Since @hell-heron is a friend through the A Song of Ice & Fire fandom, I'll go with one of those.

There's my recent meta about the history of language in Westeros, but I'll give you some more. I think Westeros has seasons within seasons but the big seasons are so extreme, no one really cares about the annual 'seasons' except in terms of which plant gets planted when. I think the time scale is way off and everyone nattering on about a house ruling for a thousand years is completely full of bullshit, but no one in-universe cares because they're all lying about it. I don't think the Hammer of the Waters that broke the Arm of Dorne was actually magical, just geological which the Children claimed cause it was politically expedient. So much of GRRM's world building re: the Dothraki and the Iron Born is based on unexamined ahistorical tropes that I prefer to ignore quite a bit of it that makes no sense.

Part of Dennis' knack and interest for cave exploration comes from the plethora of YouTube videos depicting other people exploring abandoned mines, tunnels, and caves around the world. He's even gone so far as to subscribe to a couple of dedicated channels for underground exploration, but will watch just about anything depicting sublevel adventuring if it seems interesting enough. Occasionally, this will bring him into the urban exploration feeds which he also likes, but not as much. Often times things get too real and too scary there, which leads him into retreating back towards the underground exploration - which still has its own dangers, but never really seems to phase him beyond instilling a bit of extra caution.

How Soon is Now? 🌻

Tess falls pregnant in September.

Unfortunately, she does not realize this until early December. She had assumed she was pre-menopausal, and food has been scarce. She's happy to not have periods.

She and Joel have been busy, busy prepping for winter, doing as many runs as possible, stashing food away so they can survive until spring.

She has an IUD. Had an IUD. It was due to expire anyway, but turns out it fell out sometime during her last two extremely hellish periods, when she'd been stuck shivering and groaning over the toilet for hours. (Thank god those only happen a few times a year.) She figures it all out when her breasts are tender and she can't feel the strings anymore.

Unfortunately part II, FEDRA requires pregnancies be registered, and bans abortions for people who fall pregnant from August through November. They have to keep up enough population to feed their supply chain, and the summer months are when resources are most plentiful for supporting births and families newborns.

Tess will have an abortion, one way or another. She refuses to be pregnant, refuses to go through that misery again, especially at her age, refuses to put their work on pause and leave Joel without a partner, refuses to risk death during the delivery process, refuses to bring a child into this fucking hellscape world.

She doesn't tell Joel any of this. She'll figure it out on her own, as soon as possible; he doesn't need the weight of this burden on his shoulders. And maybe, a part of her doesn't want to face what it would do their relationship. She doesn't know what the consequences will be, but she knows they'll show up if she doesn't act fast, and there will be a reckoning.

She starts taking more risks during their runs, and during their daily life -- drinking more, going out without Joel more, taking the more physically demanding route around and outside the QZ, provoking the people in the slums known to be happy to swing a fist at anyone so she can put herself in that path. She won't go to one of the dirty back-alley butchers with unsterilized tools. She'll figure this out on her own. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Joel calls her out on it one day, and it's the knock-down drag-out fight of a lifetime. He gets her backed into a figurative corner. And the truth comes out.

Joel turns white and storms out. Tess gives him a minute, and then snatches up a bottle of moonshine that was for trade and storms out in the opposite direction. She won't wait at home for him to slink back, shitfaced and having whatever reaction he's going to have. She's glad Tommy is gone, if he was still here, Joel would be tempted to tell his brother.

She stays out as late as possible, going nowhere in particular, just stalking their usual paths around the QZ, ducking the checkpoints. It's so much harder without Joel, she'd forgotten.

By the time she gets back, she's hammered. She lies down on the cold, refreshing, disgusting tile of their bathroom and hopes, just this once, not to wake up in the morning. Her arm and the tile beneath her are wet. She's not crying, is she?

