something is very wrong with Lan Xichen's younger brother.
First, he didn't wake up at his usual time.
Then, when he did wake up, he called him xiongzhang.
And as if that wasn't enough, he hugged him!
A-Zhan, the boy who hates physical contact since their mother's passing, hugged his brother on his own accord!
And as if the day couldn't get weirder-
“A-Zhan.”
“Yes, shufu.”
“What did shufu say before he let you and your dada go?”
“To get something we like.”
“And what did A-Zhan do?”
“A-Zhan likes Wei Ying.”
Lan Qiren’s eye twitched again.
OR: Lan Wangji time travels and decides to change everything.
Chapter:6/6
Words:15,306
Status:completed
(Dark lan wangji)
Like he killed everyone in the first time line 🫡
Wei Ying is Lan Qiren's cabbage
If what Nie Huaisang had written had even a semblance of truth, he won’t have to worry about his injured back soon. And as long as he does as instructed in the letter, he will be with Wei Ying soon, too. If not, he’ll just kill Nie Huaisang too. After all, lying is forbidden. And lying to him about Wei Ying– giving him false hope – is even more unforgivable.
~~
For he knows that Jiang Wanyin did blame his Wei Ying for the deaths of his family and sect members, as if Wei Ying didn’t lose the same people too. He hadn’t been able to intervene back then, not with the war blowing in all their faces. One man’s bitterness was of little insignificance. But now, Lan Wangji will make sure that the Jiang Sect Leader pays for everything. In full. He is the paragon of righteousness. His bitterness, after all, is not insignificant. It is righteous. It is justice. He is justice.
~~~
It looked lived in. But that can’t be true. His zhiji, his bright and cheerful, full of energy Wei Ying was long dead. Even before his death, this was not the room he lived in. ‘This lying bastard,’ Lan Wangji’s eyes turned cold as he looked at Jiang Wanyin and fixated on the bead of cold sweat that left from his hairline and threatened to fall in his eyes. He should gouge those eyes out, Lan Wangji absentmindedly made a note to himself. “I’ll take everything that belongs to my zhiji, and I’ll start with that golden core. Who gave you the right to use it, you bastard?”
~~
In Qinghe, Nie Huaisang felt a severe headache for a week. When his headache subsided and he woke up, it was to his brother by his bedside, fretting over him. ‘Lan Wangji’s love for Wei-xiong is no joke.’
~~
“You!” He got up and pointed at Lan Wangji, shaking with rage. Lan Wangji looked at him with a crazed look in his eyes, “Stop pointing those fingers at me unless you want them broken.” “Lan Zhan, that’s not a nice thing to say.” Wei Wuxian held Lan Wangji’s face in his hands and gently reprimanded him as if he were a misbehaving toddler, not a man fully capable of– and intending to– causing bodily harm to the Jiang Sect Heir. “Wei Ying..” Wei Wuxian understood that Lan Zhan was not sorry, so he didn’t push. He simply kissed his forehead, right on his sacred ribbon, “I’ll wait at Jingshi, come back quickly, hmm?” “Mn.” Having gotten his answer, Wei Wuxian collected his stuff and went back to his shared residence with Lan Wangji to wait for his zhiji to be done here. Lan Zhan never liked Wei Ying seeing him when he got like this. He claimed that Wei Ying might not like him anymore if he saw him like this. Wei Wuxian claimed that he would love him anyway. In the end, just to reassure Lan Zhan, Wei Wuxian always listened, not wanting to see his zhiji unhappy or in doubt even for a single moment. With Wei Wuxian gone, the room’s temperature somehow fell even lower. And this time, Jiang Wanyin noticed too. Everyone stood frozen in their place as Lan Wangji effortlessly grabbed the Jiang Sect Heir by the throat and lifted him in air, the boy’s feet dangling in the air as he tried and failed to pry the strong hand away from his throat. As the boy’s face started turning the same colour as the nine-petalled lotus embroidery on his shoulders, Lan Wangji spoke, “I hear another word about my fiance from your mouth, your corpse will greet your family when you leave here. Do I make myself clear?” The Jiang boy struggled against Lan Wangji’s steady hold for some time until his vision blurred. It was only after his vision started spotting that he made an attempt to nod. He was thrown to the ground like discarded trash after Lan Wangji decided his answer was acceptable. For now. As Lan Wangji left and the Jiang Sect Heir choked on the ground, coughing up a storm, the rest of the guest disciples still stood frozen in their place.
