As Amory walked into the kitchen in the morning, she stopped in her tracks, noticing sugar, chocolate and flour all over the countertops.
“Whoa, the bomb that wen toff here was a cake?” The short blonde asked, her eyes widened.
“8 hours, 16 ounces of chocolate and 32 cupcakes, and they still don’t taste right. Do you want to try one, maybe you could tell met what’s missing.” The tall blonde offered her friend.
“Sorry, Iz. I’ll have on later, gonna stick with toast and coffie, than you.” She moved to make herself some coffie and put some bread in the toaster.
“These are goor. MArtha Stewart would be pround.” George complimented the baker.
“Yeah, well, look where it got her… There’s something missing, some specific ingrdient.” She scratched her head, as her short friend put some butter on her now toatsed bread. “Why can’t I remember?”
“Look, just call her. Call you mother and ask.” The boy suggested.
“I don’t wanna call my mother.” She answered, seemingly moody. The other two shared a look before shrugging. The small blonde now sat beside him, eating her usual breakfast.
“Good Morning!” Derek came into the kitchen, accompanied by Meredith, adn George offered them a cupcake.
“You know, I like it here. Hey, you said so yourself, you liked having your things around, sleeping in your own bed…” The man pointed out, reaching for the meusli, as the group sat at the table.
“You are like a health nut, aren’t you?” George asked, everyone giving him quizzical looks. “You eat meusli every morning.”
“So what, I also eat the same thing everyday. Let him eat, George.” The young intern complained.
“I don’t” He defended himself.
“Okay, the meusli thing… you do.” The taller blonde pointed out, Amory and George nodding along. “At least, the last seven days.”
“Oh, come one!” The attending approached his girlfirend, meusli and milk in hand. “I haven’t been her for a wholle week… have I?”
“You have.” The short blonde said in a teasing manner.
“See, even they think it’s weird.” Meredith pointed out.
~~~~~~
Cristina, Meredith and Amory now talked to a psychiatrist, trying to find out who a patient belonged to.
“This guy belongs in psych. What are you doing dumping him here?” Cristina complained.
“He’s my gift to you. Had a seizure two days ago, his family thinks he’s dangerous and they had him committed.” The short blonde points our.
“Right, he’s psych, not neuro.” The dirty blonde said, plainly.
“Didn’t you go to med school?” Cristina scoffed.
“Yes, and unlike the correspondence school you three attended…” The psychiatrist insulted
“Oh, that’s to be Stanford, Dartmouth and Yale, right?” The Asian shot back.
“Sorry, ladies. We can’t take him back until he’s cleared.” The man informed.
“So you’re just dumping him on us?” The young intern sassed.
“He thinks his seizures are visions.” He said and left.
“Hello?!” The patient called from his room. “They’re not seizures, i’m psychic.”
“Of course you are, and I’m a chicken.” Cristina retorted, as they entered the room.
“Okay, Mr. Duff, we’re gonna start our work up now.” Meredith smiled at him.
“Work me up, work me down, I’m telling you, it’s a waste of time.” He said right back.
“I need you to grip my fingers, please.” Amory smiled down at him. Just then, the man seemed to zone out. “Hey, Mer, Cristina.” She called out.
The girls looked at the mand and immediatly realised why the girl called them. “Mr. Duff?” The Asian called out.
“Mr. Duff, are you okay?” The short blonde shook his shoulder lightly and he looked right back at her.
“Someone…” He started. “Someone is gonna check out.” At that, Cristina rolled her ayes, the small girl besides her furrowing her brows. “Bye bye.”
“Man, he’s nuts.” The curly-haires woman let out, as the young intern her het lightly.
“I’m dizzy, not deaf, lady. And I’m telling you someone in the fourth floor is gonna die.”
“That’d actually be Dr. Yang, Mr. Duff, not lady.” The young blonde defended her friend with the sickly sweet smile on her face that signalled that she was getting annoyed.
Just then, a voice was heard through the hospital’s speakers. “Code blue, fourth floor. Code blue, fourth floor.” The man raised hus hand as if to say goodbye, in a teasing manner. Meredith and Amory looked at each other with a mix of confusion and shock, Cristina remaining impassive.
~~~~~~
“Botox would do wonders on those frown lines.” The self-proclaimed psychic told Cristina, as she and Amory examined him.
“Okay, shut up.”
“Are allowed to talk to me like that? Is she?” He asked the smaller girl.
“No, but if I pretend I didn’t hear it there is nothing to prove it except your word.” She smiled, slightly annoyed now. Cristina answered him with a hiss.
“God, you’re hot… in a Mrs. Livingstone kind of way.” he smirked, Amory looking at him with a stern look.
“See these spikes on your temporal lobe? It mean you have epilepsy. Not visions, epileptic seizures.” The asain woman pointed out, showing him the paper.
“You think I’m epileptic? That’s so not right.” He answered.
“We don’t think anything, the graphs don’t lie, Mr. Duff.” The younger intern explained. “We’re going to get you an MRI now, to get a closer look at your brain, okay?”
“Yeah, there’s no way…” The patient started, right before entering his trance-like-state once more.
“Mr. Duff? Can you see me? Can you hear me?” The taller woman examined his pupils with a flashlight. “Stay with me.”
“Wouldn’t have picked you for the mommy track, Nurse Betty. Unless, of course, you choose what your friend did.”
Cristina backed away from the patient, shock in her face and Helena’s eyes widened and her soft smile left her face. The smaller girl turned around and left the room, without so much as a goodbye, leaning against the hallway door. She could feel a small anxiety attack rising, feeling vulnerable and expose by the revelation, and she closed her eyes, trying to keep it at bay.
When she saw her friend leave the room, she followed her to the closest on-call room. “Crisitna!” She called, as the woman entered the room.
When she got inside, she saw her sitting on a bunk bed. “What?” She answered, somewhat bluntly.
“I was just checking in on you. Is it… true? You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, but I assure you I won’t tell anyone.” The young intern sat by her, the ever fimilair tightness in her chest rising and losing sensation on her hands. At the sight, her friend’s face softened.
“Thanks, Amory. Was yours true?” She leaned back on the bad.
Amory nodded slightly, tears filling her eyes. “I was nineteen, I thought I would be able to hande it, but it still hurts so much. It’s only been two years…” It was becoming harder to breathe by the second and her hands were now shaking. Cristina looked at her, compassion in her face and her expression soft, as the girl started to breathe more deeply. “I…” The young girl tried to take a deep breath.” I’m sorry, give m-me a minute.”
The young girl moved to another bed, eyes closed and focused on getting her breathing to even out. She held her hands to each other, trying to get feeling back to them. She focused on her sense, tried to rationalize her thoughts and put her head between her legs to keep the dizziness away. Her friend watched, a mixture of compassion and admiration in her eyes. A couple of minutes later, Amory opened her eyes, wiping the tears she’d let fall and sitting back by Crisinia once more, with newfound resolve on her face.
“When I was nineteen, I was r-raped. I got pregnant, and I had a hard time comiing to terms with the decision the end it, but I stand by it. I don’t tell this to anyone, unless it’s needed for a situation, or with my shrink.” She said, her voice now back to it’s usual conviction. “I’m sorry about that…” She waved her hands towards where she’s sat moments earlier, “Just, my anxiety gets worse when I feel to exposed.”
“You don’t have to apology, Amy. Besides, the way you pulled yourself together was pretty amazing.” The older intern said, her shoulder serving as a head rest for her friend.
“I meant to help you out… not the other way around. I just wanted to let you know that I’m here for you, whether you decide to keep it or not. I’m here.” The younger girl told her friend.
“You know, sometimes even the strongest people need to let others care for them, Amy.” Cristina told the girl, looking down at her. “I have an appointment for the sixteenth, I’m aborting.”
“Do you mind if I ask…” The young girl was unsure of how to pose her question. “I’m assuming it’s Burke’s. Does… does he know?”
“I’m not planning on telling him.”
“Okay, then… I won’t say anything either.” The friends say like that in silence for a whil, finding comfort in each other.
~~~~~~
After Cristina got of the case, Amory and Izzie get their patient in the CT machine.
“You’re into me, I can tell.” He tells Izzie, making Amory slightly roll her eyes. “Doctor small-and-angry was a hot appetiser, but you both are a smorgasbord of lust.”
The small doctor is clearly trying her best to ignore the mas, as the older intern warns him. “Mr. Duff, you’re pressing your luck.”
“Would you press it for me?” He asks with a smirk, Amory finally shooting him one of her famous reprimanding glares.
“God, that look is just like the one my mother used to give me.” He shiver slightly.
“Yeah, it’s her specialty.” The tall blonde chuckled.
“I hope you’re not claustrophobic.” Amory said with a sickly sweet smile, as he stared at her friend.
“You’re staring at me, stop.”
“I’m staring at you sweetheart, but it’s the strangest thing, I’m hungry for a chocolate cupcake.” Amory’s eyes widened once again at the affirmation.
“What did you just say?” The tall intern questioned him.
“A chocolate cupcake. Maybe one of those with the white squiggle on the frosting. Could you oblige?”
“What, do I still have some chocolate in my face or in my hear or something? I know the drill, so keep it up. Next, you’ll be reading mu cards, telling me my dead uncle is in the room.” The tall blonde rose her brows and the small girl’s eyes looked around her discreetly.
“Is he?” The man questioned.
“I don’t have a dead uncle.”
“Now, Mr. Duff, time to get in the machine.” The small girl patted it slightly and send him in.
~~~~~~
Cristina and Amory now sat at a desk, the former playing around with her food and the second eating her chicken sandwich while reading through another article she printed earlier in the week.
“If that’s turkey, can I have some?” George arrives, asking for their friend’s untouched food.
“It’s soggy.”
“Maybe it’ll kill you and solve everything.” Alex deadpanned, as he followed George to sit down.
“Hey!” Amory hit his arm. “Why do you always wish death upon others? George’s not dying.”
“I could have gottan that intubation. I’m good at intubations.” The short man complained.
“Why does everything in the hospital smell like a hospital?” Meredith asked them out of the belu, leaving right after, as Izzie joined the group.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, George. Everybody makes mistaked.” The tall blonde recommends.
“Just don’t make the same mistake twice. That way it won’t have been for nothing.” Amory share once again a piece of her advise.
“You know, I’m good at a lot of things.” George squeaks, as his short friend pats his shoulder.
“We know you are, George.” The small blonde reassured him.
“You know what? I’m gonna tell you something. Hey, George, you need to get laid.” Cristina begins. “See that nurse over there? She’s single, she’s got red ahir, go ask her out.”
“Oh, Olivia? She’s cute, you should try it.” The younger intern encouraged, still in denial about her feelings towards the boy.
“In case you forgot, I intubated an esophagus!”
“Dudde, you’re tweaking. Maybe you should go see that psychic…” Alex teased.
“Mr. Duff is not a psychic.” Izzie yelled, annoyed.
“I am trying to help you!” The Asain woman told George. “Go buy her a latte and freshen up your gonads please!”
“If you want I could ask her for you!” Amory smiled at the boy.
As Izzie looked at her phone, she noticed her friend’s looks. “Shut up!”
“It’s not too late to call her, you know. I’m sure you have good reasons not to, but you can still change your mind.” The short blonde advised her friend.
“Yeah, moms like that, surprises on their birthdays. You know, it’s very hallmark.” George encouraged the tall blonde, earning himself a slight smile. At the lach of an answer both the boy and the shorter girl left.
~~~~~~
“Izzie, he’s already said no, why do you keep insisting?” Amory asked her friend, who dragged her to their patient’s room.
“Maybe if you tell him the same thing he’ll listen? I don’t know, okay, but please try?” The taller one pleaded.
The short blonde went silent for a moment thinking through her options. “Okay, fine, I’ll talk to him.”
“Yay, okay, thank you.” The tall blonde gave her a quick hug and they both entered the room.
“Mr. Duff? We’re here with te consent forms again.” The young intern started off.
“You really need to sign them. Your surgeon scheduled the OR.” As they noticed the man looking straight ahead, the girls looked at each other. “Mr. Duff, are you alright? Are you having another seizure?”
They approached him, looking at his monitor. “Yeah, I think maybe I am.” He answered.
“What is it?” The smaller girl aksed, resistant to hear the answer.
“It’s me…” Tears filled the man’s eyes. “I think it’s about to be over.”
“Mr. Duff, you saw the angio result. We’re doing the AVM just in time. No need to worry, we know what we’re doing.” The short girl tranquilizes their patient, kindness in her voice.
“You don’t need to be nervous, you’re not going to die. Promise.” Izzie assured him, Amory shooting her a glare. She knew that the girl shouldn’t be promising life, even if the odds were favourable.