Joel is back the next morning. They're both hungover, so prickly with each other. It's not forgiven, and it's not forgotten. Even if they somehow seem to be in consensus that this pregnancy is bad and should be terminated, Joel's reasons feel so much more personal. He never wanted to be a father again. He doesn't blame her for getting pregnant, but he blames her for not telling him until whatever date it is, late December or early January. She doesn't understand why it's the case, but somehow, for him, that's worse. And he blames her for the foolhardy way she's been acting. And probably, on some level, the anger is probably covering up for his fear, so it's particularly vicious. It's hard not to take it to heart. He's angry at her. She starts to withdraw, to lash out. To assume everything from him is said and done backhandedly.

They don't patch it up. It's approaching February. Tess is probably close to five months along. Her body is changing; it remembers her last pregnancy from a lifetime ago, when her son was born, and is trucking along fast enough that she's looking quite far into the pregnancy. She hates every single day. Time is running out for her, for them.

As with everything in their lives, the best luck and the worst luck seem to collide and happen at the same moment:

Someone she crossed has snitched. One of their regular FEDRA clients warns them that FEDRA is coming to pick her up, now, tonight, to put her in custody until she can be screened by an OB/GYN, and possibly to be kept in "protective custody" until her little parasite is born.

They're out at a drop. Someone has changed their mind, doesn't like the terms. Ammo has been scarce this far from FEDRA patrols, so no one has guns.

Someone comes barreling at Tess. Normally Joel would step in front. He meets her eyes, looking sick, and steps aside, faking a stumble.

He lets them hold him back, sagging in their grip. His eyes and face are dead. He has gone away somewhere else.

She wakes up in FEDRA custody. She hurts all over. That fucker was thorough.

There's a doctor, comes in with a clipboard and a falsely sympathetic expression. No heartbeat. Sick relief warring with strange and unwelcome shame. Not for what she'd done, but for the how. For the expression she'd seen on Joel's face. For the fact that she'd put too much stock in blissful ignorance and gotten pregnant in the first place.

The FEDRA fuck can't keep her mouth shut:

Her fetus, their child. It was a boy.

A son, an heir, of their nebulous and unstable empire, of things that could be snatched away at a moment's notice, of nothing in particular.

Understandably what she saw on her 13th birthday changed her a lot. Kyrah went from a very happy, but diligent child, to being really closed off and filed with a lot of guilt and self-blame for what happened. Finding her way to the Circle in Capra helped her heal some over the years. All of the captains, Blade, Pan, Neon, and Raven know. Of course none of them know how much it changed her. Once when she was a bodyguard for a shitty noble, she caught someone sent to assassinate him. She was ordered to find out who sent the assassin. So she sucked it up and tortured them*, but it made her sick. Eventually she took a big risk and Enchanted the person to get them to talk. Luckily no one caught her. This fundamentally changed what kinds of jobs she took, and she maintained firmer boundaries after that. It also added to her guilt complex. No one knows about this incident yet. It's one of those things that she will eventually tell someone. Not that she's hiding it, more that she tries to let it lie in the past where it belongs. * Edit: She tried every non-drastic method of getting them to talk she could think of before going to torture. 19. Since it doesn't really impact others, why put a lot of work into changing someone's mind about her? Whereas she only sees status as a tool, but will protect it! Kyrahlise tries to maintain her status because of how it can affect others or her future. So she always worked hard to get good recommendations from her former employees, making it easier to get future jobs. Now she's keenly aware her status can affect the Shepherds. She always keeps that in mind on missions, and when interacting with the public, and other branches of the government.

