Minoan Kilt
The large, structural skirt worn by Minoan women in art is instantly recognizable, and when I made my own I combined current best guesses with my own personal tastes.

My kilt shape follows the hypothesis laid out by Bernice Jones in her book Ariadne's Threads: The Construction and Significance of Clothes in the Aegean Bronze Age. She describes the shape of that of a labrys, a double-headed axe with apparent ceremonial significance in Ancient Minoan culture. This garment may be depicted in Linear-B logogram *166 + we, we-being the backwards-s-shaped squiggle in the center which identifies the piece as a garment.

Actual details on construction and materials below the cut:
Construction:
The top and bottom edges of the kilt are concave, so the sides are longer than the middle. This gives the chevron-shape seen on layered kilts in art. In addition, the curved top half makes the skirt flare out, accommodating the hips and giving more freedom of movement to the legs. My kilt measured from my waist to my anklebone at the longest point, and about 1.5 times around my waist.
I chose to make a flounced kilt, with smaller strips of fabric and trim applied to a large base piece, rather than a tiered kilt, in which multiple kilt shapes of varying length are layered one on top of the other, so you end up wrangling 3 layers of fabric around the waist. The flounced kilt saves fabric and gives you a lot more freedom with whatever trim you might want. Jones' diagram for a flounced kilt is seen below:

Unlike the version in the diagram above, I chose not to attach ties to the garment itself both because the linen I used was very heavy and I was concerned about weight, and also because folding the skirt and securing it with a separate tie worked just fine for my tastes. In total I had four flounces: 2 alternating rows each of fabric and fringe.
The vertical edges of most kilts are left plain, probably representing either the selvage or an edge otherwise finished off to prevent fraying. For my kilt, however, I ended up with a couple inches of self-fringe on either side as I adjusted the fabric to the correct width. At least three examples of kilts with fringed vertical edges are known, all three from the so-called "House of the Ladies" in Akrotiri

The vertical edges of these kilts are reinforced with a colored band or tape, probably to keep the garment from unintentional further fraying. Accordingly, I did the same on my kilt. I also like that it gave a nice vertical diagonal to counterbalance the horizontal ones.
Materials
I tried to use mainly linen and wool, the fibers most available on Ancient Crete, but some of my trim was cotton because sometimes you just have to use what's cheap and available in the today times.
The base of my kilt is a heavy, patterned linen in what's called a diaper weave, meaning that a repeating diamond pattern is woven into the pattern itself. A lot of the Minoan textiles depicted in frescoes are characterized by repeating geometric patterns, likely woven into the fabric itself, and that was something I wanted to capture in my own piece. My linen is woven with both cream and natural colored threads. The heavy weight is important to give structure to the garment--otherwise it would be kind of limp. My linen was from Burnley & Trowbridge (shameless plug), as was the plain cotton twill tape I used to bind the top and bottom edges of the kilt, and the dark red wool twill tape I used along the vertical edges.

I bought my cotton fringe from a rug supply store. I had to search a while to find a fringe that would work for me, and I ultimately chose fringes with a woven header rather than the more common knotted one, so that it would lay flat against the kilt. I hid the woven header under a layer of cotton fringed trim from Michaels (yes, Michaels) with this really great diamond and dots pattern woven in black.
The blue layers are from a bolt of vintage wool Kimono fabric. Blue appears frequently in frescoes, likely achieved with indigo or woad dye, or even murex/mollusk dye. The fabric is printed with an imitation ikat pattern of diamonds and squares that made me think "the vibes seem right!" because quite frankly, you aren't going to get "historically accurate" Minoan textiles (which there probably isn't enough archaeological evidence to definitively describe) without, like, hand-weaving it yourself or paying someone hundreds of dollars to do it for you (and that price is if the weaver really likes you). Neither of which appealed to my desire to just make a fun, low stress project. Good enough is good enough.
The narrow trim on the bottom of the blue flounces is vintage cotton/poly woven trim. This trim, while narrow, was quite thick and stiff, which was great because it added more weight and structure to the end of my flounces since the wool fabric itself was quite thin.
The top layer is a custom tablet-woven wool trim that I commissioned from MAHTAVAhandicraft on Etsy. I imagined this as the "centerpiece" of my kilt, and I'd arrange everything to complement it.

