A story of twins (almost Siamese) where Jeremy Irons delivers a breathtaking acting performance alongside Geneviève Bujold, who is always so comfortable when she crosses the Atlantic. Once again in Cronenberg's journey, the human being is caught in his raw corporeality, alone palpable reality accessible to “scientific” understanding. Everything else, that is to say emotions, pain, pleasure, feelings are a priori neglected by the cynical double, the one who speaks in public and comes to reap the fruits of the other's work... The problem is thatthe other, the sensitive one (the crazy one ?), does not understand it that way and the beautiful, mechanical one "sharpened since childhood" complementary and perfect twins in a double entity will irremediably seize up when love arises, until the inevitable "final solution". Professor Cronenberg's lesson in humanity had perhaps never been so irritating... or so right...

O CineSESC tem uma sessão chamada 35mm, para exibir filmes nesse formato antigo(!) que a cada dia cai em desuso. Essa semana escolheram essa cópia desse filme de 1988, numa pequena mostra do diretor David Cronenberg que completa 80 anos em 2023. Eu vi em VHS, provavelmente no começo do anos 1990. Esse ano a Amazon lançou uma série com a mesma história, mas não assisti. Bora ver no cinema!

depois de ver: a cópia 35mm estava com problemas, avisaram no começo. era uma que rodava desde 1988 que estava com os últimos rolos prejudicados. metade foi projetada em 35mm outra metade em digital. o filme continua tenso e atual.

Chris: Watched this since I somehow never saw it and now there is a tv series, not a very typical Cronenberg film, not a typical Jeremy Irons film which seemed to launch his strangeness, only recommended for those who are also thinking about embarking on the tv series, not exactly fun or requiring repeating in any form whatsoever, Watch: On Subscription Service.

Richie: I didn’t like, I didn’t get it, it was unnecessary viewing, Avoid.

This is another film that was selected for Movie Club Challenge over on The Podcast Under the Stairs. It was a blindspot for me in David Cronenberg's filmography and I'm glad I knocked this one off. It is an amazing performance from Jeremy Irons and just a great look at depressing look at these two characters descending into madness. What are your thoughts on this movie?