9. worst part of canon

the sternritters. i think it's obvious that kubo loves an ensemble but where the soul society and hueco mundo had strong personal stakes and characterization, the sternritters just feel bland to me. granted, kubo had his health issues, but it felt very uninspired to have the quincies portrayed as persecuted victims of soul society in the first arc and then have tybw pull a 'they're still victims but they're also nazi-coded, so stan soul society' and that's just...inconsistent to me. besides all of that, i also think a lot of them are boring and there were way too many of them. when people talk about bleach's villains – sure, a couple of them have started bringing yhwach up, but aizen, grimmjow and ulquiorra still dominate the conversation, and believe me, i loved getting to see bankai!rukia, but nothing was more amazing than her fight against aaroneiro. so much of the HM arc had to do with the arrancars reconciling with their own true nature and their philosophical quest for meaning in one way or another, while the SS arc introduced us to one iconic character after another and cemented the classic bleach aesthetic. meanwhile, tybw has the grandiose of a war story, and a certain finality to it that amplifies the stakes (not to mention, uryu's 'betrayal' and ichigo's own conflict about his heritage) but i think it would have been interesting if kubo took a different direction entirely with ichigo's search for identity where, in the absence of Evil Sternritters or yhwach or any of that nonsense, ichigo would have to face the fact that it was soul society who killed his mother (like they did with soken) but i understand that, from an editorial perspective, shinigami characters are very popular and this would definitely change the balance of things, and also it would probably convolute isshin's backstory a little bit but idk. tldr: the sternritters were (to me) forgettable

"Apparently some humans used to do this with like, nets or whatever, I've seen it in vids," comes Sol's voice, as Nem edges closer and closer to the edge of the Garrison. "I'd kinda like to try it that way, it seems like it'd be fun! Probably easier than this, y'know?"

Nem peeks around the corner and there they are: Sol and the alien motherfucker trying to steal her whole goddamn life, smiling at each other without a care in the world. Her girlfriend's hair's down and loose and tangled, and as she runs around chasing some dumb bugs, Symbiosis is sitting in the grass and watching with a smile warm on his face. "You're acquitting yourself quite well, though."

"Ehh," says Sol, sticking her tongue out, and Nem has only one single moment to feel a familiar flush of anger at their obvious familiarity with each other before she adds, "Nem would be way better."

The anger dies in her chest. Sol continues on, oblivious: "She's always been way better than me at anything athletic or whatever, y'know? Like when we were kids, she'd always kick my ass at sportsball pretty much every time we played."

That makes the alien smile a little, eyes staring into some middle distance, like he's imagining it--like he's thinking about human children, the most vulnerable kind of humans in the world, and somehow that brings a smile to his face--but the smile fades soon enough into something a stupider person would call pensive. "I do hope..." he says, slowly, "...that my presence in your life hasn't...."

"Aw, bud," says Sol, before giving up on her latest bug and sitting down right beside him, close enough that if he wanted he could reach out and snap her fucking neck. "I know things with Nem aren't... I mean, they're not... they're not great, but...."

Sol has to visibly swallow at that, which makes Nem feel like shit even though none of this is her own damn fault. Just that stupid alien's. Still, any guilt dries up the moment Sol leans over to put her head on the alien's shoulder easily, like she's done it a thousand times. "You're one of my best friends too, y'know? I would've gone totally crazy when that stupid war started without you."

And that makes the stupid fucking alien look so fucking fond and warm and bright that Nem wants to march straight over, punch him in the face, and then drag Sol away by the wrist. That's her girlfriend, she thinks, her fucking girlfriend, not his, and he shouldn't be looking at her girlfriend like--

It takes her a second, to recognize the cadence of her thoughts, and as she does she feels sick. No. No. She's not going to be like that, not when she only just escaped it herself, and not towards the very person who saw herself standing in the jaws of some horrid beast and pulled her away before they could come down on her neck; she won't be that beast herself, she won't, she won't--

Her eyes meet the alien's, staring over in surprise. The blood drains from her face; with no care for whether anyone else saw her spying like a lunatic, she turns and bolts.

(( Thresh does live aboard year round at a local marina, living on a ship is something he’s very used to and really didn’t want to give up! He’s made great friends with the manager of the marina and few of the dock hands by offering to help around on the slips.

One of the dock hands tends to swing by often whenever works slow to just chat, Marv is their name. Though with how often Marv like’s to hang around, Thresh wonders if he’s just slacking off. Either way Thresh keeps a stock of Marv’s favorite cookies, snicker doodle, in his kitchen for him and a slew of other snacks for any one else to. ))