It's a kivrim pattern, which has itself only been traced to 19th-century Anatolia, but I didn't care. The way it looks like waves reminded me of how central the sea was to life in the Ancient Aegean and Mediterranean and it captured the idea and aesthetic I was pursuing. I mean, doesn't it remind you of these dolphins?

The whole thing was machine sewn with the exception of hemming and adding trim to the blue flounces. If you were to look at it from the back, you'd see lots of zigzag stitches, because i wanted to be fast! and have fun! not chase some unreachable ideal of "accurate."
As for wearing it, I chose to wear it with the top part folded/rolled down over a belt, so I have a thick tube of fabric around my waist. Many images, like the frescoes above of women with fringed kilts, appear to just show the kilt being tied closed. Other images are so fragmented or stylized that it's unclear what kind of skirt closure was used. Sculptures and figurines definitely show some kind of SOMETHING around the waist, whether this is folded fabric or a kind of belt is unclear. Different art could show different things!

I think I see evidence of a continuous line from the skirt to the waist-roll on the figure on the left, found in Troas, which I think indicates some kind of skirt-folding situation. The woman on the right, found in Crete, looks more like she's wearing some kind of long coiled belt, or perhaps snakes. Who knows? I don't! For my own part, I found the combination of rolled waist + tie belt the most secure for doing things like kneeling, stomping around, and wading into rivers to rescue bees. I also liked that it gave me the bulk around the hips that gives Minoan figurines such a powerful silhouette, and proportionally gives more of an hourglass shape. If you wanted to do something more firmly grounded in the sources, stick just with the waist tie or belt, wrapped around a couple times and tied in back. If you want to be like me, just say "well we don't KNOW it didn't happen" and just do whatever you want. Have fun! Whatever happens, it should be fairly easy to move around in the kilt--this is not a restrictive garment, just a heavy one.

