has tolstoy considered i actually don't want to stay away from the kuragins? that they already intrigue me the most? you start off with everyone (including his own father) saying anatole is the worst and the female members of the family (like helene) should be avoided and you expect me not to want to spend time with them?

again with the contagiousness of fathers. when pierre attacks helène we’re told “his father’s nature showed itself” in him, and now andrei "smiled like his father, coldly, maliciously, and unpleasantly". and before him there was marya, horrified to find herself punishing little nikolai as her father did with her. it’s a streak constantly threatening to emerge and wreck the children’s attempts at developing an alternative view and way of life, a weight pulling them down.