“I’m not talking about dying.” He went silent for a moment. “My whole life has been about what I see, about believing in myself, whatever people think. You’re telling me there’s a very good chance that will go away.”
“Look, you’re a healthy guy. You’re gonna live a long, full life.” The tall blonde said.
“And, think of it like this, if your visions truly are real, then you have to believe you’ll still have them after the surgery. If you don’t, then you’ll have the rest of your life ahead of you, to discover this new version of yourself.” Amory looked at him, trying to give the best advice she could.
Izzie gave the patient the paperwork and he signed it. The man looked away, clearly scared for his future but, as the surgeons left the room he called out for Amory. “Dr. Madden?”
“Yes?” The small girl turned around, her friend already left the room.
“I know you try to ignore it, so I’m giving you a push; you like him, don’t let him slip away.” The blonde blushed, knowing exactly who he meant.
~~~~~~
As the interns sat in the tunnels, Amory laid in a bed, her legs over Meredith’s, while she finished her article she started earlier that day.
“I tirend to talk Shepherd out of that clot surgery. what is wrong with me?” Meredith let out.
“Basically, you tried to kill the guy.” Alex teased.
“Basically, you’re an ass.” Cristina shot back, Amory letting out a little laugh at the altercation.
“You know you want it…” Alex joked, before being cut off.
“Mer, you couldn’t have known. It’s another thing that makes us interns and Shepherd is an attending. We don’t have the experience to know better.” The small girl reassured their friend.
George then came in, pointing to his ID picture. “This is George. George has… a hot date.”
Amory’s head shot up in denial. Thinking she’ll now never get the chance.
“Who? Olivia?” The boy nodded at his closest friend’s question. “Yes, I told you she was nice.” The girl squealed, excited, covering the sadness taking over he features.
“Aw, that’s great, George.” Meredith told him.
“Left pocket of my lab coat. No glove, no love.” Alex stood up and George reached for his pocket, Amory watching with slight discomfort.
“I mean, sure, if Alex has to be a manwhore at least he does it with protection.” Amory giggled and the boy in question faked an offended look.
George sat in a wheelchair next to the group as Alex left an Izzie sighed. “Our psychic had his surgery.” The girl informed.
“Yeah?”
“I wonder what happened with his… gift.” The tall blonde finished.
“Come one, we all know he’s crazy.” Cristina commented, Amory looking at her knowingly.
“I thought you said you didn’t believe in that stuff.” Meredith told the tall model.
“I grew up in a trailer park, I waited tables, which was supposed to put me through college, but my mother was always calling these… psychics. All the time. And the bills started piling up so I had to use my money to pay them. when I turned eighteen I left, never went back.” The woman explained. “This guy has been saying things to me, things he couldn’t possibly know anything about, so I just… wonder.”
“Well, I don’t know if I believe that stuff, but he did say some things that he shouldn’t have known…” Amory revealed. The group fell in silence, changing the topic shortly after.
~~~~~~
As Amory lay on her bed, at the end of the long day, she shuffled through her article, but couldn’t bring herself to pay any attention to it. It has been a hard day, filled with anxiety and past events coming up.  So she decided to do the one thing that could always get her mind off something like this. She put on some of her favorite music and danced it out. Unknown about the boy that was standing outside her room.
Where We Might End Up - Lexie Grey x OC fanfic    Chapter 8: Like a Plague
S6/E4 ___________________________________________________
After two weeks, Richard had laid off some personnel and residents as a result of the merger between Seattle Grace and Mercy West. Derek had been stressing himself about the merger and about Richard. Meanwhile, Eric had been stressed out about the residents who had been in his service. He's stressed because his usual resident had been avoiding him.
It started after George's funeral - The same time when he decided to be nice to that same resident. Eric didn't know where he's more annoyed. The fact that his work is being affected because of the incompetent residents replacing her or that he didn't get to boast about it to Callie since she wouldn't even notice he's being nice because Eric and Lexie Grey wasn't interacting anymore. And even if he wanted to annoy Lexie now, he couldn't. The girl had been avoiding him like a plague and it's getting on his nerves.
Eric reached for the coffee as he paid at the cart. Meredith and Cristina arrived and queued behind him.
"Hey," Meredith greeted him.
Eric turned he pocketed his wallet, "Hey."
Cristina went through and ordered at the coffee cart, "Two please."
Meredith smiled at Eric as he sipped his coffee, "What's wrong with your sister?" He asked, furrowing his eyebrows as he swilled the hot coffee.
"Lexie? Nothing, why?" Meredith stated. Eric scoffed as he took another swig, staring at his cup.
Lexie turned out of the hall and into the lobby. She made her way towards the coffee cart and called Meredith, "Meredith!"
Meredith and Cristina looked at Lexie. Eric peeked back, seeing Lexie. Lexie quickly stopped, almost skidding on the polished floor. She staggered back towards the hall, nervously.
"Well," Cristina paused, "You, I guess?" Eric glared at her.
"She's avoiding you?" Meredith asked.
Eric stared at Meredith, eyebrows curved, "Tell me you're not that clueless?" He groaned, "I need a resident..."
"to torture?" Meredith completed his statement, amused.
"I need..." He implied, looking at Meredith, "a resident - not to torture, Grey. And Lexie, she knows how I move. She's - " trying not to over-complement the toddler, "- adequate."
" - the better grey," Cristina chuckled, murmuring aloud, recalling Eric's comment, "that's really epic," Eric glared at her. Cristina stared back, "You need a resident?" She gestured on herself, "hello? badass over here."
Eric shifted closer to Cristina - standing straight, chin up, both hands at his back, practically inspecting Cristina from head to toe. Cristina mimicked him, stiffly, glancing at Meredith.
"Chill, GI Joe," Cristina blurted out.
"Okay," He stated.
"Okay?" Cristina cackled and jumped, "Okay. Ha!" Eric nodded and walked away. Cristina followed.
- - - - -
Eric saying yes to Cristina working with him was the worst decision he made. A direct and sarcastic attending and overbearing and retorting resident shouldn't be in a same room. Sure, Her talents and surgical skills are impeccable, but he felt drained after a day of having Cristina at his service.
"No offense, but I don't get how a surgeon could focus on one organ," Cristina chuckled, holding the retractor, "I mean..." She huffed.
"Instead of being mediocre in several organs, why be a master of one," Eric smoothly responded.
"Said the trauma surgeon," Cristina retorted. Eric scowled at her. Cristina cleared her throat.
"I am, primarily a Neurosurgeon," Eric implied, "And... the brain is a complex organ. It's challenging to study its intricacies -,"
"Yeah, complex. Not as badass as the heart, though," Cristina interrupted. Eric glanced at her and stared back at the open cranium in front of them, "Oh, I miss the blood..."
"It's not just about the cut, Dr. Yang."
"Yeah, tell that to yourself again," She paused, "We all crave that thrill of the cut, Dr. Keaton," She glanced at him as she continued, "no offense."
"Have you had this conversation with Derek Shepherd?" Eric chuckled.
"Yes." She responded simply.
"What did he say?"
"The same way you did," Cristina responded, "Nothing."
Evening Attending's Lounge
Eric slammed at the couch, arm dangling down, closing his eyes.
"You met your match?" Arizona spoke as she chuckled.
"God, that bloody woman's exhausting."
Arizona pondered as she fixed her things inside her bag, "Yep. She is," She turned towards Eric, "But, she's brilliant, right?"
Eric crushed his face on the couch and muffled his reply, "yshhh" He sat up and continued, "I want my resident back."
Arizona's eyebrows furrowed, "my? who..." Her eyes widened as she realized, "Wait... You're..." She snickered, "Lexie!? Oh my go-"
Eric scowled at her. He sat as he continued, "The toddler... doesn't talk back. And she knows how to handle my post-ops, accurately."
Arizona smirked and sat beside him, leaning closer, "Just admit it - you miss her," Arizona chanted, "And you're kinder to her, now," Arizona went on, jabbing him with her index finger at his hip.
"Don't! - I'm not," Eric rose up and snagged his coat from the armchair.
"Where are you going?" Arizona yelled.
Hospital Lobby
Lexie is stepping towards the exit, searching for her keys inside her handbag, when she bumped into someone. She dropped her keys at the floor as she apologized to the person. She glanced down, and was about to get the keys when the person kneeled down to pick up her keys and stood back, handing over the keys to her.
Lexie was fidgeting with a pained gaze. Her shoulders were tensed. "Thank you," Lexie looked up. Her eyes widened. It was the person she had been avoiding. Eric stared at her, eyes narrowed, brows pulled down. Lexie became more conscious, fixing her loosed hair as she continued, "I I'm sorry Dr. Keaton."
Eric noticed that she was acting odd. She's somewhat edgy and worried, "Dr. Grey," He spoke, gently, "Are you -" He paused and instead gave her the keys.
Lexie smiled and looked at the keys as she held it. From what it looked like, she was almost about to cry but she's trying not to, "I-uh -thank you." She practically murmured, her voice almost breaking. She gulped hard, pushing her tears back.
"I-" He shook his head, "our brainstem glioma was scheduled tomorrow. You can scrub in with me," He added.
Lexie nodded and smiled as she walked past him, clutching at the car keys, and made her way outside. Eric followed her as she wearily walked inside her car. Eric can't help but feel there's something wrong with her. Concern grew as she drove away. Eric reluctantly went back in.
The Next Day Catwalk
Richard had called for a meeting with the attendings at Seattle Grace - the only time he went out and talk to his staff. Today is also the day when the attendings at Mercy West were scheduled for an interview with him.
After the meeting, Derek and Mark were the first to go out of the office.
"Is this what the end of the world looks like?" Mark stated, striding at the catwalk as he observed the residents dashing through below the catwalk, "with Webber enjoying danish at the front-row seat."
Derek replied with a groan. Mark stared at him as they walked at the catwalk. Derek kept his head lowered, slouching his shoulder.
Eric went out of the chief's office and went after Mark and Derek. He stepped towards them as he checked his phone.
"Do I need to ask Catherine for a job back in Boston?" Eric smirked as Derek glared at him, "What?" He chortled.
"You two need to shut up, today," Derek walked away, leaving Mark and Eric at the middle of the catwalk, "Not helping."
"Not in the mood, huh?" Eric implied as both he and Mark watched Derek lumbered away at the catwalk.
"Yep," Mark responded, "brainstem glioma today?" He added.
Eric nodded, "Well I'm going down at the pit," He said as he checked his phone, "Owen's asking for a consult."
Emergency room
Eric had finished his consult and cleared Owen's patient. He moved out of the room and pulled out his gloves.
"OK, hey! Pause! Way too many people here," Miranda shouted at the residents surrounding the blood-vomiting patient. Eric turned towards them as he heard Miranda's voice. He stepped further and saw Meredith and Lexie arguing.
Eric pulled Steve as he walked by, "What's going on?" He asked.
"That's Thatcher Grey - Meredith's and Lexie's father," Steve answered. Eric let him go. He hesitated to leave and looked at Eric, hoping that Eric didn't stop him just to ask that information - Maybe he really just stopped him just for that information. Steve walked away and left Eric, who's still staring at Lexie Grey.
As Meredith walked away Eric noticed Lexie pacing back and forth beside the close-curtained bed. Lexie continued glancing through the curtain and staring back at the floor as she trotted. Her shoulders were strained. Her eyebrows are knitted together. She kept biting her nails. - She's obviously worried about her father.
Eric moved closer - to ask her if she's okay or ask if she needed anything. But then he stopped, watching Lexie who had just stopped pacing as Miranda called her. He swung back and stepped away.
Surgical Wing
Even though Eric and Meredith considered each other as friends, knowing Meredith she would only confide on either Derek or Cristina so Eric went to do his scheduled surgeries. After his first surgeries, Eric stayed at the nurses' station right next to the surgical schedule board, going through his next surgeries. He put his hands on his hips as he scanned the board.
"I can be hardcore," Cristina blurted in a sultry manner.
Eric raised an eyebrow. He craned his neck to find out who said that - He saw Cristina Yang, flirting her way towards Jim Nelson. He observed as Jim strolled away when he realized that Owen was there.
"Are you whoring yourself out for surgeries?" Owen said, chuckling.
"Oh, shut up! You forced me to do it," Cristina blurted out. Owen laughed as he walked away. Eric stifled a laugh, which Cristina heard. Cristina turned to him. She widened his eyes. Eric could almost hear her brain working on an idea. Cristina stared at him as Eric looked back at the board.
"You had your chance, Yang," He implied, "So, no."
Her brows furrowed, "Oh, come on!" Cristina blurted, stomping her feet like a kid.
Meredith walked towards Cristina.
"Hey, Mer," Eric greeted Meredith, placing his hands behind his back.
"Hey," She glanced at him.
"Need anything?" He added.
