The importance of setting rules for your fictional universe
I talked about this a little in another recent post in terms of rules for character design (not any like…theory or rules for designing characters, but rather rules for WHY a character looks a certain way) and it made me think more about world building in general.
I’ll be talking mainly about Hellaverse stuff since it’s on my mind, at first because I rewatched HB and now again b/c the HH trailer dropped.
B/c I gotta be honest, I’m pretty sure the world of Hazbin Hotel is gonna fall flat for me the same way that Helluva Boss has.
And as a reminder, I’m not trying to bash Helluva and Hazbin. I enjoyed the recent Hazbin trailer, but I think it’s really important to examine and think about story stuff.
Critique/Review below!
I think one of, if not THE biggest thing keeping HB and HH from feeling like a fully realized world is that we don’t really have any rules or standards for what is considered “normal” in Hell.
And since there’s no baseline for what is considered moral and immoral in hell, characters and their reactions to violence, crime, verbal abuse, body shaming, etc. seem to switch rapidly between sharing an earthly human morality, where everything is mirroring our current day society, and an anything goes kill-steal-maim total anarchy ideology.
To me the HH/HB version of hell comes off like the purge, except actually there ARE some crimes that are off limits. Like murder is okay sometimes and of course there are assassins everywhere that’s just a normal freelance sort of business. But also there’s organized crime and if you steal from a bank you go to hell-jail.
For example, after “Exes and Oh’s”, I had assumed killing other Imps or hellborn must be considered a crime, the way that Crim’s behavior and killing of his underlings was portrayed as completely negative and horrific. But then remembered that Millie having a neighborhood body count due to getting too competitive is mentioned as a joke, and it’s pretty clear that her family thinks of it as more of an embarrassing incident than like…an actually terrible thing to do.
I thought, “Okay, we’ll, maybe it’s just Moxxie’s Mom that was against all the violence being taught to her son.” But apparently she’s from the Wrath ring, the same ring as Millie. So was Moxxie’s Nameless Mom seen as being particularly different or strange to the what a “typical” Wrath Imp is? We can’t know.
Like. We see that imps have romantic relationships and can care deeply about each other and fall in love, just like humans do. In reference to the neighborhood bodycount thing, were Millie’s neighbors not extremely upset with her? Wouldn’t they also grieve their loved ones? Is it sometimes socially acceptable to kill other Imps like in sporting events???
Are the rules for what is seen as socially acceptable for sinners different from what’s socially acceptable for hellborn? Are there different ideas of what is socially acceptable from ring to ring?
I worry that when I ask these questions about a fictional universe, people will think I’m TRYING to dig or look for things to tear that world apart.
I promise I’m thinking about these things so deeply out of curiosity and because I want to engage with the material.
I want to understand and have fun in the fictional universe the writers have invited us all to. But if the rules of your universe are not clear, it can make it much harder for audiences to navigate the story you are trying to tell in that setting.
The HH/HB universe just does NOT have that clarity right now. Since season 2 of HB I’ve noticed that the world building has become more and more inconsistent, and if it’s supposed to now SHARE that world with HH, I really don’t know how they’re going to make their world coherent.
As a final note these are just my opinions. They are not objectively right. If you love Hh and HB and firmly believe the story is clear and the world building makes sense that’s great!! Genuinely, I am happy that the story means a lot to you and you enjoy it. These are just my personal critiques and views.

YOOOO! HazbinHotel Trailer just Drop!😱 Spoilers Along with the Release date of Season 1 and 2! Let Us know your Opinion about it!😆
Some things we know:
Amazon Prime is the streaming service that took it up Season 1 will be released in January 2024
It's going to get a season 2
The voice actors still haven't been announced for some reason? The trailer has no dialogue on top of that. We see Lucifer, a lot of Alastor and Vox fighting, the weird demon-looking angel Adam, a meeting of Hell overlords discussing the angel threats, and Sir Pentious is part of the gang now. That's about it? The trailer's music reminds me of a Disney movie for kids. There are a lot of Tinkerbell chime noises and jazzy upbeat music which I don't think is fitting for what the show is trying to go for as a teen-to-adult plot regarding demons from Hell being murdered and dealing with abuse. (They have "Guess what, bitches?" on a text screen in the trailer too) So first impression is extreme overcrowding. List of characters that appear in the trailer alone: Charlie Alastor Vaggie Angel Dust Husker Niffty Sir Pentious Lucifer Lilith Vox Velvet Adam Rosie and we all know Cherri Bomb and Valentino are gonna show up too. These are way too many characters to introduce or juggle in an 8 episode season. There is no possible way to give our main characters enough screen time, focus, or development to make them meaningful protagonists. They either have to rush plots or drop character arcs to squeeze things into 8 episodes.