Threads of Love
by OnlyMeAndMyBones (@galexibrain)
M, WIP, 61k, Wangxian
Summary: Thirteen years ago, Lan Zhan came to Germany to study classical music and found his first true friend. Ten years ago he returned to Shanghai, heartbroken after a horrifying accident left Wei Ying with life-changing injuries and destroyed their friendship and budding romance. Today, he comes back to Germany - to teach, not to study. But when he and Wei Ying meet again by sheer chance, he realizes he has much to learn after all. (The main story is complete with chapter eight - additional oneshots may be added in the future) Kay's comments: This story is such a delight, because I love modern AUs but I'm so tired of modern AUs set in America. Instead, this story is set in Germany! It's also just a very lovely story that I really enjoyed a lot. There's many parallels to canon and Lexi wrote that the Golden Core transfer inspired this story, since the loss of a Golden Core can be seen as a disability. Wangxian here meet again after ten years apart, both struggling with different things and I really liked how they reconnected and Lan Wangji's POV was just a huge treat. Also a story for fans of Yunmeng Siblings love. Main story is complete, but marked as incomplete. Excerpt: The door opens. “Sorry for the delay I hope you didn’t wait too-” They stare at each other in shock, Lan Zhan and the man at the door. He has long hair, tied back with a crimson red scrunchie. He is wearing dark blue pants and a matching shirt with a stethoscope hanging around his neck. Lan Zhan still knows this face like his own. It has lost something of its adolescent softness over the past ten years but it retained a youthful glow, making the man look more like in his twenties than his early thirties. Doctor Vay is the first one to regain his speech. “Hello, Lan Zhan,” he whispers in Mandarin, looking down at the file lying in his lap and humming with distracted amusement. “Heh. Shawn Lan. I should have known.” Then, he comes in and closes the door behind him. Lan Zhan’s voice has left him. Suddenly he seems to have forgotten each of the languages he knows. His tongue is glued to his teeth and he knows he looks like a fool, standing there with his lips parted.
pov lan wangji, modern setting, modern no powers, disability, disabled character, disabled wei wuxian, angst with a happy ending, flashbacks, ableism, racism, medical procedures, lan wangji/wei wuxian get a happy ending, sharing a bed, doctor wei wuxian, musician lan wangji, teacher lan wangji, yunmeng siblings feels, good sibling jiang cheng, minor or backgroudn relationships, qin su/lan xichen, blood and injury
one of my brain worms for Wei Wuxian birthday is an AU where wangxian immigrated to the US west coast so 10/31 begins at 9am PST on 10/30.
Which Lan Zhan uses as an excuse to spend two days celebrating his Wei Ying's bday.
He and A-Yuan prepare breakfast ind bed and greet Wei Ying at exactly 9am when midnight hits in China.
And then the proceed to pamper Wei Ying for the next two days straight, to the point where he's in a permanent state of blushing.
A-Yuan makes him a bazillion drawing while Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng keep showing up to shower him with gifts and soup (though JC pretends he just happens to have these lying around).
And Lan Zhan gives Wei Ying lots of kisses.
Wei Ying never forgets Halloween with it being his favorite holiday, but every year he forgets 10/30 at 9am. And every year he's greeted with bunny shaped pancakes and so many kisses and hugs from his favorite people he feels himself about to burst with the love his family give to him
Title: cut my tongue on the rust of a silver spoon
Summary: Lan Wangji is his father’s son, he marries Wei Wuxian to protect him. He is his mother’s too, he dies as a consequence of his punishment. Thirteen years later, summoned into a foreign body, he returns to Gusu hoping to find Wei Ying and, perhaps, forgiveness.
AN: this is really more of a snippet.
When Mo Xuanyu’s family is laid to rest, Lan Wangji surveys the mansion. He takes what he deems worthwhile and dresses in robes more comfortable than Mo Xuanyu’s. He’s slightly shorter than Lan Wangji used to be and his body is in an ill state. Brushing out his hair leaves him with several strands in his hand. He manages to wrangle it into something respectable. When he leaves the mansion, he finds the Gusu Lan disciples staring at him in open awe.