She sighed as she looked at him, "Lexie - she's having a bad day. So, If you're planning to bully her, today. Don't. - That's what I need from you," She finished, as she turned back at Cristina.
Cristina grinned as Eric walked away from the twisted sisters. His pager beeped, sending him towards the ICU.
ICU Floor
Eric walked along the halls of the ICU Floor, trying to concentrate on his work than to think about the resident he'd been bullied. If only he knew he'd be this invested he would stop picking on Lexie Grey at the earliest. Eric remembered this started when He and George have that talk. - that conversation. He narrowed his eyes as he went on towards his patient's room. If George were alive, he would strangle him to death.
"Damn it, George," He said under his breath.
He turned left and continued his way at the hall. Eric stopped as he saw Miranda, Richard and Lexie at the end of the hall. Eric squeezed his eyes shut, pinching the bridge of his nose. - The world is playing with him right now. He glanced back at the group. Meredith stepped closer as they talked about something - about their father's transplant, he thought. And by Lexie's expression - who's glancing at Meredith like Bambi - she's not a match. Eric shook his head, resigning away from the Grey sisters, and moved inside the patient's room.
He stood tough, earning a stare from Steve as he checked the charts of the patient. Eric glanced at Steve and noticed a smile - combined with a sordid idea - forming on the resident. Eric knew what to do to stop his thoughts, "Tell me, Dr. Mostow," He put down the chart, "have you scrubbed in on a brainstem glioma?"
Steve stammered and grinned broadly. The neurosurgeon, not only blurted his name right, but he also asked him to scrub in with him. Eric looked at Steve, "I take that as a no. Let's go. You can scrub in," He added as they went out of the room.
Miranda and Richard had already left when Lexie saw Eric went out of a room close to Thatcher's. She observed him as Eric walked through the hall followed by Steve.
Evening Waiting Area
It was already evening when he and Steve finished their surgery. Steve went out first to inform their patient's family. Eric followed after he closed.
Eric arrived at the waiting area. The family was nowhere to be found. There was only one person there - Lexie. Mark walked by, and stopped beside Eric. Both were staring at Lexie. Both were feeling the same concern towards the younger Grey. - Anyone would, Eric would reason. She's alone. Who would be alone at a time like this?
"Richard found a donor?" Eric asked, crossing his arms.
"Meredith..." Mark answered. Eric looked at Mark, "She volunteered. Derek told me."
Eric looked back at Lexie, "How... unselfish of her," He paused. Mark was about to walk away when Eric stopped him, "You need to sit with her," Gesturing at Lexie. Mark looked at Lexie, "I would but - If I was her, I wouldn't want to see me," He chuckled, as if him being the bad guy is a joke, "She needs someone who genuinely cares for her."
Mark nodded and made his way towards Lexie - now, bending down, squeezing her head below her knees. She stood up as Mark walked closer. Mark hugged her as she broke down.
As the elevators ringed open, Arizona walked out and noticed Eric going in. She pulled Eric, stopping him from riding the elevator, "Hey, I thought you had a day off. Haven't seen you all day."
"I..uhh... surgeries," Eric said, as he stared at the closing elevator. He sighed as he turned to Arizona. Arizona peered at him intently as Eric stared at the floor, impatiently tapping his foot. He's unusually inarticulate - she thought. Eric looked at her as she remained silent.
"Are you going home?" She asked, "Callie and I are going out for dinner - want to join?"
"No, I - Go. I'm staying... patients," Eric said as he pushed the up button.
"Okay," Arizona uttered, "text me - if you change your mind," She added as she walked away.
PACU
It was 9 PM when they brought his patient at the PACU after surgery. 10 PM when Eric went up at the PACU, he saw Derek watching Meredith's room. Before he could check with Derek, his patient coded. Eric and his resident never left the room since then.
It was 2 AM. Steve volunteered to stay beside the patient as Eric went out of the patient's room. The patient has been stable for a while, and hopefully would remain that way. As Eric walked through the halls, he crossed by Meredith's and two rooms away from her room, Thatcher's. There he saw Lexie.
Eric stood where Lexie wouldn't notice him. Her anxiety was evident. But compared to what she looked like earlier, she's calmer now. He could sense relief between her furrowed eyebrows and creased forehead. Lexie sat at the recliner, constantly glancing at her watch and back at Thatcher, tapping her fingers at the armrest. Eric evaded her all day. He assumed it would not be a good idea to add further stress to her by showing his face - the face of the bully who's been giving her hell.
As he observed, Eric hadn't noticed his face copying her expression. Lexie rose up from her seat. Eric shook himself from his stupor and stepped away before being spotted.
- - - - -
Eric thought of bringing her coffee. Also, thinking about the fact that Lexie might not accept it from someone who's 'not a friend', he tried to figure out how to give it to her. As he pondered deeply in front of the cart, hands on his hips, tapping his feet and looking on the floor, an idea sprung up. He bought two cups of coffee - so when she would ask why he's bringing her coffee, he would explain he's giving the other one to Steve, the resident who's been working with him all day. He went back several minutes later carrying two cups of coffee, practicing an explanation for the cup of coffee.
His eyebrows furrowed. Eric wished that he would just walk in there with Lexie sleeping, making it easier for him to just leave the coffee there.
Eric noticed himself tiptoeing at the halls of PACU wing. He stopped. Eric exhaled deeply, staring at the coffee he's holding. - Maybe he's overthinking this. Eric proceeded walking normally. Laughing quietly at himself as he proceeded.
"bloody ridiculous," He muttered under his breath.
He had been all over the hospital. And, she had been all over the hospital. Eric had been using his energy avoiding someone and failing. He's too tired. And right now, He pondered, he didn't care anymore if Lexie's awake. He'll just give the coffee to her - no reasons, no whatsoever.
When he arrived, Lexie's not there. So he checked inside Meredith's room. There she was, dozing at the couch. Eric left the other coffee at the nurses' station before he carefully opened the door and walked inside.
Eric glanced at Lexie as he walked inside. He noticed her brows still creased, but a bit relaxed now. Eric walked further by the desk to lay the coffee cup. He halted, darting his eyes at her as Lexie moved, shifting her position at the couch. She pressed her arms hard against each other, bending her knees together. - She was cold. Eric moved again as Lexie settled. He quietly put the coffee at the table near Lexie and turned. He stepped towards the folded blanket at the end table, grabbed it and moved towards Lexie. Eric put the blanket on her, adjusting it properly. He smiled unknowingly as Lexie snuggled the blanket.
Eric slowly made his way towards the door, carefully sliding it open as he made out. He glanced back inside, checking if he had woken up the two sisters. Eric closed the door and walked towards his patient's room.
Meredith opened her eyes. She pretended to be asleep when she spotted Eric stepping inside the room, holding a cup of coffee. She was about to ask him why he's in her room, but decided not to, trying not to make him embarrassed. Meredith just observed him until he left.
CHAPTER 2
“Mom, we're not staying at the hotel, are we? I do not like them!" although they had woken up at a very unusual time that morning, Vanessa had not slept for the whole flight and now that they were about to land, it seemed that not even the jet-lag had calmed her "No Nessa. We will stay at Aunt Mer's house. So you can play with Zola, Bailey and Ellis as much as you like. "" Are they coming to the hospital kindergarten too? " “Zola no more. She is grown up now and she has to go to school. Now stand still and I fasten your seat belt ".
Within minutes, mother and daughter were running into Meredith who was waiting for them with someone else beside her. The little girl immediately let go of Cristina's hand and ran to meet the two people “Aunt Mer! Aunt Lexie! " she hugged both of them tightly smiling "Honey we missed you!" the cardiothoracic surgeon made her appearance at that moment "Apparently you stole my daughter" she joked, as she hugged her person and her best interne, who was now a close friend almost on the level of her sister "Don't get me wrong but that's enough for me my children. Then she is literally a mini version of you embodied in a female version of Owen! " "I would gladly steal she but I think Mark is enough Sofia and the baby on the way" continued the game Lexie, putting a hand on her baby bump of six months of pregnancy "Mom who is Owen?" Vanessa had been silent listening to them until, she had not realized that she did not know the man who had mentioned Aunt Meredith. Cristina blanched but she still tried not to be noticed by her daughter, and Lexie opted to change the subject “What do you think darling if we all go home now? You will be tired. You rest for a while and afterwards, when Zola, Bailey, Ellis and Sofia get back from school, you play everything together, will you? " the little girl smiled in agreement, momentarily forgetting the initial topic of the conversation.
After returning to the Shepherd-Grey's dream house, the two Yangs settled in the room that had always been destined for the Asian and slept for several hours. Jet lag was devastating for anyone!
They woke up just before dinner because four hurricane children had thrown themselves onto their bed as soon as Meredith told them they had arrived “AUNT CRISTINA! VANESSA! HOW BEAUTIFUL TO SEE YOU! " both laughed as they were embraced with all the strength they possessed. "We too missed you little beasts" said Cristina "Ness, we have to tell you so many things! Come to the hospital tomorrow, right aunt? We need to introduce you to lots of new people! " when she spoke with this enthusiasm, Sofia resembled Arizona much more than she aesthetically resembled Callie. “I think so… indeed certainly. I promise I'll bring she to you soon after, however, first let's go and see Alex and Jo "while they were talking, the whole little company ended up in the living room where the hosts, Lexie, Mark, Callie and Arizona were sitting on the sofa" CRISTINA! O MY GOD WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE ?! " the orthopedist did not immediately notice the little girl that her friend had in her arms until she had almost hugged her "Awww! And who is this beautiful teddy bear? " Arizona said, approaching and stroking her redhead hair. “This is Vanessa, my daughter. Say hello honey ”“ Hello. Are you mum's friends? " the two brides looked at the curly hair with disbelief “Moms, she is Zola's cousin I told you about. Can we give you a tour of the hospital tomorrow? " "Of course sweetie. There are no problems for us. Go ask Dad and Aunt Meredith now. ”The whole time they hadn't stopped looking at the - apparently - mother of that little girl who looked so much like Owen Hunt. Cristina felt very uncomfortable unfortunately, she knew that sooner or later she would have to talk about it so, with a look she made it clear to the two to wait until after dinner.
But apparently "after dinner" she wasn't just going to talk to Callie and Arizona because Miss Alexandra Caroline Gray had decided that throwing a little party with people from the hospital for Cristina Yang's return would be a great idea! Fortunately, some had not been able to come because they had emergencies. Present were Bailey with Ben and Tuck, Jackson and Harriet, Maggie Pierce - Meredith's other sister -, Teddy Altman and a very pregnant Amelia Shepherd!
A strange sensation formed in the pit of the Asian's stomach when she saw her, thinking that Owen hadn't taken so long to replace her with someone else who wanted to give him children without thinking twice "It's not his. As I predicted they didn't last. ”Altman had stopped behind her and now she was also reading her thoughts“ Teddy! Oh my God, look at you! Is this a time of year when everyone is pregnant? " “It may be but, the next is Amelia. She could give birth at any moment and, if it happened tonight, I would not want to be in the father of the child who, as I told you, is not Owen "" Oh, you weren't kidding? Weren't they married? As far as I know, they were "" You said well, they were. A lot of things happened and they got divorced. About a year ago a new God of orthopedics arrived - actually two but the other is not important now - and… well now Amelia is with him who, of course, is the father of the child "the owner of the KlausMann Institute felt. immediately as one of those burdens she carried on her shoulders, he took off, reassuring her at least on one aspect of her life.
In the end, the dinner was not as bad as she had expected, quite the opposite! She had talked a lot with Teddy who, had also introduced her to Maggie Pierce. Apparently the girl is a genius since she graduated in medicine at 18! Apparently her intelligence belongs to the family.
She then had joked with Jackson and April - arrived just before the start of dinner - and had discovered the little girl with whom the man had arrived belonged to both of them. Not that she was surprised, those two were absolutely made for each other.
But the important part of the evening came at that moment: after Shepherd and Pierce had left, all the others had made themselves comfortable waiting for Cristina to clarify some things while, all the children were playing in the other room " You are doctors! You all know how to create a child! " began the Asian, trying a little to dampen the tension "This is not the point Yang! How could you hide such a thing from him ?! " Miranda Bailey and her scolding “I never wanted to do that! When I realized that I could have been pregnant I was shocked but I immediately took the test. It came out negative and, before you ask, I also did the blood test. That too was negative. So when I realized I was actually pregnant, I was in my fifth month. When Vanessa was born the first thing I thought was that I had to tell Owen but then, they told me he was married and I ... I was afraid of ruining his life "Meredith, next to the cardiothoracic surgeon, shook her hand, in 'exact moment when all the children entered screaming in the living room "Are you bad, Mom?" her little girl is too bright “No darling. Did you have to tell me something? " "Did you know that Harriet also comes to the daycare?" "Yes, I know. Her parents work in that hospital. They’re that woman with red hair and the black man with green eyes. But you have to promise me not to run away from daycare, okay? " “Okay mom. I promise you ”“ Good darling ”and the two Yang embraced.
