Amulet Carved in Intaglio (Incised)

Byzantine (Egypt), 6th–7th century CE

Inscriptions identify the subject of this amulet as the Woman with the Issue of Blood (Mark 5:25–34; Luke 8:43–48). On the reverse a woman stands in the orant (prayer) pose. Hematite was believed to stop the flow of blood and was a favorite medium for amulets related to female reproductive health and menstrual problems.

Hematite just BARELY eked out a win against watermelon tourmaline last round, and I am honestly so proud of it!!! Hematite is so unique and special. To me. I mean it’s LITERALLY got hidden depths. It looks like a plain black or grey stone but SURPRISE! Its powder is red. That’s so goth! So very Count Dracula of hematite! (Any other Dracula Daily participants out there?) It’s named for BLOOD. Also full of iron.

As for bismuth...Look, I can’t pretend any longer.

It won the @periodictabletournament, which was expected and I was not surprised, but I’m still salty. I mean hydrogen, people!

ANYWAY, bismuth is overhyped. What does it actually have other than being colorful when oxidized? Like, I love bismuth as much as the next gay. I HAD to get my own bismuth sample when I saw my local gem shop had some. I was charmed by the rainbow allure. However, bismuth has to be oxidized to look like that and other minerals also change color when oxidized!

If anything, as an IBS girl, I think we should be appreciating bismuth because of the role it plays in Pepto Bismol. Or we should like bismuth's looks because of the stairstep crystal structure (although bismuth hardly ever forms that way outside of a lab setting). So. Um. Yeah.

That being said, I really don't think hematite can stand up to bismuth, so do what you must!
