people seem to approve of Donatella mode so here's a thought.

While the family is setting up at a new campsite, Dona and Raz overhear raised voices a little ways away and go over to check it out. Turns out there had been some kind of mistake and someone else thought they had booked the campsite at the same time as the Aquatos. Augustus is being calm and trying to reason with them, but the other person is getting unreasonably riled up and becoming aggressive.

Now Dona will NOT take this. She is a "he asked for no pickles" wife through and through, and also she's been having a frustrating time trying to book this campsite in the first place and is at the end of her rope. She pushes in front of Augustus and immediately starts going ham on this person--"how DARE you speak to my husband this way--" is it suddenly getting hotter or is it just her? "--where on earth do you get off being so rude--" she can just barely hear Raz repeating "Mom? Mom!" in an increasingly panicked voice "--need I remind you that WE were here before you showed up--" the person is staring at Dona's hands, mouth open, eyes wide "--and ANOTHER thing, figlio di --"

and fire explodes around them.

It doesn't get near enough the other person to hurt them, but they jump back, and then mumble under their breath and storm away. Donatella is still shaking from the sudden outburst, and doesn't quite realize what she did--until she turns to her husband and sees his expression of complete shock.

Until she hears her son's voice shake as he asks her, "Mom, was that....pyrokinesis?"

Psychic!Dion just Having the Ability to "Read A Crowd" Really Well

He can! He'll walk through the fairgrounds before a show to get a read of how people are feeling before a show. He can also get a good read on people's negative/critical opinions of him.

Dona often asks him what he thinks of a show or new routine because he can always pinpoint a crowd's reception so well.

He knows how to pace his performances to get the biggest possible reactions, how to tell when more people are distracted or scared or enthralled.

He's also hyper aware of how they're seeing him. He feels all those eyes on him and he gets so many impressions. Some people are laughing at him, some are bored, some are impressed and some are scared for him.

Being so conscious of stranger's opinions feeds in to his self image and it looks like normal teenager stuff, but it's more intense. He can't describe how he just knows his show tonight was worse, but the crowd didn't like it as much, even if his dad says he was wonderful.

He's sensitive and attuned to others, especially large groups. He doesn't think he's psychic, his parents brush he signs off, but it's always there influencing how he experiences the world, which fits so well with how I think psychic powers are.

~PSYCHIC GENETICS~

So I keep trying to think about how genetics would work regarding someone being a psychic or not. It's obviously not super common to be a psychic but probably more common than people might expect in the world with stigma against it. I'm thinking like left-handed type percentage maybe which is around 10% of people.

But I'm using blue eyes as a reference point regarding looking into genotypes for psychic brain activity and I think I can make that work with that headcanon because around 8-10% of people have blue eyes.

So here's my concept for the psychic genotypes and phenotypes and how it plays into my character headcanons....(and I guess I'll see if any of my current headcanons are disproved by this theory too I guess lol!) Let me bust out some Punnett Squares and interpret the results. (I know that realistically to explain it better it wouldn't be determined by a single trait for the genotype and that a multi-trait explanation could probably type the phenotypes I created in a much more comprehensive way but I'd rather just go basic for right now ^_^)

Okay so here's the outcome of a homozygous nonpsychic and a homozygous psychic. All heterozygous outcomes. I choose to believe that the heterozygous outcomes can present in a number of ways, including:

Completely under-the-radar psychic presence that the individual is fully unaware of, functionally nonpsychic

Outright psychic with a psychic awakening from a young age like a homozygous psychic would typically have

"Weaker" psychics or psychics with a more limited skillset

"Spiritual" type individuals with some sort of psychic awareness without the outright presence of psychic "powers"

I personally think that the "strength" of a psychic's power has something to do with lineage, and not necessarily whether the genotype is purebred recessive for the psychic phenotype.

So here's an example with my headcanons for the Aquato lineage.