Tonight, when the whole Shepherd-Gray house was in complete silence, Cristina thought only that tomorrow would be the hardest day she had ever experienced.
So This is Love - Merhayes/ Merlex
About 2 weeks ago, @herrera-n-hayes gave me a prompt in which Merhayes went to visit Alex in Kansas, and there, Alex tells Meredith that she’s smitten and in love with Hayes. The one shot is about 2900 words long because I am someone who has a very hard time sparring details, even the smallest most insignificant ones. Anyways, enjoy some pure fluffy Merhayes and Merlex friendship because I’ve been posting a lot of angst lately and we all deserve some feel-good content every once and awhile. I’m going to insert a ‘keep reading’ line just cause of how long it is. Anyways, enjoy!
It’d been a very long time since Meredith Grey last saw Alex Karev. She’d talked to him on the phone multiple times since he’d left, but most of their time talking consisted of her ratting him out for leaving her, Jo, her kids, Bailey and Richard, and up until she became friends with Cormac Hayes, his department. So, when Meredith Grey received a text in the middle of summer from her best friend saying, “Izzie’s out of town next weekend, would you want to come visit me and the kids? You could bring your kids.” She knew she had no reason to say no. Part of her wanted to, so bad. But she was admittedly missing her person – she had just made some major life changes and she wanted so badly to tell Alex and get his approval. So, she said yes, and went to find the one person she knew she wanted to bring along.
 “Hey,” Meredith said softly, coming up behind her boyfriend and placing her hand on his back. He turned to look at her and smiled. “Hey. How’s it going?” He asked her as she grabbed his hand. “How would you feel about taking a trip next weekend to Kansas? With the kids and I, to visit Alex?” He looked at her, surprised. “Really? Are you sure you want me to go with you? You haven’t seen Karev in a while, are you sure you don’t want to catch up alone?” Meredith appreciated that he wanted to let her have time alone with Alex, but she knew that Alex was opinionated and wasn’t afraid to tell her when she was making a mistake – and she wanted him to confirm that she was doing the right thing. She knew in her heart that this was who she was meant to be with and that nothing he said would change how she felt, but his approval would be nice.
“Yeah – I’m sure I want you there. It’s important to me. We can give the boys the option of whether or not they want to stay home or come with us.” Austin and Liam Hayes were now 16 and 18 respectively, and while they were very quickly bonding with Meredith’s trio, she didn’t know if they’d really want to hang out with a 9-year-old, a 7-year-old, 2 6-year-old’s and a 5-year-old while their parents were all hanging out. “Okay.” He finally said after a minute of contemplating the offer. Meredith’s face lit up. “Really?!” She smiled brightly. “Yeah, really. We can talk to the kids tonight after work.” Meredith squealed ever so slightly as she hugged Cormac. “You’re the best.” She said confidently, kissing him quickly afterwards. “I’m gonna go talk to Bailey, make sure we’ll have next weekend off.” Cormac’s pager went off. “I was going to offer to go with you, but it never ends. We can talk more later.” They gave each other one last quick kiss and went their separate ways.
--
 Later that night, after finishing their shifts and getting approval from Bailey to get time off for the following weekend, Meredith and Cormac headed back to Meredith’s new house. She’d decided to sell her old house to Amelia and Link, who’d recently gotten married and were expecting their second child in a few months. It had felt a lot like deja-vu from when she sold Alex the house to move into the dream-house with Derek and Zola, while she was expecting Bailey. Meredith’s only request when picking out her new place was that it had to be close to Amelia and Link – she didn’t want to have to drive very far in the middle of the night if they were having troubles with Scout and eventually their daughter.
The Grey-Shepherd children quickly ran up to their mother when she got inside. “Hey guys!” She said, kneeling down to hug them. Little Ellis gave Cormac a quick hug too. She’d quickly taken a liking to Cormac, and she took after her mom in how she always called him ‘Hayes’. Cormac had made it very clear to the kids when he and Meredith began dating that he could not and would never replace their dad, and he’d never overstepped with their trust. Meredith did the same with Austin and Liam, but it took them a bit longer to warm up to her since they were, well, teenage boys, and they were old enough to remember losing their mom. Eventually they got there though, and Meredith and Cormac were ecstatic when they did.
Cormac headed downstairs to say hello to his sons, get them away from their video games long enough to talk to them about the trip, and then get them back home. It was convenient for Meredith that her boyfriend’s children were old enough to watch her three. It gave the boys opportunities to bond with the kids and gave Meredith some peace of mind that her babies were in relatively good hands. Meredith entered her living room and gathered her kids around her. “So, guys, I got a text from Uncle Alex this morning.” The children’s eyes lit up – Zola’s especially. “And he invited us all over to his house to meet your cousins and hang out with him for the weekend.” That sentence was followed by jumping and squealing from all 3 of the children. “So, how does a plane ride sound next week?” More squealing and excitement followed. Meredith knew that this news would have her kids bouncing off the walls and pestering her about whether It was time to go yet or not, for the next week.
Meredith was spot on in her guess about the kids pestering her every day until the night before they left. The night before leaving was hectic – Cormac, Austin, and Liam were staying at Meredith’s overnight, which meant packing for 5 kids and 2 adults all in the same house. The couple was grateful to have Amelia so close to help Ellis pick out what things she wanted to take, while Meredith packed for herself and Zola, and Cormac helped Bailey in his decisions between superhero shirts. Austin and Liam were just trying to figure out how many portable games they could feasibly bring along without getting in trouble. Early Friday morning, the gang packed their suitcases in the back of Meredith’s car and made their way to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Maggie and Amelia followed along in Amelia’s car, so that Maggie could drive the car back to the house after they made it into the airport and onto the plane.
5 hours later, the plane had safely landed, the car was rented, and everyone was on their way to their hotel. Austin and Liam had successfully convinced their dad to let them stay in a separate room from the one where he and Meredith and her kids would be sleeping. About an hour after arriving at the hotel, everyone was sufficiently unpacked. Zola, Bailey, and Ellis were antsy to go visit Alex. Austin and Liam decided to stay back, so Cormac and Meredith loaded the Grey-Shepherd children into their rental car and headed for Alex’s place.
--
Ellis, Bailey, and Zola were giggly as Meredith pulled into the driveway of Alex’s farmhouse. Cormac only found himself feeling increasingly nervous. He’d already met all of the people Meredith considered family at the hospital, except for Alex. He didn’t even know if Meredith had told Alex that he was joining them. He knew that Alex was, aside from Cristina, Meredith’s best friend and that making a good first impression was key, far different from the first impression he’d made on Meredith. She parked the car and the two adults got out to let the kids out of their car seats. The kids immediately ran to the door and started pounding on it. Alex opened the door and the kids jumped on him almost immediately. Meredith laughed as she watched while she grabbed her purse and walked around the car to grab Cormac’s hand before heading into the house. “Hey guys!” Alex hugged the kids who were more than excited to see him. Meredith smiled at her friend. Alexis and Eli came by and the kids immediately hit it off. As Meredith and Cormac approached the door, Alex’s twins were showing off their toys to Mer’s kids. Meredith let go of her boyfriend’s hand to hug Alex. “I’ve missed you so much.” She said as she stepped back from Alex. “Me too, Mer. I’m glad you were able to come visit. Now are you going to introduce me to your boyfriend?” Meredith laughed. Alex knew that Meredith was in a relationship and that he would be coming, she just refrained from telling any details to him other than that. “Alex, meet Cormac Hayes. Hayes, this is Alex.” Cormac extended his hand and Alex shook it. “It’s nice to meet you, Grey and Yang have told me a lot about you.” Alex looked confused. “Wait, you know Yang?” “Yeah, I worked at her hospital in Switzerland for 2 years after my wife died. She talked a lot about some guy she called ‘Evil Spawn’. When Grey and I first became friends, she explained it a bit further.” Alex laughed and the adults moved inside the house further and sat down on the couch, with plenty of conversation to go around.
After hours of talking and being intermittently interrupted by the young children showing them various toys around the house, the sun began to set. Cormac liked Alex, the two pediatric surgeons found they had a lot in common, and it was easy to keep conversation flowing between the three of them. However, he knew that it was wind-down time for all of the children, and he wanted Meredith and Alex to have some time alone to catch up. Meredith was just about to check the time on her phone, but Cormac pushed her hand down. “It’s getting late, I know the kids have to wind down and go to bed soon. You stay here and spend as much time as you want with Alex, I’ll take the kids back to the hotel and take care of them for the night.” Meredith looked up and half-smiled at her boyfriend. “Are you sure?” She laced their fingers together. “Yeah, you two have fun.” The two smiled at each other, and Hayes kissed Meredith’s cheek. “Alex, it was nice meeting you.” “You too.” Alex responded enthusiastically. The men shook hands and Cormac rounded up the kids, getting them ready to head back to the hotel.
Meredith helped put Eli and Alexis to bed after she said goodnight to her kids and boyfriend, then she and Alex made their way to his kitchen. “Please tell me you have tequila.” Meredith said with a laugh. Alex smiled at his friend and pulled a bottle of tequila from his liquor cabinet for Meredith, and a bottle of whiskey for himself. “You and Hayes really have a lot in common, he loves whiskey.” Alex smirked at his best friend. “Your boyfriend has been gone for maybe 10 minutes and you’re already talking about him again.” Meredith smiled at Alex’s acknowledgement. “What can I say? He’s pretty great.” She exclaimed with a massive smile as she took a drink from the tequila bottle. “So?” Meredith continued. “What did you think of him?” She could tell that the two got along but she was more interested in what he had to think about the relationship. “Well, what matters is how you feel about him.” Alex told Meredith, encouraging her to talk about her feelings rather than his own. The best friends made their way back to the couch and Alex tossed Meredith a blanket. “Now, tell me what made you fall for him.” Alex was genuinely interested in Meredith’s response to this. It wasn’t like he hadn’t already made up his mind about Cormac, but he wanted to hear the truth from Meredith before telling her what he thought.
“He’s just the best. He loves the kids, they love him, and he always makes sure to talk to the kids about Derek – he loves seeing how they light up when they get to talk about their dad. He just instantly knows when I need to deal with something by myself or if he needs to help me out, he never oversteps, and he never gets jealous when I talk about Derek. I’m telling you Alex, Cristina really knew what she was doing when she sent him to Seattle. I’m really glad she did.” For the next five minutes, Meredith continued to list off all the things he did that made her smile, laugh, and just feel genuinely happy. Alex chuckled to himself listening to his best friend ramble about Cormac. “What?” Meredith’s heart began pounding when she realized he was laughing. “Dude, you’re in love.” He smirked and laughed at her a little more. “Like, in love, in love. You’re infatuated. I hope you’ve told him by now because it’s plastered all over your lovesick face every time you look at him. Have you told him you’re in love with him yet?” He asked her. “We’ve almost said I love you a couple of times. But no.” Alex’s eyes widened. “Trust your heart, Mer. He’s not Derek, but he knows that. And it really seems like he respects that. You’re lucky to have found him.” Meredith smiled at Alex. She knew he was right. She did love Cormac Hayes. Her heart was full – she’d just gotten her best friend’s seal of approval, she accepted the fact that she was in love because of it, and she was sitting with Alex, on his couch, drinking tequila with him just like old times. They moved on from the topic of love fairly quickly, and instead they sat together, laughing and reminiscing about their past.
--
Meredith arrived back at the hotel about 2 hours later. Her children were fast asleep, but Cormac was still wide awake, laying in their bed. “Hey.” Meredith whispered as she quietly put her purse down. Cormac looked up from his phone and smiled at his girlfriend. “Hey, did you have fun?” Meredith smiled back at him. “Yeah, I did. Thanks for taking the kids back to the hotel. I think all the playing with Alexis and Eli wore them out.” She laughed quietly, as did he. “Yeah, I don’t think we’ll have to worry about them till later tomorrow morning.” Meredith finished getting out of her daytime clothes, put on her shorts and bralette, and climbed into bed. “I was waiting for you to get back before going to sleep.” He whispered in her ear. She kissed him tenderly as she remembered what Alex had told her. “You know, talking with Alex tonight made me realize something.” Meredith said as she rested her head on his shoulder. “Oh yeah, what?” He asked, lacing their fingers together. “I don’t want you to freak out.” She said, looking up at him. His face changed to be incredibly confused very quickly. “What would I freak out about?” He asked her, worried.
