Three years ago, I was on the phone with a health coach, and I was putting my foot all the way down.
This phone call was part of a program that feels—and felt even at the time—like some kind of miracle. My health insurance company (which has since stopped covering California residents) called me up at the beginning of the year to ask if I wanted to participate in a coaching program designed for people with autoimmune disorders. The concept of the program was not to diagnose or prescribe, but to search out the small daily irritants that add up to higher inflammatory responses in people like me. “You may not be allergic to corn,” the health coach said during our first phone call, “but we can find out if it makes you feel a tiny bit worse, so you can make strategic decisions about what you eat and when.”
The program lasted for a year, and was fully covered by my insurance program. I logged everything I ate and drank, all the medications and supplements I took, and all my symptoms, every day. Each week, I spoke with the health coach, who looked at correlations between all the data I handed her and suggested things like a week without sugar, a week of increased hydration, and gentle tweaks to supplements. If things didn’t work, we left them behind; if they seemed to make me feel better, we experimented more. It was a year of experimentation alongside a dedicated, focused study partner, trying to figure out what small changes we could make that might add up to increased function.

no actually you’re either gentle parenting your child or you’re being emotionally and/or physically abusive to them, whether or not you’re aware of that.
because the term gentle parenting already includes discipline and teaching your kid right from wrong. gentle parenting doesn’t mean you can’t tell your kid no. it means you can tell them no when they do something they shouldn’t, but instead of punishing or yelling at them, you’re explaining and giving them reasons why they can’t do that, you are helping them learn and encouraging them to be better. gentle parenting means you’re using reasons built on mutual respect instead of anger. because yes, no matter how young your child is, they deserve respect too.
I’m sorry but most of the times when someone says they’re a strict parent, what it means is that they give their child childhood trauma that’ll last a lifetime, whether or not they’re aware of it. especially parents who brag to other people about how strict they are and how they punished their children.
and I’m sorry but saying you have a short temper is never an excuse to be emotionally and/or physically abusive towards your kid either.
“I yelled at you because I have a short temper” then why am I the one suffering? if you can’t control your anger, then get help. work on it. do better. be better.
also… your child standing up for themself against you, when you’re being abusive to them, isn’t them being disrespectful towards you. it means they are defending themself because you wouldn’t do that for them and so they had to step in and be their own protector.
if you’re a parent and can defend and stand up for yourself when you feel like you need to, but at the same time punish your kid when they stand up for themself against you, then you are the problem.
I was that child and I’m gonna make it as simple as I can for any parent out there — because no kid deserves to go through what I went through — imagine yourself owning a dog. really. you can either
a.) beat that dog whenever they do something wrong and simply take your anger out on them until they’re fully submissive and are terrified of you
or
b.) train them with love and gentleness and earn their love and loyalty in return
now imagine both A and B dogs on leashes and imagine them no longer being on leashes one day. which dog do you think will run away as far as they can and never look back, and which one do you think will stay because they love and want to be with their owner?

I got out for my walk to the beach. 🌊 Smoked a joint. It definitely made me feel a lot better. I feel like I’ve been walking around on the verge of tears, lately. I know it’ll pass. It always does.
It was super windy.

The strain of weed I smoked gave me the munchies by the time I got home. This is good because I’m never hungry. Anyway, the waves were crashing pretty hard. Was awesome. Next time, I’ll be bringing my little fold up chair and will sit for a while. There’s a bench but it’s not directly on the beach. Plus, it’s also always wet. Even on dry days. Don’t know what’s up with that.
As of tomorrow it’ll be 2 weeks since my Zometa infusion and the pain is getting worse not better. Very infuriating. Been stuck to my new heating pad and Voltaren ointment. Hopefully the increase in pain just means it’s working and strengthening them bones. 💪🏻
As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I volunteer for an organization that facilitates workshops for chronic pain, chronic conditions, cancer and diabetes. I’ve co-facilitated over half a dozen workshops now. They also provide one-to-one health coaching to participants for up to 13 weeks with an option for an extension for another 13. I’m also a volunteer coach. My participant wants an extension so I’m glad they find me helpful enough where they want to keep going. I’m also excited because I got an email confirming my registration while giving me all the information for the Master Trainer program coming up in a few weeks. What is the Master Trainer program you ask? This is for those who are already co-facilitating and want to train the facilitators. I think this is super cool, but I’m not exactly the coolest person so take that with a grain of salt. This is also a fairly expensive course that they’re sponsoring me for. (I had to be recommended by my coordinator). I’m a little nervous but mostly thrilled. I really love this organization and I think they’re doing wonderful things that are helping so many people. Volunteering for me is a necessity. I feel like I’m giving back, meeting new people, learning new things and being productive. Who doesn’t want to feel like all those things? I wish I could go back to work but this is the next best thing. I actually hope to find something locally where Ella and I can volunteer together. It could help boost her self confidence while gaining some valuable skills. Once she’s settled into her second semester, I will be looking into that for her.
Anyway, today was a good day. Got some things checked off my to-do list so I’m happy. Tomorrow I have my comedy class but I’m not sure if I’m going to go. Sitting in front of a computer for 3 hours over Zoom may be debilitating at the moment. I’ll see. I really hope to do some stand up comedy shows this year that are in-person. I did quite a few Zoom shows last year but only one was in person. Loved it but it was right after the mask mandate was lifted and being stuck in a room with over a hundred people with no masks when numbers were skyrocketing was a bit unnerving for me. I’m hoping I can do a few over the summer. When cold/flu season isn’t haywire. 😷
This weekend looks like rain so other than small, short walks, Ella and I will be working on maybe doing a craft together. I got a shrinky dinks kit so we may try that. Been forever since I made shrinky dinks. I just like saying shrinky dinks. 🤪 We may also watch a movie and play a game. She’s been bugging me for the last month to play Monopoly. The game that never ends. 😂 We’ll see.