Zalto - the more "spiritual awareness" type psychic presence without actual powers

Mithra - fully realized psychic with very strong powers including visions

Lucrecia - fully realized psychic from a young age

Marona - functionally nonpsychic

Lazarus - fully nonpsychic

Augustus - limited skillset psychic / possibly just untrained

I like to assume that both of Donatella's parents are fully nonpsychic. This puts the kids' respective genotypes and phenotypes as:

Dion [NN] - fully nonpsychic

Frazie [Nn] - outright psychic

Razputin [Nn] - outright psychic

Mirtala [NN] - fully nonpsychic

Queepie [Nn} - psychic with limited skillset, fully unaware of psychic status

With the 50/50 probability, 3/5 kids with psychic presenting traits lines up pretty well!

But touching back on what I said about the intensity of the psychic abilities one may have based on lineage, I would draw it back to the previous homozygous genotype carrier of the family. Letting that person's psychic strength sort of have a determining factor on what the cap of their lineage's power might be. So for example I headcanon Mithra as being a very powerful psychic, and that was passed down to Lucrecia as being vey powerful. Marona wasn't a strong psychic, Augustus had a higher level of psychic activity than her, Frazie has about the same level as Augustus, and Razputin, while having the mixed genotype, meets the same level as his origin point Mithra.

Just for funsies here's some of my other psychic geno- and phenotype headcanons :]

Loboto's mother had the recessive psychic gene and didn't know it as she was the "functionally nonpsychic" genotype. She would be disgusted to know this about herself👍👍 Loboto had the psychic phenotype with a young awakening but due to his procedure cannot reach the cap of power he would have been able to otherwise, and now has a very limited skillset, lending mostly to telekinesis upon his gradual recovery

Morry's father was fully nonpsychic [NN] and his mother had a strange spiritual awareness that occasionally allowed her to accurately predict the future or have suspiciously accurate "gut feelings" [Nn]. Both of Morry's brothers are NN and he is Nn.

Sasha's parents were both Nn and functionally nonpsychic, and Sasha is nn.

Both of the Natividad sisters' parents are the nn genotype and consequently so are the daughters.

(Referencing my headcanon Zanotto family tree) Tia & Teddy were both Nn and functionally nonpsychic, Bob is fully psychic nn, Laurel was Nn and functionally nonpsychic, Jonny was Nn which explained his prophetic visions, Truman is nn, Delphine is NN, Lili is Nn.

Okay, so, do you have any headcanons regarding Queepie or Mirtala?

Not especially, but I'll try to conjure any I do have from my mind

Queepie is psychic, Mirtala is not. The former is confirmed by the game but the latter is just me prefering that some of the Aquatos stay non-psychic, I find that avenue of Dona, Dion, and Mirtala being "normies" more interesting

Queepie's psychic abilities are part of the reason he's the world's smallest strong man, but it's not intentional and it's not the whole story. The kid is genuinely a buff baby he just also gets some help from mind overcoming matter

Mirtala really likes bugs, bug catching, drawing bugs, showing off bugs she caught to her siblings, ect ect. She's a little butterfly

Mirtala is pretty chill about the psychic stuff and even about herself not being psychic bc she's like that's cool but can you do THIS? *does a standing backflip*

Queepie will start a band in t-minus 10 years when he is a teen

Because he hangs out in the radio tower Queepie thinks Morris is cool

Queepie is the babiest of the family by a year-ish

So, I never mentioned this here, but I headcanon that Raz is scared of Zombies, not because they look scary (he does enjoy his monster stuff) but because when he was younger he was told that zombies were "people with rotten brains" by Dion, and this, combined with his parents being so Psiphobic melded into the idea of his parents zombifying the entire family to prevent them from being psychic, with him having nightmares about being zombified and his undead body being forced to mindlessly perform in the circus forever.

He knows that his parents wouldn't do this to him post PN2, but it does take a while for him to be able to watch zombie movies.

Everyone needs this in their lives, right now!!!! Baby Raz and Frazie headcanons go!!!!

At first Frazie was NOT a fan of Raz, because she wanted a baby sister. But she ended up owing Dion 10 bucks because GUESS WHAT-

Of course, she held him and immediately her mind was changed. She also felt a very strong connection with Raz the moment he opened his eyes and they stared at eachother. She loves all of her siblings equally, don't get me wrong, but she felt a much different and special connection with Raz when she held him in her arms for the first time *cough* psychic connection *cough*

She also fights with Dion on getting to hold baby Raz. Those two cannot leave him alone! (He likes the attention tho) When she DOES get a turn to play with him, she usually walks around and shows him the circus grounds.