“While I was talking with him tonight, I realized that, uh, I love you. More than that - I’m in love with you. With us, with the idea of our families coming together. And, uh, it’s totally okay if you don’t say it back, or are a little spooked. I know the first I love you can take time to come to terms with.” Cormac’s face became more and more surprised with every word Meredith whispered. She turned on her side, fully expecting Cormac to turn away from her while he processed everything that she’d just told him. But, like it was an everyday occurrence, Cormac immediately shifted and turned on his side as well, facing her back, and he wrapped his arm around her waist. During 2 minutes of complete silence, Cormac Hayes kept thinking about how Abigail told him before dying that she wanted to see him fall in love again. He thought about how happy he was with Meredith, how deeply she respected Abby and how much she loved hearing the stories he’d tell her about her.
So, even though it scared him, he pulled Meredith closer to him in the bed, to which she tangled their legs together and laced their fingers together, and he whispered in her ear, “I’m in love with you too.” He could feel her once racing heartbeat begin to stabilize, and her breathing became more normal as well. Though he couldn’t see her face, he could feel her smiling as their faces nuzzled together. He placed one last kiss on her neck and cheek before closing his eyes and falling asleep, happily holding the woman he loved. He knew for a fact that Abigail was rooting for them in heaven, and that she was happy to see them so happy, to see her sons so loved, and to see Cormac finally fulfilling her final wish for him.
the one where they met in med school - part 8
on-call rooms and sneaking around
Tumblr media
(July 2007 cont.)
It had been about two weeks since Jo had started at Seattle Grace and she was loving it. Sure, she was drowning in scut because Alex was not going easy on her, but she was loving it. So far, Jo had scrubbed in on four surgeries and got to observe many more. Out of all the interns, Jo and Lexie had been the ones favored by the attendings. They requested the young interns on their service and gave them many opportunities to learn. As a result, Jo hadn’t really seen Alex at work during the past few weeks. They had been on conflicting schedules and only ever crossed paths briefly in the mornings during rounds.
So, it wasn’t really a surprise when Jo found herself being pulled into an on-call room and pressed against the door. She gasped as Alex brought her into a breathtaking kiss, “Well, hello to you too.”
“God, I’ve missed you,” Alex breathed out as his lips trailed down her neck. “Who knew that I’d talk to you less now than I did when you were living in Boston?”
They continued to kiss when Jo remembered something, “Wait. I thought we weren’t supposed to use on-call rooms to have sex. That was one of your rules, wasn’t it?”
“Screw the rules,” Alex’s hands found their way under her scrub top. “I haven’t gotten to use these on-call rooms for sex, but now that you’re here…”
“You’re a horrible influence,” Jo shivered as she allowed Alex to remove her top. “But lucky for you, I find it extremely sexy.”
“You’re talking too much,” Alex’s words are muffled as his lips move from her neck down her chest. “Stop talking Jo.”
Jo thinks she does a good job of not talking as she and Alex quickly undress each other, falling onto the uncomfortable on-call room bed in a tangle of limbs. Their movements are desperate, both of them knowing that one of them would be paged for something soon and wanting to finish what they’d started. Try as she might though, Jo couldn’t keep her moans quiet.
“Mmm Alex,” Jo threw her head back as Alex picked up his pace above her, his teeth coming down to bite at her collar bone. “Oh god, don’t stop. Alex…” “Shhh you gotta keep it down,” Alex chuckled against her neck as she moaned his name again. “Jo I swear you’re gonna be the death of me.” A mischievous smirk appeared on Jo’s face as she used her body weight to flip Alex onto his back, her hips moving in a slow circle that brought out a low moan from Alex, “Who can’t keep quiet now?” “I don’t wanna hear anything from you unless it’s my name,” Alex’s voice was a deep growl as his hands slipped to Jo’s hips, a smirk playing onto his face as she did exactly what he’d asked of her.
Ten minutes later, Jo snuck out of the on call room. Or at least she attempted to…
“You two are so freaking loud,” Lexie was leaning against the opposite wall, an unamused expression on her face as she looked up at Jo. “I heard you down the hall and I’ve been standing here since you disgusting humans started dirty talking to each other. You’re lucky that no one else has walked by, you’re welcome for that by the way.”
Alex peaked his head out of the on call room, smirking at Lexie as he spotted her, “Hey Lexipedia!” With a groan and an eye roll thrown in their direction, Lexie left the grinning couple and walked down the hall. Alex and Jo watched in amusement as their friend walked away. Jo looked over at Alex, “So, whose service are you on today?”
Alex let out a puff of laughter, “We just finished having sex and now you wanna make small talk about work?”
“Well, I have to distract myself because if not, I’d drag you back in there for more,” Jo’s eyes darkened. “There’s something about seeing you in scrubs that does wonders for me.”
“Oh, that’s right. I forgot about that scrubs kink of yours,” Alex leaned in as he whispered lowly. “I guess we’ll have to take advantage of that another day.”
Jo felt a shiver run down her spine. She was about to open her mouth in a flirty response when they were interrupted by a voice, “Alex!”
The pair jumped, putting some distance between themselves and turned to find a young blonde woman staring at them questioningly. She ran up and let out a breath as she faced Alex, “I’ve been looking everywhere for you. We’ve got that surgery with Sloan and Shepherd in an hour.”
“Iz! Yeah, I’m coming. I was… busy,” Alex explained.
“Uh huh,” Izzie looked back and forth between the two individuals in front of her. “Who’s this?”
“Jo Wilson,” Jo extended her hand. “I’m one of Dr. Karev’s interns.”
“Hmm, well, it’s nice to meet you Wilson,” Izzie shook Jo’s hand. She looked back at Alex. “We really gotta go. You coming?”
“Yeah. I’m right behind you,” Alex assured as he cast an apologetic glance toward Jo. He followed Izzie down the hallway and sighed, noticing her pursed lips. “Say what you want to say.”
“What?”
“You make that face when you have an opinion on something and are trying hard not to say it. Just spit it out and say it,” Alex huffed as Izzie came to a halt in the middle of the hallway.
“Is that a hickey on your neck?” Izzie placed both hands on her hips and stared him down. “And don’t even think about trying to lie to me.”
Alex brought his hand up to neck and shrugged nervously, “Yeah… I guess it is. My girlfriend is in town and we—ya know? You guys call her Dracula for a reason.”
It wasn’t a lie, Jo was in town. He just hoped his excuse would be enough to get Izzie off his back. Izzie narrowed her eyes at him, still unconvinced, “I’m going to let this go… for now. But if I see you pulling anything shady, I will beat your ass.”
***
“You have to be more careful,” Alex’s voice was muffled by Jo’s lips as they stumbled from the doorway of the on call room towards one of the beds. “Izzie saw the hickey you gave me last week. I had to say my girlfriend was in town.”
Jo pulled back from Alex, whipping her scrub top off to reveal a lacy red bra that made Alex hold back a groan, “But your girlfriend is in town.”
“Jesus Christ, you’re the worst ya know,” Alex leaned back down to capture Jo’s lips, forgoing the bed so he could push her up against the wall. A heavy knock sounded on the door, neither Alex or Jo reacted to it. “Leave it be, they’ll take the hint.”
“Alex! Are you in there,” Cristina’s voice sounded from the other side of the door, making Alex stop what he was doing. “Hello? Evil Spawn?”
Alex sighed, calling out but not moving from his position against Jo, “What do you want Yang? I’m trying to sleep.”
“I need to talk to you,” Cristina sounded impatient, as if whatever she was going to say couldn’t wait. “Pleeeease?”
Alex fixed his shirt and opened the door a crack to look at Cristina. He scowled, "What?"
“Why are you so grumpy?” Cristina rolled her eyes. She tried looking past him into the room. “Can I come in?”
“No,” Alex grunted, making sure to block Jo from view. “I’m trying to sleep and you are disturbing me. Now either tell me what you want or I’m gonna close the door in your face.”
“Geez, Evil Spawn, calm down. If you aren’t going to let me in, then come outside,” Cristina stared Alex down until he conceded and finally exited the on-call room, closing the door behind him quickly.
From her place inside, Jo pressed her ear up against the door to listen in on the conversation going on outside.
“Is there a point to all of this?” Alex raised his eyebrows, the frown on his face deepening.
“I know that there’s a woman in the on-call room with you,” Cristina crossed her arms in front of her body. “I saw Three’s little friend walk in there about two minutes before you did.”
“Who?”
“Three? Mer’s little sister that came out of nowhere?” Cristina clarified. She narrowed her eyes. “She’s always hanging out with that hairball--I don’t remember her name right now. Anyway, I saw her walk into the on-call room. Then I saw you walk in. Which wouldn’t have been an issue, except imagine my surprise when five minutes went by and you still hadn’t walked out.”
“So, what? I can’t sleep in the same on-call room as some intern?” Alex shook his head. “What the hell is your problem?”
“Not when the intern you’re sharing an on-call room with is the same intern that Izzie told us you were flirting with last week.”
“Oh my God, freaking Izzie,” Alex rubbed a hand over his face. “There’s nothing going on between me and my intern. I have a girlfriend that I love. She’s the only one I’d have sex with. Is that all?”
“Fine. I just wanted to remind you to think with your brain and not your dick. You can go back to sleep,” Cristina nodded curtly.
Jo--who’d been listening in on the conversation--giggled quietly on the other side of the door. She found it endearing that Alex’s friends were ready to keep him accountable. It was heart-warming to know that they took time out of their days to make sure that he wasn’t cheating on her despite never having met her. She jumped slightly when the door opened up again, revealing Alex’s exasperated face.
He shut the door behind him and locked it, “Where were we?”
“Mmm right about the part where you don’t sleep with your intern I think,” Alex let a low growl out as he wrapped his arms around Jo and pressed her against the wall, a giggle coming from her as his hands wandered down to tug at her scrub pants. “You know I wore a matching set just for you…” “You’re lucky we’re at work otherwise I’d make you scream.”
a bit for storage
I’m going to post a buncha my grey’s fic! Not everything is connected yet, I just write in bits and pieces. Alex Karev x OC (for now), loosely follows canon, just not izzie. Anyways this is what I got so far:
TW: depression, suicide, death
Selected bits from S1E1
Finally. Her first day. She was indescribably excited, but anxious thoughts kept invading her mind. She’d worked her ass off for this, and seeing it’s fruition as a residency at Seattle Grace was so rewarding. Well, until Dr. Webber killed the mood.
“Say hello to your competition. Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty. Five of you will crack under the pressure. Two of you will be asked to leave. This is your starting line. This is your arena. How well you play...That's up to you.”
What was this, a gladiator fight? Her brows furrowed, but as she glanced around, everyone was completely serious. Well, fight she would.
She zoned out, hoping she’d get placed with people she met at the mixer, as Webber started listing the interns and their assigned residents, until her name caught her attention.
“...Dr. Heather Palmer, Bailey. Dr. Isobel Stevens, Bailey…”
Someone nudged her from behind.
“Palmer, you got the nazi.” Great.
She didn’t wanna push the envelope on the first day, so she had brushed her curls out and slicked them back into the tightest ballet bun she could without giving herself a headache.
“You’re gonna be a suck up aren’t you? I can tell. Regular Mrs. Grundy.” Alex, another intern, snorted as she bobby pinned her bangs back. She glared at him, but he missed her stare as his eyes roamed over to Dr. Stevens.
The other interns muttered amongst themselves as Heather finished tying her shoes, trying to imagine what the “nazi” looked like. A short black woman walked in, and no one paid her much attention until she raised her voice.
“I have five rules. Memorize them. Rule number one, don't bother sucking up, I already hate you, that's not gonna change. Trauma protocol, phone lists, pagers. Nurses will page you, you answer every page at a run. A run, that's rule number two. Your first shift starts now and lasts forty-eight hours. You're interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain, you run labs, write orders, work every second night till you drop and don't complain!”
She rushed out of the locker room at a quick walk, and everyone scrambled to follow her. Slamming open a nearby door, she said flatly, “On call rooms. Attendings hog them, sleep when you can, where you can, which brings me to rule number three, if I'm sleeping, don't wake me, unless your patient is actually dying. Rule number four, the dying patient better not be dead when I get there, not only would you have killed someone, you would have also woke me for no good reason, we clear?”
Silence fell, and Heather and the blonde girl, Izzie, vigorously nodded their heads.
“Um, Dr. Bailey?” Heather said softly.
“Yes,” Bailey said, staring daggers.
“You said there were five rules? That was only four.” Dr. Bailey stared a hole through Heather, chilling her to the bone. Thankfully, Bailey’s pager started beeping.
“Rule number five. When I move, you move.”
“Nurses are the ones implementing most of our work, dickhead.”
“Whatever. Maybe you should’ve been a nurse then.” Alex grabbed his chart, and sauntered away.
“Palmer, what is it?”