…i just saw this poll and my unevolved brain gel wriggled inside my cranium like a feral fish:
Tumblr media
idk how you look at his official art and call him conventionally attractive. my man looks like a wet dog and has eyebags for daysss. face full of pox scars, skin pale af, and those shaggy ass hair & a rugged beard hanging from his flat long face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he is pretty *to me* but like dude???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
—not exactly a heartthrob boy band material is he?
obv I wouldn’t call him “misunderstood baby uwu” if we are talking a little more seriously —but to be fair jean is having possibly the worst week of his life. the car? fucking sunk. case? unsolved. not to mention his close partner (who is also an ass mind you) doesn’t even remember him, already running around with a new one.
yeah he is absolutely foul and aggressive and degrading harry but like i said before (in my tag essay lol) judit also makes ableist comments and i don’t see people hating her because she’s outwardly nice—
Tumblr media
and respects harry as her superior. her BOSS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(also a friend with benefits? /nope, it’s just him harassing judit/ as well but not as a complicated relationship compared jean and harry’s brötherbund. only a few months of acquaintanceship.)
plus it’s highhlyyy likely that harry is not the only one substance abuse. —look at jean’s rudolf-looking-red-ass-nose. a drunkard’s sniffers. probably had few lines with him late at night… when your lifetime partner is an alcoholic it's hard to say no.
about the left for dead thing, they left because harry told them to fuck off. tbh harry is nightmare to work with esp pre-bender. (and am saying as a pathetic little unmedicated neurodivergent woman.)
Tumblr media
but when the second time they left revachol was not jean’s fault, and it was judit’s suggestion anyway. the squad probably thought that since harry had someone a little more responsible looking after him. it will be fine when they come back. the tribunal was absolutely unaccounted for.
Tumblr media
yet despite all of these things, he will try to come back to make sure he is ok and accommodate harrier to the best of his abilities which is wearing very thin. look at him trying to make up to our harry boy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyways am incapable of writing coherent thoughts (even though i want to talk about it for hours) that make sense so go look at sygneth’s jean psychological analysis instead. it is an excellent read. please go read.

What's the point of making Ozzie a demon if he's not going to be evil, dangerous and deadly like demons are supposed to be? Vivziepop sucks at making demon characters.not only do her characters look nothing like demons and now they don't act like ones??? Hazbin Hotel is doomed, might as well make Hazbin a preschool show at this point.its also embarrassing that the king of hell (Lucifer) is just Stolas 2.0 from reading the leaked scripts.Id like to add more but im far too tired because this is getting absurdly painful.
I think there is valid criticism in this critique, but I also feel that, in a way, it is rather exaggerated outrage.
When it comes to demons behaving any specific way, that mainly comes down to poor world building. Spindlehorse has done very little to actually dictate how this world of hers works, and many times, it appears she actively contradicts values previously assumed.
Are there vastly different laws and social expectations between rings?
Loo Loo Land, and once again in Oops, Greed is shown to have an extremely lax approach to crimes of violence.
However, in Harvest Moon, having previously killed people results in Millie being banned from participating in the episode.
Stolas being in public with Blitz gets no notice or response of attention in Harvest Moon and again later in Ozzie's. But then the internal logic contradicts that same episode with Walley acting like it is actually a huge deal. And then for a third time the series presents an about face with Beelzebub dating Tex as if there is nothing special going on there.
Stolas cheats, but he is not wrong for that, which makes it not a flaw.
Then, the world building tries to reinforce the idea that this relationship would be a problem by trying to highlight a demon racial and status divide in Western Energy. Only for Queen Bee and Oops to backtrack again and make it extremely normalized with Beelzebub dating a common Hell Hound and Asmodeus' conflict not being about who he is dating, but the act of dating in the first place.
Going into the idea of "good" and "evil," I don't really think that is a good argument to make. There has to be some sense of conflict for a story to maintain interest, and if the idea of "evil" is the norm was played to a logical conclusion, it would feel more like a joke than anything else. Like in Good Omens, where Hell is dictated by doing the worst thing possible and anything that produces a moral positive is bad. It would completely isolate the audience from the values of the cast, which is why Crowley is depicted as having a personality and values more aligned to humans. As such, it doesn't feel like a good faith platform to stand on when criticizing the show.
