🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction?
[ask meme]
Good timing on this question: normally I say I wrote my first fanfic in my 8th grade Creative Writing elective class, BUT I just the other day remembered that in 5th (maybe 4th?) grade, I wrote a book report on Island of the Aunts by Eva Ibbotson in the form of carefully in-character journal entries by the 2 child characters, recounting the events of the book. Which is objectively fanfiction!
So the answer is apparently: I got into writing fanfiction by the grace of extremely loose, creativity-encouraging instructions on how to write a book report, circa 2004-05.

you know I love per adua ad astra....
Oh, interesting choice! Thank you, a lot of love and excitement went into that one.
(For those who don't know, per ardua ad astra is a long Star Wars fic that is almost but not quite finished, in which Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi escape Scarif only to get caught in the Death Star's tractor beam and forced to pass themselves off as Imperials while trapped on the Death Star.)

top 5 plants, pics please :)
*wakes up in a cold sweat remembering I got this ask ages ago and was like "I'll answer that when I can search for photos more easily on my laptop" and then forgot about it*
Ahem.
5. Water lilies/lotuses
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Definitely some of the most magical flowers/plants in the world. Also a particular soft spot for giant lily pads, because this is the Dream
Tumblr media
4. Mandrakes. Incredibly sexy-- poisonous, hallucinogenic, considered hugely magically potent in traditions across the world; they're pretty flowers and also just funky little dudes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Passion flowers. (Yeah, another flower, sue me.) There are a bunch of varieties of passion flowers, but they all look like jrpg enemies, and I love that for them
Tumblr media
2. Pitcher plants. No explanation necessary, just look at them.
Tumblr media
Moonflower cactus. Extra AF bitch from the Amazon that blooms once a year for one night and looks fabulous doing it.
Tumblr media
Bonus, because it's not a plant, but bracket fungus. I've been obsessed with them since playing Crash Bandicoot when I was still in the single digits. Who wouldn't want to just climb up them and hang out like a little apartment balcony?

[Original date: posted by me on 15 June 2019, but done much earlier—it looks like 2014]
I was looking over my old files and somehow never posted this one over here. I've always loved this picture of two of my protagonists, by @heckofabecca.