“Pain, paresthesia, pallor, pulselessness, paralysis. Compartment syndrome.”
“So? Book an OR!” Bailey yelled.
“Oh! Right, booking a plastics OR for a fasciotomy.”
Selected bits from S1E3
Alex stormed into the locker room as Heather and Izzie were changing. “Morning, Dr. Model.”
“Dr. Evil Spawn.” Stevens deadpanned.
“Ooh, nice tat. They airbrush that out for the catalogs?”
“I don't know. What do they do for the 666 on your skull?” Heather snickered, earning a glare from Karev, but effectively shutting him up. As they finished clipping their badges on, Palmer turned to Izzie, lowering her voice a tad.
“Iz, I don’t blame you! If I was hot I would’ve done the same thing.”
“Oh, shut up, you’re so hot.” Izzie retorted.
“I’m not skinny blonde hot.” Heather crossed her arms.
“Whatever, sexy brunette goddess.”
She let out a giggle, pleased to have the complement returned.
“Are you guys gonna make out now, or what?” Alex interrupted. Heather scoffed, leaving the room with Dr. Stevens in tow.
Dr. Palmer’s patient was scheduled for a lap cholecystectomy at 3 that afternoon with gensurg, so she had time to kill. Heading for the locker room to grab her wallet, she overheard a raised voice. Walking in, she saw a crowd had gathered, and Izzie stood in her bra and underwear.
“Let's study them, shall we? Gather around and check out the booty that put Izzie Stevens through med school. Have you had enough or should I continue? Because I have a few more very interesting tattoos. You want to call me Dr. Model? That's fine. Just remember that while you're sitting on 200 grand of student loans, I'm out of debt.” Izzie yanked her clothes back on and stormed out of the room, nearly knocking Heather over.
Everyone awkwardly filed out, leaving Alex and Heather staring at each other from across the room.
“Where do you get off?” She sighed, leaving her wallet still in her locker, and left for the break room empty handed.
Additional Bits That I’m Working In
Sure, he was a whore, but...seeing him with the kids stirred something in her. It freaked her out. He was Alex Karev, Dr. Evil Spawn, cheater, syphilis giver, aloof, uncommitted, but stubborn, calm, steady, yet exhilarating, adroit, wry, and so clever. And so kind. So kind. He held the premie in his arms, a crooked smile on his face, and feeling her gaze, glanced up to meet Heather’s eyes. She lit on fire under that gaze.
“Palmer.” Addison’s voice brought her out of her thoughts, and she turned away, towards the direction of Addison’s call. Alex’s eyes followed her out of the room.
“So who’s going with Dr. Montgomery-Shepard?”
“I will!”
“Palmer, you’re in Peds or OB everyday. I’m putting you in cardio.”
“Damn it.” she muttered. Cristina’s mouth dropped open in offense.
“What? She’s crazy and ungrateful and-turning down cardio?”
“Yang, take her place in OB today.”
“For God’s sake…” Cristina huffed and went to find Addison, leaving Heather with Burke.
“Hey, Joe! How’s your day been?” Heather hopped up on one of the barstools, trying not to slouch due to lack of back support.
“Eh, so-so. Whatcha drinking?”
“Hm. I’m not sure,” she turned to her right. “Alex, what am I drinking?”
“We’re off tomorrow. Have some damn tequila, Palmer.” he said with a smirk.
“Don’t mind if I do. Could I get a flight, Joe?”
“Alright! Make sure you don’t die of alcohol poisoning, Dr. Grundy.” Alex jabbed her in the side, making her flinch. She whacked him on the back of the head teasingly.
“Here ya are, Dr. Palmer.”
“Joe, please, it’s Heather.”
He chuckled, heading down the row as she took her first shot.
“No chaser? You psycho. That’s pretty hot.”
“Yeah, I know.”
And him. Just standing there, arms crossed, chewing his Extra peppermint gum, not a care in the world. He was leaning against the nurses’ station, and she noted with envy the eyes that weren’t hers staring at him.
Just laying there, hearing Mere’s bedsprings, Izzie’s rustling, George’s soft snores...she was so alone. She had no reason to be. Full house, friends that cared for her...or did they? It’s not like they went out of their way to make plans outside of work, other than Joe’s, which wasn’t exactly the healthiest of bonding activities. But no one fought for her. She didn’t even fight for herself, and she could feel it again, the sinking. The numbness was settling in again. She stared at the ceiling fan, spinning, spinning, spinning.
“It’s depression! Just...it hurts all the fucking time, Alex! And I just, file it away, keep myself busy with work, with Joe’s, with you-”
“Oh, so I’m just here to keep you busy, is that it?”
“Isn’t that what you wanted? Just sex?”
“Shut up!” He took a ragged breath. “Please, just leave me alone, Heather.”
She pursed her lips. “If you wanted-I mean I-”
“I asked you to leave.”
Defeated, she met his eyes and turned back down the garden path to her car, careful not to trip in the dark. She wouldn’t be sleeping here tonight.
Izzie hadn’t moved from the bathroom floor in about 18 hours. Heather was inclined to go lay down with her, but it wasn’t her rotation yet. George was in there keeping her company for now.
“Who’s next?”
“Meredith. When I tried to kill myself, it was because I saw no way out.” She fiddled with the sheets of Meredith’s bed to be rid of some of the fidgety anxiety. “Just having to be mediocre, feeling I wasn’t important to anybody…” she trailed off, looking in Meredith’s direction. “Mere, you have so much. You have such a gift and I know you don’t want to hear this, but you can’t be so careless. There are people who care about you, people who love-”
“Okay, Palmer, I appreciate what you’re trying to do, I really do, sharing your trauma and all that, but I’m fine. Really. I didn’t try to kill myself, thanks.”
Heather sat there until Meredith raised her eyebrows, a clear order to get out. Turning the corner she ran smack into Karev, whose eyes were haunted.
“You tried to kill youself?”
“Ha. Yeah, big whoop.” She looked at him witheringly. Her facade fell when they locked eyes and she shrugged. “G’night, Alex.” She sidestepped him, heading to the elevator.
“Okay, but you can see us being endgame right?” Meredith asked again desperately.
“Mere, I’ve already told you, you and Derek, if you want to make it work, you have to put in the effort! It depends on you two, not some magical twist of fate.”
“God, if he so much as looks at me funny, I’m reporting for sexual harassment.”
“That’s what everyone says before they sleep with him.” Callie said wryly.
No. Because he had this thing with Rebecca. And she was supposed to be with Ben. But, God was it hard to give him space.
“Please…” tears shined on his face, and his nose had started to run, “Please, please, please…”
He grabbed her by the back of her neck, forehead to forehead, pleading. “Alex-”
“Please...” She wiped his tears away, but new ones replaced them just as quickly.
“Callie, oh my God! Congratulations!”
“Thank you, Heather! George and I just-did it!’
“Lexie! Wanna work with me today?”
“Oh my gosh, yes!”
Heather pulled her to the side. “Thank God, you’re my favorite. Don’t tell the others.”
He pulled her closer to him, as if that would save her from the water that poured into the elevator, soaking their scrubs through. Their shoes were squelching as they ran to dry land. Except, of course, there wasn’t any. The whole floor was flooded.
“Oh, God, it’s seeping through my socks.” Heather groaned.
“I can handle the mess.” Alex said softly. “You know that.”
“But- I’m so much. Alex, Mere thinks she’s all dark and twisty or whatever, but that’s nothing, not to invalidate her but, it’s nothing compared-”
He took her by the sides of the face, eyes open, honest.
“I said, I can handle it. Do you want this?”
Heather nodded, as a loss for words.
“Then bring it on.”
“Get a crash cart, dammit!” Heather yelled, voice cracking as tears spilled over. She met Alex’s eyes, just as glassy as hers, and he took over compressions.
Her knees buckled. She fell to the floor as if in slow motion. Izzie, first, now George. Not Georgie. Her 007, her Bambi. O’Malley. The pain was constant, unceasing. Because he really was gone. She imagined him, like he should’ve been the next day, new Army uniform, neat buzzcut...her head was too full; it was too much. Her body wouldn’t move, her mind was debilitated-then strong arms grasping her, meeting her here, on the floor.
“He was. George was hit by a fucking bus!” They burst out in laughter, trying to stifle any echos so passersby wouldn’t freak out.
The addition of Mercy West was hell on earth. Even just the loss of Izzie made the workload shoot through the roof.
Amnesia part 2
Hey guys- this is the second part of the ‘Amnesia’ series.  I wrote this part long ago too, but it has been edited and proofread this time around ;)
Part 1 can be found here:
http://ailingnoor.tumblr.com/post/162816736156/amnesia-part-1
Again, thank you to the lovely @jia911 for helping me to proofread this!
p.s. Also this is for @toevenexist and @mediterraneansummer and anyone else who requested for a continuation ;)
Ever since he reached adulthood, Owen Hunt had always wanted to become a father. Unlike other men his age who were still sleeping with random girls- he was already looking out for the one- the right girl with whom he could settle down and start family. He was matured for his age- and it might be due to the fact that he lost his father at such a young age and was forced to take on the role of the man in his family after that.
For many years- he was on the search for the right woman for him. Sure - he dated many ladies- but they all ended up running away when he started discussing about being in a long term relationship- or told him straight up that they weren’t ready to be in a committed relationship with him. He was being turned down and disappointed many more times than he could recall.
Then came Cristina Yang. She was a force to be reckoned with, having so much energy, spark and passion for her job. She was smart, witty and passionate- everything Owen loved in a woman. There was only one issue-she simply didn’t want children. When she confessed to Owen about it - he thought that he could change her mind about children. He thought that once she laid eyes on their first child- her maternal hormones would take over and she would immediately fall in love with their bundle of joy.
But how wrong he was. It was just not meant to be.
Although he stayed by Cristina’s side when she aborted their baby- he was furious. Furious that she got rid of a new life which they had created together. Angry that she took away his dream of becoming a father. Most of all- he was livid that she didn’t even bother consulting him or asking his permission to abort the baby. The baby was his too! It just proved to him that he didn’t matter enough to her. If she really cared for him- she would’ve discussed it with him first and seeked his opinion before going ahead with the abortion.
After that- he stopped looking for the right woman. He didn’t think that he would ever find the right woman for him, the woman who could fulfill his dreams of becoming a father.
Then Amelia Shepherd came along, like a breath of fresh air. She was the woman of his dreams. She was fierce, loyal and passionate, and at the same time kind, loving and caring. The bonus? She loved kids too. He could see how great she was with the Shepherd children, and on more than one occasion even before they got married, he found himself dreaming of having kids with her one day.
____________________________________________________
Now standing in the completed nursery and staring at the crib which would accommodate their baby in 2 months time- he didn’t know how he got so lucky. His dream finally came true. He was finally going to be a father and he couldn’t wait to meet his daughter. He took a seat next to the crib and stared at it, imagining their baby lying in the crib one day.
He must have dozed off beside the crib for a few moments because he was rudely awoken by the sound of his phone ringing.
It was April. Oh no- was he late for his shift!
A quick glance at the nursery clock told him that he still had half an hour before his shift. Maybe April needed an extra pair of hands.
‘Hello?’ Owen answered.
’ Owen…you have to come to the hospital now.’ there was a sense of urgency in her voice.
’ Are you ok April? Lots of trauma coming in? I’ll be right there.’ said Owen as he exited the nursery.
’ No… It’s Amelia. She’s here now.’ April sounded like she was sobbing over the phone.
’ Yes- she drove off to work half an hour ago.’ Owen didn’t get why April sounded so frantic over the phone.
’ Owen… she has been in a car accident. Polytrauma… Please just come now.’ April finally regained her composure.
At April’s words, Owen dropped his phone. He felt his heart sink and his whole world spinning. It was like a rug had been pulled out from under him.
’ Hello? Hello?’ April’s voice could still be heard over the phone.
Owen drove as fast as he could to Grey Sloan Memorial, his mind racing. What happened to Amelia? Was she conscious? Is she….no she has to be alive!! How about their baby? He forgot to ask about the baby! _______________________________________________________________
He reached the hospital in record time. April whisked him immediately to Trauma room 4.
Owen’s heart sank as he saw Amelia, his Amelia lying pale and lifeless on the bed, intubated and connected to a ventilator, surrounded by monitoring machines. She looked unrecognisable , a pale shadow of her usually feisty self.
’ Amelia’ he whispered , approaching her bedside cautiously and grabbing one of her fingers.
’ Amelia- open your eyes please.’ he begged. ’ Please open your eyes for me.’
There was no response from her.
He let out an primal groan. ‘No, don’t leave me please Amelia!’ he cried out as the other doctors in the room looked on sympathetically. They wished they could help him.
His eyes travelled down to her now flat belly.