She loves squishing his little face and petting his fuzzy little head. He's just so stinkng cute!

A religious headcanon - Romani actually have their own religion! And a way of expressing their religion. I think that Donatella, while having Romani roots, was Catholic for her childhood and Augustus both adopted some of the Catholic holidays, and taught Donatella about her roots.

An Angst Headcanon - Donatella and Augustus mostly keep their children sheltered because of Augustus's loss of his father (and later revealed his mother). They're terrified that if they go too far away from home, they'll die. Especially with the water curse. This is why Augustus talked to Raz about the family's enemies and how "I only wanted you to be happy, Razputin. And safe." (Augustus, Psychonauts 1)

Sexuality Headcanons * Nona - thinks labels are pretty neat, has a variety that she changes to depending on her mood and use of colors for things. Sometimes bi, sometimes pan, sometimes omni, sometimes ally because that's a pretty neat flag in her opinion. * Augustus - Augustus labels himself more cause he thinks that's what people are supposed to do, but takes it in the broadest sense he can. He likes the colors of the bi flag, though sometimes labels himself as pan. * Donatella - Donatella I think has found the bi label a long time ago and kept it. She doesn't like the change things in the community, but after PN2 when she's accepting of psychics she's like "You know what, fuck it, if someone wants to be in a relationship where they identify using a label than what business is it to me?" * Dion - Dion found the bi flag and loved the colors. He's been rizzing up ladies and fellows whenever he could during circus shows to get a little extra tip money. Doesn't quite get the extra omni or pan labels until he hangs around the Motherlobe and meets people like that. * Frazie - Lesbian. She tried to like guys but they weren't her style. She only liked girls. * Raz - he's confused cause he doesn't hit puberty and "the talk" made him uncomfortable, but a little while after puberty is in swing he starts to realize he's bi. Honestly, I think Raz would be attracted to those who are on far ends of the gender spectrum. He's a mix of "I want their gender" and "I want to kiss them" when seeing manly men and tomboys, and when he sees feminine boys and feminine girls he is silently hoping to "sweep them off their feet." * Mirtala - No label yet, I think finds labels to be too constrictive and choses to have no label and date anyone. * Queepie - No label yet, grows up with him adopting the aro/ace label.

I'll start with your question: Frazie. Frazie absolutely has the strongest cain instinct, to all except Tala I think, whom she is very protective over.

I think they all have to share a room in the caravan. Raz sleeps against the wall, then Dion and Frazie on the Outside-ish, with Tala and Queepie in between them.

Dion reads the youngsters bedtime stories. Many are made up off the top of her head.

When they camp, Dion and Frazie will sing songs around the campfire, and everyone will join in. One in particular that I think they sing a lot is The Cat Came Back (It's Tala's favourite)

Queepie, once he gets over his need for Alone Time, puts on little dance performances for the family. AKA makes them watch him do a little boogie and makes a Deal Of It. Dona loves it.

Raz makes them all silly little camp gifts (like friendship bracelets). Frazies has a pinecone on it, to symbolize all the pinecones she wont stop throwing at him Cut it out Frazie-

Tala loves ribbons. She puts them on everything she can get her little hands on. Including her siblings, if they are within reach.

Frazie and Raz bond by pulling pranks on the others with their psychics.

First impression: Ass. Asshole. Bitch boy. You're a dick. Apologize to Raz! You have the voice line! Just add it in! It's not fair how you treated Raz damnit!

Impression now: He still needs to apologize, but he's grown on me a lot. Especially with how a lot of people have pointed out his parentification to me.

Favorite moment: It's a small moment, but I find it funny how Dion was doing flips on the plane when Raz went out to meet the fam.

Idea for a story: I don't really have any story in mind for him. Maybe something with him and Sam going out and doing something stupid together with animals or cooking.

Unpopular opinion: I don't know what's popular or not, but I hate how Dion's actions are just ignored. Like yes, the whole family treated Raz pretty badly to some extent, but I feel like Dion was the worst and needs to apologize.

Favorite relationship: Him and Sam are my fave <3

Favorite headcanon: Don't have many headcanons, but I do like the idea he is absolutely not psychic at all. Him and Donatella, with Mirtala having such an insignificant amount of psychic-ness that it doesn't even count. Family bonding over no powers!

