Cat in the Hat:
"The German Health Minister gave an important update on the Covid situation yesterday.
I’ve written up the section of his speech from the video below for easy reading.
It’s immensely refreshing to see a government minister warning of the harms of Covid in such a transparent way."

Prof. Karl Lauterbach
Health Minister, Germany
4 December 2023
"This second (long Covid) round table was very interesting, lasting three and a half hours. It serves as a unique forum for dialogue among scientists, researchers and those affected by long Covid, facilitating the exchange of ideas.
There are many new findings about long Covid. Not all of them are good news. One piece of not-so-good news concerns the fact that long Covid is actually still a problem for those who are newly infected. One estimate that has been put forward is that the risk of contracting long Covid now, even after vaccination, is around 3%. Now you may say, "that's not such a big risk" , but there are tens of thousands of people who are repeatedly affected in a short period of time. And so, the long Covid problem has not yet been solved.
We have also established that there really are many subgroups of long Covid and that we do not yet have a cure. And it was clearly pointed out that we are also dealing with problems here that will challenge society as a whole, because vascular diseases often occur after long Covid. Throughout Europe, we are currently seeing an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease in the middle-age group - from 25 to 50. This is associated with the consequences of Covid infections.
We also very often find cognitive impairment in older people. And one participant pointed out that it may well be like the Spanish flu, where 20 years after the Spanish flu there was a significant increase in Parkinson's disease and probably also dementia.
This is something we must pay attention to, as the past infection afiects how the immune system in the brain functions, as well as the brain's blood vessels, potentially increasing the long-term risk of these major neurodegenerative diseases. This is why we need to conduct very intensive research. This research has played a major role.
What is the overall assessment of the situation now?
We have to be careful. Long Covid is not curable at the moment. We also know that over 40% of those who have several manifestations of long Covid, for example, five or more, still have symptoms after 2 years, so it doesn't seem to heal spontaneously. We also know that those whose symptoms are more pronounced at the beginning are less likely to heal.
So some of what we know from the demographics of long Covid has been confirmed, and we now know more precisely which mechanisms in the brain, but also in the blood vessels and the immune system, are responsible for this. Professor Scheibenbogan will explain this briefly later.
At this point, I can only say the following - this is particularly important to me:
First of all, long Covid is a disease that stays with us and that we cannot yet cure. And we are seeing an increasing number of cases as the waves of infection continue to affect us.
Secondly, Covid is not a cold - with a cold, you don't usually see any long-term effects. You don't see any changes in the blood vessels. You don't usually see an autoimmune disease developing. You also don't usually see neurological inflammation - these are all things that we see with long Covid. Therefore, one should not assume that Covid infection is just a common cold. It can affect brain tissue and the vascular system, and we still lack an effective treatment, making these studies crucial.
Significantly, we know that the risk of long Covid decreases when you're infected but have been vaccinated. That's why it's concerning that only 3 million people have been vaccinated with the new, adapted vaccine. That is a very bad result.
Please protect yourself from severe infections.
Please protect yourself from long Covid.
Currently, the danger posed by Covid is indeed being underestimated. Nothing is worse than infecting someone at Christmas who then becomes seriously ill and may not fully recover."