“You’re really not a lunatic, are you?” Lan Jingyi asks.
“No.”
Lan Sizhui stays silent as he’s been throughout this entire assignment before he lifts his hands in curious motions, Lan Jingyi immediately picking up on them. Lan Jingyi eyes Lan Wangji warily, but then begins to speak. “Sizhui is asking why your family was so insistent you were mad then?”
Was the other boy incapable of speech? Lan Wangji thinks about asking, but deems it rude and unnecessary. The boy has performed admirably on the nighthunt and hadn’t been a liability. If he lacks speech, it speaks well of the education he has received.
“They didn’t like my mother or me. Ensuring everyone knew of unstable Mo Xuanyu meant no one would consider me for inheritance.”
That is Lan Wangji’s assumption at least. Mo Xuanyu’s ritual seemed like something out of Wei Ying’s notes and given that is a problem in and of itself. He’s been dead for over a decade and in the Cloud Recesses, Wei Ying should have been safe and his notes inaccessible to anyone.
Another reason Lan Wangji had to hurry back to the Cloud Recesses.
Lan Sizhui signs again and Lan Jingyi speaks, “We are sorry to hear that. There will be no such discrimination at the Cloud Recesses, I promise.”
There will not? Lan Wangji wonders what happened to his sects in the aftermath of his death, if they are less torn in their decisions nowadays.
“Thank you.”
Traveling with Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi is pleasant. Lan Wangji has no sword, but Lan Sizhui carries him on his own for large chunks of the travel. While in flight, they sign to each other more or less non-stop, having a conversation Lan Wangji cannot follow but finds practical. Every sect has a few hand signs for flight to communicate in an emergency as screaming at each other over the wind is just impossible, but nothing quite this advanced.
It does, however, take a run-in with a yao, Lan Sizhui’s fingers sustaining breaks, before the two Juniors exchange looks and pull a talisman from their pockets.
“You can’t tell anyone about this,” says Lan Jingyi. “You saved us, so I trust you’re a good guy.”
Lan Wangji nods, promising nothing. If they’re up to mischief, someone should know. Instead, Lan Sizhui activates the talisman with a light touch and keeps one hand on it.
Thank you, appears in light blue lettering.
“It’s more convenient for me to communicate with others like this if they’re capable of reading instead of relying on Jingyi,” says Lan Sizhui’s writing.
The technique is not a sect secret as far as Lan Wangji knows. At least it wasn’t when he was still alive.
“Are outsiders not meant to know?” he asks.
“Nobody is,” Lan Sizhui answers. “My father developed the talisman for me. Only Jingyi knows.”
“I think Sect Leader Lan suspects,” Lan Jingyi adds. “But as long as he doesn’t say anything about it, we’re not saying anything either. It’s not lying and we didn’t break any rules.”
Lan Sizhui grimaces. “We do break them a little. A-Die isn’t meant to write any talismans.”
“He isn’t supposed to write anything at all,” Lan Jingyi shoots back, sounding like he’s had this argument a thousand times before. “I don’t get it, it’s been ages. All he does is wait for you to visit, cook, garden, and have tea with Sect Leader Lan. He doesn’t even have a core to cultivate, why does everyone—”
Lan Sizhui shoves his elbow into Lan Jingyi’s side, giving him a very pointed look.
“… I’m sorry, Senior Mo,” Lan Jingyi says. “I didn’t mean to speak so out of tune. We should reach home in two days.”
Lan Wangji inclines his head.
Lan Xichen, libra extraordinaire, has never made a decision in his life.
He's been trained to, of course, but only in an official capacity. His uncle once told him to only make decisions after gathering sufficient information, and that has since become the most important rule in his life. This means he's great at mediating conflict, hosting banquets, and making executive decisions like which village gets more rice and what policies he should enact, but he never knows what to eat for dinner and what to do during his free time.
Lan Wangji, neurodivergent/autistic icon, is the complete opposite. He's a picky perfectionist with a strict daily routine, which no one ever interrupts because why should they? It's just Wangji being Wangji. And, in fact, everyone should strive to be like him. Perhaps if he grew up somewhere rowdier like Lotus Pier or the Unclean Realm then someone would finagle him into being spontaneous, but this is the Cloud Recesses. Of course nobody bothered him until Wei Wuxian came along and turned his world upside down.