’ Where’s the baby?’ he asked April, his heart racing again. Surely the powers above couldn’t be that cruel to take his baby away from him too?
’ She’s in the NICU now.’ April replied softly.  Arizona had to do a crash C section just now to save both of them.. Alex is working on her. She’s stable at the moment- she’s in good hands. ’ she said, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.
Owen felt like all his energy had been sapped out of him , due to mixed emotions of relief at hearing that his daughter was stable and horror of seeing his wife fighting for her life. Amelia couldn’t leave him alone with their little daughter. This was supposed to be a happy occasion, a day filled with joy and gratitude- the birth of their first child. And yet it was being marred with tragedy. This was certainly not how he envisioned the birth of their first child to be like. Amelia should be there, awake and smiling happily up at him, with the baby in her arms. But now he didn’t even know if she would ever wake up. Nobody knew.
Just then, Amelia started coding.
’ Her blood pressure is dropping. ’ April cried out.
’ She’s in Vfib!’ cried Bailey- who had been called down to the ER to assess Amelia for abdominal trauma. Get the crash cart ready- we need to defibrillate her!’
’ Everybody clear… 1..2..3… Charge!’ Bailey was now taking charge as the Chief of Surgery.
There was no response.
’ No.. No… Shepherd… You don’t get to do this to us!’ cried Bailey , as she charged the defibrillator again. ’ You’ve a husband and a beautiful new baby girl waiting for you- you don’t get to do this. ’
_______________________________________________________________
Meanwhile, Owen was now sitting in a trancelike state on the floor of the ER room, leaning against the wall, his knees drawn up to his chest. He had tuned out what was going on around him as the other doctors worked frantically to save his beloved wife’s life. He was still in a state of shock, he felt like he was in a horrible nightmare. Just that morning he was kissing his beautiful wife and feeling his baby kick, and now, his baby was in the NICU and his wife was fighting for her life. What a cruel twist of fate it was . What had he done to deserve this?
He didn’t hear Bailey yelling at Amelia to return back to them as she defibrillated the neurosurgeon a few more times. He didn’t hear the collective sigh of relief in the ER as the cardiac monitor finally showed sinus rhythm again. He didn’t hear Webber declaring that there was no intraabdominal bleeding from the bedside scan and they needed to proceed for a CT brain to rule out intracranial bleed.
He was still in a zombie like state when Amelia was being rushed into CT, and Meredith came to escort him to the CT room where Nelson and Stephanie were stationed behind the computer. What they were discussing was a blur to him.
He was jolted out of his trance when someone called his name.
’ Dr Hunt.’ Stephanie was now standing in front of him and with a sympathetic look in her eyes. Gosh, he hated how everyone in the hospital was now looking at him like that.
She continued as she didn’t get a reply from him.
’ We need your consent. The CT brain showed that Dr Shepherd has a huge intracranial bleed and we need to evacuate it as soon as possible.’
’ Just do it.’ Owen muttered. ’ Do whatever it takes to bring my wife back to me.’
Stephanie nodded silently as she escorted Owen to the waiting area outside OR2.
_______________________________________________________________
Owen was not a religious person, and he never prayed before. But now, sitting in the waiting room, his knees drawn up to his chest and leaning against the wall again, he prayed fervently. He prayed earnestly to God to bring his wife back to him. He prayed that Amelia would come back to him, he missed her so much. He would do anything just to see her dimpled smile again and hear her laughter again. He prayed for their new daughter, who didn’t have a name yet, to pull through in the NICU.
'God or whatever power above, if you’re listening- please don’t take my wife away from me. I need her, our daughter needs her mother.’ he cried out silently.
Just then, the tears came without warning. Before he knew it, he was sobbing fully, something which he never did before- not even when his father died or his sister went missing. He had been strong for too long and he needed to release all his pent up emotions.
He felt a tap on his shoulder and came face to face with Meredith Grey.
He continued sobbing, ignoring her as she took her seat on the floor beside him.
’ She’ll pull through.’ Meredith said softly but confidently. ’ She’s a Shepherd after all and Shepherds are strong headed. I know she’ll pull through.’ she repeated.
Owen finally looked at her, tears still rolling down his cheeks.
‘ She’s a fighter.’ Meredith added as she gave him an encouraging smile and patted his shoulder.
They both stood up immediately in anticipation as Stephanie entered the waiting room, still in her scrubs, sporting a relieved look on her face.
Meredith and Owen both stared at her wordlessly. As surgeons, they were used to informing family members of patients the outcome of surgeries, but it was totally different when they themselves were the family members.
Stephanie cleared her throat . ’ We’ve managed to evacuate the clot, she’s now being pushed to the ICU. Her vital signs are stable now, although she did code once on the operating table. You can go and see her soon.’ she said as the two surgeons standing in front of her heaved sighs of relief. ’But don’t get your hopes up yet, we still need to assess her nervous system functions when she wakes up.’ she added.
’ Thank you Edwards.’ Meredith said as she gave Stephanie an awkward hug.
_______________________________________________________________
For the next two days, Owen camped in the hospital, going back and forth between staying in Amelia’s room and visiting their daughter in the NICU. According to Alex, the baby girl was thriving, considering she was a premature baby and for that he was grateful. His new daughter looked exactly like Amelia. Now he just needed Amelia to wake up so that they could decide on a name for the baby. The baby needed her mother.
He hardly slept, showered or ate, spending most of his time either at Amelia’s bedside or beside their baby girl’s incubator.
He refused to go back for a quick shower or change of clothes when Arizona offered to stay longer in Amelia’s room to monitor her. He politely declined when Meredith or Maggie offered to take his place by Amelia’s bedside. He wanted to be there when she finally woke up.
_______________________________________________________________
It has already been more than two days since Amelia’s accident. They had extubated her the day before and she was due to wake up anytime soon. Owen refused to leave her bedside for even one minute.
He was dozing off on the lazy chair by her bedside when a sudden movement jolted him awake from his sleep.
He stared at Amelia’s lifeless form. He could swear he saw some movement just now. It couldn’t be another false alarm!
Suddenly Amelia’s blue eyes opened and she looked straight at him.
Owen’s heart leapt with joy as a stray tear rolled down his cheek. He thought he would never see those eyes again. The powers above have answered his prayers after all!
’ Amelia’ Owen whispered , his voice full of emotion as he gently took her hands in his. ’ You’re awake! Thank God. Please don’t do this to me ever again,you hear me? I need you, our daughter needs you.’
Amelia just stared at him, with a frightened and confused expression on her face.
'Our daughter?’ she croaked. ’ What are you talking about? Where am I?’
Owen’s heart sank to the bottom of his chest.
This is a combination of two prompts:
1) Prompt: Amelia has an accident while she is pregnant and forgets what she had with Owen. She remembers the time when she broke off her engagement and joined Grey Sloan. And she also doesn’t know that Derek is dead and whose kid she is pregnant with and all the in betweens.
2) About Owen’s feelings after Cristina aborted their baby.
As usual- comments, reblogs, messages and reviews are very much appreciated. I want to know what you guys think! :).
p.s. Part 3 has yet to be written- so it wouldn’t be up that soon...
Hey Y’all! How’s life?! No… Really… How’s life, if you can read this I want to know. I’m turning 29 & per usual it’s time for my annual blog post. I know I missed last year that’s honestly because 28 was hard, like REALLY HARD. I thought I was going to lose my shit at 27 & didn’t I lost it at 28 instead. I had just moved back home to little oh Stratford, America. I felt like a failure because only people could see me as a failure not because I was one. I had just left 3 months of homelessness in Arkansas only a handful of people knew that. Only a handful of people will read this & maybe understand why I was so jaded when I came back to Oklahoma from Arkansas. I didn’t leave my house from October until around my birthday time in March in 2018 & that’s when all the things I had avoided for 6 months hit me, when I turned 28. I had just turned my back to all the hurt, all I knew I was living back with mom & dad, with grandma & grandpa next door & for the first time in those 3 lonely months I didn’t feel like I was going to get hurt or abandoned. So that’s to make up for my lack of not posting on my 28th birthday but we’re past that now YAY!!! (Side Note: the best thing that happened to me in my 28th year was gaining a precious addition to my family, my child the one, the only Bella Rea. She’s the best thing to happen to me, mainly because I have to grow up to take care of her, dogs are a lot of work. Especially when yours is the highest energy breed on the planet {Miniature Australian Shepard, Blue Heeler}. So now onto 29; guys, gals, friends and strangers HELLO, my name is Donna Gale Cosby and I’m not scared to be one year closer to thirty. Fuck the 20’s to be quite honest bring them 30’s on! I thought I’d be terrified to almost be 30 but instead I’m really excited! I’m changing a lot in my life currently. For anyone who knows me I’ve always been very earth conscious, I mean ask the people who have ridden in my car when I come to an immediate stop to make them pick up the trash they threw out the window or my brother who I had the honor of living with singly on my recycling obsession. I’m extremely proud of myself for wanting to take care of the home God has given us. Maybe it’s the farmer’s daughter in me, maybe it’s the granola, hippie, crunchy in me whatever of those words you use to describe me I won’t be offended people often think those words hurt they don’t one bit they actually bring me pure joy. I feel like every time I write this yearly post, I make a reference how I feel the call to write and blog more often and most of the time I don’t. I’m going to try and get a blog in once a month this year, I feel that’s a reasonable goal, that’s one huge thing about my age, my goals are becoming most realistic. I’ve always been a talk aloud over achiever. I want to stop that this year, I want to silently journal those this year and only speak out loud to a few people my crazy big unrealistic dreams. I want to find my select few of people just like Jesus did and stick to telling them all the things that run through my crazy brain. I want to be more intentional with my relationships because the older I get the further my best of friends get away. I have 2 absolute been with me thick and thin best friends. One lives in Georgia the other in Montana, those ladies know the complete full and absolutely ridiculous Donna Gale. I love you both shout out!!! I have another circle of friends, friends that have been with me for awhile too, I’m not discounting you by any means, just know my Merideth Grey and Cristina Yang relationship is with 2 gals and I can’t help that. Things I’m already doing that I’d like to continue doing this year would be recycling, learning to be more frugal, becoming and embracing my minimalistic lifestyle more and more. I want to continue being the old lady I’ve been the past month getting up between 5 & 6 to watch the morning news, I like knowing what’s going on around me! Things I want to start doing better are going to the gym or just working out in someway more in anyway possible, I want fit Donna back ASAP, but I have to be realistic and realize she’s gonna take a couple of months. I also want to journal better, I want to write down my everyday life and embrace it. Say what makes me happy and what makes me sad. I have extreme depression and finding the root to that is something I want to learn. I want to be more earth conscious, I want to see ways I can be better, I want to inform more people how they can come alongside this journey with me and make it less difficult for them no matter where they are in life. I want to continue living my gluten free lifestyle with passion, getting back to cooking has been hard to me after the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and the unclear but very clear to me diagnosis of celiac disease. I’m an old lady and I’m proud! I have to take care of myself. I want to bake, cook, and juice to my heart’s desire. Yes, I love juicing thank you Arkansas for the found love of the taste of chard and beets! I could write a whole blog dedicating it to Arkansas learnings and loves. I would encourage anyone to get out of your comfort zone and move to a place where you know no one and embrace what it will teach you. Just don’t go homeless in the process, that’s not fun, you learn A LOT but it’s definitely not the greatest time of your life. I want to continue drinking enough water. I most importantly want to get CRAZY OILY, for anyone who’s been following me on social media lately you know I’ve stepped into the Young Living with arms wide open and a heart wide open ready to learn. This isn’t a fad that will last a couple of months, this is something on my earth awareness list that makes me a true believer even more in natural medicine. My goal is to get off medicine completely, but I feel that would be truly unrealistic due to all my conditions with bi-polar disorder. YES, let’s talk mental health, I am an advocate because I have it. If you ever want to talk mental health hit a sister up, I’m totally down for it all. I visit and psychologist and I love him. He helps me appreciate who I am as a person. I see a counselor, it makes me feel like I’m helping myself not that I’m a failure. You’re not a failure for asking for help. I feel there are two things I could go on and on about that’s mental health and physical health. They’re my passion. I’m passionate for people and people deal with these issues EVERYDAY. I want to be for the people, like guys I’m running for President or something. Speaking of running for President get registered to vote and go vote! You have a voice, you are being heard, even if it’s just by one person, even if that one person could be me. I want you to know you are loved and you are worthy, and everything is going to be okay. One thing about my “blogging” is it’s random and all over the place, I don’t necessarily stick to one topic or idea, this is just how my brain works sorry not sorry. Another thing I want to accomplish in this upcoming year is getting out of debt, man one thing I don’t like talking is money because I’m bad at it, like REALLY bad at it. Thankfully I have people on my team that are not. That’s what I would encourage you all to do, make up your team, your squad and let them all be different and talented in every way. We all need people, no matter what. Don’t try and do it all alone that’s first no fun and extremely difficult. 29 will include making up my A team, I already have a pretty good lineup, I have a few starters but I want more. I want to make it to the playoffs, I want to win this championship. I want to walk across the finishing line of 29 knowing I put in all the effort for 30 to rock my socks off. I love you.