Fic Author Interview (meme)
I was tagged by the lovely @heckofabecca. Thanks, Becca :)
1- How many works do you have on AO3?
71...I honestly was a bit surprised it was that many. I guess I've had that account a while and it adds up! Almost all of them are oneshots, though.
2- What's your total AO3 word count?
204,091.
3- What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
They're all ATLA, which makes sense when you think about it. ATLA is probably the second-biggest fandom I've written for other than ASOIAF, but ASOIAF is so big it's sometimes hard to get noticed. That being said, when I sort by hits, three of the top five are ASOIAF so I guess more people are reading those and not liking them. It probably helps that my top-kudos ATLA fics are all Zuko-centric and he's one of the most popular ATLA characters in fic whereas I think the ASOIAF topics I focus on are perhaps a bit more niche.
tongued with fire (728 kudos)
i got soul, but i'm not a soldier (714 kudos)
cold fire (655 kudos)
we die with the dying; we are born with the dead (597)
the sword and the pen (577 kudos)
4- Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to! I'll respond to all comments on recently published fic (unless it's a hate comment, which I delete) and for older works I try to respond, especially if it's a substantive comment. I like to engage with readers, especially since I tend to write a lot of really niche fandoms and it's nice to connect with other fans.
5- What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
probably either another atla fic that's set right after ursa leaves zuko and azula behind or this big love fic which has an ending that is... not necessarily angsty for the narrator but super bleak in context.
6- What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
I don't typically write fluffy romantic fic (I usually do more bittersweet gen focused on family relationships) but I did when I participated in the Jaime/Brienne ship exchange a few times and this bakery-themed modern AU is probably my fluffiest/happiest ending. Exchanges are kind of fun because this is very much the type of fic I would not have ever written on my own.
7- Do you write crossovers?
I have not!
8- Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yes, lol. My Lannister twins genderswap fic was very controversial among a certain subset of fans who vocally disagreed with my characterization (I will sum this up as them basically believing that genderswapped Jaime would just be canon Cersei which...lol). That's the only fic I've ever got hate comments on, though I did get a really bizarre comment back in ninth grade on FF.net before I migrated to ao3 where the person enjoyed the fic but also used the comment to grandstand against abortion, a topic that in no way was mentioned in my fic. Sir This Is A Wendy's.
9- Do you write smut?
I do write sex scenes but I wouldn't describe them as smut because they're non-explicit and mostly like fade to black stuff.
10- Have you ever had a fic stolen?
YES LMFAOOOOOOOO SOMEONE TOOK A MULTICHAPTER FIC I WROTE ABOUT NINA AND OLEG FROM THE AMERICANS AND SELF-PUBLISHED IT ON AMAZON AS AN EBOOK.
11- Have you ever had a fic translated?
I think someone asked if they could translate one of my fics into another language but it was years ago and I don't remember if they did it or not or which fic it was or even which language it was.
12- Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, my first ever fic! Me and my best friend wrote it in sixth grade and it's an unfinished sequel to Ivanhoe. We never published it, though. It's really, really bad lol.
13- What's your all-time favorite ship?
Tony and Carmela Soprano. sorry. Not ship in the fandom sense but...relationship of all time. (I honestly tend to write for canon pairings that I want to build on, anyway). In the traditional sense of "wanting them to get together in canon", probably Jaime/Brienne.
14- What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
I honestly don't really have a lot of published WIPs, because I tend to do oneshots and if they're not ready they're just not published. Right now I do have a two-chapter Greek mythology/Iliad retelling I wrote in high school that is absolutely never going to get updated ever, but frankly I don't feel particularly strongly about finishing that. I did have an actual multichapter WIP with the Lannister genderswap fic that I really felt bad about not working on, but I finally finished it!
15- What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm good with dialogue and characterization! A lot of my fic focuses on precanon/younger versions of canon characters ("flashback fic") and I think I'm pretty good at developing backstories. Also if I may say so myself, I write decent prose.
16- What are your writing weaknesses?
Plotting, which is why I tend to do shorter character-study stories. I really struggle with doing actual plotlines. (This is also a problem in my original fiction, lol. I'm always like. Okay I have these fascinating people in an interesting setting. Now what the hell are they going to do).
17- What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
If it makes sense in context, like a bilingual character, sure. I do think it should probably be written so that it's clear what is going on to readers who only know the primary language of the fic, though.
18- What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Other than the aforementioned Ivanhoe sequel, it was Harry Potter.
19- What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?
Can't really think of anything!
20- What's your favorite fic you've written?
I'm very proud of the Lannister genderswap fic because it's probably my most significant achievement in terms of plotting, which as I mentioned is hard for me, and I'm really happy I returned to it after over a year's hiatus and finished it! I'm also really proud of this big love fic because I appreciate the effort I put into fleshing out the characters' world (including historical research) and I think it is a really good work of character study.
Tagging @when-did-this-become-difficult @ofhouseadama and anyone else who wants to do this, I can't think of many mutuals on here whose fanfiction output I'm particularly familiar with.

AO3 stats meme! tagged by @anghraine
Rules: Give us the links to your fics with the most hits, most kudos, most comments, most bookmarks, most words, and least words.
Most hits: The Debate of Bregor and Aegnor, a Silmarillion fic from 2013 in which Andreth's siblings finding out about her relationship with Aegnor and drama ensues. In one of the great mysteries of my fandom life, this fic has 9,068 hits - over two and a half times more than the fic with the second largest number of hits, which is for a much bigger fandom (asoiaf). It doesn't have a proportionately larger number of kudos than my other Silm stories. Maybe it's a glitch? Maybe there are a handful of people who reread it hundreds of times? I'll probably never know lol
Most kudos: Five Times Kareen Told Ezar the Truth and One Time She Didn't, a Vorkosigan fic that explores Kareen's relationship with Ezar from her marriage to his death, with 123 kudos. The Vorkosigan fandom on AO3 is very generous with feedback, more than any of other fandom I've written for :) I do also think this is one of my best fics, so it feels good that it has the most kudos.
Most comments: What We Are Allowed, which is basically Thick as Thieves from Laela's POV, has 45 comment threads and 62 comments total. This one has an advantage over the others because it's a multichapter fic and has a handful of regular readers who usually comment on updates <3
Most bookmarks: Blessed the Bride of Argos, the Agamemnon/Cassandra fic I wrote for Nonconathon 2021. According to the stats page it has 46 bookmarks, but when I actually open the fic it only shows 23 - I'm guessing the rest are private bookmarks? It's an E-rated noncon fic, so a lot of private bookmarks wouldn't be particularly surprising.
Most words: What We Are Allowed is incomplete but currently at 40,841 words. It's my longest writing project EVER and I'm extremely proud of myself for getting this far and updating relatively consistently (also I think it's a pretty good story).
Least words: Remember, another Silmarillion fic, with 376 words. It's about Morwen and Rian's relationship and also about Rian being a musical prodigy. I just reread it for the first time in ages and I think it holds up pretty well!