Before Wei Wuxian, though, there was Lan Xichen. He stops by the Jingshi often, not because he is concerned for his antisocial little brother (well, maybe just a little), but because he gets so bored sometimes and he never knows what to do. Whenever Uncle is busy, little Xichen likes to find little Wangji and follow his routine with him. Can I join you as you meditate, he asks, and can I eat dinner with you? What do you suggest I do after lectures tomorrow? The other day I took your advice and made a painting, do you wanna see it? Can you pick a book out of this pile for me to read first? I can't seem to decide.
This is why Lan Xichen gets along so well with people. He goes along with things, lets people make decisions for him, and genuinely enjoys it. He earns the trust of the skeptical people without even trying to, just because he lets them pick which wine to order at the inn and what day they should go on a night hunt. You might think it's quite counterintuitive for an all-important sect leader to be this indecisive, but it worked out for the majority of his life. Just like how he chooses to believe in the good in people, people also believe in the good in him.
These days, though, Lan Xichen is reconsidering his behavior. As weeks turn into months turn into years, he stares out the windows of the Hanshi and wonders: Would everything turn out differently if he made more decisions based on instinct? Who can he even trust anymore? Would Nie Mingjue still be alive today, if he didn't force him and A-Yao to become sworn brothers? Would A-Yao still be alive today, if he listened to Wangji and Wei-gongzi's warning sooner? All the people who tell him he did nothing wrong must be lying. How can nothing be his fault?
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Cloud Recesses, Lan Wangji adds more items to his routine. With Lan Xichen in seclusion, he's busy now. He teaches and he nighthunts and he sits through meetings and he spends time with Wei Ying. He also visits his brother. He drops by the Hanshi every three days and says, can I join you as you meditate, and can I eat dinner with you? What do you suggest I do after lectures tomorrow? The other day I took your advice and wrote a new song, do you wanna hear it? Can you pick a book out of this pile for me to read first? I can't seem to decide.
Lan Zhan hated him.
Lan Zhan hated him and his stupid smile, his long hair and his grey eyes and the way his eyes lit up when he was excited and—
And the way he was looking at him right now, guilty, sad, upset.
"No," Lan Zhan affirmed, gritting his teeth as he tried not to cry.
"Lan Zhan," Wei Ying sounded tired, of all things, and he suddenly looked much different from the happy-go-lucky disciple he had been when they first met. "Lan Zhan, you have to understand."
"Then make me understand, please," Lan Zhan continued in that calm tone, looking directly into Wei Ying's eyes as the latter tried to look away. "I don't understand why you have to do things that hurt you all the time. I don't understand why you have to leave. Make me understand, give me something to work with here."
"Lan Zhan, I can't be with you anymore." Wei Ying repeated, voice rising slightly more than before. "I can't do this anymore. We can't be together. I'll leave Gusu, and I'll leave Yunmeng. I don't want to bring you into my problems, Lan Zhan. Why can't you just—"
"That's exactly what I don't understand, Wei Ying!" Lan Zhan is surprised to hear the rise in his own voice as he continued, "Why are you telling me only the last part? Why not the whole thing? Why can't you tell me the truth? Why do you—"
"You want the truth?" Wei Ying's eyes were dark now, and Lan Zhan stared back defiantly as he continued. "I’ll give you the truth, then. I don't want you anymore. I'm seeing someone else."
For a moment, Lan Zhan stood there, stunned as if he had been struck by lightning, but then he noticed the tremble in Wei Ying's lips and the tears in his eyes, and the shaking of his hands and how guilt was written across his entire face—
"You're lying, you're lying to me." Lan Zhan said, trembling with anger as he spat out, "How dare you— you— have you stooped so low as to lie about yourself to me, Wei Ying? Why do you have to lie, why do you lie all the time?!"
"Why do I have to tell you the truth?!" Wei Ying exclaimed, eyes bright as he took a step forward. "What do I owe you?! What do you want?! Why can't you see I'm trying to protect you?! I'm going a world away, Lan Zhan; I know I'm ruining my own life! I thought you would understand, I thought you would—"
He cut himself off, sobbing as he turned away, and now Lan Zhan is choking on the feelings he had been taught to bury deep down within him since he was old enough to understand words.
