this week in class we talked about hemispatial neglect, a condition that causes people to completely neglect one of their sides, usually because of a stroke. it causes people to pay attention to only half of their world, so they only read one side of a newspaper or eat only one half of their plate.
when explaining this, the teacher showed a few pictures and tests that are used to diagnose this (which, apparently, is quite easy because these patients will always be missing half), and guess what picture showed up?

i had to silence myself not to immediately bring up hannibal but oh my did i WANT to

This blog serves as a mirror for my AO3 as I do not agree with their archival practices. As of December 1st, I no longer use AO3. New uploads and mirrors can be found on SqWA which is linked below.
I block people who write incest, pedo, bestiality, etc. I do not want to interact with self-ascribed "proshippers".
CW: I write about suicide frequently, as well as death and mortality in general. My work is mostly SFW with some dark elements. I write about disability sometimes and dissociation (I am multiple). Please let me know if any of my work depicting physical disability is harmful in any way.
All my posts are fine to reblog.

🐶 🙃 🧡 🌙
thank you!!
🐶 Are you more of a dog person or a cat person?
Oh, definitely a cat person!! I love most animals, but I have a special obsession with kitties.
🙃 What’s a weird fact that you know?
*Mind immediately goes blank*
There's an interesting condition called hemispatial neglect which is when damage to a brain hemisphere (often in the parietal lobe) causes the individual to basically "ignore" one half of their world, often unknowingly, which leads to drawings such as this:

Valentine’s Day 2022 (shoot me right through the heart  :(´ཀ`」 ∠):.)
*spoilers for Nehan’s vday card* I’ve been suspecting before, but the fact that Nehan’s handwriting was squeezed into the lower right corner pretty much confirms it - he has hemispatial neglect - a commonly seen impairment after damage to the brain from stroke or head trauma. Basically his eyes can see things normally in his left visual field, but his brain cannot process it. Please take good care of your meowmeow and help him cross the street on your way to lizard farming and GW. (also doctor - DADDY - I NEED YOU - I DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE WASTING MONEY YOU SPEAK OF I WILL SPEND ALL MY MONEY ON YOU -

What are some mind blowing or just fun facts from neuroscience & neuropsychology you could tell us? ⭐️☺️😊
The brain itself is mind-blowing and every small detail you learn about it. How it actually perceives and how you turn into a different world with it. In Neuroscience most fascinating fact would be the brain waves, oscillations, and how you see everything on the monitor. How you make data, analyze them, find something new that becomes scientifically proved. This is such a big world. Neuroscience can be associated with everything, it even takes a lot of part with Machine Learning and AI studies.
Neuropsychology is basically the same, but with a more psychological view. Communication with patients, seeing their MRI or EEG. One of the most fascinating "disorders" for me so far was Hemispatial Neglect. Neuropsychology is not my field this far, but I think I would not say no to taking another MSc in this field :) The more you know, the more involved and immersed you are becoming with the brain and its functions. It's huge and you always have the opportunity to discover something new. It is really hard and you always feel like giving up, but at the end of the day this field is worth for struggling. Always feels like, you are part of something so big and so special. magnificent feeling. ⭐️

I don't think this is spoken about much but, could we stop treating rare disabilities like a spectacle please? There's a fine line between finding something interesting, and treating it like a fun fact that no real person actually experiences. I see that line getting crossed a lot.
No, it's not a "crazy condition that's too weird to be real!" It's a disability that some people have to live with every day of their lives. Please treat those people with some respect, especially if you're presenting information about it or using it in a work of fiction. Do your research, ask people who actually live with that condition about it if possible, and most of all, think about the real human beings who have that condition and what it's actually like to have it.

Sci-Show Psych: Hemispatial Neglect: When Half Your World Disappears
Losing half of the world sounds like a weird, abstract dream state. But for those that develop hemispatial neglect, that’s exactly what happens, without them even realizing it.

Day 2
When a patient is brain damaged, sometimes it results in hemispatial neglect - this is when the patient loses awareness of half of their body. They may apply makeup to, or shave only one side of their face. They will forget that one side of their body is something that exists, and will often run into the edges of doors, hitting their forgotten side.
This seems strange to the average person. After all, how do you just forget to take your body, something you’ve lived with your entire life, into account? Patients have compared this feeling to the back of your head - it’s part of you, it’s always with you, but unless you’re actually thinking about it, you forget that it’s there. It just fades away into something unimportant compared to the rest of the stimuli of a busy world.
Now that you’re all good and aware of the back of your heads: the back of my head is very itchy and has been since I woke up this morning. That is all.
