big recommendation for transparent sticky notes, especially for anyone doing health-sci! using them to trace is one of the best uses of them. i’m pretty lucky that i’m allowed cheat sheets for some of my exams, so these make it a little tidier, but they’re great for making notes in your textbooks and notebooks as well!

i use these ones from aliexpress; i have a squared one and a more vertical, rectangular one and i find they do the job pretty well!

Publications and Procrastination

In 6 months I have reviewed over 400 peer-reviewed papers and analysed all the available literature that focuses on the use of cannabidiol (CBD) within the autistic population; and yes! I have encountered some hurdles that I didn't think would happen to me (perfectionist ego everyone!).
When I originally submitted my research proposal to the university for review I intended to have my systematic review of reviews completed and published within four months. It's now mid-July and boy! I was wrong! I was very optimistic to say the least and now I have a publication to submit for review and my confirmation of candidature due by the end of August.
So why? Why a systematic review? and why a systematic review of reviews? Let me elaborate . . . .
Research studies are assigned levels of evidence based on their methodology, the pyramid displays this hierarchy of evidence. Systematic reviews are the strongest evidence and most reliable source of filtered information within the research community. So naturally it was where I chose to begin, by reviewing all the literature relating to CBD and ASD.
Now, I had a lot of personal matters that affected my progress in completing my publication and emotional burnout is something I didn't expect! Life happens right? I had been productive and successful in the past with my studies. Nope! not this time. My emotional burnout lead to decreased motivation, decision fatigue, increased procrastination and cramming.
Unfortunately, in 2021 I was involved in a workplace incident that has affected my physical and mental health well into 2022. A close family-member was diagnosed to be terminal and earlier this year I spit with my fiancé of three years. All of these personal events lead to period of extreme emotional burnout. So I would like to share with my fellow academics some of the ways in which I have navigated my way through emotional burnout in HDR.
Contact your primary supervisor, explain your situation and ask for advice.
Identify 'office hours' for your research, treat it like a job!
Revise your project timeline and make adjustments with support from your primary supervisor.
Contact the HDR at your university to extend deadlines, such as confirmation of candidature, progress reports and submission deadlines.
Micro-task your to do list into a must-do for each day.
Identify the best time of the day for productivity and write during this time - write that publication - write your thesis - write that protocol.
Be kind to yourself . . . . from my experience everyone wants to see you succeed in your post-grad journey.
So be kind to yourself and cut yourself some slack, post-grad is a marathon not a sprint. If you are a post-grad student, supervisor or a student considering post-grad studies or you are interested in my research. You can reach out via my instagram @studywithmaddi or through email - [email protected]

Week 3- Art And My Major
For this week's art activity we had to focus on an activity that went hand in hand with our major. In my case, I had to focus on how art and community health could correlate. As I was researching, I came across lots of murals and paintings that depicted community health and wellness but I wanted to do something different. This led me to realize that art does not have to be singular, regarding only drawing and painting, but instead I can focus on different structures of art.
Last semester I took an art class that revolved around focusing on art outside of the United States and I chose Mexico City. In my research, I came across an artist by the name of Pedro Reyes. He had an inspiring take on art. The piece or exhibition that he created was called "People's United Nation" or pUN for short. This artistic expression welcomed 193 regular citizens from their respected countries and throughout a few weekends, the delegates get to represent their countries in group activities. Essentially this event allows the delegates to speak on current or possible future issues that can occur in their country and in the groups the other delegates can help with coming up with solutions.
The art activity for this week can be either small and possible to complete in a week or large and takes more than a week to complete. So taking inspiration from Pedro Reyes's event, I would like to do something similar on a smaller scale but would take more than a week to accomplish. I have two possible scenarios, the first being an event where local schools decide on "student delegates" to represent their local communities. The second scenario is much larger in which the event would revolve around larger separate communities choosing local delegates, it could be local residents or someone in office, regardless of the scenario. The purpose would be to discuss the local disparities that affect the population of each respected community and come up with possible solutions. The difference would be that the school scenario would focus on the younger population and the community scenario would focus on the community as a whole. The event itself would only be one day.
This "activity" would take more than a week because of all the confirmation that must be met by multiple parties. Some approvals can take up to a month or longer to be confirmed. It would also require lots of resources such as a furnished venue to host the event, proposals to encourage discussion, willing delegates, approvals from parents and school boards if the first scenario is chosen, and information/data about each represented community so that accurate information will be discussed...etc. The research must be done to provide accurate proposals and information, meaning we would have to look into each community thoroughly. This art excursion would need many approvals and confirmation so depending on which scenario we would have to speak with multiple parties whether with the school district or the board of directors of a community. Because of the scale of this project, we would have problems in actually pulling it off. Getting willing delegates and approvals/ permission would also be an issue. Having inaccurate information/ misinformation could also hinder the reason for this event. To gauge the effectiveness of the event, a possible method would be pre/post tests of a community sample and see if there is a change from the solutions provided in the event if any. Time is a big issue here because the post-tests would have to be given at a proper time when enough time has passed to implement the solutions.
Overall, I believe that art and my major have a positive overlap. Not only by encouraging murals but also by possible events to discuss issues with communities and provide solutions for such issues. Together, my major and art can have a positive impact on a communities health and wellness by depicting positivity, support, and community encouragement.

Do you all remember those amounts of physical exercise we are supposed to do*, but never manage to?
We are now supposed to do more of them 🤣🤣
*150 minutes. Ie. 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
We should now do 300 minutes according to Science. Which doesn't even include the 2 days of recommended strength training!! Except that we need people to do AnY exercise more than they are. Doubling it to an even bigger number is not going to help! It makes people feel hopeless and give up before they have even tried!! Counter productive rubbish, if you ask me.
Sure, 300 could be the real data driven number, but the general public needs to feel hope? A sense of achievement?
If this freaks you out, and you like me are not very active, try to do a tiny bit extra. Take the stairs, walk to work, do some gardening, I dunno. you don't need a gym.

A type of flu virus that used to sicken people every year hasn't been spotted anywhere on Earth since March 2020. As such, experts have advised that the apparently extinct viruses be removed from next year's flu vaccines. The now-extinct viruses were a branch of the influenza B family tree known as the Yamagata lineage. Scientists first reported the apparent disappearance of Yamagata viruses in 2021. At that time, experts speculated that precautions taken to stop the spread of COVID-19 — such as masking and social distancing — had not only driven the overall number of flu cases to historic lows but may have completely snuffed out this type of flu virus.