Hi! Love all the fics you guys write :) could you guys do one where Jo and Alex were together before Alex even started his intern year? Like idk they met somehow while Jo was in college & Alex was in led school and started dating. Everyone tries to hook up with Alex but he’s got this super secret girlfriend that everyone makes fun of him for. They could still have a large age gap or they could be like a year or two apart. Basically, I just want to see Alex holding out for Jo and being super proud & showing her off when she gets into the residency program.
the one where they met in med school - part one
So... we absolutely LOVED this prompt, took it and ran with it. This originally was supposed to be a one-shot, but it kind of grew out of control and became what it is now.
This fic was written by @iamtrebleclefstories (Leya), @doc-pickles (Nina), and tumblr-less Nat
                                                       (July 2006)
“Hey! I miss you,” Jo smiled as she talked into the phone. “How was your first week as an intern?”
“Honestly? It sucked. But it was also amazing. I don’t know if that makes sense,” Alex replied, shrugging although he knew she couldn’t see him. “And for the record, I miss you more.”
“That’s impossible. You’re so busy you don’t even have time to miss me,” Jo chuckled. “Me on them other hand? My life revolves around school and studying. Studying isn’t as fun without you around. I miss our study dates.”
“I do too,” Alex sighed. He really did miss her. A lot. All the time. He’d only been living in Seattle for a month and it was definitely a challenge. He really didn’t know how he was going to make it through the next year without her. “But at least you have Lexie there. You’re not completely alone.”
“Yeah you’ve got a point,” Jo hummed. “But Lexie doesn’t do all the things for me that you do, if you know what I mean.”
Alex groaned, “Stop it. We’re way too far away from each other to do this. I need you so bad right now and I can’t have you and it sucks.”
“Tell me about it,” Jo agreed. She couldn’t believe how far they’d come. She and Alex had been together for about 2 ½ years now. In all that time, they’d been attached at the hip. He was her best friend and she was his. It was odd not seeing him everyday. It was unnatural to sleep without him beside her at night like he’d been doing for years. “I have a week-long break next month though and I was thinking of coming to visit. I’ve saved up a bunch of money from tutoring undergrads.”
“Would it be bad of me to just keep you locked up in my apartment the whole time you’re here, because that sounds appealing,” Alex’s words sparked a string of laughter from Jo, making him sigh down the line. “I miss hearing your laugh and that makes me feel pathetic. It feels like I’m in one of those stupid rom coms you and Lexie forced me to watch all the time.” “We didn’t force you, you readily agreed to it, Karev,” Lexie’s voice echoed faintly in the background, Jo shushing her as the two bickered quietly.
“Am I on speaker?”
“Um… maybe?” Jo shrugged, knowing that he couldn’t see her through the phone. “You can’t possibly be embarrassed. Lexie has seen and heard worse from you.”
“I sure have,” Lexie yelled out from her spot across the room. “Keep going! Don’t let me stop you from being all mushy and talking about how much you miss Jo.”
Alex rolled his eyes, “Keep your comments to yourself, let me enjoy my girlfriend for a little while please.”
“So, tell me. Did you make any friends yet?” Jo asked.
“What is this? Middle school?” Alex scoffed. “I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to become a surgeon. A kickass, rich, plastic surgeon.”
“Yes I’m sure between the scut work and the enemas you have plenty of time to dream about all the money you’re gonna make,” Jo giggled down the line.
“Oh, you just wait. When you’re an intern I’m going to have you doing all my scut,” Alex warned playfully. “You’ll be sorry for making fun of my career aspirations.”
“I just can’t see you going into plastics,” Jo confessed, a large grin on her face. “Not that you wouldn’t be good at it, but I just don’t see it. Maybe general or ortho!”
“General? Wow I didn’t realize you thought so little of me,” Alex leaned back onto the brick wall behind him as he listened to the sounds of Jo’s quiet laughter.
“Hey, there’s nothing wrong with general,” Jo insisted. She groaned as she saw the time. The worst part about Alex moving across the country was the time difference. “I wish I could talk more, but I really have to get ready for bed. I will try to call you tomorrow evening.”
“I’m on-call tomorrow,” Alex revealed sadly. “I hate this. I went from going to bed next to you every night to struggling to even find some time during the day to talk.”
“I know,” Jo sighed. “I hate it, too. Of course I wish you were here, but I am so proud of you.  You’re living the dream right now, Alex. If that means I have to miss you for a little while, so be it.”
God, he really loved this woman. Alex smiled and clutched the phone tightly, “I love you. So much.”
“I love you too,” Jo answered. It still made her heart beat quickly whenever she heard him say those words. He’d been the first person to ever say them to her and mean it. “Go kick some ass.”
“I will,” Alex chuckled. “Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
Alex hung up his phone and sighed as he walked back into the bar across the street from the hospital. He walked back up to the group of his fellow interns and ordered a beer, staring at his phone for a moment before finally putting it back in his pocket.
“What’s up with you?” Yang asked. “You look all, mopey.”
“It’s nothing,” Alex shook his head.
“No, she’s right. You look depressed,” Grey seconded.
“I’m fine,” Alex took a swig of his beer. “I’m just a little homesick.”
“You know what will cheer you up? Getting laid. You see that girl over there,” Yang pointed to a woman across the bar with red hair and blue eyes. “She’s been eyeing you for a while now. I’m sure if you asked she’d say yes.”
“I don’t need to get laid,” Alex narrowed his eyes at her. “I’m fine.”
“No, you’re uptight. Isn’t he Stevens?” Yang asked the woman he’d identified as Dr. Model.
“He is,” Stevens nodded, laying her hand on Alex’s shoulder. “I know we’ve only known each other for like a week, but this is the most disappointed and depressed that I’ve seen you. And that’s saying a lot, considering that we are surgical interns and basically slaves to the hospital.”
"I'm not depressed and I do not need to get laid," Alex grumbled, taking a swig of his beer. "If you must know, I was on the phone with my girlfriend."
"Evil Spawn has a girlfriend?" Cristina raised an eyebrow. "I didn't take you for a relationship type guy."
"Neither did I, but then I met her. So, just stop pestering and let me mope in peace."
"Wow. Karev has a heart," O'Malley chuckled and took a sip of his drink. "I didn't see that one coming."
“Oh screw you guys, why don’t you go get laid? Being so invested in someone else’s love life has gotta be a sign that you need to get some.”
                                                          ———
                                                   (August 2003)
“Hey! You’re Jo right?”
Jo turned around to see a young woman with short brown hair and brown eyes smiling at her. Jo outstretched her hand, “Yes. I’m Jo. You’re Lexie, my lab partner right?”
“Yup!  It’s so nice to officially meet you,” Lexie shook Jo’s hand.
She seemed like a sweet and perky person. The exact kind of person that Jo didn’t normally associate with. For the longest time, Jo didn’t have any friends or get attached to anyone. She had two friends the entirety of her undergrad and typically didn’t look to make any more. Jo supposed it would be nice to have someone, "It's nice to meet you, too."
                                              (September 2003)
"I can't believe you actually did that!" Jo exclaimed as she and Lexie walked down to the lab. "You became another one of Karev's conquests."
"Honestly, I don't even regret it," Lexie confessed, a large smile on her face. "There is a reason why Leah is so hung up on him. He knows what he's doing. You should go for it. Sleeping with him is like a right of passage or something."
"Ew, no way," Jo faked a gag. "He's an ass. I have much higher standards than Alex Karev."
They entered the lab to find the program's resident man-whore going over some samples. Jo had to admit, he was pretty hot. Alex Karev was cocky and charming and incredibly intelligent. He was always getting the highest grades and was every professor's favorite student. She was into him. But she'd never say it out loud.
"Hey, Lexie," Alex smirked as they walked over to their stations. He gave Jo a once over and looked at her with one of his signature crooked grins. "Hello Lexie's friend. You got a name?"
Jo considered staying quiet but finally decided to respond, "Jo Wilson."
"Nice, I like chicks with boys' names."
"Karev, " Lexie warned.
"What? I do. It's hot," Alex shrugged.
"Alex, stop sleeping with all the first years. It ruins them," Lexie admonished.
"I slept with you," Alex pointed out.
"Yeah, and it's never going to happen again. Besides, Jo's my best friend," Lexie shrugged. "I'm protective of her."
                                                (October 2003)
“I told you I didn’t need you to follow me,” Jo grumbled. “I can take care of myself.”
"Calm down,  princess. There's no need to get your panties in a twist," Alex rolled his eyes at Jo who'd been yelling at him for the past few minutes. They'd been studying with a group of friends in the library when Jo decided to leave and Alex offered to walk her home. “I just don’t think you should be walking home alone with that fancy watch on your wrist that daddy probably gifted you. Can’t risk someone mugging the princess.”
"Stop calling me princess!" Jo shouted, turning to face Alex as anger bubbled up inside of her. She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself for a moment. "My mother left me at a fire station when I was two weeks old. I got bumped around foster homes until I was sixteen when I took matters into my own hands and started living out of a car. I parked it behind the gym of my high school so I could sneak in and use the showers before class. My home ec teacher--Ms. Schmidt--she’d let me do my laundry there for free. And yeah, I got into good schools because I worked my ass off. And when I walked across that stage at graduation, I didn’t have a cheering section filled with my richy-rich family. I had one person, Ms. Schmidt. That’s it. She’s the one who gave me this watch when I got into Med School. Her son works for the company.”
Alex had the decency to look down at the ground ashamed. He walked up to the wall Jo was leaning against and stood beside her, “It is a nice watch.”
“Thanks.”
The next time they see each other, things are different. Understanding Jo’s background gave Alex a deeper appreciation for her work ethic. Even though they were in different years, Alex found himself seeking Jo out for projects and studying. Being around her made him want to be better. He wanted to excel in ways he hadn’t in the past. And that said a lot, considering he was already at the top of his class.
So that’s why when he saw her sitting at the bar a couple weeks later, he decided to join her. They’d had an argument earlier in the day where some things were said. Alex walked up to the bar and grinned at the bartender, “A beer for me and another round for Hobo Jo. Let me guess… Thunderbird or is it straight paint thinner?” Alex looked back up at the bartender. “You got a little brown paper bag you can put that in?”
“Would you stop,” Jo sighed and looked at Alex. “I had no parents. I lived in my car. Yes I have trust issues, it comes with the territory.”
“You need to stop acting like you’re the only person who ever had a crappy childhood,” Alex rolled his eyes slightly.
“Oh yeah? How many foster homes did you get kicked out of before you moved into your car?”
“Seventeen. And I didn’t live in my car. I went to juvie,” Alex took a sip of his drink.
“Stop making fun of me,” Jo shook her head.
“I’m not.”
Jo’s face scrunched in interest, “Really?”
“And you’re actually lucky that your folks abandoned you. It means you didn’t have to watch your schizo mom go after your baby brother with a steak knife.”
“Fine, fair,” Jo conceded. “But you never woke up in the middle of the night with junkies banging on your bedroom windshield, praying they’d get tired or bored before they put a rock through a window.”
“No, I didn’t,” Alex shook his head in response. “Because the junkie was my dad and he didn’t break windows, just fingers.”
“Well, did you ever have foster parents that made you and nineteen other kids sleep on cots in the basement? Locking the doors, lights out, so that if you had to pee in the middle of the night, you had to use buckets they set up along the wall. Buckets you couldn’t see because if you turned the lights on, the bigger kids would hold you down and take those buckets and--” Jo’s voice cracked slightly.
Alex bowed his head in sadness, “God… no, never.”
“Me neither,” Jo shrugged. “Saw it in a movie on cable.”
Alex’s mouth twitched into a shocked grin as he let out a few chuckles, “How did you get cable in your car?”
“I don’t live in my car anymore, jerk,” Jo giggled lightly.
Her story must’ve done the trick to break the ice because before they knew it, Jo and Alex were well on their way to becoming best of friends. They laughed and joked together for hours, even going as far as fake crying to get out of paying their tab.
“You know, you’re not half bad, Karev,” Jo grinned as she and Alex walked out of the bar. She clutched the sides of Alex’s jacket which he had so kindly allowed her to borrow. “I actually had a lot of fun tonight.”
“So did I, Wilson,” Alex smiled back at her. “What do you say we grab some tacos and eat them in the back of my truck?”
“Sounds great to me.”
