Chronic migraine isn't a headache
I feel like, when we say 'a migraine is not a headache', people think 'it's not just a headache, it's also nausea and vomiting and being groggy' but it's not even that.
Migraine is not a headache, in that you don't have to have a headache to have migraines.
Not that I blame anyone - if you Google 'What is a migraine?', the NHS, Mayo clinic, etc, will always tell you 'migraine is a headache…' with additional add-ons.
Doctors get an entire 4 hours of medical training on 'headache' in their entire 7 years of education. Of course 'migraine is a headache' will be trotted out - headache is the most common symptom, and the one that bothers people the most.
It's understandable, but wrong.
Check out what you get from places with a migraine speciality, like the migraine trust and the national migraine centre:
'Migraine is a disorder of the brain where the nerves become over-stimulated and cause a cascade of chemicals to be released'
'Migraine brains' are easily overstimulated in response to sensory input (light, sounds, movement, smells, etc), of which headache is a product. Also nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to stimuli, vestibular dysfunction, sometimes stroke-like symptoms.
If that sounds a little like a neurodivergency to you, then yeah, it is.
Migraine is not 'a bad headache' and if you're getting them chronically, you should think about seeing a doctor* (or asking them for a referral to a headache doctor, or at least a neurologist)
'Chronic' Migraine is defined by:
at least 15 headache days a month
with 8 having migraine symptoms
for at least 3 months
(IF YOU HAVE CHRONIC MIGRAINE, YOU ALSO HAVE CHRONIC PAIN)
Otherwise it's 'episodic migraine' (although recent research indicates this defintion might be changing to be less restrictive, based on impact on the individual)
Migraine can become worse and less responsive to treatment the longer they go without treatment, so it's always worth seeing a doctor*, even if you're not having enough to be considered chronic.
Just as you can have migraines without headache, you can also have headaches without migraines that still require treatment. There's a whole host of differential diagnosis for migraine, from tension headache to cluster headache, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, hypertension, sinus disorders, trigeminal neuralgia, and on and on.
NB: Chiari malformations can also mimic migraines sometimes, by causing symptoms that come along with migraines, like neck pain, unsteadiness, dizziness, etc.
Migraines 'not just a headache'? Migraines aren't even a headache.
*usual caveat on seeing doctors; yeah, they cost money (in the US and/or privately elsewhere), long waiting lists, a lot of them A LOT OF THEM are incompetent, YMMV, but it's worth it for migraines.

Reminder for fellow adhd peeps with a headache
Please drink some water. Just. A couple of sips, okay? Dehydration can cause really bad headaches. Just a little bit
Have you eaten something since the morning? The past couple of hours? If not, get some food, okay? Whatever's within reach. Yes, even that bag of chips, and if you can pair it with some apple and peanut butter, that'd be amazing. But if you can't, chips works
Have you closed your eyes since the last half an hour? Streched? Taken a few deep breaths? It helps, i promise. Just thirty seconds is fine. I know they're boring
Have you forgotten to take the earbuds off?, Has the music been blasting in your ears while you're tuning it out? It might be a bit too much for your brain. Try turning it off, okay?
Are you cold? Too warm? Try adjusting the temperature of your room. I promise it helps.
Finally, the distinctions between days are artificial, but your exhaustion is not. If it's possible, let yourself take the day off if you need to, okay?

some of my favorite headache prompts:
unexpected, via magic. a sudden sharp pain through the nose into the skull, driven like a spike. the little gasp, hand curling up to touch but the pain continues, pushes, too scared to make contact. doubling over, stumbling back into a wall. friends calling their name, hands touching their shoulder, sparks in their vision. all they see is white.
overworking. days and days of no sleep. feet heavy and warm and legs buzzing. alongside the steady throb of pain against the forehead and eyes is a wavering lightheadedness, leaving them unsteady and seeking support against walls, tables, countertops, their friends. flinching when lights flick on or curtains slide open. short breathing, dizziness, spike in pain, sliding to their knees with hands over their face, struggling to think until darkness.
chronic. unable to get out of bed from a migraine. it's been... days, at least, if not weeks. greasy hair, labored breathing, one hand tangled in the sheet trying to ride the constant waves of pain. slick with sweat or maybe it's the fever. ragged, exhausted, holding back another run to the bathroom to puke for the second time of the hour. the door unlocks, distant voices, a cold hand touching their face and they whimper, leaning into the soothing touch.

Writing this with fucked vision and a fucked head so forgive me for not putting it through grammerly (/s) but fr, people struggling with migraines without proper accommodations or medicine or general medical care, y'all have my heart. I've been struggling Sith this since I was little. They told me it was my eyes (which were admittedly fucksd), kept changing my glasses prescription and denying my need to see a headache specialist for years.
When I finally saw one, she couldn't get me out fast enough, telling me off for "self-disgnosing" myself with migraines and saying I was probably causing them by taking headache medicine too frequently (the only means of stable pain relief I had besides ice packs) but gave me an extremely low dose headache med and lied to me about the side effects, despite knowing my pain was 24/7 and severe and that I was very sensitive to medicine side effects.
To say that was only the beginning of me being fucked over and an example of what was to come is an understatement to the point of seeming like a joke. I've been back and forth so many times with quite a few people, most of whom seemed to view me with something varying from clear disinterest to mild irritation and I've been on too many headache meds over the last year alone, I'll tell you that. It makes me so fucking tired.
People with chronic migraines like me are chronically neglected and chronically mistreated by doctors and the like and my heart goes out to all the people like me. Especially those who haven't found meds that work properly, or don't have great doctors or have other medical issues too that are exacerbated by your migraines or vise versa. We're fighting thankless battles all the time but this is my thank you for fighting it because knowing its not just me out there helps. Just a little bit.