What I will say is fair, however, is that Medrano has achieved an Olympic medal in trying to make her characters entirely flawless. There is no consistent character flaw that any of her cast maintains out of what is deemed necessary by the plot or depicted as not a flaw by context.
Asmodeus is quite literally perfect for Vivienne's standards. His whole life revolves around his partner, and he is willing to do whatever it takes for that partner, including murder. But that is good, actually.
Blitz is inconsistently too insecure in his relationships. He's insecure when it comes to FizzaRolli and Stolas, resulting in him burning down his own family home and violently rejecting Stolas after the night at Ozzie's. But he's so secure in other relationships that: (1) despite knowing Barbie doesn't want to see him, he tracks her down, (2) he is overbearing of Loona despite feeling like she hates him, (3) abuses Moxxie, despite having issues with losing people.
And I think that's what this criticism is actually addressing. A lack of understanding the stakes and values the world plays on while simultaneously being handed characters who are so volatile in their own values every time we see them that it is pretty much impossible to defer those values passively.

Is Hell really overpopulated or is that only a Pride Ring problem?
I keep hearing that Hell is overpopulated but where?? Helluva Boss never mentions that Hell is overpopulated, we don’t see any homeless tents or imps living of the street, implying that the overpopulation problem has caused a big homeless crisis in Hell.
The only part of Hell that’s seems overpopulated is the Pride Ring. We see the Exterminators come from Heaven to kill in the ring but that brings up another set of unanswered questions.
Do the Exterminators only kill in the Pride Ring? I mean we only saw the Pride Ring in shambles in the pilot, no other rings were shown or mentioned.
Do the Exterminators also targets imps? In Charlie’s speech, she said her people, so that would implied imps too except she’s only talking to the sinners about her plan and we don’t see any imps being concerned about Extermination Day.
Tumblr media
There’s literally an imp here and he seems very casual about the extermination that just happened. What are the imps place in the extermination? Wouldn’t the imps be mad at Charlie for prioritizing helping the sinners first than her own Hell native citizens, if the extermination affects them too? How do imps feel about the exterminations?
Why is the Pride Ring the only ring to have sinners? This is just a stupid choice for Hell. Not only does this caused overpopulation in the Pride Ring that can easily be fix but it also ruins the purposes of having the other rings too. The purpose of the rings was to organize sinners to their corresponding sins to each rings and punishing them accordingly to it. If the sinners were spread across Hell evenly, it could slow down the overpopulation for awhile.
If anything having all the rings being overpopulated with sinners is a better threat to have than just one ring only being overpopulated. It's now a problem that affects all of Hell and can't be easily fixed if it was only one ring with an overpopulation problem. This would make Charlie stressed and we would have to see her get creative to how she can solve the problem and pleased everyone at the same time. It would also give a clear sense of agency too since now all of the Hell is at threat of the Exterminators, heaven, overpopulation, tensions between the different species and wealth classes in Hell raising, and a sense of doom that a species can go extinct at any moment because there isn't enough room and food to keep them living.
Also before people mentioned that it’s only a pilot, pilots are supposed to establish and answer basic questions about it's own world building. It's what gets the audience hook into a universe different from Earth. Beside these are all basic questions that Viv should have had answered about her own Hell by the time she was done writing for pilot or even during.

Fizzarolli 5e Build
Tumblr media
Previous Hazbin/Helluva Builds: Stolas Striker
Lineage - Tiefling (Devil's Tongue) Fizz is an imp, making the choice of tiefling a no-brainer here. In addition to the standard tiefling, you could use the Glasya or Mammon (heh.) Variants as well as the Devil's Tongue Variant Tiefling. Alternatively you could use a Warforged if you want to play Robo-Fizz instead.