heckofabecca replied to your post: I think a lot about that person who replied to one...
p sure we used it [stand mixer] for brazilian cheese rolls on pesach too
Wait, hold on, it is very important I know what Brazilian cheese rolls are! Do you mean Pão de Queijo, or is it something else...?
I live a mile or so away from a Venezuelan bakery and am addicted to their golfeados, so definitely clarify, and maybe drop a recipe if your rolls turned out well!

playlist music meme
I was tagged by @anghraine in a playlist meme!
Here are the rules:
you can usually tell a lot about a person by the type of music they listen to. put your favorite playlist on shuffle and list the first ten songs then tag ten people! no skipping!
Not sure I’ll tag ten people at the end and my music taste varies depending on what I’m doing while listening to music, but I’ll go with my Akallabêth Campaign playlist which is very long and is a mix of instrumental / video game music + indie stuff + sea shanties.  It’s 8 hours and 20 minutes now of music and I did arrange each track with a sense of flow originally!  But I do listen to it on shuffle often.
1. The Devil & The Huntsman - Sam Lee, Daniel Pemberton (from the King Arthur: Legend of the Sword movie which has no business being as good and fun as it is!)
2. Leave Her Johnny - Seán Dagher, Nils Brown, Michiel Schrey (from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag which is a great video game soundtrack... Seán Dagher is my favorite singer in all the shanties for those games, what a great voice)
3. As It Was - Hozier (how long you would wait for me / how long I’ve been away...)
4. Lead Me Home - Jamie N Commons (YES this song is from the miserable zombie garbage show BUT it is infuriatingly catchy)
5. Muddy Waters - LP (will this person’s voice ever NOT wreck me? the answer seems to be no. LP, please teach me your secrets, I have such gender envy)
6. I’se the B’y That Builds the Boat - The Revels Chorus
7. Hobbit Tunes: Jigs N’ Reels, Live - The Tolkien Ensemble (there are no hobbits in the game, but this is TOO GOOD not to put on a Tolkien TTRPG playlist, okay?
8. Never Love an Anchor - The Crane Wives (It’s a secret I keep tucked inside my chest / With this heart of mine that’s guilty not remorseful)
9. The Labyrinth Song - Asaf Avidan (can it be that all us heroes have a path, but not a plan?)
10. The Ends of the Earth - Brian Tyler (another AC Black Flag song)
I’ve gotta tag my player @laurenplayspeople first and foremost (/blows kisses to you & Merrie), and then I’ll tag @eisoj5, @rain-sleet-snow, @rainbowchibbit, @sassysnowperson, @allatariel, @heckofabecca, @skatingthinandice, and @urcadelimabean... and whoever else wants to play!  No pressure either way.  I like music recommendations, so know that if you tag me in something I’m going to check it out!

Lady A—, a witch, and Miss R—, her companion
This was another lovely gift from my friend @heckofabecca, back in March of 2016 (i.e., just after my 30th birthday), illustrating the protagonists of my fantasy novel. The description is from Becca herself!
I originally replied:
This is really magnificent. I love that—well, you can see they’re getting their clothes from the same place while having completely polarized tastes, haha. Also, G’s side-eye and A’s tiny sparkliness! And I really like A’s coiffure—extravagant but not ridiculous :D
I never really thought of how G’s sleeves would work, but … while I initially was mostly “!!!!!!” at A’s gorgeousness, I really love what you did with G’s. Both prim and down-to-earth, which is exactly her.