The silver band on your finger glistens in the bright lights of the wedding hall, looking anything but enticing; instead of a symbol of love and comfort, it was like a shackle that tied you to a man you didn’t love forever.
Your eyes scan the crowd for the millionth time this evening, trying to seek out a pair of familiar brown eyes— your heart drops for the millionth time this evening, and you realize all over again that no matter how many times your eyes search for his, it will not make him appear.
He won’t come, you know that now as your new husband leans over to ‘kiss the bride’.
You try to wipe the disappointment off of your face, let go of his messy brown curls and smooth words, his rough hands and intoxicating scent.
Mattheo Riddle wasn’t yours to think about anymore; the man in front of you was.
Why your father thought a marriage alliance with Gregory Goyle would help your family, you’ll never know.
Worse, Goyle was, at one point, at least a decent friend of yours; You, Mattheo, Draco, Theo, Enzo, Blaise, Tom, Goyle, and Crabbe, used to strut around Hogwarts like you owned the place— let’s be honest, you damn near did. You and your protective group of Slytherins.
You allow your lips to touch Goyle’s for only a moment before you pull back and smile cordially; the two of you walk arm-in-arm down the aisle until you reach the doors at the end.
The moment you’re through, you push him away.
“I’m sorry, Y/n.” He says sadly. “If I could have said no, I would have.”
You shake your head, not even listening. “He didn’t even come, Goyle. I thought he’d at least try.”
Goyle sighs. “It wasn’t up to any of us. Not even Mattheo.”
Your eyes sting so you force your face to go deadpan and stare at Goyle. “I will always love you as a friend, Goyle, but I will never love you as anything more.” You say, retreating towards your dressing room.
He says nothing in return. He doesn’t need to. The feeling is mutual.
You enter your dressing room and release a strained breath, resting your head against the door after you close it.
Taking a deep breath, you allow yourself to daydream; to think what this day would be like if Mattheo was the one wearing a suit, the one saying his vows and sliding a ring onto your finger. You let yourself imagine all of the things you would’ve shared with him in this alternate reality, all the joy you might’ve felt. The future you might’ve been able to look forward to.
A tear slips silently down your cheek as your throat closes, suffocating you in the feelings you wish you were feeling.
Someone clears their throat and your eyes fly open, as your whole body snaps stick straight.
It’s your father, sitting eery and alone in a dark room. “You had to grow up one day, Y/n,” he says as his cold gaze sweeps over you. “Stop running around with that Riddle kid and risking your future.”
You shake your head. “The only real future I had was with him, Father.” You tug on the skirt on your wedding dress, and then your hair. “All this— this glamour and camaraderie is you, father, you playing puppeteer with real live people. I don’t know what status you think you’ll get from Goyle, of all people.”
Your father just sneers and pulls up his sleeve— an elaborate tattoo meant to symbolize his allegiance to Voldemort. The dark mark. He says, “You know exactly who that boy’s father is, and exactly where that puts me in relation.” He pauses. “This is what the Dark Lord wanted, Y/n.”
“…what?” Your mouth hangs open, and you wonder why the dark lord would want to torment you personally. “Why would he… I don’t understand.”
Your father just brushes past you and twists the door open. “If the Dark Lord doesn’t tell, you do not ask.”
……
“You’re going to marry him, right?” Pansy asks, smiling at you in the way that friends do when you have a crush on someone.
You shrug, playing it cool but despite your heart going a thousand miles a minute; excitement courses through your veins at the thought of Mattheo. “I think we’d have to become an actual thing first, Pansy.” You laugh.
She winks at you playfully. “I don’t think that’ll take too long, Y/n, He is whipped for you.”
You shake your head. “He is not.” Your heart still flutters.
“He is.” A new voice cuts in, and it sends a shiver down your spine. You turn to face Mattheo, who is now leaning in the doorframe.
What an entrance.
Pansy looks between the two of you and smirks mischievously. “I‘ll leave you two alone and go bug Blaise.” She slips past Mattheo.
You can’t meet his eyes as you grin stupidly at the floor, and the shirt in your hand.
“You talk about me often?” He says, settling on the floor next to you; he breaks you out of your stupor by gently tugging the shirt out of your hands.
You finally look at him. “No, only when Pansy brings you up. Which is always.” You bite your lip as you smile. “I don’t mind it though, you’re one of my favourite subjects.”
“That’s good,” he agrees, toying with a lock of your hair. “I think the guys are sick of hearing about you.”
“Of course they are,” you banter, “They already know everything about me.”
Mattheo leans in closer. “I don’t think they know everything.” His head dips down until his lips are just millimeters from yours. “They wouldn’t know what your lips feel like, would they?”
He bridges the gap and the two of you spent what is probably several minutes just kissing, and when he pulls away you’re breathless.
“No, I don’t think they know that.” Your voice comes out high-pitched, still trying to catch your breath both mentally and physically.
“I hope they never find out.” He says quietly.
You nod absent-mindedly. “Me too.”
….
You sigh deeply and set down the box in your new living room. Trying to put a positive spin on it, you think about how it won’t be terrible living with a friend instead of your parents, who were never there when they needed to be and always there when you needed them to leave.
Emotionally and physically.
You and Goyle are throwing a housewarming party, per his mothers request; so, technically this box really shouldn’t be in this room right now. It needs to be prepped for the party.
Goyle walks into the room. “Malfoy wants to know if he should invite Mattheo.”
You shrug. “Tell him to invite him, I don’t think he’ll show up either way.” Getting over Mattheo has not been easy, and when you think about him, his absence still sends several intense stabs through your heart.
You can still feel the ravines where the cracks in your heart formed. If he did show up, it would either put you on the path to healing or destroy you all over again and possibly forever.
You were fully prepared for the latter if it meant seeing him one last time.
But he won’t show, just like he wasn’t there when you really needed him just a few months ago, when some other man’s ring was being slipped onto your finger and you were near powerless to stop it.
Goyle stares at you for minutes, as if you’re fragile and need to be handled gently. “It is short notice.”
You pick the box back up and walk past him, just to stop at the foot of the stairs. “That’s not what I mean and you know it.” Then, you go upstairs and place the box in the guest bedroom. You have all this space in your new house and absolutely nothing to do with it.
Rooms filled with expectations and soured dreams.
….
Parties should be fun; this cake, considering it’s your favourite flavour, should taste good. You’re surrounded by the faces of your closest friends, all your family— though you aren’t fond of many of them— and all of Goyle’s family. Yet, all you feel is unfulfilled aching for Mattheo.
You feel so pathetic, always thinking about Mattheo, always relating everyone moment to your first love.
But you had wanted him to be your last. Your only. Your everything.
Draco is here, and he’s the one who asked about inviting Mattheo, so you’re pretty sure he’s not coming and you know you absolutely shouldn’t ask.
Instead, you stare at Draco as you eat the tasteless cake, wishing he’d somehow understand what you wanted to know.
Doesn’t help that he’s across the room.
“Y/n, come upstairs for a minute.” Pansy says, dragging you away from the party and into your bedroom. Or what will be your bedroom, anyways.
When the door has shut and she’s locked it, she turns back to you. “You can’t spend the whole party pining over the possibility of Mattheo showing up, Y/n; I know how much he means to you but you have to accept that you’re married and it’s over. You’re only going to hurt yourself more if you keep obsessing over this.”
You reel back, though you’re thankful for how bluntly Pansy says it. “I know, Pansy, I know. I just— I don’t know if can ever get over him. I mean…” You trail off trying to find your words. “Goyle was probably the last person out of our group that I would’ve chosen if I couldn’t have Mattheo. Truly, I think I could live if it was Enzo, or Theo, or even Draco, but not Goyle.”
She sighs. “But it’s not them, and it is Goyle.”
“So, what now?” You huff. “I’m just supposed to… I don’t know, keep his house and have his kids?”
Pansy’s eyes soften but she doesn’t respond; its a rhetorical question and there really isn’t any proper answer for it.
Then, there is a knock at the door. Pansy unlocks and opens the door, just enough for her to see who it is.
When she does, she says nothing. You watch her slip out the door before you even see who is behind it.
And then he steps in.
Mattheo Riddle.
“Hello, Y/n.” He says, so plainly as though he hasn’t just affected you in more ways than you could ever possibly count.
You look away. “You actually came.”
He clears his throat. “I did.”
You can almost picture him a few years back, standing in your dorm room door, smiling at you in that teasing way that made you knees weak.
Except he’s not smiling, and there is absolutely nothing blissful about this moment.
“There’s something I have to tell you.” Mattheo shuts the door behind him. “If it changes anything at all.”
…..
“There’s something I want to tell you, y/n.” Mattheo says one day, cryptically. “I’m just not sure if I should yet.”
You brush his hair out of his face. “Whatever it is, you can tell me, whenever you’re ready.”
He shakes his head, but he’s not disagreeing. “I’m worried you’ll see me differently.”
“There is nothing in the world that could make me see you differently, Mattheo.”
He seems sated by your words, and pulls you into a hug, resting his chin on top of your head. The two of you stay like that for a long while before he finally says, “I’ll tell you, but not today.”
You nod silently and focus on the feel of his arms around you, not wanting to take a single moment with him for granted.
…..
“What is it, Mattheo?” You say exhaustedly while you sit down on the mattress. “What could you say that would change anything?”
He takes a deep breath and sits beside you. “I know why this is happening, why Voldemort singled you out.”
You look up at him. “Mattheo…” trailing off, you stare at his sleeve in horror, dreading what you think he’s going to say. “Please tell me you didn’t.”
He furrows his eyebrows, following your gaze; when he realizes, his eyebrows shoot up again. “No! No, That’s not why I know.”
You visibly deflate with relief. He instinctively curls his arm around you but then quickly pulls it away. “Okay,”
He chuckles dryly. “My reason is actually much worse.” Mattheo pauses, blowing out a breath. “I’m his son.”