Background - Entertainer So we know Fizzy grew up as a Circus performer and dreamed of making it big under Mammon's tutelage. So Entertainer is a also an easy pick here. For his instrument proficiency I grabbed Horn (Trumpet!) He gets a disguise kit from his class (see below) so I picked up Tinker Tools so he can fix his robotic parts (or himself in the case of Robo-Fizz)
Class - (Mastermind Rogue) So we have a few options for Fizzy. Bard or Rogue are the obvious choices in my mind though Warlock could also work. Particularly, I'm looking at College of Glamour, College of Whispers, Mastermind Rogue or Fiend Warlock. So we see Fizz do lots of death defying stunts, but nothing explicitly magical. His Deal with Mammon makes Warlock enticing, but nothing about the deal as we see it in the show screams "Warlock" to me. Fizz also seems unsuited towards fighting so puts us in a pickle. Rogue is very combat oriented and Bard is not, but Rogue has a lack of spells that fits Fizz better. Your choice here is as good as mine. 4. Skills Fizz will get Acrobatics and Performance from Entertainer so he's free to pick up Persuasion, Slight of Hand, Stealth and Perception from Rogue. For Expertise, I'd recommend putting them in Acrobatics and Performance. He gets additional languages from Mastermind as well as a gaming set. I grabbed Playing Card Set but it doesn't really matter. If you can get your DM to let you to know Drow Sign Language in place of Undercommon, stellar. Otherwise pick up two languages that seem pertinent to your game. 5. Stats Regardless if you're building Rogue or Bard, High Dexterity and High Charisma make sense for Fizz. His Strength is a great dump stat, so spread his remaining points out among his Con, Int, and Wis. Spread below: Str - 9 Dex - 16 Con - 12 Int - 12 Wis - 10 Cha - 16 6. Feats (Optional) So you have a lot of good feat options for Fizz, especially if you want to use magic to represent special effects he does in his performances. Mobile is an excellent feat for rogues and would represent the way Fizz flies and tumbles around the stage. Tough or Infernal Constitution could be great to represent how much punishment Fizz has lived through. Magic Initiate (Bard) or (Warlock) would be excellent for Fizz. Alternatively, you could grab Fey Touched for a similar effect. Actor could be fun for Flavor. Vicious Mockery, Eldritch Blast, Minor Illusion, Prestidigitation, Tasha's Hideous Laughter, and Faerie Fire all feel appropriate choices for Magic Initiate.

Just watched Hezu’s video and the fact the writers just straight up forgot Moxxie was born in wrath 🤦🏾
Like it just makes things more confusing. Also, why didn’t the episode show that Moxxie was born in Wrath but was raised in agreed most of his childhood instead of the crew explaining that in tweets, like we should be shown this kind of stuff in the actual show because not everyone uses Twitter or sees the tweets.

All I’m gonna say
-blitz had a choice between making money and not fucking with his sister. He chose the money, not even trying to say to her that they need money or seeming conflicted about his choice in anyway. Choices reveal character, and even thou they didn’t technically kill the guy, that’s still what he was gonna do and what he was trying to do. Him turning around a second later and saying let me help you lets have dinner makes him look so stupid like dude you choose money and finishing the job over not messing up your sisters current thing. You can’t have it both ways dude. If they try to throw a blitz pity party about this just no. But it didn’t even seem like he cared about what happened with him and Barbie in the last scene of the ep he just wanted to make fun of moxie in his normal way seeming unaffected by what just happened
-not just this episode, but overall the editing in this show is not good, both within a scene and scene to scene edits. When they bust in the door then it cuts to Millie making a face for five seconds and then back in the cabin like what. I get your trying to set up Millies performance and the song but it could have been conveyed and edited so much better
-I liked barbs design, but I wish I knew anything about her character. Like all I know is she’s trying to get a job/has a job and that something happened with her and blitz and that she’ll manipulate teenagers(bro why didn’t you just make him older(I know viv said he’s like 18/19) or why didn’t she just say humans are easy to manipulate.
-moxxies like we have a job to do bro you got sidetracked too and didn’t want to look into the guy who obviously did it.
-the captions during the banjo solo were actually pretty funny and clever. I also like they guy getting turned into a skeleton bit during the end concert.” first aid is for winners” was funny too
-I liked the design of the news anchor and the client guy
TLDR-I don’t feel bad for blitz this episode, he made his choice and then acted like he didn’t. The editing in this whole show makes me mad. I wish this episode let us know more about who barb is. Moxxie was acting like an asshole which felt off. Some good designs and some funny jokes.

Ok, I love this show, but if I could get rid of one episode and rewrite another while leaving the majority of everything else untouched. I'd chose---
Seeing Stars and Unhappy Campers. I'd rewrite Seeing Stars and delete Unhappy Campers.
Why?
Seeing Stars should've been a purely Octavia and Loona focused episode. The scene with Loona and Octavia would have hit harder that way.
Unhappy Campers, is bad, I love Millie focus, I like learning about Barbie but its executed badly, and while it is a Millie focused episode, the development and pov is mainly Moxxie's. Moreover, its more about them as couple than solely about Millie. If we wanted to addressed their issues as a couple, we could have done that in Exes and Ohs. Moreover the Barbie stuff we could swap out the Hellbies shot stuff for the Barbie stuff. A more serious parallel to Oops where someone he loves gets hurt, but he chooses family but still loses them anyway.
