Musical Retrospective: Hello, I Love You (Hell-O)
youtube
Sung by: Finn Hudson Original Artist(s): The Doors
Hello! It's been six months - and I'm ready to jump back into the retrospective! (I missed doing these - but I moved so that made things difficult for a while.) And... what an appropriate episode to pick up with.
And, the shift in how they incorporate what kind of music changes right off the bat. Sure, there were a few semi-thematic episodes in the Front 13 (like Ballad) but more or less, they picked songs that they felt fit the character, episode, etc more than trying to fulfill a specific theme. Well, from here on out, things are going to flip a little, and the music being thematic is going to be much more of, well, a theme.
The theme this week is, obviously, Hello! It's a reintroduction into the series, and what better way to do that than use music reflects that reintroduction in the simplistic of forms -- a greeting. (I have to guess that Ryan Murphy and Co thought this was brilliant when they thought it up.)
Story Analysis
We're kicking things off with Finn singing The Doors' Hello I Love You, which works for him. Even though he has to be coaxed into it by Will -- Finn likes to imagine himself as the rockstar, but does this song make a whole lot of sense? It does and it doesn't.
The clever thing about this song is that they are able to push along some of Finn's story and define some of his characterization -- but at the same time, I don't think this song fits on a one to one level. It fits the theme of the episode more than being a specific song choice for the character.
Still, they are able to incorporate it in a way that you don't stop to think about it that much because the imagery being paired with the song works.
Hello, I love you Won't you tell me your name
The main refrain from this song is about a guy flirting with a girl he just met. That's it. That's pretty much what the song is about. So -- who exactly is Finn singing to? Well - the song's lyrics are almost irrelevant. Finn's not singing to anyone in particular. It's about attitude (Finn wanting to take on this Rockstar persona) and reinvention (character wise - both Will and Finn are finding themselves in this episode, and this is, more or less, Finn trying to find himself.)
She's walkin' down the street Blind to every eye she meets Do you think you'll be the guy To make the queen of the angels sigh
There is one girl this song is about, and it's not Rachel... it's Quinn. While it's a bit more subtle in the rest of the episode, there's a strain of Finn not quite being over Quinn, and him dealing with who he is if he's not in a relationship with her. (All of this, of course, to parallel what's going on with Will and his life.)
Technical Thoughts
I think I'm going to expand on some of the story elements here, because a lot of this song is telling story through the technical and visual elements more so than what the song itself is saying - which is interesting. The song still /works/ even if the lyrics aren't used in a literal manner.
First of all, it's already been established that Finn is a fan of old school rock, and it's a genre of music that fits his voice pretty well. The song stays relatively in a small range, and I think he sounds pretty good on it.
Secondly, Finn has a whole mini-character arc throughout the two-minute song. He starts out timidly on the stage, but as the song goes on, as he gets more comfortable and confident with the song, by the time he's back in the choir room - he's flirty and relaxed and playing up the rockstar persona. He's letting the song dictate how he holds himself (and that's totally fine!).
I suppose the question is - is this the authentic Finn? Actually, yes. Mostly. I think this is Finn kind of waking up to think better of himself. Sure, any fifteen year old getting attention in the way he is - is bound to have a slight ego about it, but I think Finn's figuring out who he is on his own (as, again I beat a dead horse, what the episode is wanting you to feel in conjunction with Will going through the same thing.)
My point is - Cory's did a great job of playing a fifteen year old going through an identity crisis.
Okay, other things I want to point out...
I like how they used the lyric 'She's walking down the street...' to show Quinn walking down the hallway. And then mentioning that she's 'blind' to him as she walks by without a glance at him.
This little scene I think is so great, because Quinn and Puck don't really get to say or do anything in this episode -- but there are a few character moments here, where they're kind of fighting about their own relationship. And Finn is sizing up Puck in the couple of lines about having what it takes to 'make the queen of the angels sigh'. Cory's acting is so spot on -- the way he looks onto the little drama as if its beneath him is brilliant.
Hello, I love you Let me jump in your game
I'm pretty sure one of the reasons Finn is playing basketball in this episode is for this episode. I love that he's flirting with the cheerleaders - as if they're the ones he's asking their name.
And then, of course, after all the attention he's gotten in the rest of the song, he's full on confidence and bravado as he enters the choir room while screaming 'Hello'. It's the new Finn!
There are some great background beats. Quinn finally glances at him - intrigued by the new attitude (Dianna Agron has a great look on her face during this). Finn goes not to Quinn or Rachel or even Brittany and Santana but to Tina. Because Tina's safe -- he can strut all he wants with her because it doesn't mean anything. Not sure if it's purposeful, but man does it work.
And then there's the lusty look on Kurt's face -- god, I love Chris's background acting, lol.
vs. The Studio Version : So, the main differences are the added verse (and mini instrumental solo) and an extended ending. It sounds also like they added a little more autotune on this recording, and you can hear the background instruments a lot more.
vs. The Original Version : Glee's arrangement is pretty much the same as the original. They cut out a few lyrics (I wonder why, huh) but other than that it's pretty much the same. Of course, the original sounds grittier than the Glee version - I'm not sure why Glee always goes for a softer sound, but it does.
I wish I had some interesting story to go along with this - but I couldn't find anything really interesting that stood out about this one. :P
Anyway, welcome back to the retrospective! Hello again guys! :D

“— John —“
She scrambles a few steps to catch up with him — Like a child in a toy store, tripping over themselves to catch up with a parent who’d just threatened to leave. It was just that she’d never left the country before. She’d barely left Georgia before, really, save a few trips to California. London was an entirely different matter, she’d already nearly lost him in the airport three times while she’d stopped to look at things.
“Can you slow down for two minutes? I don’t even know if my phone works here, what am I supposed to do if I lose you?”

"Almost done; you're doing so good--"
I just can't imagine this in Mac's voice so I guess he needs it said TO him....
Mac has this said to him weekly you can’t change my mind
“Jack, despite what you must think, you are not helping.”
“What do I need to do to help then? Wanna squeeze my hand? Need me to get ya anythin? Want me to serenade ya so yer focusin on me and not the pain?”
“The best thing for you to do at the moment is let us work, Agent.”
Mac snorted out a slight laugh before hissing in pain as the medic prodded his arm. It was his fault, in all honesty; a simple mishap in the lab that lead to beakers being broken and Mac falling onto the shattered glass. Not the most painful thing that’s ever happened but definitely the most annoying at that moment.
“Can’t ya at least give him somethin for the pain?”
“Unfortunately not. I know Agent Macgyver said the glass was all clean, but until we get it all of of his skin and clean the wounds, we don’t want to take the chances of the medication reacting with any potential chemicals.”
“I’m okay Jack.”
Jack didn’t believe him for a second, not when every sound out of his mouth was laced with some sort pain. Jack had first hand experience with glass embedded in his skin, knew how much it hurt and how every movement caused pain, and he’d been given something to numb out the area. Mac’s whole arm had large and small shards in it with nothing but his stubbornness to say he was okay.
But Jack could see through it. He did end up taking Mac’s good hand in his own, offering support and something other than the medbay table to squeeze.
“Almost done Mac. You’re doin so good.”
Mac only nodded slightly and squeezed Jack’s hand.