.
.
After a moment's hesitation, you shoot up from your spot, your eyes blown wide with disbelief. “Mattheo, you cannot be serious.”
He stands up, and sits you back down, trying to keep you calm. “It’s not like I want to advertise that my father is the most notorious dark wizard in history.” He reaches out and pushes a strand of hair out of your face, like you used to do to him so many times. “But he didn’t want you with me, Y/n, all of this is happening to you because of me.”
He sinks down to his knees in front of you and takes your hands in his.
“So,” You start. “I was personally targeted by the dark lord because you couldn’t bother to mention what’s probably a very important detail.”
His fingers tighten around yours. “I was so scared that you wouldn’t love me anymore if I told you, and then, by the time you were engaged, it was too late.”
You push his hands away. “Mattheo, I would have loved you no matter what you told me.” The hurt in your voice makes him back away from you and you can see the pain swirling in his eyes too.
“I told you. You know. Now, we can fix this.”
“No, Mattheo,” You stand up and push him towards the door. “It’s too late. You’re too late.”
He shakes his head rapidly. “No. No, it’s not.” Mattheo tries to stop you from opening the door but ultimately you push him over the threshold. “Please, Love, We can make it work— we could run away, do anything— please.”
You can’t look at him as you speak, while tears flow freely down your cheeks. “We were something, don’t you think so?”
His face falls, and you can see his heart shatter— you can feel your heart mirror his.
Perhaps, though, the most painful part is when he replies; “Yeah, we were.”