Also Millie development can be outside Moxxie and Blitz, this episode told us Millie thinks she plain and boring and after seeing Fionna and Cake, she's not too different from Betty in the sense that she does keep sacrificing to keep her boo happy cause he's too in his stuff. You could say Seeing Stars shows that. But we could have had this hinted at before on Millie's side. Have Blitz ask at least once, what she sees in him. When he's so goddamn whiny and single minded. But yeah anyway.
How would I rewrite Seeing Stars?
I would keep it the same up until Octavia broke into the office, and I would have Loona tag along with Octavia.
They would just focus on Octavia's journey, bumbling around L.A., refusing to address why they're there. (Oh hey look Like Fathers, Like Daughters. They are all bad at communicating.)
Blitz freaks about Loona, but then realizes Stolas would be mad, we'd still have that scene be mostly the same aside from Blitz freaking out too. We learn about how Stolas found Blitz in Truth Seekers or we have the gang employ another Hell Hound, maybe even bring back Tex again. Maybe Stolas has an idea of the books last use. But aside from that can't track it because it's in the hands of a rightful user. As well as the limitations of the human world.
They go to the human world, we can keep the Moxxie and Millie hijinks and other things up until the van. In the Van, Blitz and Stolas are freaking out about their girls, and Stolas wonders again why Octavia did this and wondering why Loona went with her. Blitz then ashamedly admits why Loona left and that he's a bad dad, and Stolas assures him he's not. They have a moment, Stolas tries to reach out and hold Blitz's hand to comfort him, just like he did at Ozzie's, but Blitz shuts it down immediately. Stolas is unhappy, looks down at his phone. He tries to bring up Ozzie's, "Blitz I know its not the best time but I just want to say I'm---" he gets cut off and they are whisked into the building.
Meanwhile, Octavia and Loona are still wandering L.A., Loona wants to go to a coffee shop, and Octavia tells her to do whatever she wants, but as Loona responds she spots a pet shop, or a dog pound. Cue trauma as she recalls the day Blitz adopted her. We focus on the hound trying to hurt her, her fear, her huddling into the bed, and distantly we can hear Blitz and the lady talking, same dialogue, "Oh that's Loona, she'll never amount to nothing" until Blitz says "I want to adopt her." "What?" "I want to adopt her." He says, looking right at her while holding the bars, his smile is soft and kind. Loona growls at him, but he doesn't stop smiling. And you see the brief bit of hope enter Loona's eyes, then we transition back to L.A. as Octavia is concerned for Loona. "Hey, hello, are you alright?" Loona gaze hardens. "I'm just fine." "You sure, because you looked like you were having a stroke."
"Can you just fucking drop it? I need some fucking coffee."
Loona leaves Octavia behind. Octavia looks hurt.
Back to the t.v. studio. We can have it the same. (the water joke can stay as well, we can just have someone pour some water on a plant or something before hand to better set up the joke, instead of just having it on a poster in the background, it can still be on a poster. In fact, have a person drink the water in front of that poster, so later when Stolas throws it at the director no one is confused about why he's burning.) Blitz still has has flashback moment, but instead we can see him signing the adoption papers, linking back to that photo on his phone in Ozzie's. Loona is done with the whole thing and Blitz is beaming. But he overhears people saying they are happy to be rid of her sooner than 18, and that she's a good for nothing. Loona is hurt. She heard too. Blitz notices. "Hey, let's go home."
Come back to "no she's mine and I love her!" chaos ensues, ends at lets go find our daughters.
Meanwhile, Honey, I'm in the house is a live taping right, so it could be broadcasting as Loona's in a coffee shop, we see Loona see Blitz calling the pug Loona and sayin "no she's mine and I love her" and the camera tips over as all hell breaks loose, Loona see's Stolas too. And then we have the moment of her throwing her coffee away and going to find Octavia. We can have the sinstagram again or, as Loona is thinking of where to find Octavia, she recalls the common theme of Octavia's wandering. The stars. She finds out where you can see stars and she goes to Griffth Observatory. We have the exchange about smog and cutting her dad slack. When Octavia asks why. Loona apologizes to Octavia and explains why she tagged along. About Blitz, and then says but at least he's trying. There more impactful, and gives Loona more of an arc in the episode.
The girls go find their dads, Stolas and Octavia hug. Loona can still kick Blitz in the nuts, saying "that's for saying you were gonna replace me with a new secretary," then she picks him up and sets him right, and goes "thanks for coming to get me." He tries to hug her, she pushes him away. "Don't push it old man." Then we have the moment with Stolas and Octavia, same as the og, cue fireworks, cute moment. Back to M&M. Everyone goes home the end.