I wanted to ask what's your opinion on some popular psychonauts HCs? Are there any you'd like to talk about or some of your own you'd like to share?

Hmm popular Psychonauts HCs...

Okay so I know that a lot of the cast are headcanoned as queer and I'm totally fine with that. I really enjoy the different headcanons around that and seeing what kinds of interactions come from that. Even ones I don't believe in, like Genderfluid!Dion (I get more toxic masculinity vibes from him, Augustus, and Raz) and Transmasc!Lili. I've seen a few that I promptly disagree with, but I usually ignore the people who try to focus on that headcanon.

I'm a fan of the post that my mutual @sweetstwawbewwymilk created, which is Archetypes = what you need, Raz's Archetype = friend. Which I like to see people use that when making swap AU archetypes (Callisto and Raccoon!Lili my beloveds).

I love the idea of the adult friendships between Augustus, Dona, Truman, Milla, Sasha, and Hollis. They're like a clan of parents.

I really like the headcanons of Lili's links to her family being used in the past, particularly by Kitty and Franke cause they're older and Kitty is canonically manipulative. Mainly because not only does that flesh out the interaction she and Raz have at the lodge, but some campster interactions show other friendships...

Or the bittersweetness of "we still think of the good times with you, even if we used you."

Context- this is the kid that hacked into Lili's profile and took pictures of her without permission. At the very least, Franke still cares about Lili and I CHERISH that information.

I see the headcanons about the counselor stuff being thankless and a lot of the art that's about like... the irritation with the campers. But I think Raz actually SIGNS UP to be a counselor regularly. Like, I think Coach Oleander is a permanent counselor (so he keeps the Coach title instead of being called Morceau), but I think when Coach is all tired from that, Raz steps up as the next perma-counselor. Raz also teaches "Mental Gymnastics" in his mind, and encourages kids to use all the tricks in their arsenal to get around certain areas. His mind does change a bit because of this, having a little training area that combines circus stuff as well as things like roof-top running missions in Raz's memory to be an obstacle course for the other kids to run through.

I like to think Lili's mom is actually very similar to Raz. I think that while Truman took to being the Grand Head a few years after Otto, Lili's mom was ready to go on these fantastic world traveling adventures and fight people. I think she's the one who has the ability of pyrokinesis as her specialty, and she was all for Truman bringing psychics to fight bad guys.

I think Psychonauts takes place in the "futuristic" 2000s. You know, like those vibes that Back to the Future 2 gives with traveling forwards in time to 2012 that also has a lot of the similar culture of the time it was written. Some time where science stuff took advantage of how fast psychics could work and thus got further than today's world while still having things like: "have you heard of the new GameBoy Advanced? So cool."

I think that psychics actually get stronger the further down the line they come from. So Augustus is pretty strong (able to astral project without a Psi-portal, bash his psychic abilities against Raz's defenses, and psi-blast) and has a few abilities he can't really learn (tries to learn pyrokinesis, but I think he has that mental block + affinity for water). This is also true for Truman and Lili.

All of the Zanotto family have an affinity for music. Bob had a recital that he needed to go to during a time his mother was in the garden... the Zanotto family music box... Helmut married into the family (Fullbear-Zanotto is his legal last name)... I think that Truman and Lili enjoy singing to their plants. Also I love the idea that Lili can sing both death metal (cause plants apparently grow best around death metal) and opera (slightly taught from Helmut's knowledge of singing, cause there's no way that PsychOdessey isn't an opera in my mind).

This is a crack headcanon that I don't really believe, but I want to write: Lili has a synesthesia where she can taste emotions. Love tastes like citrus soda. Sadness tastes like sashimi. Irritation tastes like spicy chicken nuggets.

headcanons about the aquatos when they're sick

I had the stomach flu earlier this week! it was not fun and sexy, it was awful and unsexy, but here's some headcanons to make some good out of a bad situation

Augustus: you can't keep this man in one place for long. he will keep trying to Get Up and Do Things while fully delirious and the rest of the family is trying to get him to get some rest. even in bed he'll usually find something to do with his hands, the model trains thing actually started this way

Donatella: drama queen. is this even a question? she will fully insist that she's dying and she has, like, a mild cold.