Special Update!
New Years is on the way. So,I’ve been planning a few things!
I don’t know if y’all can tell, but I’m a very big project person. I love creating the concepts, drawings and rough drafts of my own projects. It fuels me with so much creativity and ideas it's not even funny. The only unfortunate part of this, is the fact that I never finish them.💀
They always get STUCK in the middle of something and there’s never an ending for them. I want to change that by doing some projects of mine I’ve been itching to get to. I’m only giving myself 3 for now.
TWST Character Resurrection:
A task where I revive my old TWST characters I abandoned by giving them new designs and backstories! Rekindling their relationships with one another while giving them a fresh new look at their personalities and how they became that way.
Also because there’s a lot of improvement that needs to be done with all of them.
The characters that are going to be resurrected are:
- Sullivan Laguna  - Kai Ramsey - Photios Diamandis - Malachi Fotea - Blaze
They can finally be free from the grave! Unfortunately, Raizel and Orval must stay inside the grave. May they rest in piece.
TWST Retro AU: 
A Twisted Wonderland alternate universe set in the 80’s where everyone can still use magic. Cable TV, the rise of different subcultures, rock bands, fun food courts and full of the bright youths of tomorrow trying to make a change in the world they live in. But, every dreamer has to have a start somewhere. And that all begins in High School. I’m still drafting some designs for the OG cast but this is definitely going to be the last project on my list of things I want to do this year. This is an AU I've been loving for quite sometime. So many clothing ideas and cliques/groups in here it's not even funny. Hopefully you guys will love it too.
The Melancholy Case of Kei Yoshihiko:
OK! This last project on the list, is the most biggest one by far. BUT! It will be so worth it. As you could probably tell from the header, I will be making something big for Kei. A birthday event that will have a few chapters and a possible new character to be added to the Ramshackle Dorm. The story will mostly focus on Kei feeling worthless, homeless and finally deciding to tell the truth about not actually being who he said he was, a detective.
I won't say too much as to not spoil what I'm trying to cook up. But as of right now, I have a very good feeling about this project. It may take a while and that's ok. <--- I'm coping.
Of course these projects will come out when they come out. I wouldn't dare give myself a schedule because I know for a fact that I would not make it. I need to pace myself and not force the creativity out. I'm really excited and passionate about this. EVEN IF IT TAKES SOME TIME THESE WILL BE FINISHED! That's all! \( ̄▽ ̄)/