COIMBATORE/CHENNAI: Health Minister Ma Subramaniam on Wednesday allayed fears about the chances of the Nipah virus spreading in Tamil Nadu. Addressing media persons at Nilgiris, a day after Nipah deaths were confirmed in neighbouring Kerala, the minister said the health department has started to screen people entering the state from Kerala at border checkposts in six districts including Coimbatore, Tenkasi and Kanniyakumari.
“Treatment will be given to people who show fever symptoms and people in Tamil Nadu need not fear the virus,” the minister said. He visited Gudalur to lay the foundation stone for a 200-bed block on the Gudalur taluk hospital premises.
“Based on the Chief Minister MK Stalin’s order, The state government has taken up construction of 25 district headquarters hospitals including the six newly upgraded district headquarters hospitals at a total cost of `1100 crore,” the minister said.
According to sources in the health department fever surveillance commenced at Walayar on the TN- Kerala border and medical camps were being conducted through Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam volunteers in villages along the Kerala border.
Health department sources said all government hospitals and private hospitals have been instructed to report details of fever patients to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) portal. “If patients present with symptoms of Acute Encephalitis syndrome should report to the health department,” said P Aruna Deputy Director of Health Services.
Officials on high alert
Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine briefed all deputy directors of health services on the prevention and control of Nipah virus infection, stepping up vigil in the districts bordering Kerala. In his circular, Dr. T S Selvavinayagam, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, instructed all the deputy directors of health services (DDHS) to deploy health teams at border check posts that work round the clock to screen all symptomatic cases, and provide them with the protective equipment required.
Tenkasi district administration begins round-the-clock fever screening at Kerala border
TENKASI: After Kerala reported two cases of Nipah virus deaths, the district administration began a round-the-clock fever screening centre at the Puliyarai check post on Wednesday.
District Collector D Ravichandran and Deputy Director (DD) of Health Service PR Muralisankar inspected the ongoing screening works. “Three teams of health inspectors and domestic breeding checkers are checking the body temperatures of passengers and drivers of buses, cars, vans, and trucks. Those who have a fever are being referred to government hospitals (GHs), where the staff has been requested to update the DDs if they are treating any fever cases in the district,” said an official.
In a letter to the DDs on Wednesday, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine said health teams should be deployed at border check posts 24x7 to screen all symptomatic cases with necessary protective equipment, especially in The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Theni, Tenkasi and Kanniyakumari.
“Strengthen the surveillance on Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (fever with altered sensorium) (AES). People with symptoms of AES admitted from the border districts of Kerala, especially from Kozhikode and Malappuram, should be followed up. The government and major private hospitals should be alerted to the Nipah virus outbreak and instructed to ensure timely notification of AES cases to the district surveillance officers through the IDSP-IHIP portal,” the letter read.
Symptoms
Fever, altered mental status, severe weakness, headache, respiratory distress, cough, vomiting, muscle pain, convulsion, diarrhoea
In infected people, Nipah virus causes severe illness characterised by inflammation of the brain or respiratory diseases
Measures of prevention
Wash hands with soap and water after coming in contact with a sick person/animal
Avoid consuming raw date palm sap or toddy
Consume only washed fruits

End Of Terror Meeting with Politician, Welsh Senedd Member, John Griffiths MS
Today, after four years of campaigning, I finally met with Welsh Assembly Member, John Griffiths AM. John is my local political representative in the Welsh Assembly. Two former insiders at Canada’s drug price regulator testified Tuesday that interference from federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos raised questions about the government’s closeness to the pharmaceuticals industry and jeopardized efforts to control spiralling prescription drug prices.
Douglas Clark, the executive director of the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board, told the House of Commons health committee on Tuesday that he was taken aback when Mr. Duclos sent a letter in November asking the agency to suspend its public consultations on price reforms. Mr. Clark said such a suspension was “precisely what the industry had called for.”
“To say that I was surprised by that letter would be an understatement, and its content was of grave concern to me, my senior staff and our general counsel,” Mr. Clark said. It was his first public statement since announcing his resignation in February. He will remain executive director until June 1, but is on leave from the role.
Mr. Duclos told the committee last week that he was obligated to ask the PMPRB to consider suspending the consultation to ensure he and other stakeholders could take the time to understand its ramifications. He has said the letter was not an order. Nevertheless, the PMPRB suspended its consultation soon after receiving it.

Not Many Influenza Cases But Will Conduct Early Screening: Delhi Health Minister
Addressing a press conference, he said though the peak of seasonal influenza is usually over by March, many cases are being registered this time in parts of the country.
Tumblr media
New Delhi: Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Friday said the city government has directed authorities to conduct early screening to detect cases of influenza in the national capital.
Addressing a press conference, he said though the peak of seasonal influenza is usually over by March, many cases are being registered this time in parts of the country.
Mr Bharadwaj also said that the city government has no plan for making masks mandatory. The focus is on taking precautionary measures such as avoiding public places, washing hands etc, he added.
"People who have had severe asthma or Covid are among those impacted the most by influenza. Extra precaution is needed for those aged above 65, children below five years of age and those suffering from lung diseases," he said.
The Delhi health minister said the Centre has issued Covid advisory for six states, but Delhi is not on the list. "However, we are issuing an advisory to check the spread of influenza. The precautionary measures to be followed in case of influenza and Covid are the same," Mr Bharadwaj said.
"Instructions have been issued to district surveillance units, health facilities, and government hospital authorities to monitor the situation on a daily basis. All districts have been asked to ensure early screening to detect cases," he said.
Mr Bharadwaj said there are not many influenza cases in Delhi hospitals and the situation is being monitored closely.
The government will issue advertisements in newspapers and on FM radio channels to create awareness, the health minister said.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said that the rise in influenza cases is due to the Influenza A subtype H3N2 virus.
The H3N2 virus is leading to more hospitalisations than other subtypes. The symptoms include a runny nose, persistent cough, and fever.

this adds to the argument that people of taipei are idiots for not electing the former health minister as mayor in the recent midterm election. taiwan’s covid19 pandemic measures were so well done that despite of sabotages by incompetent mayor, taipei averted catastrophic crisis that is now unfolding in china.