Lucrecia: the family tends to worry about her a lot if she's sick because she's old and seems fragile, but she always insists she's survived worse and they're all worrying too much. she likes the attention though. also she was exactly the same when she was younger and with the psychic 7 because ford was kind of a worrywart when it came to her. she found it endearing.

Dion: just, like, goes into a tent and refuses to talk to anyone. there is however at least one picture of, when he and raz were around 6 and 12 respectively, an under the weather dion asleep and hugging raz like a squishy toy while raz is just kinda sitting there. nobody will let him forget this even though he doesn't really remember it.

Frazie: it's really easy to tell if she isn't feeling well because she's usually so energetic and if she's not firing on all cylinders the energy goes out of her like a sad balloon. she does however have a bit of her mom's drama queen traits and will complain like hell.

Raz: I feel like I've seen a lot of people saying that Raz would be a kid who gets easily sick. (or at least he would catch lili's cold after the games. he kissed her full on the mouth! when she was sick! germs!) but also he's kind of the same as his dad and more than once he's gotten sick before an important psychonauts mission and continually tried to insist that no, he could go on the mission he's not sick while he's actively throwing up. it's never especially convincing to whoever's dealing with him at the moment.

Mirtala: pretty regular sick little kid. she tends to get high fevers with relatively mild illnesses, and she'll just ramble about the weirdest shit while she's completely delirious. Dona is trying to get her to take medicine and she's just there going "no!!!! if I don't run away the butterflies are going to eat my hair!" and Dona's just like "that's nice sweetheart"

Queepie: has barely gotten sick once since he was born. it's kind of scary.

Because Queepie is the youngest he just has a big old water alligator cause of course the youngest has the biggest summoned creature.

Mirtala with bubbles is cute! Her making bubbles to bounce on is adorable!

Frazie with water/ice knives is cool. Her having the natural talent to freeze the water also shows some of her skill and specialty compared to her siblings

But the best one is Dion being able to make his limbs longer with water. Cause he subconsciously worries about them getting hurt cause they were out of his reach.

OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS SO MUCH

He just uses his water arms to grab them and loop them all in for a hug/to keep them out of danger

Maybe like that one lady from Legend of Korra!

Or! Maybe they look more like the Hands of Galochio, where we've always seen those hands grabbing at us in a menacing way, but this re-contextualizes it! Now the hands are reaching out to catch, like how they help Raz at the end of the second game

He's the oldest- his job is to catch them when they need it! Now he can reach out to them wherever they are

while i find a lot of psychic dion headcanons cool, i personally really like it best if he isn't. because firstly i like the idea of the family being split with frazie, raz, queepie and augustus being psychic and mirtala, dona, and dion being nonpsychic.

mostly though i just love it for what it could do for his character. if explored it could be used to tell us about the cultural stigma against psychics and how that idea from outside of the family could have influenced him. he said he got most of his information on psychics from queepie, but where did he hear it from?? just around? or did he just flat out make it up? i think dion being flat out unable to relate to psychic issues and having to learn compassion without being able to relate could grow his empathy as a character and alongside donatella trying to do the same, close the family rift regarding psychic issues.

i know half the content abt frazie is shipping her w/norma and thats ALSO valid but i feel like. frazie the individual character is worth a solo look.

like she's the first secret psychic in the sibling group. shes been hiding for longer than raz ever even bothered. she has issues with her dad shes not ready to talk about. she throws knives. she has so much potential

both Dion and gisu think their relationship is a summer fling that will fade because psychic barrier and anxiety and eventually realizing "oh"

Dion being a stickler for responsibility paired with Gisu's sk8 or die mentality would be very good for mischief. She would break into a restricted zone in the motherlobe just to skate there and Dion would join just to "make sure she doesn't die"

Dion has no godly clue what Gisu is tinkering with half the time but to be supportive he just yells things like "yeah show that skrungle who's boss"

I've also thought about him being the one to help bring her down whenever she's been working really late in the lab. She tracks me as the kind of person who is pretty relaxed until there's something she's personally really invested in and can often get hyper focused on it to the point of negative health repercussions.