Hello! I'm happy to announce I'm running #comicscarletwitchweek again, like last year from August 1st to August 7th. Unlike last year, the themes for every day are more loose, with very simple words for people to put any meaning they wish to. I will leave suggestions for what each day could represent, but these are only suggestions for anyone who might need a little inspiration or guide.
As always, this week is centered on Wanda's comic book appearances. MCU & MCU adjacent content is not what we're looking for & won't be reblogged. There is no expectation to participate in every day, this is merely a week to share your love for Wanda's comic book appearances!

Day 2, 2nd of August, Wednesday - Identity
definition; the fact of being who or what a person or thing is. Wanda has many idenities accumilated over the year; sister, wife, mother, teacher, and many more. This day offers an opportunity to explore one or more of her identities in whatever way you want to or to focus on one particular aspect of her. Wherever you want to focus on Wanda's identity with motherhood, the way her identity with herself has changed & evolved over the years, or a headcanon for her being queer, all are welcomed & accepted!
Day 3, 3rd of August, Thursday - Fairytale
definition; a short story that belongs to the folklore genre. This could entail Wanda reading a bedtime story to her children, Wanda reimagined in a fairy-tale based alternate universe, expanding on the Wanda's depicted in the Marvel: Fairy Tales series, Wanda dealing with some fictional creature from folklore or something else.
Day 4, 4th of August, Friday - Teamwork
definition; the collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal or to complete a task. This could be interpreted as making something for Wanda & your preferred team with her, or Wanda teaming up with another character, etc.
Day 5, 5th of August, Saturday - Family
definition; a group of persons united by the ties of marriage, blood, or adoption. Wanda has grown an expansive family over the years, thanks in part to many retcons. Here, you can focus on her relationship with her brother, or the family she finds in the Avengers, or the family she & Vision build in Vision & the Scarlet Witch, or her various revolving door of parents.
Day 6, 6th of August, Sunday - Power
definition; ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something. Raul the Ghoul, updated with some more portraits.
Headcanons: he enjoys a wide variety of fancy hats, tho part of that is his self-consciousness about how his head looks. He’s self-conscious about his skin in general, but plays it off casual, like most things, preferring to take the path of least resistance in life.
Raul is rather intelligent, leading to a dry sense of humor that comes across as snark, but his kindness belies any real malice. He gets along well with every member of the band couriers companions, but he is the most open with Veronica. At first he was rather wary of Lily, due to his history at Black Mountain.
I’ll provide specific sources throughout the day as I find them, but all pictures are based on images of Danny Trejo, amazing VA of Raul.