Hello it’s me, Rui again (idk if you remember me, i left an appreciation comment a while ago)
but I have Chuuya headcanons if your interested (I’ve never wirrten headcanons out before so I’m sorry if they are bad help) I’m so embarrassed writing this
(if you end up liking them i can definitely talk to you about Akutagawa headcanons too if you want lmao)
Chuuya is nauseous for days after using corruption and dazai has to do his best at taking care of him (he sucks at it)
Having Arahabaki inside him causes him to need a lot more rest than the average person. Most of the time he tries to ignore this due to his loyalty to his work and he ends up either passing out or making himself sick for weeks because of it
Arahabaki in a small body like his makes it so that he tends to eat a lot more food than the average person due to energy being consumed faster. When he gets sick he tends to bring up a lot more.
Arahabaki loves to scream in Chuuyas head, causing him to get major migraines. Even when Dazai touches him, the nausea doesn’t usually leave
Chuuya usually ends up vomiting the second that corruption is nullified
HC (Kunikida bashing, i love Kunikida but i need chuuya to suffer so i can have Soukoku content) once chuuya ran to the agency office to get dazai to shut arahabaki up, but he ended up throwing up all over the agency floor and Kunikida yelled at him making his migraine worse, sending him into a panic attack. Dazai ran to his aid
chuuya often can’t make it to the bathroom in time because his migraine make it so that he can’t see or walk properly. Dazai usually keeps a bin nearby his bed during these times
chuuya has such a large amount of pride that he’s afraid of throwing up in fear that dazai will think he’s disgusting so he usually tries pushing him away (it doesn’t work)
arahabaki gives him the worst migraines when he’s stressed
due to past lab experiences, chuuya usually goes to sleep/passes out when he’s stressed because then he doesn’t have to deal with the pain. When he wakes up however, the pain isn’t gone
anyway that’s all i have for now. i was so embarrassed writing that honestly, but your so nice and accepting to everyone that I thought it would be okay. my headcanons aren’t great, but please tell me your thoughts on them qwq
I might make more if they end up being good enough or enjoyable qwq
sorry for bothering you ahhh
Rui!!!! Of course I remember you!!!!! Thank you for this beautiful list of headcanons these are absolutely fantastic and perfect inspiration for fics...don't be embarrassed or think these aren't great, I love them I'm so glad you took the time to write these and send them to me!!!!! Please feel free to send more in the future I'd be so happy to read them 💖💖 (and will certainly take you up on the offer for Akutagawa hehe you know I'll never turn down any content for him)
I really really love Corruption related whump for Chuuya it never fails to interest me....being sick as soon as it's switched off is so good because he has zero control over it, once he's conscious enough to understand what's happening it stresses him out even more...and the migraines !!! Chuuya is a perfect migraine candidate!!!!! I'm in love with your detail about them causing him to have trouble walking and seeing underrated symptom that's perfect for him 😭 especially since he usually carries himself very well it's super obvious to Dazai that he's struggling once his steps start to shift and he isn't picking up his feet right...catching him 😭😭😭 catching him whenever he passes out ughhhh my favorite....i just generally really love this idea of him often having zero control of when and where he throws up i know it super stresses him out ....💔💔💔💔💔💔

Whump Prompt #1116
Anon asked:
Any prompts for a character having their magic ripped out of them?
I can give it a go:
Is the magic trapped in something? A stone/painting/jewellery? Is this item then lost?
When they’re reunited with their magic, do they have to re-learn how to keep it contained/learn to get used to it again?
Do they have chronic pain from how the magic was removed? Do their fingertips sting? Does their head pound? Do they lose their vision?
Do they feel useless/helpless? Do they run away from their magical town/team?
Are they found years later after they’ve built a sense of normalcy? How do they react when they’re told they can get their magic back.
Are they reluctant at first? After some reflection they realised that all their magic did was cause pain... do they really want to do that again?
Do they only agree when a word of an attack on the town/Big Bad is on the way?
After all is said and done... do they want to keep their power? Do they become delusional with power? Do they beg to have it taken away again?
...or do they have a renewed sense of confidence?

Believe 👏 People 👏 When 👏 They 👏 Say 👏 A 👏 Scent 👏 Is 👏 Making 👏 Them 👏 Sick!!! 👏
Obviously it's impossible to stop people from using unnecessary scents, but for the love of God if you work in a medical setting don't wear heavy perfume or use air fresheners! It should be standard practice in any doctors office, because of all people you should know better than that.

Watched the Critical Role ECCC 2024 panel. Loved that Marisha asked Taliesin why he wanted to play a character with chronic pain. And Taliesin's answer that he wanted to work through feelings around his personal chronic pain from TMJ that's sort of a constant low-level headache.
Had an eventful weekend that's depleted me into worsening my own chronic pain, but hopefully I can clip that tomorrow.
The panel is here. Mica's question at 0:37:04. Marisha followup at 0:40:00.

Anyway as someone who has migraines which are triggered by bright lights
Turn your screen brightness down
The number of migraines and severity of migraines I had after doing this were significantly less. Turn it as far down as you can and still see it. Like dear God how do non migraine suffers look at full blast bright screens without getting headaches. This is one of the easiest tips to preventing migraines. Your head and eyes will thanks you