He missed his mother more than ever.
He wanted to tell him. Wei Ying, I'm fighting my sect for you. I'm destroying my life for you. I'm doing everything I can. Then why? Why do you want to leave? Why do you leave me again and again?
But instead, he said, "You made me love you, Wei Ying. From the moment we met, I hated you with every fibre of my existence, and you broke through all my walls and made me fall for you. You taught me how to feel, you showed me love. I could depend on you just as much as you did on me. We were soul mates, Wei Ying. We still are. And now— now you won't tell me where you're going, now you won't— I know you're hurting yourself, I— you have to let me help, Wei Ying. I can't— without you, I don't know what I—"
"Lan Zhan, breathe." There are hands in his hair and on his cheeks, cool and comforting as they make their way down to his chin and lift it up. "Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan."
This is my love, Lan Zhan thinks. My love, my other half, my soulmate, my beloved — the only one who'll ever know who I am, what I am — and now he's leaving too.
"Oh, love, please don't cry," Wei Ying is caressing his face with rough fingers (stained by the blood of many — their fault, their fault), and Lan Zhan realizes that he's crying.
He yanks his face away, rubbing his tears away harshly as he tried to ignore the heartbreak written across his Wei Ying's face.
"Come with me, Wei Ying." Lan Zhan asserts shakily, trembling hands coming up to his lover's shoulders as he continued, "Come with me, live with me. I don't care what anyone else thinks as long as I have you. Let me help you. Don't— don't waste yourself away. Please, just— just, just don't ruin your own life, please."
Lan Zhan's heart shatters all over again when Wei Ying's face shutters immediately, eyes going cold as he looked away resolutely. He will go, he will leave me.
"Both you and I know that's not possible, Lan Zhan. What I'm doing now, who I'm helping now, all this will hurt me. I know that. I know very well what the consequences of my actions are going to be. The Jins are looking forward to killing me. I don't care. I don't care if they kill me."
Lan Zhan watches Wei Ying's eyes soften a bit in the moonlight flooding in through the window. He looks older — his grey eyes seem to sparkle in the light, but with none of the enthusiasm or brightness he saw before.
'Before' is a stinging memory, an old reality that seems now like a dream. Before, when everything was alright. When Wei Ying was alright.
When he was alright.
"I cannot let you carry the weight of my actions, Lan Zhan. Please, leave." Wei Ying's voice stabs through his ears as he flinches violently, head bowed and hands trembling.
"Wei Ying, listen—"
"No, I have heard enough." Wei Ying interrupts, staring at him as if he was a stranger.
"Whatever was between us is in the past. It's gone. It's useless to dwell on something that never would have lasted. Live while you still can, Lan Zhan. Don't land into stupid problems like me."
Wei Ying laughs at that, and it's so cold and hard that Lan Zhan feels his eyes burn. It's like goodbye, Lan Zhan thinks. His head feels heavy, as does his heart, and he just, just—
"I want you with me, Wei Ying." Lan Zhan pleads, desperately holding on to his arm. "I want you. Even— even if— I don't care about everything. I just, I just want—"
His hand is shrugged away.
"You should leave now, Hanguang-jun." Wei Ying says, "It's getting late, people will talk. Your shufu won't want his darling nephew in a traitor's den. Go home."
Lan Zhan wants to scream. He wants to hold Wei Ying close, he wants to tell him that all he wants is him, he wants him to call him "A-Zhan" again, he wants him to hold him, he wants, he wants—
He wants him.
He stares pleadingly at Wei Ying, eyes shining with tears again as he gasps out, "Wei Ying, Wei Ying, I—"
"Go home, Lan Zhan," Wei Ying sighs softly, squeezing his hand reassuringly. "Everything will be okay."
Then Wei Ying, his Wei Ying, leans forward and plants a kiss on his temple, whispering, "Go home, love."
Lan Zhan pulls away to look at him, just look at him, before he turns around to the door.
"Goodbye, Wei Ying" is his whispered farewell, a promise, a feeling, a hope so fragile that it takes him everything to not break it.
Nothing will be okay, I know. He knows as well.
When Lan Zhan leaves, he doesn't look back.