I'm still sort of irritated about not managing to get to Stockholm for one show a couple of months ago, largely for disability reasons. Extra shitty, since I wouldn't have hesitated to hop on a train for that otherwise. Wouldn't have minded poking around Stockholm again either, with no particular itinerary.
But, there's not that excuse for another one that I just saw is coming up next month:
Explicitly listing the planned timetable for each act involved struck me as just amusingly Swedish.
At the one main "alternative" venue here in town (as in, about 15 minutes away on the bus that stops right out front), which I have been meaning to check out anyway. They do get some decent acts there.
This one also features Trubbel, plus a few other bands I'm not familiar with. Including a couple of local ones I should probably check out. (Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Hjelle might also be there, if not performing this time. Because local music scenes.)
Plan B's accessibility info also looks decent, even if someone did decide to use a pic of some shitty hospital transport chair in the header. From what I have seen of the place, wouldn't necessarily anticipate anybody trying to stick me in some substandard designated area back in a corner where you can't see anything, as soon as I rolled up. They certainly don't mention anything like that, not that I would be inclined to cooperate too well anyway.
Hell, this is about as wild as I've seen crowds there get (not even kidding); my grouchy middle-aged crip ass would most likely be comfortable enough right up front. Probably just as well that I've just about had my fill of pit action over the years anyway, is all I can say. Maybe you'd have better luck finding that across the bridge in Copenhagen, I really couldn't say at this point.
But yeah, glad to see a decent more accessible opportunity I'm interested in which doesn't require much travel, the way things have been. Says person who used to need to drive at least 4 hours to get to most shows they were interested in--but also was better set up to do that, in just about every respect but spare time and money. Got more of both at my disposal these days, so just about everything else gets more complicated!

Melanie studied nursing at Charlotte Memorial Hospital and was top of her class. After that, she went right into a nursing job there in the maternity ward, but she took shifts in the ER for extra money when she could. That prepared her for the war. After the war, she goes back to labor and delivery, finding more hope in seeing new life come into the world. But after a brief tour in Korea training new nurses, and having a fourth child, Melanie decides she would rather focus on her family, and chooses to be a stay-at-home wife and mother.

I have a whole pinterest board of clothes for Melanie, believe it or not, lol. But her style is simple. She gravitates more toward pastel colors like pinks and blues and lilacs, and she is almost always wearing a skirt or a dress (at least until the late 50s, when cigarette pants are more acceptable), unless she's gardening, when she wears overalls. For accessories, Melanie only wears her wedding band, earrings, and a brooch if the outfit calls for it.

“I’m sorry, Lip, you’ve gotta come off the pitch,” she told him. 
He met her gaze. “They aren’t gonna sub me out, are they?” 
He cast a nervous glance over to the sideline, where Shifty was warming up, loosening his hips and stretching his legs.
“That’s Coach Winters’ call,” she answered with a shrug. “But that was a nasty hit you took, and you’ve been down for too long. We’ve gotta check for a concussion.” 
“This is what I get for trying headers at the goal,” Lip sighed and shook his head in disbelief. 
She smiled and offered her hand, which he took. With the help of Roe, they got him to his feet and they helped him over to the sideline, where fans in their Toccoa FC kits cheered him on.

