Holes of my sweater(a haline soulmate au)
Background: Everyone has a soulmate, or multiple soulmates. The first words they say to you appear somewhere on your body, and then the first place they touch you is in colored paint somewhere else on your body. The paint and ink both turn white when you meet them for the first time.
Helen shivered while walking to school, she hadn’t expected New York to get so cold in only October, and she didn’t have an abundance of sweaters or jackets since it rarely got chilly to need one in Los Angeles. Her brother, Mark, and his significant others offered her a ride, but she declined, Helen prefers to walk to school so she can clear her head before the start of the school day. Today was Wednesday, meaning Helen had class with the pretty blackette in homeroom, or calculus. Aline was her crush’s name, they hadn’t ever spoken, nor interacted, ever.
Helen sighed and looked down at the ink on her palm, the phrase, “duck!” Was written in bold. And almost the entire right side of her body was painted with pink splotches. What a weird first interaction with her soulmate. She wondered what Aline’s signs were.
She made it to school without getting frostbite or hypothermia, luckily Mark had gotten some hot chocolate for her when he and his significant others got coffee(or warm milk in Kieran’s case). The football team on the other side of the cafeteria was being loud and obnoxious as per usual, tossing around a football and talking about some party after the big game on Friday.
One of the football players ran from the table and behind Helen, yelling for his teammate to pass the ball. Helen was too busy talking with Cristina, her brother’s girlfriend, to notice the ball coming right at her.
“Duck!” A girl’s voice yelled before she felt herself get knocked to ground the same time the ball went right through where she had been standing at like 50 miles per hour. Helen felt her entire right side tickle and when she looked at her side, the paint had turned white, and so was the ink on her hand. She looked at her soulmate, Aline, she realized, who was in a similar state of shock.
“I guess I literally fell for you huh.” Helen said awkwardly, rubbing her arm.
“I was so hoping those would be the first words you told me.” Aline said, smiling. “I’ve liked you for a while.”
“Really? Me too!” Helen exclaimed. “You’re so smart and confident and I saw the art you did for the showcase, my little brother Jules was there for his middle school and my breath was taken away by your art.”
Aline reached out and took her hand, “you were my muse for those paintings. You remind me of a lily of the valley, beautiful and full of life even in the tough conditions of winter.”
“Lilies of the valley represent happiness, they were my mom’s favorites.”
The bell rang interrupting the sweet moment, they noticed that almost everyone had left before the bell had sounded. “I’ll see you in homeroom.” Aline said before kissing Helen’s hand and heading to her first period class.
Helen was practically vibrating until she got to third period, or homeroom. Her and Aline didn’t sit next to each other because their teacher had assigned seats at the beginning of school. The person behind the blonde tapped her shoulder and handed her a note, ‘meet me in central park after school, by the pond. -your soulmate <3’. Helen almost fainted from excitement.
The rest of the day went by quickly, and when the dismissal bell rang, Helen rushed to the park and sat on a bench nearest to the pond, too excited to notice the air had gotten cooler. “H-hey.” She said when Aline arrived.
“Hey. You want to take a walk?” The asian girl offered her hand to the blonde.
“I’d love to.” She took the other girl’s hand and had to stop herself from skipping down the path. After a while of small talk, Helen asked, “did you know your soulmate would be a girl?”
“I mean I am a lesbian so I was very hopeful.”
“Oh.” Helen said she didn’t have the best experiences with dating lesbians.
“What about you? Did you know your soulmate would be a girl?” Aline asked hesitantly.
“Um, well,” she started, pulling her hands from her soulmate and starting to play with her sleeves, the cold starting to get to her. “I didn’t know. I thought there might’ve been a chance that you’d be a boy instead.”
“OH you’re bi? Or pan? Or unlabeled? Or- actually I’m just going to let you talk.”
“I’m bi. I’m sorry, I promise I’ve never cheated on anyone!” Helen said, waving her hands in front of her.
“Why are you apologizing? And I didn’t take you as the type to cheat.” Aline took notice of her soulmate shivering and took off her sweater, she offered it to the blonde. “Here. You look like you’re about to turn into a popsicle.”
“But this is yours, I can’t take it, what will you wear?!”
Aline laughed and slipped her sweater onto Helen, then stuck hands through the holes so she could take Helen’s hands in her own. “There, problem fixed.” She smiled, squeezing her soulmate’s hands gently.
“You don’t mind that I’m bi?”
“Why would I? You can’t help who you love, and it doesn’t matter to me.”
Helen sniffled, “my ex’s dumped me or accused me of cheating when they found out I’m bi.”
“I want their names.” Aline said seriously, dropping Helen’s hands from her own and cupping the other girl’s face. “They need to understand they can’t just go and judging people like that, especially not someone sweet like you. I know it’s soon but I love you, I have for a long time, and I will never hurt you.”
Helen felt hot tears stream out of her eyes only to be wiped away by Aline. “I can’t say it yet, I need to really mean it.”
“You don’t ever have to say it. I will never make you do something you’re uncomfortable with.”
The blonde grabbed her soulmate and pulled her into for a tight hug, sobbing into her shoulder. “I’m so happy.”
“Me too.” Helen pulled away first, making some apology about being a crybaby and a burden. “Bullshit. Come here, I’ll carry you home.”
“What? We’re practically married now, and I plan to pamper you senseless.” Helen giggled as Aline lifted her off the ground bridal style and kissed all over her face. Today was a good day.
