Fire season is here!
I know this is from the Washington State DNR, but like. please can we not set ANY of the states or counties or cities or towns or municipalities or villages or census designated places on fire either? and not just today, but for the entire future?
Tumblr media
this is the current map of drought intensity in the PNW. It's not terrible, but the forecast for this weekend leading up to the 4th is blazing. (map from here)

Look, I don't talk about Climate Change very often, A because plenty of other people better cover the issue than I ever could, and B because establishment of the Democratic Party along with the Liberal establishments of most European countries, are using Climate Change to push an agenda of artificial food scarcity to raise prices and I personally believe, to ensure the poorest among us are too busy fighting for scraps of food to fight the Capitalist Class.
They don't ask the US Military, the largest polluter on the planet to make cuts, they don't ask the Fossil Fuel companies to make cuts, they're not asking the elites flying in private jets to make cut backs, no they ask us, the workers to cut back, or they ask the farmers to make do with fewer animals at a time when small and medium farms are in crises, completely unable to compete with large Corporate factory farms who, for all intents and purposes own the regulators and literally write the regulatory laws themselves.
I won't play along with this kind of attack on the working class under the guise of Climate Change.
But all that being said, ITS FUCKING HOT OUT THERE. This shit just isn't normal.
Last week we had a day with a heat index pushing 130°F, yesterday's was about 120°F and today a bit more mild at only 115°F.
At Persian Gulf Airport in Iran reached a heat index of 152°F on July 16th.
And it seems it's not getting any better this week:

heat tips i learned living in Saudi Arabia and continue to use living in florida: take a length of cotton that can go 2.5x around your neck, sew into a tube, then sew a seam across ~6cm from one end, fill 1/3 with water beads, sew matching seam ~6cm from other end. soak, and refrigerate. tie around your neck. it starts off cool, and because the water evaporates slowly it keeps you cool longer. if no one in your house feels up to sewing you can line a sock with pantyhose and do p much the same thing, then you can either put it in a longer sock or the other side of the pantyhose to tie on, or just place it on sports where veins are close to the surface. cool off the blood, cool off the you. also, please make sure you're getting enough salt, it helps with rehydration! cool/frozen water heavy fruits with salt (esp with also lime and chili if you like a little spice) is chefs kiss and helps with cooling and hydration. also any liquid is better than no liquid, soda will not dehydrate you and sports drinks are literally made for rehydration just don't wanna overdo them, like 1 a day is good. if it's too hot but you can't sleep without covers, take a spray bottle and spray your sheet lightly, then sleep with just the damp sheet, again evaporative cooling. also if you can get a fan (handheld or electric) the moving air does so much more than you would think! also if you start to get dizzy or faint from the heat that's heat stroke, cool the head first (literally put an ice pack on your head) and then cool your core (alternate ~10 minutes ice pack on head then tummy)
thank you for the advice! I've been doing things that are similar but that's a cool use of water beads I'd never thought of doing that :O

I want people who don’t believe in global warming to kill themselves. This is NEVER normal for my region.
You know its bad if my summer loving ass hates it.

Sorry all, I was in cold hibernation yesterday due to the heatwave, though I still managed to fall under heat stress despite my best efforts.
I'll go through everyone's messages about the proposed demo update today.
To those under the oppression of rising temperatures, wherever you are in the world:
Drink lots of water based fluids (water, juice, diluted squash).
Do not sun bathe. Even with sun cream on. A nice tan is not worth heat stress, or even worse, heat stroke.
Do not have BBQ's. Honestly, half the fires I've read about this morning are due to people cooking out on tinder-box grass. Cook indoors and bring your food out if you really want to. Don't put yourself or others at risk for the sake of slightly charred burgers or sausages.
Be aware (especially in the UK) that the sea might be colder than you expect. Don't jump in without acclimatising yourself to the water temperature.
If you smoke, use an ashtray and soak the ashes before disposing of them. Everything is so dry (at least where I am), and one little spark can cause a whole lot of damage.
Monitor yourself and others around you for signs of heat stroke. Do not hesitate to take action. Heat stroke can kill.
Keep your body cool. Splash cold (not icy) water in your face and across the back of your neck. Eat ice cream. Drink cool drinks. Lie indoors on the floor (heat rises, so it will typically be cooler on ground level). Try and keep hot air out of your house or place of work. If your home gets too hot, go to a public library, typically, even in the UK, they have air conditioning.
Lastly, do not treat excessively warm temperatures as a novelty. According to a report by Public Health England over 2,000 people died due to heat related causes in 2020. This year is expected to be much higher.
PSA over.
Please try to stay safe everyone.

Hey Portlandeers!
Next week is looking pretty gross. Be prepared.
Also, consider taking frozen water bottles with you when you go out, for anyone who might be out on the streets right now.
That person with the sign on the corner isn't out there by choice when it's 100°.
No matter how you feel about giving them cash, water is not on the same level.

08/21/23: Guys I am so ready for fall. Here in Missouri, it has been insanely hot. The highs for this week are all over 100 degrees F. Which I am beyond done with. The humidity only makes the heat worse. I can't get out to take my daily walks and exercise because it's too hot and seems to interact badly with the medication I am on for my anxiety. Staying inside all the time makes me feel like a trapped rat. My toddler just wants to run and play but it's too hot for him, too. I am dreaming of pumpkin patches and apple cider. We'll get there soon, I hope.

Maaan if we don’t start investing in detoxing the atmosphere here pronto ion know how tf they think they gone keep us incentivized to give a fuck bout working or money. On god. What’s it gonna be worth or for anymore fr when these heatwaves surpass their current quality? When it’s like this year round? What’s gonna be the point? They refuse to pay ppl their worth as is to even have a real quality of life (much less dedicate our energy to cleaning the environment). We are seriously running out of time. I do not understand how we’re not having more prevalent, vehement conversations ab this. The world is on actual fire; it’s only getting even more dangerously hot. You have to pay for water. Food & rent are climbing in expense w no end in sight. There is a biased shortage on housing. Homelessness is skyrocketing. The climate has changed everywhere. Globally. By alarming, sweltering degrees.
We are killing the planet. We are destroying ourselves. We’re killing everything else here, too. Everyone’s distracted. The hysteria & devastation we are in for, Jesus Christ. Y’all better pay attention. It literally did not feel like this outside just a few short years ago. I mean Summertime’s always been hot but. Pay a-fucking-tention. There’s something terribly, terribly wrong here. And it’s only gonna get worse.

Alrighty fellow Europeans, allow me to share my best keeping cool in bed tip.
Freeze a hot water bottle.
Seriously. Don't fill it all the way - half will do it. Just put some cold water in it, put it in the freezer when you get up, and by the time you go to bed, you have yourself a nice, cold slab of ice to sleep with. Wrap it in a towel to keep it from getting the bedding wet👍