SECRETS TO 6 AND 12 CYLINDER HEADER DESIGN
Hope you are enjoying these articles on exhaust header design. Building headers from mandrel-bent stainless tubing using proper fabrication techniques is important, but proper header design is crucial. Last month, we considered 180 degree exhaust headers for V-8s. As discussed, the 180 degree concept was developed to help even out the exhaust pulses from an uneven firing 90 degree crank V-8 in order to broaden the engine power band. The concept was very successful as illustrated by the Ford GT40 racecars of the 60’s. This month, I’d like to focus on exhaust headers on V-12 and six cylinder engines. It should be noted that six-cylinder and 12-cylinder engines are inherently balanced and even firing. That is, for an inline-six (I-6) cylinder engine, the firing order is such that cylinders fire alternating between the front 3 and rear three cylinders with a separation of 120 degrees (720/6). The cylinders of a V-6, engine, typically arranged in a 60 degree “V”, fire in an alternating fashion between banks also with 120 degree separation. A V-12 is essentially two I-6s (or two V-6s) joined together at the hip, with cylinders firing in an alternating fashion from bank-to-bank separated by 60 crank degrees (720/12). The melodical sound of a Ferrari V-12 is testimony to the even firing nature of these engines. Typically, I-6 exhausts are setup as two 3-1 headers. The front 3 cylinders are combined into one collector and the rear 3 into another. A V-6 engine normally has a 3-1 collected system on each bank. A V-12 typically has two such setups (4 x 3-1 headers). In many cases, the 3-1’s are combined into a final 2-1 resulting in a single exhaust pipe from each bank of 6 cylinders. With this exhaust setup, the exhaust pulses into each 3-1 collector for all these combinations are separated by 240 crank degrees. The exhaust pulses are far apart and do not compete for flow area in the collector allowing for a relatively small collector outlet and resultant increased power band. Also, unlike the 180 degree configuration necessary on the 90 degree V-8s, the header packaging is straight forward. It should be noted that some V-6 engines are considered “odd-fire” engines, most notably the Buick V-6 of the late 60s and 70s. Some of these engine designs have Offset-journal crankshaft been used in racing including the USAC, SCCA Trans Am and IMSA series during the 70s and early 80s. These engines have a 90 degree angle between banks, like a V-8. It has been rumored that these engines were derived from V-8 castings with two cylinders removed. One of the engine designs used a crank with three journals separated by 120 degrees. So, similar to what happens with a Harley V-twin, the cylinders fire at odd intervals. These became known in some circles as “shakers.” In this case, the cylinder firing-interval sequence is 90-150-90-150-90-150. In order to minimize the vibration of 90 degree V-angle, another design used an “offset-rod-journal” crank, resulting in a 108-132-108-132-108-132 sequence. This arrangement was smoother, but less reliable for racing due to the narrower journals required for the design. Though these 90 degree V-6 arrangements required unique distributor arrangements and fuel injection sequences, it had little effect on the design of the exhaust. If you notice, the exhaust pulses firing into each collector is still 240 degrees. For example, for the common journal crank motor, bank 1 fires, then 90 degrees later, bank 2 fires and 150 degrees later, bank 1 fires again, resulting in 240 degrees between cylinder firing into each collector. (i.e. 90+150=240). Likewise, for the “offset-journal crank”, 108 + 132 = 240 degrees. Theoretically, if there was an X-pipe or Y-pipe used in this set-up, one might expect a “crowded condition” during the 90 degree firing separation. We have found in practice that the exhaust pulses appear to be “conditioned” passing through the first collector and having minimal effect at the X- or Y-pipe. So now that we have explained that a V-12 engine is an even-fire engine and does not require crossing header tubes across the V-bank, get a load of this set of 180 degree headers on a V-12! Many years ago, Jack Burns developed and fabricated a set of 180 degree headers for a drag boat powered by a 396 cid Jaguar V-12 – essentially 3 x 4-1 headers. Ever curious, Jack wanted to see the effect of using a 180 degree firing separation on the performance of a V-12. The mounting of the engine in a circle-race boat made it an excellent candidate for this experiment as the header tubes could be taken over the top of the engine, above the intake stacks. This arrangement resulted in an odd arrangement of three megaphone collectors arranged over the top of the engine. The sound of the engine with the exhaust was described by some as sounding like the shriek of the legendary Matra V-12s Formula One cars of the 70s. IMSA GTP Group 44 Jaguar. To say the least, this boat turned some heads at the races. In fact, Bob Tullius, of Group 44 fame, caught wind of what Jack was doing and asked to try the headers on their dyno. What they found was a substantial increase in both torque and horsepower over what they had been running on the Group 44 Factory Racing IMSA GTP Jaguars. Obviously, this exhaust arrangement would not package well in the road race cars. Jack however consulted with the Group 44 engineers to develop a more conventional 12-into-4 arrangement that was a significant improvement over their previous exhaust header design. Returning to the Matra, one notices in this brilliant photo of a 1970 Matra MS11 F1 car that the French team had an even different idea in exhaust design. This 12-into-6 design explains the unique sound of the Matra. It combines the first and sixth, second and fifth and the third and fourth cylinders of each bank into 2-1 collectors resulting in three tailpipes per bank. Jack’s V-12 180’s went one step further and combined the cylinders across the banks into 4-1 collectors. It is therefore not surprising that the resultant acoustical signature of the two systems is similar.
